20 March - National Evening Forecast presented by Aidan McGivern
Transcript
00:00Hi there.
00:01It's going to be a weekend of chilly mornings followed by warm and bright afternoons predominantly
00:08but not entirely.
00:09A couple of things to mention.
00:11One is that a weak weather front is approaching at the moment and that's going to thicken
00:15up the cloud across the northwest of Scotland and bring some spots of rain.
00:18It will be more of a widespread feature by the time we get to Sunday but for the time
00:23being the rest of the UK will see clear skies under high pressure and with a lack of cloud
00:29overnight we will see some shallow fog patches forming especially across parts of the Midlands,
00:34East Anglia and the South East.
00:36That's where the lowest temperatures are expected.
00:38I think in urban areas low single figures, in sheltered rural spots down to minus one minus
00:44two Celsius.
00:45So certainly a chill in the air first thing Saturday.
00:48But it won't take long at all for any shallow mist and fog to lift and clear.
00:54By 8am it's back to sunny skies and rapidly rising temperatures after minus two in the
00:59morning.
00:59We can expect mid-teens into the afternoon and feeling very pleasant with light winds in that
01:04strong March sunshine.
01:06A different story for parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland.
01:09Here, thicker cloud arrives, mostly medium and high-level cloud for Northern Ireland and
01:13Southern Scotland, so staying bright.
01:15But north of the central belt it's thicker and it will bring some light, showery rain mostly
01:20to the Northwest Highlands as well as the Outer Hebrides.
01:23Further south there's not a drop of rain in sight and it is, like I say, going to feel
01:26very pleasant in that strong March sunshine.
01:29Although on the east coast you'll notice a breeze off the North Sea which at the moment
01:33is nine or ten Celsius in the south east, seven or eight across the coast of Scotland.
01:38So that breeze will feel chilly.
01:41Heading into Saturday night and it's a similar theme for the southern half of the UK.
01:46That's where we keep the clearest skies and the lightest winds.
01:48You can see frosted fog forming in the usual spots, East Anglia, South East England especially,
01:54patches elsewhere.
01:56But for Scotland and Northern Ireland, well, the thicker cloud edges south.
02:00Spots of rain for Northern Ireland, Western and Northern Scotland.
02:03More persistent wet weather reaching the Northwest Highlands, a freshening breeze as well.
02:08So, of course, that's going to keep things frost-free.
02:10Eight Celsius in the northwest of Scotland, further south that's where it's going to be coldest.
02:13Minus one, minus two Celsius once again in sheltered spots of the south east.
02:18But once more through the morning, those rapidly rising temperatures and plenty of sunshine
02:24for the southern half of the UK developing.
02:27There will be some high cloud drifting into the north and west of Wales, the Midlands by
02:32the afternoon.
02:33More extensive and thicker cloud for Northern England, Northern Ireland, Southern Scotland,
02:38bringing again some light showery room but nothing substantial.
02:42Showers, but all interspersed by brighter spells for the northwest of Scotland.
02:47A brisk breeze and a colder feel with a change in wind direction, 9 to 10 Celsius.
02:52Not quite as warm further south because of the arrival of some layers of cloud, 14 Celsius
02:57most likely.
02:59Into the start of next week.
03:00It stays quiet at first, but gradually we're going to see the weather become more changeable
03:04with, often, the winds coming from the north or northwest.
03:07So that will bring with it showers and also a colder feel from the middle of the week.
