00:00The Afternoon Show has Albert Breer on their show frequently.
00:04Albert, earlier this week, in a different area,
00:08was asked about the quarterback situation for the Browns.
00:12And he had a long, extensive answer on this.
00:15And, you know, here we sit, and it's still, as Dan Lobby,
00:19the best line I've read in a year or so, said,
00:22it's still looking like the competition that they keep threatening us with
00:27should do or against Deshaun Watson.
00:30We'll see what more to come.
00:32But here's what Breer said to the Afternoon guys, Nick and Jonathan,
00:36about the quarterback situation here, as it stands right now.
00:40If we ask you right now, what percentage chance would you give
00:44Shador to start Week 1 for the Browns?
00:46What percentage point are you setting?
00:4830, maybe?
00:50Still think Deshaun's going to get a shot.
00:52I look at all the money they've sunk into it.
00:55There's a reason why Deshaun, at one point,
00:58was the 12th overall pick in the draft.
01:00There's a reason why Deshaun was once or twice the highest-paid player
01:04in all of football.
01:06There is so much.
01:07I think it's likely that Deshaun gets up back up to the level he was
01:11at the end in Houston.
01:12No.
01:13But, I mean, I think even if he got 80% of the way there,
01:17that would be a higher level than a lot of teams perceive the ceiling
01:20for Shador Sanders.
01:22I just look at it, and I think to myself,
01:26if I've already sunk all that money into Deshaun Watson,
01:30I can't get out of that money for this year.
01:33He's still relatively young for his position.
01:36Don't I owe it to myself to make sure he's not the answer
01:40before I let him go off somewhere else next year,
01:43especially when I have a new coaching staff that doesn't have the skeletons
01:48in the closet with him that Stavansky and then that staff had.
01:53Like, what weighed that staff down with him, I think,
01:56was the history of going through the trade together and everything else.
02:00Like, you have none of that now.
02:01There's a chance to kind of get a fresh set of eyes on him.
02:04There's a chance to get a fresh perspective on him.
02:07There's a chance to let him compete for a job.
02:10I've seen Deshaun Watson play at a high level too much to not think that
02:14maybe he could get to a middle-of-the-pack quarterback level.
02:18And I don't know that we've seen that Shadour can do that.
02:20And I might wind up being totally wrong on that.
02:23But I think logically, if I'm the Browns,
02:26and this is going to be a transition year anyway,
02:30unless Shadour really shows me a lot more than he showed me last year,
02:34I'm probably looking at this like,
02:37I want to make totally sure that we got wrong on Deshaun Watson
02:40before the contract expires.
02:43Boom!
02:43That was Albert Breer on the afternoon show with Nick Wilson and Jonathan Peterlin.
02:48That was the ROI argument.
02:53Return on investment?
02:54Yes.
02:55That's what I've been saying for years.
02:58It's interesting to hear Albert say exactly what I've been saying.
03:03Since last year when people were so mad at me,
03:05they were like, oh my God, Andy, you're crazy.
03:07Deshaun Watson's never going to have a chance to play again.
03:10He's done.
03:11He's had his last snap.
03:13We'll never see him again.
03:15Really?
03:17I'm going to tweak your thought on that if you don't mind.
03:20Sure.
03:21To me, it's not a return on financial investment.
03:26It's a return on, and I agree with what Albert said in this regard.
03:31Are you sure you don't want to see if there's something left?
03:36And it's not from a financial standpoint as much to me, Andy,
03:39as it is from a football standpoint.
03:41At one point, he was a dang good quarterback.
03:45Yeah.
03:47Now, should the Browns have picked him up at the time, Andy, if you'll recall?
03:53We both said no.
03:54I don't think their plans were.
03:55I think if Baker would have said, okay, I understand what you're doing.
03:58I get it.
03:59But let's, I mean, I'm still looking for my fifth year.
04:02Baker would have been back.
04:03Well, they were looking to get Deshaun, and then when Deshaun said the Browns
04:07were out, then, you know, everybody got their panties in a bunch,
04:11and it got all bad.
04:12So, that is, I, I, that word, I don't know why it gives me the creeps.
04:18Well, there you go.
04:21Anyhow, at one point, the guy was a phenomenal quarterback.
04:25He was very good.
04:27No question about it.
04:30Do you want to let him walk out the door and not know for sure?
04:35And are you convinced that Shadour would be better than, than Deshaun?
04:40If Deshaun's healthy.
04:42A 30% chance.
04:4330%.
04:44If, if Deshaun is healthy, I, I agree with, with Breer.
04:49I would say it's about a 30% chance, you know, company, open competition, new set of eyes
04:55on him with a coaching staff who has no ties to him.
04:59You can be sure Todd Munkin wasn't told when he took the job, interviewed for the job.
05:04Hey, you got to play Deshaun Watson.
05:07And I would think you got to be sure that he was not told you got to play Shadour Sanders.
05:12And I'm probably pretty sure that he was told that there'd be a free agent or another quarterback
05:17in this loop.
05:18Because he said it.
05:19Yeah.
05:20He re, he reiterated what Andrew Barry said.
05:24You just heard.
05:25I just, are Browns fans ready to hear that Deshaun Watson might be the starting quarterback?
05:29Well, you just heard Albert Breer say, why would you not make sure and take a look?
05:35And, and imagine if he played well next year, Andy, and then he's a free agent.
05:40Oh my God.
05:42What do you think folks?
05:43You could sign up to a new deal.
05:44Well, you could, but would you want to?
05:47But you just heard Breer.
05:48I think the 30% chance for Shadour that left 70% open for somebody else, whether it be Deshaun
05:56or somebody else.
05:57We just heard Albert Breer.
05:59Wow.
06:00Mention to the afternoon guys.
