00:00That's Denzel Boston, 39th overall pick
00:03and the second wide receiver taken for the Browns
00:05over rookie minicamp over the weekend.
00:08Anthony Lima, Daryl Ryder, is in for Kenny,
00:10who will make his triumphant return tomorrow.
00:12Meanwhile, as always, Daryl's segment is brought to you
00:16by Scheiben Jewelers, Cleveland's premier jewelry store.
00:18When you start to hear these wide receivers,
00:23the coach talk about these wide receivers,
00:25you made a significant investment
00:28thanks to whatever seemingly blind spot that they had
00:33for how many years in the draft for wide receivers
00:36taking them early.
00:38They took two of them, one at 24th overall,
00:40Concepcion, and then Boston at 39th.
00:43Now, the only question I had for these wide receivers
00:46going into the season is,
00:48do they have a chance to be a number one?
00:50Do one of these guys have a legitimate chance
00:53to be a number one?
00:54Have they solved that issue?
00:56Since we know now, after all these years in the league
00:59and seeing him in Cleveland uniform,
01:00Jerry Judy is not a number one wide receiver in the NFL.
01:04Well, I think that's something that's going to just have
01:05to play itself out.
01:07You know, one of the frustrations with the Judy situation,
01:11and it was just the reality of it,
01:14he's not a number one wide receiver.
01:16He's a good player, okay?
01:18But he was being asked to do something that just isn't him.
01:23He's not a number one.
01:23And that's not shade at Jerry.
01:26But here he had to be the number one.
01:29And I think that, and myself included,
01:33a lot of my, even my criticism of him
01:37has been through that lens.
01:39Similar to Dylan Gabriel last year
01:40when they were giving that kid first team reps.
01:42He's a third round pick,
01:43but he's getting the first reps of practices in that.
01:45So, okay, fine, I'm looking through the lens
01:48of a starting quarterback.
01:50And so I was heavily critical of Dylan Gabriel last year.
01:53So, like, I think the number one wide receiver thing,
01:57you just have to, you know, let it play out.
01:59Well, and what did we think?
02:00And use this offseason to figure it out.
02:02And before the draft, we were honed in on three guys.
02:05Let's be honest.
02:06Right.
02:06Carnell Tate.
02:07Yep.
02:07Obviously, Lemon and Tyson.
02:10We were honed in on those guys
02:11as all being potential number ones.
02:13Right, because they would walk in
02:15from day one as the number one.
02:20And they didn't get any of those three guys.
02:22Denzel Boston and Casey Concepcion.
02:24I don't think either one of them
02:26walked through the door with the expectation
02:29or the label.
02:31Maybe that's the better way to put it.
02:32The label of being the number one
02:34wide receiver in the group, right?
02:37If I had to,
02:40I would lean more towards Casey Concepcion
02:43being the number one wide receiver.
02:45I'm kind of with you.
02:46And Jerry Judy being the two
02:48and then Denzel Boston being the three.
02:51But that's like right now.
02:54That's before seeing the rookies
02:55and the veterans on the field together.
02:58Maybe like when we get through veteran minicamp
03:01in early mid-June there,
03:05I'll have a stronger feeling
03:08or a stronger conviction about that.
03:11But yeah, as I sit here right now,
03:13yeah, I'd probably say Casey Concepcion.
03:14You're talking options, right?
03:16Not necessarily.
03:17Because when you say Boston the three,
03:19it sounds like slot only type of thing.
03:21Right.
03:22That's not what I mean.
03:23I don't mean he's a strict slot guy
03:25because you can move him around too.
03:28Again, Casey as well,
03:29like versatility is the theme
03:31of this whole offseason.
03:32Whether it was offensive line,
03:34all the linemen that they brought in
03:35through free agency in the draft,
03:37all those guys are versatile.
03:38They can play multiple positions
03:40and play them well.
03:41The wide receivers,
03:42I think they're all kind of interchangeable.
03:44They are not,
03:45hey, he's the X, he's the Y.
03:48You can move all those guys around,
03:49which is great.
03:51That's great for the Browns.
03:52And like,
03:53I know there's a segment of people
03:55that are very cynical right now
03:56about, oh great,
03:58the Browns got a bunch of
03:59number two wide receivers.
04:00Awesome.
04:00Wonderful.
04:01What do we do with that?
04:02You know what?
04:02You can do a lot with that.
04:04Even if that ultimately
04:06plays out that way, right?
04:08Okay, you don't have
04:09a Randy Moss in this group.
04:11All right?
04:13You can do a lot with,
04:16and then you throw in
04:17Harold Fannett
04:18into that mix.
04:19Well, we've honestly
04:20kind of lost in the shuffle
04:22of how much we've been talking
04:23about wide receiver.
04:24Throw in Dylan Sampson
04:25into that mix.
04:27Now you have five
04:30receiving targets, okay?
04:32And that doesn't even go deeper
04:34into the wide receiver room
04:35of what, you know,
04:36they have and they got to figure out
04:37with, you know,
04:38guys like said Tillman
04:39or whatever.
04:40Can they make something
04:40to him or not, right?
04:41So I'm actually very excited.
04:45I watched all the videos
04:47that like Mary Kay
04:48and Dan Lobby
04:49and everyone was posting
04:51from the rookie minicamp
04:52watching the videos
04:53of Boston Concepcion
04:55out there.
04:55Of course,
04:56he dropped one.
04:57Concepcion dropped one.
04:59Everybody saw it
04:59and said,
05:00well, here we go.
