15 May - National Evening Forecast presented by Aidan McGivern

00:00Hi there.
00:01This may be the last night for a while that gardeners and growers have to worry about
00:05an overnight frost.
00:06It's certainly going to be a cold one, but warmer weather is on the way, albeit very
00:11gradually over the next few days.
00:13Overnight, we've got clear spells developing, showers easing in many places, although continuing
00:18in the far north and east for a time, and then some more patchy rain moving into Northern
00:23Ireland, parts of Wales and the southwest with thickening cloud.
00:26It's across central and northern parts of the UK where we've got the clearest skies
00:30for longest, the lightest winds, and as a result, with Arctic air in place, temperatures even
00:37in urban areas dipping to four or five Celsius, two or three for Edinburgh and Glasgow, but
00:43in sheltered rural spots, an air frost couldn't be ruled out even across some central and southern
00:48parts of the country.
00:50But it is likely, like I say, to be the coldest night for some time.
00:55Because gradually, winds are changing in the direction, we lose that northerly feed, and
01:00through the weekend, westerlies begin to return.
01:03It's going to happen slowly, so we begin the day on Saturday with that chill in the air,
01:08but plenty of sunshine for Scotland for northern and eastern England.
01:11Ever so slowly, clouds thicken from the west, persistent rain arrives into Northern Ireland,
01:16the west and southwest of Scotland, Western England and Wales.
01:18Some dribs and drabs of rain starting to affect central and eastern parts by the end of the
01:23afternoon, but decent sunny spells towards the east, and especially northeast Scotland,
01:28feeling more pleasant in those brighter spells compared with the recent days, but not, you
01:34wouldn't call it warm just yet.
01:35And in the west, with the damp weather, not especially pleasant.
01:38The spells of rain migrate eastwards overnight, and a very showery start to Sunday, but generally
01:47frost-free because of that change in wind direction.
01:49We're talking about 8 to 10 Celsius, rather than low single figures.
01:54Showers for the southeast, and more especially for the north and northwest.
01:58Longer spells of rain moving through northern Scotland for a time.
02:01This breaks up into showers, and then by the afternoon on Sunday, it's simply sunny spells
02:05and frequent showers for Scotland, Northern Ireland, Northern and Western England, as well
02:08as Wales.
02:09Some of these will be heavy.
02:10They'll be moving through on brisk winds.
02:12The Midlands, East Anglia, the south and southeast, generally fewer showers, a better
02:16chance of some sunshine coming through.
02:19Temperatures once again a degree or so up compared with Saturdays, so this gradual day-by-day increase
02:25in temperatures is underway through the weekend.
02:29And it continues through next week, but if you're looking forward to something a bit
02:33drier and warmer, you may not be, but if you are, you're going to have to be patient because
02:39initially next week, low pressure will bring spells of rain and a strengthening wind.
02:44Once that system moves through middle of next week, higher pressure begins to build from
02:50Wednesday and it's that high from the southeast that begins to settle things down just in time
02:56for the bank holiday weekend with a trend towards higher than average temperatures and in some
03:01places the mid-twenties by the end of the week.
03:04Alex Burkle has more on that on our YouTube channel.
03:07But for now, enjoy your weekend.
03:09Bye-bye.
03:10.
03:11.