06:02He thinks there's about a 30% chance that Shadour Sanders starts a quarterback next year.
06:0730%.
06:0830%.
06:09First of all, do you think that's low or high?
06:11I think that is low.
06:14I agree with you.
06:14I think it's closer to 40% to 45%.
06:16I'd say it's 50%.
06:18I don't think it's a gimme.
06:20I think it's less than 50%.
06:21I think it's 40% to 45%.
06:23And I will stick with my original premise that Deshaun Watson is likely to be the starting
06:30quarterback at the beginning of the season, barring health issues.
06:33I would agree with you.
06:34And for a couple of reasons.
06:36Number one, I can't see Deshaun Watson as a backup quarterback on this team.
06:43I, I, the idea that if he's healthy and standing on the sideline, watching Shadour play quarterback,
06:50I, I can't wrap my head around that.
06:52So I'm assuming he's going to be healthy.
06:54And that means he's going to start Mary Kay Cabot, who covers the Browns for the plane
06:58deal of Cleveland.com is on our show every Tuesday at 11 o'clock.
07:01She was on with the morning guys today and she was asked the same type of thing, a little
07:07percentage about Shadour starting at quarterback.
07:09What is the percent chance that Shadour Sanders starts this season week one as the quarterback
07:15of the Browns?
07:16You know, right now I would probably put it at, I guess I would put it at 60%.
07:21Uh, because if I look at...
07:23Whoa, not bad.
07:25We had a guest on the...
07:27Twice as high as Albert Breer.
07:29Yeah, I was going to name names, but he'll go ahead and name names.
07:31He'll go ahead and name names.
07:32You're twice as high as Albert Breer goes Mary Kay Cabot.
07:37Wasn't that little fanfare yours, Dan?
07:39That's stolen?
07:40It's all shared.
07:41Oh, okay.
07:41I don't care.
07:42All right, fine.
07:44That's fine.
07:44So she doubles it up.
07:46She still is not overwhelming in that Shadour is going to start.
07:49She went 60%.
07:52Regardless, Andy, it screams right now competition.
07:55And to me, it screams if Sean's healthy, he's going to be the guy.
07:58And I do think if Shadour was a starting quarterback,
08:01they would just come out and say it.
08:03I think they'd be 100%.
08:05Hey, we like what we saw out of Shadour last year.
08:08Do you think you can do that with Sean still here?
08:10No.
08:12You know what I hope, though?
08:13But, I mean, if you wanted to control the narrative,
08:16then you would say yes.
08:17If they don't add any other quarterbacks to this group,
08:21ideal scenario to me would be this.
08:24They go to training camp, there's a competition,
08:26and Shadour flat out beats out Deshaun Watson
08:30and looks like the better quarterback.
08:33How will we know that?
08:34Won't we know that from preseason games?
08:36Oh, I don't.
08:37I bet we know that before they even play a preseason game.
08:41Todd Munkin knows quarterbacks, so they keep telling us.
08:45I thought Kevin did, too.
08:47Well, I think Kevin did, too.
08:48I think Kevin was told, you know,
08:50hey, you traded for Deshaun Watson,
08:52you think you're going to play him?
08:53Yep.
08:56They didn't start Shadour until Dylan got hurt.
08:59Jeff, I can only coach the players they give me.
09:01Yeah, I know.
09:02That's, you know, I don't blame Kevin for that.
09:05They saddled Kevin with those guys.
09:06And that's why we'll have our eyes on Atlanta all season long.
09:11And they've saddled Todd Munkin with those guys,
09:13but I'll bet he doesn't have any marching orders.
09:16And that's why, ideally, the guy who's cheap.
09:20You really think he has no marching orders?
09:22I don't.
09:23When it comes to the quarterback, I think not.
09:25I think the one thing they want to avoid
09:27is not giving Shadour a fair opportunity to win the job
09:32a fair opportunity.
09:33Worst case scenario.
09:35You think they want to avoid that?
09:37No, they want to.
09:39They want to make sure they do.
09:40They want to make sure they do.
09:41And they don't, because they don't want the program.
09:42And ideally, Andy, wouldn't it be best for the team?
09:46Wouldn't it be best if he comes into camp, is great,
09:50and strictly football beats out Deshaun Watson?
09:55He's cheaper?
09:55You're saying that he's not walking around
09:57with his own film crew everywhere he goes?
09:59I don't care if he has a film crew as long as he plays well.
10:02Well, I'm just saying, get to the facility.
10:04Get your work done.
10:05Be a quarterback.
10:06Excel on the field.
10:08Then go worry about your other stuff.
10:09But wouldn't it be better if he beats out Deshaun?
10:12He's cheaper.
10:13He's under contract.
10:15He's long-term.
10:16You'd be able to add to other parts of the team
10:19knowing you have a quarterback on a cheap deal?
10:23Yes.
10:24Ideally, that's the perfect scenario.
10:26What if they – I'd still keep the – keep your mind open for them
10:31to draft a quarterback.
10:32I don't know where, but –
10:34Which just adds to the mess.
10:36Uh-huh.
10:37Doesn't it?
10:38The mess is drafting two quarterbacks in one draft,
10:41and then not one in the first round and one somewhere else.
10:45When you draft a third and a fifth rounder,
10:47you are just asking for the trouble that we saw last year
10:51and that you will have this conflict.
10:54I hope for Gabriel's sake they trade him
10:57or figure out somewhere else for him to restart.
11:02He didn't sound like he did.
11:03He got hurt here.
11:04That's why they stopped starting him.
11:05Right?
11:06Yeah.
11:07You know, who knows what the storyline is, Andy,
11:11if Dylan didn't get a concussion?
11:14You know?
11:15Yeah.
11:16Could have been a very different world.
