00:00Hey, it's 822, and of course, he's brought to you by Shive and Jewelers, Cleveland's premier jewelry store.
00:05And he joins us. Hello, Daryl.
00:08Hello, boys.
00:08Was free agency a win for Shador Sanders and or Deshaun Watson?
00:14Um, yeah, I mean, a little bit.
00:18I mean, I wouldn't sit there and say that, like, Andrew Barry knocked it out of the park or anything.
00:22But, um, I mean, Barry addressed what needed to be addressed.
00:29That's the offensive line.
00:31And, um, you know, he brought in some versatile players.
00:35So, uh, hopefully that helps either one of those guys, whoever ends up being the starting quarterback.
00:41Well, we were just talking about the fact that, hey, it wasn't Kyler Murray.
00:44It wasn't Malik Willis, uh, any of the names that we had bandied about.
00:50And we thought, well, that's, that's huge for Shador because, yeah, he's still going to have to compete for the
00:56starting job.
00:56I don't, I don't think at any point Todd Munkin's just gift wrapping him the job.
01:00He's going to have to demonstrate that he understands the offense, knows the offense, and, you know, has, has paced
01:07himself, outpaced anybody else who's in that quarterback room.
01:10But with that said, the fact that, you know, Kyler Murray's just more talented than him.
01:14And I don't think he beats him in that.
01:17Malik Willis, if there's a significant investment in Malik Willis, well, then he's going to be the starter.
01:22In that case, I think it's a big win for Shador.
01:24Yeah, I mean, you know, the, the versatility, um, uh, stands out to me, uh, clearly that was something Andrew
01:34Barry wanted to address.
01:36The offensive line has had to deal with, uh, a multitude of injuries, uh, in recent years.
01:42They've had to do a lot of shuffling with the lineups.
01:45Uh, and, and so, uh, Barry brought in guys that can play in multiple positions up front and, and be
01:52moved around, uh, with relative ease.
01:55So, I, I guess from that standpoint, um, you know, that, that's a little bit of a win, uh, to,
02:01to give, uh, Todd Munkin, um, and, uh, the, the offensive coaching staffs some versatility, uh, up front with the
02:09line.
02:10But, um, you know, uh, how that ultimately is going to, you know, work out in the favor of Shador
02:17or, or to Sean, I, I think remains to be seen.
02:21Um, you know, I think that the win for Shador, you know, this off season is going to come with
02:28him really, uh, diving into this new playbook, this new offensive system that, uh, Munkin's going to install, uh, and,
02:37and get, getting himself ready for what,
02:39you know, you know, will be, uh, uh, a pretty competitive, uh, competition.
02:44Darrell Ryder joining us here on the show.
02:46What, what did free agency do to change, if anything, to change the draft plans for the Browns, do you
02:51think?
02:52I don't think it changed anything, Ken.
02:54I think it's, I think it teed it up.
02:56Um, and it kind of went the way I thought.
02:59They made it, they're, they're, you know, splashes came via the trade, uh, into signings.
03:05And by splash, I mean, you know, spending a nice chunk of money, uh, on players.
03:12Um, you know, I have been saying from day one that I thought that, uh, you know, offensive line, more
03:20specifically, left tackle, as well as wide receiver,
03:23were the two positions they should, uh, or need to address in free agency.
03:29Or I should say in the draft, in the first round, with six and 24.
03:33And, uh, based on what Barry has done to this point, nothing has, uh, changed my thinking.
03:40And in fact, well, the one position that needs filled on the offensive line still, left tackle.
03:45That tells me that that's what they're going to be looking for in the first round of the draft.
03:48Not to say that they still can't sign somebody, but I really think that they're going to use one of
03:53the picks there.
03:54And then again, they didn't really, uh, they haven't addressed anything in the wide receiver room.
03:59That is a room that absolutely needs an infusion of talent.
04:03Again, still time to trade or sign somebody there.
04:06But I feel like they're going to bring in a young wide receiver, another young wide receiver.
04:11Uh, because, you know, again, where they are roster building, salary cap wise, et cetera.
04:18Uh, I, I think Andrew Barry wants to, uh, you know, get a little younger.
04:22And then also too, uh, in getting younger, you have, uh, a little more salary control there.
04:29Darrell, are you ready to guarantee that that offensive line is going to be much better this year?
04:35No. I mean, on paper, it looks really, really good as far as what Andrew Barry did.
04:40Really good.
04:41Yeah. I mean, look, I mean, um, do I think that the Browns are a significantly better football team today
04:50than they were last year?
04:52No, not really.
04:54But, uh, there were holes that needed to be filled.
04:58And I think Andrew Barry did a good job filling those holes.
05:02Can I tell you, I'm a little bit, uh, I don't know how you guys will talk about this tomorrow
05:06night at 7 p.m.
05:07on the offseason special.
05:09But, uh, I wish they didn't need to make so many changes on that offensive line so suddenly.
