00:00Storm Chandra is here. It's already brought some very wet and some wintry weather, but it's the strong winds now that we're most concerned about,
00:08particularly across eastern Northern Ireland, an ample warning in force for much of the day.
00:12Looking at the earlier satellite imagery, we can see the centre of the low pressure that is Chandra, just to the south of the Republic of Ireland.
00:20It is pushing its way northwards up the western side, and it's bringing a lot of unsettled weather.
00:26Yes, the very strong winds, plenty of heavy rain and some snow mixed in with that as well.
00:31Overnight and through much of Monday, we saw 100 millimetres recorded in some parts of Devon.
00:37No wonder there's been some substantial flooding in places.
00:40That band of rain is now pushing its way north and eastwards across much of northern and eastern England and across much of Scotland as well.
00:47And with cold air here, no wonder we're seeing some significant snow building up over higher ground.
00:52We're talking 10 to 20 centimetres of snow, perhaps, in some places through today.
00:57More showery bursts of rain coming in from the southwest.
01:00So whilst there will be some drier, brighter spells, there will also be some further wet weather.
01:05There could be some thunder mixed in with those bursts of rain as well.
01:09But it's those strong winds we need to watch out for.
01:11I'll talk about those in a second.
01:13Looking at temperatures, and well, it's a little bit below average across northern parts.
01:18Highs of around 5 or 6 Celsius and feeling unpleasant with the strong winds, the wet, the wintry weather.
01:23Meanwhile, towards the southwest, temperatures around or a touch above normal.
01:27Highs of around 10 or 11, perhaps.
01:29But it is still going to be blustery, so that will make it feel a little bit colder than those temperatures suggest.
01:34Let's look at the warnings that we have out as we go through this afternoon.
01:37So a wind warning in the southwest, that's going to expire around 4 o'clock.
01:41So the strongest winds easing as we go through this afternoon.
01:45Meanwhile, rain and wind across the whole of Northern Ireland.
01:48Also a wind warning for southwestern parts of Scotland.
01:52Rain and snow across parts of Scotland and also northern England.
01:55Like I said, 10 to 20 centimetres building up over higher ground.
01:58But it's this amber wind warning.
02:00Eastern parts of Northern Ireland seeing gusts of 70, 75 miles per hour.
02:05And because of the direction of the winds with the area of low pressure just to the west of Ireland,
02:10we're seeing those winds coming in from the southeast.
02:12And so that's a slightly unusual direction, which is why impacts will be a little bit greater
02:17than you might otherwise expect, even though these winds are very strong.
02:22As we go overnight, we are going to see more showery bursts of rain coming in from the southwest.
02:26A lot of the wet weather across Northern Ireland clears away.
02:29And then we have some swathes of wet weather continuing across the northeastern parts of Scotland.
02:34Elsewhere, though, some drier, clearer weather around.
02:37And where we get those clearer skies, we are going to see temperatures dropping.
02:41Could see quite a few spots getting close to, if not below freezing, away from the towns and cities.
02:45Quite widely seeing temperatures dipping below freezing.
02:48And with some very wet ground, all that rain that's come through in the last 24 hours or so,
02:54the ground is going to be so very saturated.
02:56And then as temperatures get to sub-zero, well, ice is going to be quite a problem through tomorrow morning.
03:01That's going to lead to some difficult travelling conditions for sure.
03:04Then as we go through tomorrow itself, actually a quieter day for many places.
03:09A lot of dry, bright weather here and there.
03:11A few bursts of rain coming through at times, but nothing on the same scale as what we're seeing through today.
03:17We're noting across parts of northeastern Scotland, it is going to stay wet through much of the day.
03:21That rain is continuing, so staying grey, cloudy and damp.
03:25Elsewhere, there will be some drier breaks in between.
03:27And actually, a large chunk of central UK staying dry through much of the day.
03:32And some sunshine at times as well.
03:34Temperatures in the north will be a couple of degrees up on today.
03:38And with less unsettled weather around, feeling a little bit more pleasant perhaps.
03:42Further south, similar, maybe even a touch down on today, but still around average for the time of year.
03:49As we go through the end of the week, there is more unsettled weather to come.
03:53It's worth bearing in mind the heavy rain might not be as heavy as what we have seen through the last 24 hours or so.
03:59But with it likely to affect parts in the southwest in particular, that is likely to lead to some further issues with ongoing flood risk as we go through Thursday night and into Friday in particular.
04:11Also, with colder air perhaps digging into some northern parts, a greater chance of more hill snow as we go through Thursday and Friday as well.
04:19We will, of course, be keeping up to date with all of that.
04:22There will be plenty more warnings as we go through this week.
