12 January - National Afternoon Forecast presented by Alex Burkill
Transcript
00:00Hello, very good day to you. Yes, there's some wet, there's some windy weather around as we go through today,
00:05but I think one thing many of us will really notice is just how much milder it is compared to what we saw through much of last week.
00:13Starting off looking at the bigger picture, and there's an area of low pressure to the north of the UK.
00:17It's this that's bringing the strong winds across northern parts through today,
00:20but it's also the position of the low allowing for our air to be coming in from the southwest,
00:25which means that those temperatures are markedly higher than they have been recently.
00:30Going through the details, and yes, it's windy, like I said, across parts of northern Scotland.
00:34Gales may be even a little bit stronger than that across some parts.
00:37And there is some wet weather around outbreaks of rain pushing across parts of Northern Ireland into western Scotland,
00:42a few outbreaks of rain across some parts of England and Wales as well.
00:46But in between those, there will also be some brighter, sunnier breaks.
00:49And as I said at the start, temperatures are a fair few degrees higher than we've seen through recent days,
00:54just about staying in single figures across many northern areas,
00:58maybe getting close to double digits in a few spots,
01:01but more widely getting into those double figures across central and southern parts.
01:06Highs of 12, maybe even 13 Celsius, which is a little bit above average for the time of year.
01:12Later on, as we go through this evening, we are going to see more rain spreading across parts of Northern Ireland,
01:17central southern Scotland, some parts of northern England and north Wales as well.
01:21Across central southern England, largely dry, clear start to the night,
01:25but perhaps a bit more cloud, some low cloud developing as we go through the early hours,
01:30and could be some mist patches as well.
01:33Also across parts of northern Scotland, clearer skies here, allowing temperatures to drop,
01:37so there's going to be some frost, some ice in places.
01:40We do have a warning out for ice because that could cause some problems,
01:43particularly on the roads.
01:44Watch out for slippy surfaces.
01:46And there's the potential for some fog patches to develop as well here.
01:49Now, like I said, a cold picture across parts of Scotland, particularly towards the north,
01:54temperatures getting below freezing in some places.
01:57Meanwhile, a fair bit milder towards the south,
02:00not really dropping a huge amount from the daytime highs,
02:03some places staying around 8, 9 Celsius,
02:05a real change to what we saw through much of last week.
02:08Then as we go into Tuesday, well, we do have a front that's pushing its way in across parts of Northern Ireland
02:14and Scotland. That's edging its way southeastwards.
02:17But it's also this wavy feature towards the southwest of us,
02:20which I wanted to draw your attention to.
02:22That's going to spread in as we go through into Tuesday morning.
02:26And so we're going to see rain initially across southern counties,
02:29but then feeding north and eastwards across the, well,
02:33southeastern half of England, really,
02:35bringing some outbreaks of rain, which could be a little bit heavy.
02:38And then that's going to merge with that front that I mentioned across Northern Ireland and Scotland
02:42that's pushing its way southeastwards through the day.
02:44And so there's going to be a fair amount of rain for a fair few places.
02:48It doesn't look especially heavy for most of us,
02:50but could be some heavier bursts across parts of the southeast in particular.
02:54Behind that front, across parts of the northwest,
02:56there'll be some showers coming in across Scotland and Northern Ireland,
03:00some of these falling as a bit of sleetal snow over higher ground of Scotland,
03:03because whilst there will also be some brighter, sunnier weather,
03:06there's cooler air coming in.
03:08And so temperatures across the northwest of the UK will be down a few degrees compared to today.
03:13Meanwhile, towards the south-southeast, they're going to be similar,
03:16obviously a bit less pleasant or more unpleasant, really,
03:19with the cloud and the outbreaks of rain coming through,
03:22less sunshine by the afternoon compared to today here.
03:26Then as we go later on this week, well,
03:28the unsettled and generally milder than of late theme continues.
03:33So there will be some further wet weather around.
03:35Perhaps actually Wednesday looks mostly dry for a fair few places,
03:38particularly to start off with, albeit quite chilly, quite cold to start off with.
03:42But generally, the milder theme looks set to continue.
03:45And then watch out for Thursday.
03:47It's not a guarantee by any means,
03:50but there's the potential for a deep area of low pressure to come through.
03:53So we could see some very wet, some very windy weather again.
03:56But we will obviously be updating you on that as we get nearer the time.
03:59And for a more in-depth look at what we can expect through this week,
04:03well, why don't you check out the week ahead forecast,
04:05which Annie will be bringing to you this afternoon.
04:07Bye-bye.
