16 December - National Afternoon Forecast presented by Alex Burkill
Transcript
00:00Hello. Through the rest of today, things are looking a bit quieter for many than we've seen of later,
00:05and so the weather's offering a bit of a respite to some of that saturated ground.
00:11That being said, we do have some rain across eastern parts of England at the moment.
00:15There is a front here that is going to gradually clear away towards the east as we go later on,
00:20and then a few showers across northern western parts of Scotland,
00:23and some of these could be a bit of a wintry mix, perhaps some sleet, some snow over the highest ground.
00:28Most places, though, like I said, having a quiet day, lots of fine weather around,
00:32lots of sunshine as well, actually, across many parts of Scotland, northern England,
00:36into the Midlands, Wales, southwest England, and also much of Northern Ireland.
00:40A bit cloudier across eastern and central, southern, southeastern parts of England,
00:45with that front lingering here, so yes, a fair bit more cloud here, as well as a few outbreaks of rain.
00:51Now, temperatures for many are going to be a little bit above average for the time of year.
00:55Here in the south, we're going to see them peaking in the low double figures,
00:59but most places, mid to high single figures, so in the sunshine, not feeling too bad,
01:05especially considering it is the middle of December.
01:08Then, as we go into this evening, still more showers across parts of Scotland for a little while yet.
01:13The rain in the east does, like I said, it would eventually clear away,
01:17and then we have some drier, clearer weather for a time,
01:20and with that drier, clearer weather, we are likely to see some fog developing.
01:24But then, as we go through the night,
01:26the next talking point is this weather system that's coming in from the west.
01:30So it's going to approach as we go through the rest of today,
01:33and then gradually spill its way eastwards,
01:36initially across Northern Ireland,
01:38but eventually reaching far western parts of Scotland, England, and Wales,
01:42as we head towards dawn on Wednesday.
01:44Now, this will do a couple of things.
01:45Yes, it will bring some rain, but it's also going to bring cloudier skies and strengthening winds.
01:51As a result, whilst we are likely to see some fog developing through the start of the night,
01:55and in the east, that fog is going to continue and linger and could be quite dense,
01:59could cause some problems.
02:00A warning has been issued because there's likely to be some travel disruption on Wednesday morning.
02:05Further west, that fog is likely to lift and clear away as this front pushes its way in.
02:11Now, ahead of that front, temperatures are going to take a little bit of a drop,
02:14getting close to, if not a little bit below freezing in some prone rural spots.
02:18So a bit of frost around for some of us.
02:21Further west, after a chillier start to the night,
02:24temperatures will start to pick up with that wet and that windy weather that's going to sweep its way in.
02:29So through tomorrow then, a fine, albeit perhaps foggy, start for some central and eastern parts,
02:35but staying largely dry across the east through much of the day.
02:38A different story elsewhere as rain spills its way in,
02:42and some of that rain is going to be quite heavy, particularly across parts of the southwest.
02:45South Wales, parts of Dartmoor, for example, could see some significant rainfall totals building up,
02:51maybe 40 to 60 millimetres, so enough to cause some further flooding
02:54and enough to cause some travel disruption as well.
02:57Elsewhere, the rain could be a bit heavy at times, but less likely to cause the impacts.
03:01That being said, the ground is very saturated in many spots.
03:05Temperatures look fairly similar to today across the south.
03:09Again, we're looking at temperatures peaking in the low teens, that kind of thing.
03:14Further north, temperatures, if anything, are going to be a fair few degrees higher than on Tuesday.
03:19But with less sunshine on offer, more cloud, more rain, stronger winds,
03:24if anything, it's going to feel a little bit less pleasant for sure.
03:27Then, as we go through the rest of Wednesday and into Thursday, there's more wet weather to come.
03:34There's a spell of rain that's going to come in from the southwest as we go through Thursday,
03:38so that looks like an even wetter day for many places.
03:41More warnings issued as a result of that because the ground, like I say, very saturated,
03:46so some further ongoing issues.
03:48And then Friday, a drier end to the week for many places,
03:51and so that's going to be welcome news to places which have seen so much rain
03:56through recent days, through recent weeks.
03:58Now, if you want more information about how our rainfall levels are looking,
04:02well, why don't you check out our deep dive, which Annie will be bringing to you later on.
04:06Bye-bye.
