00:00The Browns, we're still waiting to see what they're going to do
00:03as far as maybe trying to bring in a wide receiver.
00:05I think we're looking forward to that as well.
00:07Again, he is Jeff Phelps.
00:08I'm Andy Baskin, and we are set to talk to our good friend.
00:12He sets the gold standard because he hosts the gold zone
00:15and did a fantastic job during the Olympics.
00:19It was always awesome to see him on the tube
00:21while I was watching the Olympics the last couple weeks.
00:23He is Mr. Andrew Siciliano, and of course,
00:25he is on the Make It Right, Call Kyle Wright hotline.
00:28Hi, Andrew. How are you?
00:29Hi, Andrew.
00:29Good morning. Good afternoon, friends.
00:32How are you? Have we not spoken since the Olympics?
00:34Yeah, I don't think I've talked to you since the Olympics.
00:36You're waiting for time. Thank you.
00:37Yeah, you did a great job always watching you do this.
00:41Is it fun? I mean, it's changed pace.
00:43Yeah, of course. It's a blast, honestly.
00:46I mean, for lack of stating, for the risk of stating the obvious,
00:52it's the Olympics.
00:53It only happens every couple of years.
00:55Everyone's watching.
00:56It's an honor to be called every time the phone rings
00:58and they say, hey, do you want to do gold mode again?
01:00I'm like, you know what, Luke?
01:02So, yeah.
01:03And I was able to do a second show this year on USA that ran all night,
01:08which was kind of cool as well.
01:09So I had a blast.
01:10Was that?
01:11But more importantly, it's amazing.
01:15It's an honor to tell the stories of these athletes
01:18that have quite literally worked their entire lives for this moment.
01:24It's not like a Tuesday night NBA game.
01:28You know what I'm saying?
01:28It's like, not that those guys don't work hard,
01:30but you know what I'm saying?
01:31This is their moment, their entire life.
01:33So just to tell you how seamless it is, I'm going to ask the question.
01:36Were you in L.A. or were you in Paris?
01:38Oh, no, no.
01:39I was better yet, guys.
01:41I was in Stamford, Connecticut, which is the Milan of Connecticut.
01:46Wow.
01:49NBC headquarters, sports headquarters, is in Stamford,
01:53about 40 minutes outside New York City.
01:55It is a massive facility.
01:57I mean, it's like the size of a stadium.
02:00They have 17 control rooms.
02:03Wow.
02:04They had 1,700 people working there for Milan.
02:07There were 2,700 people working there for Paris.
02:12So most, I mean, Tirico in primetime is clearly at Milan,
02:18but most of the studio shows that you see are done from Stamford, Connecticut.
02:25Wow.
02:26They put you all up in a big dorm?
02:27Yeah.
02:28Have a big cafeteria?
02:28They have it down to a science.
02:32They buy out pretty much every hotel in Stamford and in Greenwich,
02:37and they have buses like vans going, no joke, every 30 minutes, 24 hours a day for three weeks.
02:46Wow.
02:46So no matter what time you're on, and there's a six-hour time change to Italy and was to Paris
02:52as well,
02:53no matter what time you're working, no matter what your job is,
02:57just go downstairs to the hotel, and there will be a shuttle there to take you 24 hours a day
03:02to the office.
03:03Very cool.
03:03Very cool.
03:04Yeah.
03:05It's really good.
03:07Anybody on the slopes who can play quarterback?
03:09Or wide receiver?
03:12That's a great question.
03:14I mean, Miles is out there supporting Chloe.
03:16I know he's not a quarterback.
03:19That was cool.
03:20No.
03:21Quarterbacks, skiing, curling, no.
03:26Highly unlikely.
03:27That's the question, isn't it?
03:28I mean, if the defense, even if the defense were to take a small step back,
03:35let's say, God forbid, the defense fell to 10th in the league.
03:39If you can put an offense on the field, I know we've been banging our heads against the wall with
03:44this the last couple of years.
03:46You know, there's a lane to get there.
03:50You just got to figure out the quarterback part.
03:54And maybe the answer is in the building.
03:55Maybe the answer is not.
03:57Tell me if you think this thinking is off base or if it's in line.
04:04Okay.
04:05They didn't make any big move.
04:07They didn't bring in anybody who clearly screams, I will be the starting quarterback.
04:12So if you actually go into this with Deshaun Watson and Shadour, let's say Deshaun wins the job.
04:20It screams to me, okay, when the contract's up, you figure out what you get in the 2027 draft.
04:25If Shadour beats out Deshaun, it screams, hey, good luck.
04:29If you're really hit, maybe you can be the guy.