05:01Typical.
05:02Browns took a guy
05:02who can't catch the ball.
05:03And I'm like,
05:04I don't even know
05:05how you put any stock
05:06into anything you see
05:07this time of year.
05:08I know.
05:12I'm legitimately excited
05:15about what this wide receiver room
05:17can be.
05:17And I can't remember
05:19the last time those words
05:20ever came out of my mouth.
05:21I don't,
05:22Owen, I don't know.
05:23You can police this.
05:24I don't,
05:24I don't think I've ever said
05:25I was excited about
05:26a Browns wide receiver room
05:28before.
05:28Probably not since what?
05:29Like 2019?
05:31Landry and Odell.
05:33Yeah.
05:33Landry and Odell.
05:34Oh yeah,
05:34we were all excited about that.
05:35Because like,
05:35absolutely.
05:36Because I made a couple
05:37on that one too.
05:38Like, listen,
05:39when I'm wrong,
05:39I admit I'm wrong.
05:40Like, I remember
05:40when they traded for Odell.
05:41everyone was wrong on that.
05:42I know.
05:43Who didn't think that
05:44OBJ was going to come in
05:45and, you know,
05:46still had a thousand yards
05:47that first year.
05:48Well, I think I had written
05:50something at the time
05:50that I thought that like
05:51trading for Odell
05:52made the Browns
05:53Super Bowl contenders
05:53or something.
05:54Boy, was that,
05:55that's an old takes
05:56exposed right there.
05:57But no,
05:58this is the first time
05:59that's why he missed it.
06:01You know,
06:02this is the first time
06:03in a very,
06:03very long time
06:04where like,
06:05I am really excited
06:06about the Browns.
06:07Even with Jerry Judy,
06:09like,
06:09I am excited to see
06:11what he's going
06:12to be able to do
06:13now that all the attention
06:15and all the focus
06:17isn't on him.
06:18Yeah,
06:18can he just be,
06:19instead of having
06:20to depend upon him
06:21to, you know,
06:22get over a thousand yards
06:23and be so productive
06:24and score touchdowns
06:25like that,
06:26just,
06:27this hasn't been him.
06:28I mean,
06:28last year,
06:29last year was just,
06:30and again,
06:30we know,
06:31all three quarterbacks,
06:33we were,
06:33the offensive line,
06:34all the same stuff
06:35you'd say about Shador,
06:36you'd say about
06:37Dylan Gabriel,
06:39because the guy,
06:41like,
06:41you see,
06:41you see Jerry Judy,
06:43he gets off the line
06:44of scrimmage
06:44and gets open.
06:45Right.
06:46A lot.
06:46Like,
06:47a lot.
06:47Jerry Judy gets open
06:48a ton.
06:49Yes.
06:49That is what you want
06:50your wide receivers to do,
06:51but his productivity
06:53for being the number one target
06:55was,
06:55like,
06:56all-time bad
06:57last year.
06:58And I think that
06:59part of that was
07:00the quarterback situation.
07:01I think part of that
07:02was just his own
07:03personal frustrations
07:06with everything.
07:07And did he say
07:07at the end of the year
07:07he was dealing
07:08with something
07:08pretty significant?
07:09Right.
07:10And hopefully,
07:11and that gave me pause
07:12because,
07:13like,
07:13I was tearing him
07:13a new one every week
07:14and it's like,
07:15you know,
07:16these are human beings
07:17and hopefully
07:19everything in the personal life
07:20off the field,
07:21like,
07:21was okay.
07:21Like,
07:22I would feel horrible
07:23if I'm ripping the guy
07:23for blowing plays on Sunday
07:25and,
07:25you know,
07:26he's got something
07:26really,
07:27really serious
07:27off the field
07:28that was going on,
07:29but you're paid
07:31to do a job
07:31and last year
07:32Jerry Judy
07:32did not do the job.
07:34But I'm really
07:35intrigued to see
07:36what he's going
07:38to be able to do
07:39offensively
07:40with this,
07:41with the two additions
07:43of Concepcion
07:43and Boston
07:44to that receiver room.
07:46And again,
07:46you throw in Harold Fannin,
07:47I think
07:49if they,
07:49if they can even
07:50just get competent
07:51quarterback play,
07:52I think this could be
07:54a dynamic offense.
07:54I really do.
07:56Like,
07:56Todd Munkin.
07:57The Browns
07:58with a dynamic offense.
07:59Todd Munkin
08:00is not a system guy.
08:01Todd Munkin
08:02is a,
08:02hey,
08:03these are the guys
08:04I got to work with.
08:05Let's put something together
08:06that they can
08:07have success with.
08:08Might not be pretty
08:09at times,
08:10but that's,
08:11that's just the way
08:11she goes.
08:12And,
08:14I,
08:15like,
08:16the more I think about
08:17and,
08:18and,
08:18and,
08:19and analyze
08:20the whole
08:21big picture situation
08:23with this football team
08:24right now,
08:24I'm kind of like,
08:25actually,
08:26you know,
08:26because I,
08:27look,
08:27I wasn't crazy
08:27about hiring Todd Munkin,
08:28but now,
08:30I'm like,
08:30okay,
08:31I think this might work.
08:32And I think people like
08:32seeing the videos of him,
08:34the way he talks to this team,
08:35a little refreshing
08:36compared to
08:38the staleness
08:38that I think was fairly evident
08:40at the end of the
08:40Kevin Stefanski run.
08:41Setbacks paved the way for
08:43comeback.
08:43Come back.
