A shocking incident has been reported from Bijhara village under Pipraich area in Gorakhpur, where a woman allegedly killed her three-year-old stepdaughter with an axe late Tuesday night (24 Feb 2026).

According to police, the accused, Pooja (35), allegedly threw the sleeping child, Aditi, to the ground and then attacked her neck with an axe, killing her on the spot. Blood reportedly splattered across the room, staining the walls.

The child’s father, Triveni Maurya (40), said he had stepped outside to urinate when the incident occurred. “When I returned, I saw my daughter lying in blood. I screamed. I could not believe someone could do this to such a small child,” he said.

On seeing him, the accused allegedly attempted to flee. Triveni chased her, shouting for help. Villagers joined the pursuit and caught her nearly one kilometre away. Her hands and feet were tied with a rope before she was handed over to police.

When questioned by locals, the woman allegedly stated that her husband loved his daughter more and she wanted to “teach him a lesson.”

Triveni had married Laxmi in 2012, and the couple had Aditi. After Laxmi’s death two years ago, he married Pooja about a month ago. The three had been living together in the village house.

On receiving information, Pipraich station in-charge Atul Kumar Srivastava reached the spot with a police team. The accused was arrested, and the axe used in the crime was recovered on her indication. The child’s body has been sent for postmortem examination.

Police said further investigation is underway and strict legal action will be taken against the accused.
