11 February - National Afternoon Forecast presented by Annie Shuttleworth
Transcript
00:00Hello, good afternoon. Welcome to your latest update. A dry interlude to come for many southern areas, but some persistent
00:07rain continuing across the north.
00:09There will be another dry interlude through this weekend, as well as a ridge of high pressure is waiting in
00:15the wings in the Atlantic to bring a day of sunshine, just one day only on Saturday for Valentine's Day.
00:22Now, before then, there is more low pressure systems to move in from the Atlantic, bringing more rain, particularly to
00:28northern areas through this afternoon.
00:29Northern Ireland, much of Scotland and northern England have seen some pretty wet weather through today.
00:35Some rain warnings in forceful eastern and southwestern areas of Scotland.
00:39That's where the ground is well saturated. There's a risk of longer journeys and some localised flooding, too.
00:44Across parts of Wales, though, the Midlands, down across many southern areas of England, there will be a drier spell
00:49of weather to come this afternoon.
00:51Still some sunshine around, but mainly sort of cloudy and dry, a risk of the odd shower here and there,
00:57but definitely drier than it has been lately.
00:58And it's pretty mild, actually, across the south still. Different story, though, for the north.
01:03We're starting to see some quite cold air moving in. That'll become more dominant as we head towards the end
01:08of this week.
01:09So the rain is starting to fall as snow over the high ground of Scotland above around 300 metres here.
01:14We won't see it accumulating too much at lower levels just yet, but the rain does sink southwards, bringing some
01:20drier weather to the far north of Scotland to start the day on Thursday.
01:24And the wet weather will push across the south as well overnight tonight.
01:28So quite a lot of cloud around on Thursday morning, a pretty murky start to the day and a chillier
01:33start to the day as well, wherever you are.
01:35Still relatively mild, though, by day across the south on Thursday.
01:40Now, another wet day, a cloudy day on Thursday, but not quite as wet as it has been.
01:45The rain is going to fall in slightly different areas.
01:47That area of rain sinking southwards into more southern areas of Scotland, north-western England and northern Ireland, seeing the
01:53bulk of the rain.
01:53It's quite light, drizzly rain, but it will fall as snow over the highest ground across the Pennines.
01:59Across the far south-west, some glimmers of sunshine, quite a brisk westerly wind here.
02:03And across the north and east, a cold wind on Thursday afternoon.
02:08Temperatures down in the low single figures, and it will feel chillier than that on Thursday.
02:12And that colder feel becomes more dominant by the end of this week.
02:17We've got a greater risk of ice and snow, as well as frost, as we head towards Friday.
02:22So we do have a number of warnings in force for Thursday evening into Friday for snow and ice for
02:28parts of Scotland as well as northern England.
02:30We could see snow settling above 200 metres, around 10 centimetres.
02:34But there's also a risk of icy surfaces.
02:36We've had a lot of rain recently.
02:37As temperatures dip below zero, there's a risk of ice on any untreated roads, as well as pavements, which will
02:43bring longer journeys.
02:45So please check out more details on those warnings on our website and app.
02:50But otherwise, have a lovely afternoon, and I'll see you again soon.
02:53Bye-bye.
