00:00First check of the forecast. Dylan, good morning. Good morning, guys. We do have some wet weather and going into
00:05the weekend, that's going to move into the East Coast. But for right now, across western Kentucky, western Tennessee, lots
00:10of cloud to ground lightning, lots of torrential downpours. In fact, back through Missouri, too, we do have this flood
00:16watch in effect in these little areas of red here where we have those flash flood warnings. The rain is
00:22just really, really heavy. It's not the ground doesn't have enough time to absorb it. So it leads to some
00:27of that flash flooding.
00:28It's this frontal system that's slowly creeping to the East. So as we go into tonight, we will start to
00:33see those showers move across central Kentucky up into Ohio. And then going into the start of the weekend, unfortunately,
00:39not really a beach day on Saturday from the Mid-Atlantic stretching down into Virginia and North Carolina. But we
00:45will start to see some improvements as we go into Sunday. So Saturday is not really the beach day, but
00:49Sunday is. Today, though, we certainly are going to see that heavy rain take hold all day long in this
00:54area of the country back through the Midwest where we could end up with about three to five inches of
00:58rain.
00:58That's a look at the weather across the country. We'll get to your local forecast in the next 30 seconds.
01:03The Swift Kelsey's have rain on their wedding day. I never thought I'd be making that kind of forecast, but
01:09it could be OK. I don't know. None of us are invited, so I don't see why we even care.
01:16We've got some extreme heat down across Texas. This heat dome, this area of high pressure, this sinking air just
01:22keeps this heat locked in place.
01:24We also have moisture streaming in from the Gulf, so that just adds to the humidity.
01:28Wichita Falls will feel like 105 today. Little Rock will feel like 98. Atlanta will feel like 93.
01:34And then tomorrow, we're going to continue to see the heat spread up into Nashville.
01:38Highs in the 90s, heat indices into the triple digits.
01:41Roanoke will feel like 91 tomorrow. Columbia will feel like 104.
01:44And we are going to tap into some of that heat as we go into next week for the mid
01:49-Atlantic area, where we'll get up into the upper 80s and lower 90s.
01:52But back through the Midwest and the plains, we're going to stay in the 90s and the triple digits going
01:57forward with that humidity sticking around as well.
01:59So just dangerous heat during that middle of the day.
02:02So you want to stay inside, stay hydrated, stay in the A.C. when you can.
02:05We also have the flooding potential today back through the Midwest.
02:08This is going to be a concern all day long.
02:09Some isolated severe storms could pop up across the northern Rockies.
02:13That's a look at the weather across the country.
02:14Now here's a peek out your window.
02:16Happens when the water just can't drain.
02:18It just piles up.
02:19And that's what leads to the flooding and the flash flooding that happens just so quickly when you have these
02:24heavier downpours.
02:25Through central Missouri right now, through western Kentucky, western Tennessee, that's where the heaviest of the rain is falling.
02:30And that's going to be the trend through the next several hours.
02:33So we do have flash flood watches, meaning conditions are favorable for flooding to happen.
02:37And then your flash flood warnings means flooding is happening at that exact moment.
02:42Now what's going on today is we'll have these rounds of thunderstorms that produce torrential downpours in a short period
02:48of time.
02:49And this area in light blue here includes all the areas that we do have under that flood watch.
02:54Because if you get those thunderstorms, you do have the potential for some flash flooding.
02:58We also have the risk of some stronger storms developing up into Montana and down into Rapid City.
03:03And then here's that other area from Springfield, including Evansville, too, just north of Nashville, where we'll not only see
03:09those torrential downpours,
03:10but also the risk of inch or more diameter-sized hail and wind gusts up to about 60 miles per
03:15hour.
03:15Now we also have some dry thunderstorms happening out west, meaning you're getting the lightning without the rain.
03:21It's very, very dry because of the long-term drought conditions.
03:25And we're also looking for some gusty winds.
03:26So in this part of the country, out in Utah and stretching down into Grand Canyon and into Las Vegas,
03:34where we do have the very life-threatening fire conditions because of those dry conditions that could lead to fires
03:40spreading very rapidly.
03:42Garrett.
03:42All right, Dylan, thank you.
03:45And that's your latest forecast.
03:46Best time of the morning.
03:47You know, when you say the weather's fire, it's fire.
03:49I've got to fix my vocab.
03:50Yeah, you've got to be careful with that because the teens watching right now think it's awesome weather,
03:54but it's fire weather.
03:55Literal fire weather.
03:56All right, the way he's awesome.
03:57He was on Jimmy Fallon last night.
03:58I don't know if you saw that.
03:59That was me.
04:00That's a pretty good humble brag.
04:01That's going to flex.
04:02That MSG is pretty good.
04:04Which is Riley Green and Queen Latifah.
04:06Oh.
04:06That was a lot of fun, along with Adam Levine is back.
04:09Is there any hazing that goes out?
04:11Or AI Blake Shelton.
04:13But Riley's awesome.
04:14He's a great new addition, and his career's, you know, blown up right now.
04:17It does remind us of what to check out that conversation
04:19because they're always great.
