00:00Right now, the state of Texas is fighting its second biggest wildfire in history.
00:05It's the largest they've had there in 18 years.
00:07It's called the Smokehouse Creek Fire, and it is in the Texas Panhandle.
00:11It started on Monday, and it now covers an area 11 times larger than Washington, D.C.,
00:16and it's igniting land at an average of 150 football fields every minute.
00:21It's jumping roads as ferocious winds fan the flames.
00:27The Smokehouse Creek Fire has zero containment,
00:30and it's one of five fires that is burning in the Texas Panhandle.
00:34Several thousand people have evacuated at this point,
00:36and many are navigating just harrowing scenes like this one.
00:40Listen to one survivor.
00:43This is Lucy Kavanaugh, who is on the ground there in Fritch, Texas, with the very latest.
00:48Lucy?
00:51Brianna, as you point out the street from him, his friends, his neighbors,
00:55completely destroyed.
00:56They went down in 30 minutes.
00:58It was crazy fast.
00:59Save there, though.
01:00But, Lucy, these pictures, they're really unbelievable.
01:02Lucy Kafanoff from Texas for us.
01:05And next, former President Trump, or this now,
01:08with CNN contributor and senior news writer at The Trace, Jennifer Masia here.
01:13All right, so, Jennifer, let's talk about this.
01:16What did you glean from Justice Neil Gorsuch asking today
01:20why the ATF, which is a federal agency, is banning bump stocks rather than Congress?
01:26It's a similar sentiment we heard from Justice Amy Coney Barrett.
01:31The ATF bump stock ban is unconstitutional.
01:35Will that have repercussions on other federal actions that are related to guns?
01:42Well, what's interesting is that there was just another case.
01:45I know it's not the majority of gun owners or even a sizable portion,
01:51but you still have hundreds of thousands of these that have been purchased, right?
01:56So, knowing the damage they can contribute to,
01:59what does it mean for public safety if these are available?
02:07Notably, you know, these are, they were used to some of the other headlines
02:12that we're watching this hour.
02:13Pope Francis back at the Vatican after going to the hospital today.
02:17The Vatican says the 87-year-old pontiff underwent some diagnostic tests
02:22after holding general audience this morning.
02:25Pope Francis has been in and out of the hospital here in the last year
02:28and recently canceled several audiences due to what is described as mild flu symptoms.
02:34Also, a spokesperson for Alexei Navalny is now confirming
02:37that the Russian opposition leader's funeral service will be held this Friday,
02:42two weeks after his sudden death in one of Russia's harshest prisons.
02:46The service will be taking place at a cemetery in Moscow,
02:49and it is open to the public.
02:52His widow telling the European Parliament today that she doesn't know
02:55if police will arrest people at the service.
02:57She also said that her husband's body was abused,
03:01and she blamed Vladimir Putin for his death.
03:04And Prince Harry has just lost a legal battle for taxpayer-funded security
03:08when he is in the UK.
03:10A British court today ruled that he is not entitled to full royal protection
03:15because he is no longer a working royal.
03:18Harry has insisted that he and his family have been in danger
03:21when they visit his home country.
03:22His spokesperson says Harry will appeal this decision.
03:27Historic hawk stepping down.
03:28Senator Mitch McConnell says he will step aside as Republican leader in November.
03:33We're going to have more on this Washington shakeup,
03:36all of it live from Capitol Hill, and more development.
03:41It is the end of an era on Capitol Hill.
03:44Senator Mitch McConnell says he will step down as the Republican Senate leader in November,
03:49closing out his reign as the longest-serving Senate leader in history for any party.
03:54We're told that his fellow GOP senators gave him a standing ovation at their lunch after his announcement today.
04:00But even with that show of unity, there's no denying that he's stepping aside
04:04after repeatedly butting heads with the now-dominant Donald Trump wing of the party
04:09and as Republicans grapple with serious divisions on issues like Ukraine and abortion rights.
04:14CNN's Monty Raju is on this.
04:16McConnell, who orchestrated that?
04:19Well, the first thing I'd say is tenure.
04:21He has been in this position for a very long time.
04:24The first time I met Mitch McConnell was the first thing after the achievement was criminal justice reform.
04:29That only happened because Mitch McConnell got that through the United States Senate, got behind that effort.
04:34Donald Trump doesn't talk about that anymore for a myriad of reasons.
04:37Also is someone who, while he harnessed the energy behind Donald Trump, they were not always completely aligned.
04:44He actually provoked a lot of ire, as did his wife of Trump.
04:48And I wonder, when it comes to Republicans in Congress who feel that they are sort of the caretakers of
04:56conservatism
04:58but not always fully aligned with Donald Trump, if you're seeing that kind of scaffolding crumble with his departure.
