11 March - National afternoon weather forecast presented by Annie Shuttleworth.
Transcript
00:00Good afternoon. It was a bit of a windy start to the day across the far north but actually
00:05this afternoon is looking relatively bright for most of us. Still quite breezy. This is
00:10the satellite picture from this morning. You can see the rain band clearing the south and
00:14east and curling round back into the north-west as well. That's all wrapped around an area
00:20of low pressure up to the north of the UK. We've got a ridge of slightly higher pressure
00:24moving in for this afternoon at least for a time. It's not only been windy, it's also
00:29been quite wet actually across the far north and west. Some very heavy showers piled in
00:33across the far north of Scotland. There was some hail and thunder in there as well this
00:38morning. Those showers will continue across many western areas of Scotland into parts of
00:42Northern Ireland, more southern areas of Scotland. A risk of showers here. Elsewhere though across
00:47much of England and Wales. It should be a dry day once that rain clears the far south-east
00:52this morning. Plenty of sunshine out there. It is relatively breezy though. Highs of around
00:5713 degrees in the south-east where we get the best of the sheltered sunshine. Further
01:01west 10 or 11 degrees and cooler than that across the far north. Now those showers continue
01:07into this evening across the far north and west of Scotland becoming heavier into the
01:12night. Further south it should remain largely dry but we start to see more cloud moving in
01:17and some of that cloud could be thick enough to bring some outbreaks of rain across the high ground
01:21and coastal areas in the western parts of the country. The south-east seeing clearer skies for
01:28the longest. But with all that cloud moving in we've got strong south-westerly winds as well. It's
01:33going to be quite a mild start to the day on Thursday. Temperatures around seven or eight degrees
01:37to start which is quite mild for the time of year. But Thursday will be a windy and a pretty
01:43wet day
01:44for many of us. This band of rain will slowly sink southwards but we also get further rain pushing up
01:51from the south and west. When we see the front push through you can see a real narrow band of
01:56strong gusty winds that will make for tricky travelling conditions. There is a wind warning
02:00out for much of northern England and southern Scotland as well as northern Ireland. Gusts of 50 to 60
02:06possibly more than that in exposed areas are expected so there's likely to be some travel
02:11disruption through Thursday across northern areas. Further south a breezy day, a risk of rain but
02:17we're not expecting too much disruption from the weather. We've got pretty mild air with us
02:22into tomorrow. Highs of 14 or 15 degrees across particularly central areas. The Midlands seeing
02:29these highs elsewhere 12 or 13 and once this band clears through it will turn much colder across the far
02:36north. That cold air sinking southwards into Thursday night and that will allow many of these
02:42showers pushing in from the north and west to fall as snow through Thursday to increasingly lower levels
02:49as we head towards Friday. We've got pretty cold air for the time of year spreading across the country
02:54into Friday bringing a cold feel, a frosty start for some of us but also a risk of hail and
02:59snow showers
03:00across the far north. It does remain pretty chilly into the weekend too but if you want more details
03:05on your forecast for further ahead or why not check out our latest 10-day trend later on today. Bye
03:11-bye.
