00:00We keep hearing external veteran option.
00:03I think we can amend those words, Andy.
00:06Okay, go ahead.
00:08External veteran option.
00:10Who will not come in here and become the starting quarterback
00:13of the Cleveland Browns?
00:16Feels that way.
00:17It does, doesn't it?
00:18Yeah, they would have to trade for a quarterback.
00:20For a while, there was thought that, wow, external veteran option
00:23who can come in and actually be the quarterback of this team.
00:27That doesn't – unless Kirk Cousins ends up here,
00:32and I don't think Aaron Rodgers is ending up here.
00:35If Aaron Rodgers were to end up here, we'd all be stunned,
00:38and he would be the starter.
00:39Yeah.
00:39He wouldn't come here to be anybody's backup.
00:41That's true.
00:43I don't think Russell Wilson would answer the question,
00:46who's your starting quarterback?
00:48Zach Wilson wouldn't do that.
00:50Joe Flacco wouldn't do that.
00:52Jimmy Garoppolo wouldn't do that.
00:54Carson Wentz, nope.
00:57I just don't think there's anybody out there other than Cousins
01:01who answers that question.
01:03So to use Dan Lobby's great line that he wrote a couple weeks ago
01:08from the PlainDealerInCleveland.com where he said,
01:12they're going to add somebody to this group,
01:14otherwise we're going to get the Deshaun Watson,
01:18Shadour Sanders competition that they keep threatening us with.
01:22You've been threatened, Jeff.
01:24Dan, that's the best darn line.
01:28And guess what?
01:30Looking like a reality, Andy.
01:32Feels that way.
01:33Yeah.
01:33I can't imagine any other scenario right now,
01:36but I do think that, not even we were talking about wide receiver before,
01:39but also a quarterback, the only other way they're doing it,
01:42it's a trade.
01:43Like Anthony Richardson, are you starting?
01:47If he comes in, he has a chance to compete.
01:50If you were to pick up Anthony Richardson in a trade,
01:54and I know Mary Kay Cabot, who's expected to join us tomorrow at 11,
01:57I believe, as always.
01:59Mary Kay wrote over the weekend, nope, that's off.
02:02That's not happening.
02:03Browns are not going to do that.
02:05If by chance that changes, and they brought in Anthony Richardson,
02:09there's no way you'd just say he's your starting quarterback.
02:12He would be a guy who would come in here, and I might even, Andy,
02:17unless Todd Munkin is so impressed by him and thinks it's time,
02:22I would think you would start somebody else and let Anthony sit for a year
02:26and learn your system and go.
02:27So he's still younger than Shadour and Dylan Gabriel.
02:31You're keeping three quarterbacks in?
02:34Well, in the training camp.
02:35Well, you would have four at training camp, yeah.
02:38I'm just saying, if you're trading for Richardson, he's on the roster.
02:41And then Andrew Barry will do what he always does.
02:43He trades one.
02:45Yeah, maybe you'd have to trade Richardson again right before the –
02:48Or Dylan.
02:48You can't trade Watson.
02:49Or Dylan.
02:50You'd probably have to trade Dylan or Shadour.
02:53And if you brought Richardson in –
02:55And if you don't like –
02:56If Richardson comes in and he doesn't do what you want him to do,
02:59you just cut him.
03:01Hate to say that.
03:02Yeah, that's true.
03:03I mean, Justin Fields has been a starter.
03:04But you're giving up something to get him, though.
03:06What are you willing to give up?
03:08However, Justin Fields is getting traded to Kansas City for a sixth in 2027.
03:13If he goes in and they don't like him, so what if they cut him?
03:16He lost a sixth-round pick.
03:18Whippy fizz.
03:20Yeah.
03:21You know?
03:21And the Browns could do the same thing with Anthony Richardson.
03:24For a sixth?
03:25A fifth.
03:25They're probably going to give him one of their fifths.
03:27They have three fifths.
03:28I would think.
03:28And you might even need to give him a player.
03:31Well, now you're giving up something for him.
03:33Well, if you traded a quarterback, say Dylan Gabriel, and a draft pick.
03:39That gives them another quarterback.
03:40Yeah.
03:40Yeah.
03:42And they'll need one because Daniel Jones is –
03:44You'd be okay with that, wouldn't you?
03:46Yeah.
03:46I think Anthony Richardson is a guy that is intriguing enough that I wouldn't mind seeing my offensive guru, head
03:53coach, get a chance to work with him.