04:20When you wake up on Sunday today with Willie Geis,
04:23and of course season 30, I'll promote now,
04:25of The Voice kicks off this September here on NBC.
04:28Isn't that crazy?
04:28We need you.
04:29Speaking of The Voice, we've got Melanie Martinez.
04:31It's a good pivot.
04:32It's been nearly one year since devastating floods in the Texas Hill Country
04:36took the lives of 28 people at Camp Mystic.
04:39This morning, our friend and anchor Lester Holt is here to give us a preview
04:43of an all-new Dateline special that looks into what happened
04:46in the early hours of that July 4th weekend.
04:48Yeah, in an exclusive interview, Lester sat down with eight mothers
04:51who lost their daughters last summer about their grief
04:54and ongoing search for answers.
04:57Good morning.
04:57I find myself watching that as a mother, pain so real,
05:01even after a year of this.
05:03What struck you the most talking to them?
05:05You know, it's always...
05:06He has run Camp Mystic for decades,
05:08and before your reporting went to Camp Mystic,
05:10what was it like to be there?
05:13It's kind of hard.
05:14Anniversary, obviously, such a tough milestone for these families.
05:16How are they finding a way forward?
05:19You know, looking forward to seeing it in full, Lester, and appreciate...
05:23We're going to switch gears a bit and coming up in today's checklist,
05:25simple ways to keep your skin healthy and hydrated this summer.
05:29Then, like, we're just five days into summer,
05:30and while the warm weather is here to stay,
05:32so are some common skin concerns.
05:34We're talking sunburns, heat rashes.
05:36We're going to tell you what we need to do
05:38to know how to keep our skin healthy this season.
05:40Here to help us is...
05:41Good morning. Great to have you with us.
05:42So, this one, this first one, I'm going to ask you...
05:44...naturally get tanned.
05:46I understand.
05:47Laura loves the pool.
05:48Let's look at these points.
05:49Let's look at these points.
05:50All right, so what's happening,
05:52the reason why you're still getting tanned
05:53is people are often not using enough sunscreen.
05:55For your face, it's two-finger widths.
05:57For your entire body, it's a shot glass,
05:59and they often are not reapplying as much as they should,
06:02especially if they're outside.
06:03You're with your kids, vacation.
06:05You're not reapplying.
06:06You forget you're having fun.
06:07And then don't forget those areas that are so vulnerable,
06:10so neck, ears, tops of feet.
06:13Also, for men in particular, scalp.
06:15And make sure you have a buddy, a friend.
06:17Yeah, even one of your kids can apply for you.
06:19Although then it's all streaky.
06:21Family affair.
06:22What if you do get a sunburner, kids get a sunburner?
06:25I mean, how do we come back from that?
06:27So, if you do happen to...
06:29...can take some oral anti-inflammatories like Motrin.
06:32You can use some nice cooling gels.
06:34There are many things on the market to really help soothe the skin.
06:37And then hydrate.
06:38Don't pop the blisters, too.
06:39Sometimes, again, God forbid, look like bumps.
06:42That's when those glands that are releasing the sweat are getting trapped.
06:46You're often getting overheated.
06:48So, with that, wear loose clothing to prevent that.
06:50Use those cool compresses.
06:51And avoid thick creams if you're going to be very sweaty.
06:54All right.
06:54Let's switch off of the sun stuff and talk bug bites.
06:58I am very paranoid about ticks, but also with mosquito bites.
07:01Just like, what do we do to try to soothe ourselves and not, you know, scar or scratch?
07:05Stuff like that.
07:06Yes, definitely.
07:06So, you know, always, as far as prevent, oral Benadryl or oral antihistamines.
07:10But that, like, topical Benadryl.
07:12Many people actually get an allergic contact dermatitis to that.
07:14So, stick to just plain cortisone.
07:17That's going to be your best friend.
07:19What about calamine lotion?
07:20Calamine lotion is a good one.
07:21You can still use that one.
07:22You can still use that one.
07:23My kids are always falling, scraping.
07:25They've got sand, dirt, and all their cuts.
07:28What's the right way to take care of that?
07:29The biggest thing is there's a huge misconception that cuts need to actually get air, air them out.
07:34They need to stay moisturized.
07:36That's your best way to prevent them from trying to scarring.
07:38Yes.
07:39You actually want moisture.
07:41You want moisture.
07:41That's going to prevent scarring.
07:43But keep it covered.
07:44Wash it daily, keep it covered, and wash it immediately.
07:47What about squirting the peroxide right now?
07:48That's actually bad.
07:50I'm glad you're asking me.
07:52Peroxide, alcohol.
07:53I do not want to see what you're doing.
07:55If it burns, it's good.
07:57Yes.
07:57You wouldn't just see that.
07:58Exactly.
07:59If it burns, you're really cleaning it.
08:01Soap and water.
08:03We were on vacation and that's all she had.
08:05Yeah.
08:06Okay.
08:06She was trying.
08:07Again, no judgments out.
08:08Mom, we're good.
08:09We're good.
08:09We've forgiven you, but soap and water.
08:12Okay.
08:12Great tits.
08:13Thank you so much.
