20 February - National Evening Forecast presented by Aidan McGivern
Transcript
00:00Hi there. Welcome to the latest update from the Met Office. A very different feel heading
00:05into the weekend. Still wet, but much milder. Actually, drier for a time through the evening
00:12as one band of rain clears, but it's not long before another band of rain moves through
00:16parts of Wales, Northern Ireland, much of central and northern England, and then into
00:20Scotland. And so it's in the east and the north where we've got some damp weather to
00:24end the night. Nothing especially heavy. Towards the southwest, a drier start to the
00:29weekend, mostly cloudy, and with this mild southwesterly breeze, virtually everywhere
00:34will be frost-free. One exception, Shetland, where clear spells and a colder air mass will
00:40lead to a touch of frost to begin the weekend. Otherwise, it's mild, it's gloomy, and we
00:46can expect further spells of rain. What's happened? Well, a shift in the wind direction has happened.
00:51Instead of the south-easterlies that we saw so much of during the year so far, we've now
00:55got much milder west-to-southwesterlies. You can see the boundary, though. You can see
01:01the colder northerlies still affecting Shetland. They will disappear as we go through the weekend.
01:06But for the time being, the mild southwesterlies are sending more cloud and more rain towards
01:11the UK. At first, it's drier. In fact, across parts of England and Wales, once this initial
01:18band of rain eases off, Saturday morning is the best time, really, for making the most of
01:23any dry and perhaps some brighter weather. That gets squeezed out and confined to the
01:28east by the afternoon. The west turns wet and cloudy. The cloud lowering onto hills,
01:34very gloomy. And it's western hills where we'll see the heaviest rain. You can see the bright
01:38colours there. Western Scotland, northwest England, north Wales, areas where we didn't get that much
01:43rain during January and the first half of February, now getting a soaking. Further south,
01:48the rain on and off. And it's certainly going to feel very different out there, even if it's the same
01:54old grey and damp picture, because temperatures, widely in the double figures, if not the teens,
01:59could get 14 or 15 Celsius. That would make Saturday the warmest day of the year so far.
02:06Once again, though, the northeast of Scotland, brighter, drier, but colder feel. Now, that doesn't
02:13last too long because the rain in the west, that's associated with a warm front, which does eventually
02:18push through Orkney and Shetland. And by that stage, the milder or at least the average temperatures
02:25are spreading across the whole of the country. Once the rain eases off, another bout of wet weather
02:30pushes back into the southwest to end the night on Saturday night. It's another mild start to the day,
02:36widely across the UK, generally frost free, if not double figures. But we've got a close eye on this
02:42system because we don't want more rain in the south. We've had enough. And it could cause a few issues
02:47first thing Sunday. It looks likely to clear quickly enough to avoid serious issues, but we've
02:54got an eye on it. And that does clear to sunny spells across many parts of England and Wales.
02:58Not many showers actually behind that. The showers mostly focused across Scotland and Northern Ireland
03:04on Sunday afternoon. Some heavy downpours, they'll be rattling in thick and fast on a gusty wind.
03:10But that gusty wind, of course, bringing the mild air. So once again, temperatures in the teens in
03:15places, perhaps a degree or so down on Saturday afternoons. And then into the start of next week,
03:20it's more of the same. Further spells of rain coming in from the Atlantic, followed by showers
03:25staying mild Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday as well. But this time the rain will be focused across Western
03:31Scotland, Northwest England and North Wales, rather than the more sensitive areas of Southern UK
03:38Northern UK and North East Scotland.