03:55I wonder what Indy would want.
03:57I'm sure they don't want a whole lot.
03:58I'm sure they'd want a lot, and I'm sure they're not going to get it.
04:03I don't know.
04:04I can look at that two ways.
04:06Like, I hear what you're saying.
04:07That was a fourth overall pick, and it hasn't worked.
04:08I know.
04:09What was Justin Fields, 11th overall?
04:11Yeah, so that's my point, Jeff, is the return on investment for these high-draft quarterbacks is never what you
04:18think it is.
04:19It's pennies on the dollar.
04:20Well, if they don't work out, that's for sure.
04:23Right?
04:24It's pennies on the dollar.
04:25Justin was the 11th pick in the 2021 draft.
04:27Yeah.
04:28And look what's happened to that poor kid's career.
04:31I mean, I think everybody thought that he was going to be better than he's been, and he just –
04:37it hasn't worked for him.
04:39And he's bounced around so much, he hasn't had a chance to settle in.
04:44Really?
04:45I don't know.
04:46Bears are a meat grinder, too.
04:47Last three years, this will be his fourth team in four years.
04:49Bears, Steelers, Jets, now Chiefs.
04:51Justin Fields will always be the definition of a team let down a quarterback more than a quarterback let down
04:57a team.
04:57Dano, I can't disagree with you at all.
04:59It just – I remember sitting there watching those Bears game with Matt Nagy calling those plays
05:04and just watching how they were using Justin Fields going, what are you doing?
05:08You're making nothing easy on your quarterback.
05:11There are no layups in this offense.
05:13There are no easy plays.
05:15There are no easy throws, easy reads, anything to help the cause.
05:19They just kind of threw him out there and said, all right, buddy, here's a full-blown offense.
05:22You've got this.
05:23Go get him, Tiger.
05:24And they just slammed him into the dirt for 16 games.
05:27Go get him, Tiger.
05:28And then the Bears cut him loose and it looked okay for a little bit with Arthur Smith and the
05:33Steelers.
05:34And I think anybody who was with the Jets probably gets a mulligan.
05:37I think that's true.
05:38You know what?
05:39Here's a crazy stat.
05:39Except for Zach Wilson.
05:40That poor guy has been hung out to dry.
05:42Zach Wilson's a different category.
05:44We go through starting court.
05:46Maybe Caleb Williams has settled in now in Chicago.
05:49He looks – he's their guy.
05:51Yeah, but do you know how many different quarterbacks they've used since 19?
05:53Oh, they've gone nuts.
05:55Nine.
05:55Well, and again, you know, they drafted Mitch Strabisky at second overall.
05:59Yeah.
06:00And I've said this numerous times and nobody really looks at the numbers.
06:06I'm not saying that Mitch was good there.
06:08Mitch actually had a decent record there.
06:12And I was always surprised.
06:15And then Dan's rolling his eyes and laughing.
06:18I was surprised that they bailed on Mitch and went to Justin Fields.
06:22I can't believe he was there four years.
06:24I believe it completely.
06:25I thought it was a lot shorter than that.
06:26If you go back and watch those games, the eye test will tell you
06:29the defense was carrying that team at that point.
06:31Well, but I mean, you have –
06:32The Bears defense was awesome.
06:33You have that.
06:34I mean, that happens sometimes.
06:36I'm just – I'm still surprised that they didn't roll with Mitch
06:40and went with Justin Fields.
06:41And now – but if you're Justin Fields, congratulations.
06:46You're going to go to Kansas City.
06:48You're probably going to start there until Patrick Mahomes is good to go.
06:52Now, how many games is that going to be?
06:54Who knows?
06:56But you're going to have Andy Reid to work with.
06:58You're going to have Patrick Mahomes to learn from.
07:01That could end up being a career-saving move for Justin Fields.
07:07And he could end up staying in Kansas City as a backup.
07:11Or he goes to finishing school in Kansas City and ends up somewhere else.
07:16You know what I'm going to do next time I feel bad about the
07:17Browns quarterback situation?
07:19I don't know, Andy.
07:19You tell me.
07:20I am going to go back and look at the Bears quarterback situation.
07:23Oh, yeah.
07:24It makes me feel good.
07:25It's pretty crummy.
07:26Like, I'm going back to Bob Avellini, and I'm like, ah, you know what?
07:30Their quarterback situation has been pretty bad over the years.
07:33I was a big Jack Cancannon fan myself.
07:35I thought you were a…
07:37Bobby Douglas.