04:32If not, here comes the 2027 draft.
04:36Well, there's a third option here as well.
04:39Okay.
04:39Explain.
04:41And that is Deshaun wins the job and plays well.
04:44Under your theory, he would win the job and not play well.
04:47Am I putting words in your mouth or reading?
04:50Well, a little bit.
04:51But my thinking is, would you actually re-sign him when his contract's up or would you just move on?
04:56I mean, that's way down the line.
04:59I know where you're going and I see where you're going.
05:02It's like, not changing the topic here, but like the Vikings, all right?
05:05So they went out and they made the move for Kyler and they're paying him nothing.
05:08It's a free quarterback.
05:09In fact, the Cardinals pay his salary for all intents and purposes.
05:14They can't tag him.
05:16That was in the agreement.
05:17So let's say he plays lights out and they can't tag him and to re-sign him, they have to
05:23write a massive check,
05:24which is exactly what they were trying, the cycle they were trying to get out of by drafting J.J.
05:31McCarthy.
05:31So it's almost like, well, if he plays great, then that's wonderful.
05:36But now we're stuck again paying a massive bill for a quarterback, and that's what we're trying to avoid.
05:41Back to the Browns.
05:43Look, it would be a great problem to have, wouldn't it?
05:46Yes.
05:47I mean, yeah, they make a run to a wild card, get it in the postseason.
05:51It would be a nice problem to have.
05:53I would never say never.
05:55That is so far down the line.
05:57And in the perfect world, Shador plays great, all due respect to Deshaun, because that's a cheaper quarterback.
06:05It's price control.
06:06And I'm not trying to be cheap, but look at, say, the Patriots or the Commanders or the Broncos or
06:12teams or the Bears, right?
06:14Teams that have found their quarterback in the draft.
06:17And those quarterbacks are much more expensive, comparatively speaking, because they were first-round quarterbacks.
06:21And it helps you spend elsewhere and build the team.
06:26And there's no right answer here, guys.
06:29I mean, there's another world in which they just say, to heck with it, here's pick 37 traded for Mac
06:33Jones and say, we built up our offensive line.
06:37We could find a wide receiver in the draft.
06:40Now we have a quarterback.
06:42There's that way to do it as well.
06:43I don't get the sense that that's going to happen, but I've been surprised in the past.
06:48Yeah, I was going to say, do you think there's that outside influence quarterback that he kind of talked about
06:54the, you know, the not-in-the-building quarterback that they could bring in?
06:57Because, you know, Jeff and I said, we're like, is there a guy out there that's a free agent right
07:02now that you could bring in and say, okay, he's the starting quarterback?
07:05Or are you better off looking to make a trade to bring in somebody?
07:10I'll give you the free agents.
07:12They are, in no particular order.
07:13Aaron Rodgers.
07:15Not happening.
07:17Keep going.
07:17Kirk Cousins.
07:20Doesn't feel like it would happen.
07:22Jim Garoppolo.
07:25Jeff, you want that one?
07:27He's going to be great with Sean McVay again.
07:30Yeah.
07:31He hasn't resigned yet.
07:33Russell Wilson.
07:36Those are the guys.
07:38I mean, those are the guys of note.
07:40The only guy that could be a possibility is Cousins, and I don't see that.
07:45Do you?
07:47I don't.
07:48Kirk now, listen, if you hand him the job, Kirk wants to play.
07:52There are really only two.
07:54Take the Browns out of it for a second.
07:55There are really only two other jobs out there right now, and they would be Arizona.
08:00Jacoby Brissett has it currently.
08:02And Vegas.
08:04Vegas would be a very similar situation to what he went into in Atlanta with one massive caveat.
08:09Here, he knows they're taking a quarterback in the first round in Vegas and Mendoza, whereas in Atlanta, he was
08:15surprised.
08:16We were all surprised.
08:17Kirk was burned by that.
08:20He doesn't want to go into that situation again.
08:22And even if he went to Vegas right now, knowing they're taking Mendoza, you then get stuck in the, wow,
08:30the kid looks great in the preseason because it's the preseason.
08:37And a new coach feels the pressure to just say to heck with it.
08:40We're going to throw him out there.
08:42Mendoza, that is, in September, week one or week two or week three.
08:45And then Cousins gets only two weeks.
08:47And then what is he doing?
08:48So I think Kirk wants to wait to see how the draft plays out and then maybe make a more
08:54informed choice.
08:56So, no, I don't think he'd be a Browns quarterback.
08:58And wouldn't you throw Pittsburgh into that mix, too?
09:02To not knowing who their quarterback is?
09:04Yeah, yeah.