05:14Because I really like a lot of the offensive linemen in this draft.
05:17So that part kind of, I don't mean to bogger down there.
05:20I know that a lot of people are really excited about the, you know, some of the names that I
05:25could probably pull out there.
05:26But either way, you know, it's all cause and effect.
05:29I can understand that.
05:30But, uh, where do you think, when it comes to wide receiver, is it a number six?
05:34Is it a number 24 thing with you?
05:35Where is it?
05:36Um, I am kind of torn on that.
05:42Um, I would, uh, I keep going back to, uh, the Braylon Edwards pick.
05:52And, and what Phil Savage said about that at the time.
05:56And both of those are needs.
06:01And, you know, if the better player at 6 is the receiver, then you take the receiver, in my view.
06:09Because you need the talent.
06:11Uh, if the better player happens to be the left tackle at 6, then you do that.
06:16But then there's, you know, we've had the conversation about, you know, could they go defense at 6?
06:23If, if that's the best player available.
06:25The good news for Andrew Barry is, I, I think he has tremendous flexibility in the draft.
06:32He, it, it feels like he's painted into a corner because of the needs.
06:37But I don't think he's painted into a corner.
06:39He has five of the top 110 picks in this draft.
06:45Last year, he was in a similar position.
06:47He nailed his picks, right?
06:49He got four starters, uh, uh, out of that.
06:53And then we'll, you know, see what happens with, uh, you know, Shador Sanders.
06:57Um, you know, uh, but he got four starters out of last year's draft, which is tremendous.
07:04And if he can duplicate that, and obviously that's asking a lot.
07:08But if you can get three starters out of those five picks, you've done really, really well for yourself.
07:14So I think that Andrew Barry is set up very well, uh, with this draft.
07:20And even if he wants to maneuver up and down the board a little bit, uh, which it wouldn't
07:25surprise me if they moved down from six, uh, to give him an extra pick or two to play with.
07:32Uh, do we owe any kind of an apology to Jed Wills now that more information has come out
07:38about just how intense his injury really was?
07:42Um, I mean, certainly, you, you, you, you feel bad and you, you understand, uh, all, you know,
07:48all that he went through, um, rehab is really taxing.
07:52Um, and he had to do a lot of that when he was in Cleveland between the ankle and the
07:57knee injuries
07:58and whatnot, they have to wait a minute.
08:00I'm sorry, Daryl.
08:01I hate to jump in.
08:02Why does he, why does anybody need to apologize?
08:05Yeah, I, I, I'm not saying that.
08:07No, I know.
08:07I'm saying, I'm sorry.
08:08Lima.
08:09I'm looking at Lima.
08:09You can't see me.
08:10I'm looking at Lima going, what, what type, what type of question is that?
08:13Why would Daryl or me or anybody need to apologize?
08:15Did Daryl say anything that was over the line?
08:17I know fans have certainly been vicious about Jed and wondering about his rehab and what
08:22was taken so long.
08:24And obviously now we know, we know why he's been out of football.
08:27I don't think they were.
08:28I think it was out of sight, out of mind, to be honest with you, Daryl.
08:31Right.
08:32Yeah.
08:32Yeah.
08:32I, I don't think folks really miss Jed all that much last season.
08:37Uh, not necessarily that they were missing him.
08:39They just, at many times we're wondering just how hardworking he was behind the scenes dealing
08:45with injuries to get back on the football.
08:47They might've done that before.
08:48Now we know it was pretty significant.
08:49They might've done that rookie year.
08:51There was some rumblings about it.
08:52Remember, Daryl, I get, no, Daryl reported it and then I gave him hell.
08:58And then it ended up being that there were people wondering that.
09:00So I had to apologize to Daryl.
09:02If anybody need to apologize, I apologize to Daryl.
09:05But there was nothing after that.
09:07It's sports watching culture.
09:08If fans like you, then they'll make excuses for your injuries.
09:11And if they don't like you, uh, they will go the other way.
09:15That's normal.
09:15But they, are they going to apologize for that?
09:17And they will go out of their way not to apologize.
09:19No, but there's, I don't.
09:20Seems like something personal.
09:22Well, I don't know.
09:22I didn't mark down anything that was said about the guy that was so nasty personally or anything
09:26like that.
09:26I didn't see anything.
09:27You didn't like the way he wore his jersey.
09:29I know that.
09:30I said he had long sleeves and that it tends to rub people the wrong way.
09:34But an offensive lineman, I didn't say a damn word about his jewelry.
09:38They like it when the quarterback wears chains.
09:40They don't like it when the offensive lineman wears or is very, quote, blinged out.
09:45All right.
09:46We're going to talk about that here in just a damn second.
09:48Let's get back to the nature at hand.
09:49Go ahead, Daryl.
09:50I'm sorry.
09:50No, I mean, it's...
09:51That's an eye on Lima.
09:54Listen, the selection didn't work out for the Browns.