07:38Steve Bradley?
07:39Does that do anything for you?
07:40I was a Bobby Douglas fan.
07:41The old lefty who ran like crazy.
07:43Rex Grossman made a Super Bowl with them.
07:45Like, that tells you all you need to know.
07:46Rex Grossman made the Super Bowl.
07:49That's amazing.
07:50Yeah.
07:50Jim McMahon won one.
07:52Yeah.
07:53Bears defenses have always typically end up being pretty good.
07:57How many years did McMahon start there?
07:58Well, but think about this.
08:00No, no.
08:00They had one of the best defenses in history,
08:02and he could turn around and hand the ball off to Walter Payton.
08:05That helps.
08:06How'd that work?
08:07Yeah, I take that back.
08:08Seven.
08:08Yeah.
08:09Which just goes to show, if you have competent quarterback play,
08:15and that's what the Browns are in search of.
08:18Competent quarterback play.
08:19Whew.
08:21Yeah, let me know when it shows up.
08:23Hopefully go with a good defense.
08:26Maybe it'll show up with Todd Munkin.
08:30Maybe.
08:31Maybe.
08:31I keep asking everybody that joins us, our regulars,
08:35are we a better team than we were a couple weeks ago?
08:37Yeah, that's been your question.
08:38I just don't feel like we are.
08:40You know why?
08:41Because we're not.
08:41We haven't seen him on the field yet.
08:43We have a lot of faith in some guys they put together on the offensive line.
08:49Let me give you, I was just going to ask you a question about that,
08:52and I want your thought.
08:53Yeah.
08:53Is it fair to say, is this rude of me?
08:57Is this wrong of me?
08:59Yes.
08:59What the Browns basically did was go out and sign three average to slightly,
09:06maybe above average, and maybe I'm being generous, offensive linemen,
09:12as opposed to having three guys who were, I think, clearly above average,
09:20but not available as often as they needed to be.
09:24And, you know, sorry that a guy got hurt.
09:27But Jack Conklin was a pretty good right tackle when he was healthy.
09:31Wyatt Teller went to the Pro Bowl a couple of times.
09:33Wyatt was a beast.
09:34I don't know what happened last year.
09:36Ethan Posick, when healthy, was pretty good at center.
09:39I don't know that the three guys that they've brought in are better than those guys.
09:45But they're certainly healthier.
09:47And, Andy, that's essential.
09:50And they spent a lot of money for guys who were a little bit more available.
09:53It feels like a very blue-collar offensive line group they brought in.
09:57Right?
09:58Nothing flashy.
10:00Guys are going to go out.
10:01They're going to fill the positions.
10:02If it doesn't work, they're going to replace them.
10:05It just seems very churnable, how does that sound?
10:11That they could churn this offensive line very quickly.
10:14One thing I do like, and Scott mentioned it when he was with us,
10:19and we've talked about it last week,
10:21I like the versatility of some of the guys.
10:26And versatility doesn't necessarily mean, like, utility player.
10:30You know, as I've mentioned, Bruce Matthews was terrific.
10:33And he's in the Hall of Fame, and he played everywhere on the offensive line.
10:37If you can play on the offensive line and can move a spot or two, it helps you.
10:43It just seems like Andrew Barry collected some offensive linemen,
10:47and then they'll figure it out later.
10:49And that's okay.
10:50You know, that really is.
10:52I honestly think that's okay.
10:54And then you figure out, all right, which guy is best at center?
10:58Is Whipler better?
11:00Is he okay?
11:01Is Jenkins healthy and good to go?
11:03All right, we're going to put Elton at center then.
11:05Who knows?
11:06Somebody I know who pays attention to the Green Bay Packers
11:09doesn't like the idea of Elton Jenkins at center.
11:12He's a great guard.
11:14There you go.
11:15He's a great guard.
11:16Center, he needs some work.
11:17Which is why the versatility might come in really handy,
11:21because he could end up at right guard.
11:24Yeah.
11:24From talking with a couple of relatives up in Green Bay who have way too much time on their hands
11:29now that they're retired, they would not play him at center.
11:33But guard, on the other hand, is a different conversation.
11:35Which is where Whipler could be your center,
11:37and then you have two new guards if Joel doesn't come back,
11:40and Zion Johnson and Elton Jenkins.
11:42You put Titus Howard, who we're going to hear from later in the show at right tackle,
11:46and you draft your left tackle, and you're good to go.
11:50As long as those guys can do the job.