09:05If Aaron doesn't go back to the Steelers, then, yeah, the Steelers have to figure it out.
09:10Do they roll with Will Howard?
09:11Do they draft a quarterback?
09:12Or do they call Kirk Cousins?
09:14I don't think they wouldn't call Russell.
09:16I don't think, I don't know that Garoppolo would be in play there.
09:20You know, can we talk about Rodgers for a second?
09:23Sure.
09:23People just assume, I think the league assumes he's going to go back there.
09:26I am one of the few people, and my colleague on my Yahoo show, Jory Epstein, kind of feels the
09:30same way,
09:31that reads his appearance on McAfee a little bit different.
09:35It was two weeks before free agency.
09:38It was one day after Kyler Murray and the Cardinals, the news broke that he was going to be elsewhere.
09:45Not officially, but unofficially.
09:48And it almost seemed as if he was saying, hey, guys, like, there's no offer.
09:53There's no deadline.
09:54Well, there's no deadline because there's no offer.
09:56Like, I love the place.
09:59And I'm putting words in his mouth and reading between the lines here.
10:01I love the place.
10:02And they talked up Will Howard, almost like, all right, really, you want to go with Will Howard?
10:06I love him.
10:08But I don't know that this is Aaron waiting.
10:12Part of my gut says this is the Steelers waiting to make an offer.
10:17Maybe I'm wrong.
10:19If you go based on last year, why wouldn't you?
10:21I think you're right.
10:22The way things played out last year and it took forever, right?
10:25Why wouldn't you?
10:26He wants to go there.
10:27He wants to go there.
10:29And he knows that it's his only option at this point.
10:33And they haven't.
10:35Maybe I'm wrong.
10:36Maybe I'm wrong.
10:37But this thing should be figured out by now.
10:40It isn't like last year.
10:42There are no other options for him.
10:44He wanted to go to Minnesota last year.
10:46I think he wanted to go to L.A. last year.
10:48Neither of those options happened.
10:50So he went to Pittsburgh.
10:51I think it worked out reasonably well.
10:53I mean, reasonably well.
10:55It wasn't that good.
10:56It was better than the alternatives.
10:59I wonder if they truly deep down inside want him.
11:02This is just me speculating without a lot of inside information.
11:07I fully concede this.
11:09Just trying to read between lines.
11:12Does it surprise you that we're sitting here on March 19th and the Browns haven't as of yet,
11:19and those are the keywords as of yet, added anybody at wide receiver?
11:24Uh, no, I don't think so.
11:26Um, you know, the Michael Pittman move was kind of a move that when the Steelers made it, you're like,
11:32yeah, that would have been the Andrew Barry move, you know, going in years past, whether it's a Murray Cooper
11:37or Jerry Judy.
11:38That one to me was like, eh, maybe that one would have worked.
11:41There's really not any guaranteed money the Steelers added to the deal beyond this year.
11:46He's, he's kind of what you wanted Cedric Tillman to be, you know, the big body guy that can make
11:50catches, that can make contested catches and, um, you know, play outside, play a little bit in the slot, be
11:56a big slot if needed.
11:57Uh, but they didn't do that move.
12:00Uh, is there going to be a veteran wide receiver beyond Tylan Wallace added?
12:04Maybe.
12:05I don't know, but I know we're all circling six or 24 in the first round.
12:10I would love to see that.
12:11But more importantly, you would love to see that guy be an immediate contributor.
12:16I love what they did with the offensive line.
12:18Truly people look at the age.
12:20Yes.
12:21Elton Jenkins and Titus Howard are older players.
12:24Zion Johnson is not, um, Zion had some up and down moments, but he was reliable.
12:29He's an exceedingly bright guy.
12:32Uh, I think he'd be a culture builder as well in that room.
12:35And, uh, the chargers had a lot of mouths to see.
12:39They didn't pick up his fifth year option.
12:40In essence, the Browns said, we'll pay your fifth year option.
12:42We'll tack on another year guaranteed at pretty much the same.
12:46Or at least a close price.
12:47Chargers kind of sort of wanted him back.
12:49Browns made a better offer.
12:50I think that is, that's a foundational piece there.
12:53Hopefully he can continue, you know, uh, getting better.
12:57I think he's a, he's a good player.
12:58The offensive line has been addressed.
13:00You still need a left tackle.
13:01Clearly.
13:02You still need at least one or two more pieces and depth pieces.
13:04Let's not forget depth.
13:06Um, quarterback and wide receiver are your next big issues.
13:09I'm not telling you guys anything you don't know.
13:11All right.
13:11So let's play off that then.
13:12Ready?