09:57The frustrating thing there is Tristan Wirfs, who was taken behind him, did work out.
10:02That was Andrew Barry's first pick.
10:04That's why there were so many, or I should say so much attention paid to it and the results
10:09from that pick.
10:11It was unfortunate that he dealt with as many injuries that he dealt with in his time with
10:17the Browns.
10:18Even when he was healthy, though, you saw the talent.
10:21But I don't know that you got the premium effort at all times from Jed.
10:29And there were questions about just him, you know, really being into football.
10:34Did he really enjoy playing or was it just, you know, he was showing up and going to work
10:40every day?
10:41I think it was good for him that he took last year off to really rehab his body, get himself
10:47right.
10:48And, you know, we'll see what he's able to do in Chicago with the Bears.
10:53But, you know, I certainly can't sit here and bemoan the fact that Andrew Barry did not
10:59extend him because I just, you know, based on the body of work, based on the health history
11:04and whatnot, I think that that would have been a little irresponsible.
11:08You know, we've spent way too much time on Jed Wills, Daryl.
11:11I apologize to you.
11:13Do you think that I should be panicking more about the Cavs or should I be?
11:18Panic's a strong word.
11:19Should I be more concerned about the Cavs, Daryl?
11:21Well, Donovan Mitchell didn't want to use that word yesterday.
11:24But I got to tell you, they play some games where you just scratch your head.
11:30Yesterday was one of them.
11:31Like James Harden was awful.
11:33You know, Max Drew's coming back, and he was great, and you'd think that that would
11:38have given them some life and some energy against just an awful Dallas Mavericks team
11:44who, I don't even know if they're trying to win, and you had the boots put to you.
11:51And there are just times this team looks like they have a better chance of being a first-round
11:56exit than they do an NBA Finals contender.
11:59You know, and we keep hearing about working it out, and Donovan said after the game that,
12:06you know, hey, everything was all, you know, smiles early on after the trades because they
12:11won five, six games in a row or whatever, and now they're going through some tough times.
12:16They're still not at full strength.
12:18You know, Jared Allen is not back yet.
12:20And they dealt with injuries all season long, but man, that just was an ugly game yesterday.
12:28It was a sloppy game, and we've seen that this year from this Cavs team where they have losses
12:35that just make you shake your head.
12:38And, you know, whatever's going on, they're running out of time to get it together.
12:44They got, you know, 14, 15 games left on the schedule.
12:48That's not a lot of time, a little over a month before the playoffs begin, but, you know,
12:53they got to get it together or else, you know, folks are going to be sitting here bemoaning
12:58the fact they got booted from the playoffs much earlier than they were supposed to be.
13:03Daryl, I'm filling out my bracket.
13:05How many times can I fill out a bracket before I finish the bracket?
13:09Because I have a bracket where I'm like, I wrote a team down, and I'm going,
13:13I don't think that team's going to the Final Four.
13:14What the hell am I doing here?
13:15I don't know what I'm doing.
13:17Uh, you, you, well, I, I, I mean, I know what I'm doing, but I, I really don't, but I,
13:22I want to know whether or not I can, I can erase this and go back.
13:27I'd say, uh, give me your sheet.
13:29I'm going to have to fill out yours.
13:30This thing's gone to hell.
13:31I got Purdue going to the Final Four.
13:32I'm like, what are you thinking?
13:33No, what are you doing?
13:34No, no.
13:35I'd probably say three strikes and you're out.
13:37You get, you get three cracks at it.
13:39All right.
13:39I think that's fair.
13:40I, I, I, I, I've, I've been there.
13:42I'll probably be there when I sit down and fill out my bracket, but yeah, I'd probably
13:46say three cracks at it.
13:48I like the rest of it though.
13:49It's a, I mean, I do like, do you feel like, do you fill out your national championship,
13:53your, or I should say your national champion, your final four and, and work your way back
13:57or do you start from the field of 68?
14:01I've done that a few times.
14:03Yeah.
14:04I, I, I'll, I will pick my final four and then I will pick my, my national champion from
14:11there.
14:12Then I, you know, I make sure I go back.
14:15Okay.
14:16Make sure that I got all my final four advanced into the final four.
14:19And then I, I go back to the beginning and then work my way forward.
14:23It's bizarre, but you know, Hey, it it's, it's worked for me on occasion.
14:28Fine.
14:29Thank you very much for your time.
14:31All the best to you and yours.
14:32I might do it that way here.
14:34I, I, I really hope Lima is able to, to square up the whole Jed Wills jersey thing.
14:38Yeah, I'm bothered by that.
14:40No, he's just, he's just starting fights.
14:42Daryl, thank you for the time.
14:43We'll talk to you later this week.
14:43You bet, guys.
14:44Have a good week.
14:45Daryl is in with me on Thursday and Friday this week.
14:48The dangerous one, Daryl Ryder.
14:50He's brought to you by...
14:50Shive and Jewelers, Cleveland's premier jewelry.
