00:00If they didn't get Tua, if they didn't get Malik,
00:02if they didn't get Kyler Murray, that those were the guys.
00:05I'm trying to think of even who else that you would bring in
00:08and say instant starter.
00:10Geno Smith may be still on that list.
00:12Help me.
00:13Tell me somebody you think that's still out there.
00:15If we're talking strictly free agents, I think it's Geno Smith is potentially.
00:20But I think if you bring in Geno, it's probably he's going to be part
00:25of the competition, and then he maybe has a leg up
00:28because he's the vet of the group.
00:29That you maybe trust more than Deshaun Watson,
00:32but I think he's part of the competition.
00:34The only other one is Kyler.
00:36If they go sign Kyler Murray, that to me is he's our starter.
00:42It does smell like he's going to Minnesota, though.
00:44It does feel that way, and that's the other thing that's important here, too,
00:47is Kyler is going to get to play in the vet minimum
00:50and can basically choose wherever he wants to go.
00:53He's not going to choose Cleveland and sort of rot for a year.
00:56He's going to go somewhere where he can compete for a championship
00:59and have the most success and then get a big payday on the other side
01:02from some new team.
01:03So I think Minnesota makes a lot of sense, especially with Kevin O'Connell's
01:11resume of turning these quarterbacks or reviving quarterbacks
01:15with what he did with Sam Darnold I think certainly speaks for itself.
01:18So, yeah, but I also think there's maybe trade options out there.
01:22That's what we're not talking about, about them being able to go out
01:24and try to trade somebody.
01:25Maybe you give up two first-round picks for β but I still β
01:28what quarterback β what team's giving up a quarterback that's a franchise
01:31for two first-round picks?
01:33There's two that come to mind.
01:33The first is if Mac Jones is available.
01:36I know the morning show talked about this a little bit.
01:38I don't know that he is.
01:40It sounds like the 49ers have played hardball with trying to move on from him
01:46and said they enjoy having them there, and I get it because Brock Purdy
01:49has been hurt the last couple years where they maybe value having somebody
01:53that they feel is capable of running their offense, that they've seen do it,
01:57and there's just some stability that's provided with that
01:59because he's still under contract.
02:00But maybe you could talk him into it if you float a high enough pick.
02:05There's always a price, right?
02:06Right.
02:07The other one is Anthony Richardson, which β here's the thing.
02:12I am not the biggest believer in Anthony Richardson at this point.
02:16Hang on, we have to stop.
02:17I'm tired.
02:19And then I'll come back.
02:20Okay, now go ahead.
02:21I'll try.
02:22I'm not the biggest Anthony Richardson supporter in general.
02:26I didn't really love him coming out of college because everyone was just banking
02:30on the potential of the traits that he has.
02:32But if we were talking about Malik Willis as an option because of the elite
02:35athleticism and the strong arm, those are the things he has.
02:37And then he sounds like a guy that would be good for Todd Monk.
02:39Yeah, and that's what I mean.
02:40And it's a one-year commitment.
02:42It's the last year of his rookie deal because no one's picking up the fifth-year option.
02:45You owe him like $5 million this year.
02:48So to throw his hat in the ring in a quarterback competition,
02:52I think that could make some sense.
02:54If we're talking about trying to find a quarterback,
02:56those are the only ones that really feel like they make any sense in any way,
02:59shape, or form, at least in the free agency part of it.
03:00Kirk Cousins?
03:03Maybe, but he fit more with what Kevin Stefanski wanted to do here, I think,
03:06than Todd Munkin.
03:07I totally agree.
03:08I mean, listen, he's a good veteran to have in your room if you want him.
03:12But it goes back to the question, who would you sign to a Malik, Kyler, whatever,
03:18that you would think is your starting quarterback for the future?
03:22And I don't think that person exists other than someone who's currently
03:26someone's starting quarterback and a team is just ready to turn away from it.
03:30And then you have to ask yourself, why does that team want to turn away from that guy?
03:34And is that really worth giving up two first-round picks or a first-round pick for?
03:37I think the only one, like I said, the ones that I named off are the only ones
03:40that I think are even in the conversation for being potentially your starter.
03:45It's maybe Geno, Kyler, I think without question,
03:49would be your starting quarterback if you're bringing him in.
03:51Anthony Richardson is a maybe where you add him to potentially compete for it,
03:56and maybe you think he can win it.
03:58And I think if you trade whatever the 49ers are going to ask for for Mac Jones,
04:02I think you're probably making him your starter at that point if you trade for him.
04:04Those are the only four.
04:05If you add Jameis Winston, I think you bring Jameis Winston in and it's like,
04:09hey, he's our backup.
04:10He's another veteran in this room.
04:12He's worked with Tom Munkin before, so there's that.
04:14Yeah, but you got Deshaun here.
04:16Why would you do that?
04:17That's why this quarterback situation is so weird.
04:20Yeah, I kind of feel like this is where we are.
04:22It's Shadour's β I think they're probably going to try to see if Deshaun can do this.
04:28If Deshaun can do this, I would not hesitate to start him.
04:31I think β everyone wants a lot β get mad at me when I say this, but return on investment,
04:35they invested a lot of money in him, and if they feel like they can even just squeeze
04:38a little bit of blood out of that rock, they're going to do it,
04:42especially if they think he's better than Shadour.
04:44So case in point on that.
04:46Next point on that, though, is, you know, I think you're looking at it and saying,
04:51okay, Shadour, here's your chance.
04:53Go win it.
04:53And if you don't, your other quarterback option is 20-27.
04:56That's it.