05:06Potentially so.
05:07Obviously, we talk a lot about what Reagan conservatism is and means.
05:11Who do you see in the running here, Thune, Cornyn, or Barrasso, of the three Johns who will be in
05:16contention?
05:16Obviously, we see three. They're all in leadership.
05:18There's talk that Rick Scott may run.
05:20There's talk that Tom Tillis, also from North Carolina, intentionally.
05:24I'll give you one more shot.
05:25No, who do you think has the skills and is positioned to do it?
05:28I think all three have the skills to do it.
05:30I'll tell you, Josh Hawley was asked to.
05:32He's right.
05:33Doug, thank you very much.
05:34Forrest?
05:35As if that were fallout over Alabama's controversial IVF decision.
05:39Dozens of patients and families rallied outside of the statehouse,
05:43demanding lawmakers do more to protect providers
05:46and restore IVF services.
05:49The state's high court said frozen embryos are human beings,
05:52creating potential liabilities if the embryos are destroyed.
05:56And now many families are left without access to the treatment.
06:00We have CNN's Isabel Rosales outside of the state capitol there in Montgomery.
06:06Tell us what's happening there.
06:10Hey, Brianna.
06:11So we had dozens of patients, doctors, options are,
06:14and to push these lawmakers to take action to protect IVF.
06:18I spoke with Elizabeth Goldman, who has sacrificed a lot
06:21with the futures of their families up in the air.
06:24Isabel, thank you for that report.
06:26Coming up, new to President Biden is cracking down on the sale
06:29of Americans' personal sensitive data to China and other American adversaries.
06:35We're talking about information on your health, your location, your money,
06:39which could be used for spying, hacking, or blackmail,
06:42senior U.S. officials tell CNN.
06:44Here with us now to talk about this, we have CNN's Sean Lingus.
06:48What more do we know about this executive order
06:50and the need that is prompting this?
06:53Well, Brianna, I mean, this data has been out there for a while.
06:56In the last few years, it's kind of a stopgap measure.
06:59What would foreign countries do with this information?
07:03Well, for example, say you have data, phone records of people,
07:09you know, their location of a cell phone,
07:11someone going in and out of a government facility.
07:13You could build a pattern of life based on that if you watch, you know.
07:18Boris?
07:18Now to some of the other headlines.
07:20There's disappointment, and then there's what happened in Glasgow
07:23to fans of Willy Wonka,
07:25an experience that went very, very, very wrong,
07:28crushing the hopes and dreams of children.
07:31We're following these stories and many more,
07:32all coming in right here to CNN Newsweek.
07:35President Biden's son Hunter is facing questions from lawmakers.
07:39His closed-door deposition in the House impeachment inquiry into his father
07:43is the result of months of negotiations with Republicans.
07:47And much like Hunter Biden's last appearance on the Hill,
07:50it caused quite a scene.
07:52A record number of lawmakers from both parties are expected to be in attendance,
07:56and more members of Congress, of course.
07:58That means more questions.
08:00So far, he has not pleaded the fifth.
08:02That is what we've been told.
08:03And CNN's Paula Reid is at the Capitol working her sources
08:07about what all is happening inside of this room.
08:10Paula, what can you tell us?
08:13Paula, thank you so much for that.
08:16We do appreciate it.
08:18Boris?
08:19We're joined now by...
08:20Just in, NASA and Intuitive Machines have just released historic new images
08:25captured by the U.S.-made moon lander Odysseus,
08:28and they show the moment of touch difference.
08:31Tell us what you're learning and also what we're seeing in these images.
08:35I mean, first and foremost, we got the images that we...
08:38It just didn't quite stick the landing, Brianna.
08:41But you can clearly see the moon in the background for all the doubters out there,
08:46like perhaps even your co-anchor, Boris, yesterday.
08:50It is now, you know, the company...
08:52See a little broken leg there over on the left,
08:55which is part of the reason it tipped over.
08:58But, you know, Brianna, we've got about five hours left of Odie.
09:02They said if there was anything that they could do different on future missions,
09:06one of the things would be more cameras.
09:10The chief technology officer said those data are,
09:12and they've got more missions planned now.
09:14I think so.
09:14You reminded me, though, with the landing in the 60s,
09:17it was also just audio, and then later came the pictures.
09:21We do have to remember that for all those doubters out there.
09:23Okay, this picture, it's really...
09:26It's pretty amazing.
09:27I know you said the other one's the money shot,
09:28but this one looks so active.
09:30It looks like something out of a movie on the moon.
09:32Very cool.
09:33All right, Kristen, thank you so much for that.
09:35There are a lot of...