13:13You got the draft.
13:14You got three high draft picks.
13:15With the second round pick in there too.
13:17Are you wide receiver, wide receiver, offensive line?
13:21Are you offensive line, offensive line, wide receiver?
13:23Give me the, I'm not asking for names.
13:25Give me the mix of positions.
13:27Are you a stud defensive player?
13:29Well, there you go too.
13:30Give me the mix.
13:31Give me the mix.
13:32It depends who's off the board.
13:33Honestly.
13:34If you're walking into this though, and you've got a game plan, Andrew, you got it.
13:37Let's just say everyone's available that you want them to be available.
13:40Now go.
13:42I, I, okay.
13:43I would tell you right now that the top five ahead of the Browns, there are as many question
13:47marks as to who's going to go before them.
13:51Us five weeks out as I have ever seen ever.
13:54And the drop off in the offensive line talent between six and 24 is far, far bigger than
14:02it is a wide receiver.
14:03So I would go O-line at six, but it, it depends on who's gone.
14:09Like, for example, let's go through this.
14:11We know who's going one.
14:12Do you have any idea who's going two?
14:13You assume the Jets go defense, right?
14:16You would assume.
14:17Assume.
14:17Yeah.
14:18Okay.
14:18You hope the Jets go defense.
14:20Do you have any idea what Arizona is doing at three?
14:23No, you could be trading us.
14:25Marvin Harrison.
14:26How's that?
14:26Could be tackle.
14:27It could be tackle.
14:29It could be edge.
14:31What about Tennessee?
14:33It's likely edge.
14:35It could be Carnell Tate.
14:37It could be Jeremiah.
14:37It could be Jeremiah.
14:38I love.
14:39Yeah.
14:39Put him with five.
14:41Does the trail Ed, does the trail Edmond signing in free agency preclude the Giants from
14:47going Sonny Stiles at five?
14:49You'd love the Giants to go Sonny Stiles at five, right?
14:54Yes.
14:55But they just gave big money to a linebacker.
14:57So what do they do at five?
14:59In a perfect world, in a perfect world for me, I don't think Downs goes fives, but that's
15:05just me.
15:05Okay.
15:05In a perfect world, you want Carnell Tate, Jeremiah Love, and all the O-linemen still there
15:15at six.
15:15You want the Jets to go Reese, you want the Cardinals to go Bailey, you want the Titans.
15:26It probably doesn't work.
15:28There's probably got to be one offensive player off the board.
15:31But if you could have Love, Tate, and Freeling all on the board at six, then you want someone
15:38to come up for Jeremiah Love.
15:40Yeah.
15:40I was going to say, you don't want to draft him.
15:41You want to get somebody to trade for him.
15:43Exactly.
15:44Love is the one player for my money that people behind you would be willing to trade
15:51up for.
15:52But one big caveat, the two teams that would want Jeremiah Love are the Saints and the
15:56Chiefs.
15:57And what did the Saints and the Chiefs both do in free agency?
15:59They spent money on running backs.
16:01The Saints on A-chan or A-T-A and the Chiefs on Kenneth Walker.
16:08So does that prevent them from getting a running back now?
16:11Maybe, maybe not.
16:13I don't know.
16:14Oh, you've made it so intriguing.
16:16Fascination.
16:17Yes.
16:18Like, in a perfect world, if I'm Andrew Barry, I know bronze fans don't want to hear trade
16:24down.
16:24I know.
16:25You're like, trade down is the majority.
16:27I'm okay with that.
16:27Okay?
16:28I love the idea, actually.
16:29If you move down two picks, got your tackle.
16:34Let's say you move down.
16:35Let's say you move down one pick and picked up a third to go down to seven so that Washington
16:41can be sure gets up and gets Jeremiah Love and that you, at seven, get whoever you want
16:46with an extra third.
16:47I mean, you would take that deal every day.
16:49Ding, ding, ding.
16:51Ding.
16:51Yep.
16:52Or move down to eight so that the Saints can move up and get their running back.
16:58Well played.
17:00Well played.
17:01I don't know.
17:02I'm just spitballing here.
17:04I like it, though.
17:05It's all right.
17:06That's why you're the gold standard, man.
17:07I like it.
17:08That's why we like hanging with you.
17:10I don't know if it's the gold standard, but you guys are way too nice.
17:13You're the gold standard.
17:14Goodbye, Andrew.
17:14We've got to take off.
17:15Thanks, man.
17:16Thanks, bud.
17:16Okay.
17:17Happy tournament day to you and yours.
17:19Please avoid meteors.
17:20Talk to you later.
17:22Goodbye, Andrew.