04:57Yeah.
04:57I kind of β the room does not feel like it's very expandable.
05:02You're going to bring in somebody, they're just β if you bring in another veteran,
05:06you're going to knock Gabriel out and, you know, one of those guys.
05:10They're not walking into the season with four quarterbacks.
05:12Remember that big thing last year?
05:13No.
05:13Four quarterbacks to start the season.
05:14No way.
05:15Now, they will carry four in the offseason, and that's the big question.
05:17Is it going to be add somebody now or add somebody in the draft,
05:22and those are your four, and then you trade.
05:24So you're talking about three β
05:25And then Dylan Gabriel is the one that gets pushed out after training camp.
05:28You have three quarterbacks with, you know, a season or less experience.
05:32Well, and that β again, this is the weirdest quarterback situation
05:36I think I've ever seen in my life because, yeah, you have Deshaun Watson,
05:39and that's theoretically your veteran backup, quote-unquote,
05:44wish it were starting, and there's tangible reasons
05:47why I want Shador to be the guy that starts.
05:49Like, if you're telling me it's Deshaun or Shador, I'm 100% Shador
05:52because we've seen what we need to see from Deshaun Watson.
05:55There's more to learn about Shador Sanders.
05:57I'd rather see Shador Sanders.
05:58If I'm Todd Munkin, I'm handing the ball to Deshaun
06:02because I feel like I want to go with a guy that at least β
06:06and I know his track record is not good over the last couple years,
06:09but someone who's been out there before and done it.
06:12And if you think Munkin is a bridge head coach,
06:16which I've never heard before, I don't think Munkin is,
06:20but I do think if you're asking for the best opportunity to win,
06:24if Deshaun Watson is healthy and can play like the Deshaun Watson
06:28they thought they were getting, I don't know how you would pick him
06:31over any other quarterback.
06:31But that's the question, right?
06:32Can he play like he β and that's my reasoning for why I have no desire to see him.
06:37I've seen what I need to see.
06:39The Deshaun from 2020 that was a top five quarterback was, what, six years ago,
06:45two ruptured Achilles, a shoulder injury.
06:49And a purchase and a paratry.
06:50Yeah, exactly.
06:52A go β I have no belief.
06:55And here's the thing, though.
06:56I've talked about this with Earl on Saturdays.
06:58There's a world where they go out and they throw the balls out of practice
07:02and Deshaun looks like the best quarterback at practice.
07:05And so, to your point, Baskin, he may win the job
07:08because he looks like the best quarterback at practice.
07:10And it's the same conversation we had last year.
07:12You can't lie to his teammates.
07:15If he looks like the best guy at practice, you kind of have to start him.
07:18But do I think β
07:19You can't trade him.
07:20You can't cut him.
07:21You've got to wait another year.
07:22But do I think that's going to equate to the success in the field?
07:25No, because I've seen what it looks like when you're on a game day Sunday
07:28and he's playing the way he's playing.
07:30I would just much rather β if this year is only about β
07:34and I know they can't look at it this way.
07:35But if this year ends up kind of being an exploratory venture
07:40where you're trying to sort of set the stage for what next year is going to bring,
07:43I'd rather learn about the young quarterback that showed some potential last year
07:46than go back to the retread who you've tried time and time again
07:51and there's just nothing left to learn about it and it's time to move on.
07:54So I'd rather it be set up that way.
07:56But, again, I still think they're adding somebody to this room.
07:59It's just a matter of who.
08:00And then who's gone.
08:01Who's the outside?
08:02And it feels today like it's Gabriel.
08:04Yeah, and if they draft somebody, I feel like it has to be Gabriel.
08:07Because how β you're really going to go into the season with, like you said,
08:09three guys who have less than two years of experience?
08:12Well, then maybe you're trading Shadour.
08:14And I don't know what the value is.
08:16And you're keeping Dylan?
08:17I'm just saying.
08:19Because I don't think you want β I don't think you want Shadour around
08:23if he's not going to play.
08:24You understand what I'm saying on that?
08:25And Shadour's going to probably want to β I would want to leave if I was Shadour.
08:29Because I would think, well, I want the opportunity to try to play.
08:31I want to play.
08:32Now that he's here β I mean, we all know about the whole β
08:34he didn't want to go to Baltimore last year to sit behind somebody.
08:36Right.
08:36But now that he worked his way up to the point where he started,
08:39yeah, I could understand where he'd be probably frustrated
08:41if he wasn't close to starting or starting.
08:44I just don't know what you would get.
08:45I also don't know what you would get for Gabriel.
08:47You might actually β today, you might be able to get him through to the practice squad.
08:51If you trade β
08:51Do you think somebody's picking him up?
08:53That's not a bad thought.
08:54Yeah, I know exactly who's picking him up.
08:56Kevin Stefanski.
08:56Oh, that's true.
08:57Kevin probably would, yeah.
08:58Good point.
08:58I didn't think about that.
09:00Maybe just to put him on his practice squad.
09:01No matter what, even if you're β
09:04I don't necessarily think they're going to trade Shadour.
09:06But if they were to try, you're going to β
09:09somebody's getting moved out of this group.
09:11It's not going to be Deshaun because they can't.
09:14And of the two guys that we're talking about here, if it's Dylan,
09:18they're going to have to β
09:19it's going to be an admission that they wasted a third-round pick.
09:22Like, that's just going to be what it is.
09:23If you get a six-round pick back, you'll take it and whatever.
09:26You're going to have to concede that you either wasted a third-round pick
09:28or a fifth-round pick if you actually end up trading one of these guys.
