A man in Kerala has been arrested for allegedly murdering his wife in front of their eight-month-old child in Ponnani, triggering shock and a detailed police investigation.

The accused, identified as Mohammad, allegedly killed his 22-year-old wife Fathima on Wednesday and dumped her body near the Ponnani harbour area.

According to police, the couple had gone to the harbour along with their infant when an argument broke out. During the dispute, Mohammad allegedly strangled Fathima to death in the presence of the child.

Officials said the accused remained at the spot for nearly an hour before dumping the body near the beachside close to the harbour and returning home. He later handed over the child to his mother and left the house.

The body was discovered by local residents, who alerted the police. Since both the victim and the accused were natives of Ponnani, identification was carried out quickly.

When police found that Mohammad had fled, a search operation was launched. He was later traced near Parappanangadi.

During interrogation, the accused reportedly confessed to the crime, stating that he suspected his wife of being involved in another relationship.

Mohammad was arrested, produced before a court, and remanded to judicial custody. Further investigation is underway.
