00:00DC would like to state that no braineese or insects were harmed in the making of this program,
00:04and that none of the training you're about to see be attempted unless under expert supervision.
00:09Eight braineese, one challenge.
00:12To use complex mass of 100 billion cells we call Brain for chance to win Brain Jutsu Black Brain Belt.
00:20This is Brain Jutsu.
00:22Born in Lancashire, trained in Japan, with mind as sharp as Samurai's sword, he is Brain Master.
00:35He is the Sensei.
00:37Konnichiwa, and welcome to Brain Jutsu.
00:42Mental training specially designed to boost brain power and focus.
00:47My trainees, or braineese, have been following a basic program of training in the comfort of their own home.
00:54A brain-boosting routine of exercise, sleep, and enough fruit and veg to stock a greengrocer's.
01:02I found the training really fun, it was really enjoyable, I did it like a lot, but I'm quite nervous at the moment.
01:08I did all the training and, well, it was really easy.
01:12I'm really confident that I'm going to do well today.
01:14I really want that black belt, and I will claim it at the end.
01:19Now, my braineese must put their training into practice by testing a part of the brain we use every day.
01:26Level one.
01:27No, no, vault!
01:30Take a look at all these chocolates.
01:32Mmm, yummy.
01:33But how many white rabbits are there?
01:36If you got six, then congratulations.
01:40You've just used your occipital lobes.
01:43This area, the seeing part of our brain, allows us to recognise and separate images from each other.
01:50The seven braineese who use their occipital lobes the best will be allowed to enter my brain jitsu dojo, where their training will continue.
01:58The one who fails will be left outside.
02:01Oh!
02:02Feel the burn.
02:04Enter the dojo!
02:06Our braineese must answer four questions by studying the different shapes and numbers on the board in front of them.
02:15Get the questions right, and they'll be left with a four-digit code, which they must then use to unlock a piece of brain and secure their place in the dojo.
02:22But with only seven pieces of brain and eight braineese, one of either Hannah, Tajani, Ritika, Sean, Leonie, Michael, Tamara or Jonathan, will be left outside uneliminated.
02:36A bang of the gong reveals the four questions.
02:43How many green stars are there?
02:51How many black numbers are there?
03:00How many orange number fives are there?
03:03How many shapes do not have numbers?
03:17The cord our braineese are looking for is 1865.
03:27First off his stool is Sean, with Hannah not far behind.
03:30Do they have the cord, or have they gone too soon?
03:35Faster than you can say deep-fried dumplings, the rest of our braineese join them.
03:39All except Tajani, who's having to wait his turn.
03:45But Sean's not found that cord, and he's having to return for another look.
03:51Tajani gets his chance.
03:54And his lock springs open at the first attempt.
04:00Everyone else, meanwhile, has had to return for second helpings.
04:06A quick reminder that the cord our braineese are searching for is 1865,
04:11as there's one green star, eight black numbers, six orange number fives, and five shapes without numbers.
04:19Which means that Sean still hasn't found the right cord.
04:27Hannah is next to unlock a piece of brain, with Jonathan hot on her heels.
04:32But the rest of our braineese are still struggling.
04:35Come on, braineese, work those occipital lobes.
04:37With three more braineese safely through, it's now a straight fight between Leone and Sean for the last place in the dojo.
04:57Sean's up again, as he found the cord this time.
05:01Suffering sumos, he's still not got it.
05:04And this time, Leone's lock pops open, which means she's in and Sean is out.
05:18While seven have proven themselves worthy of entering the dojo and continuing their brain training,
05:23for Sean, it's the end of the road.
05:25I think the problem was because I was trying to read really quickly and I just read something wrong and I got the wrong number.
05:33I just feel gutted.
05:36So, with six levels to go, it's time for Tijani, Hannah, Jonathan, Tamara, Ritika, Michael and Leone to receive their yellow brain belts.
05:47The person I think is the one to beat is Tijani because, well, he did it so fast and almost straight away he got it.
05:54I think that I've got where it takes to get the black belt.
05:57I may have come last, but this time I'll nail it and I'll get the black belt.
06:01In this next level of training, things are going to get really hard.
06:12Level two, orange belt.
06:16We do things every day without even thinking about it, like throwing a ball.
06:21The next time you're with your mates, try throwing it with the arm you wouldn't normally use.
06:25Yeah, a lot more difficult, isn't it?
06:28If you manage to do that, you're using part of your brain that deals with problem solving, the frontal lobes.
06:35And that's what level two is all about.
06:38Taking something you normally do without thinking and doing it differently.
06:43Work it!
06:44To prepare them for using their frontal lobes in the next challenge, my brainees are going to need some training.
06:50Room of mental nourishment.
06:52This is the room of mental nourishment, where our young hopefuls will train their brains between every task.
07:03The more seriously they take their training, the better prepared they'll be for the challenges that lie ahead.
07:09And in level two, that challenge is all about getting their brains to think in a new way.
07:15Brain training. Take it in turns to call out the action on your cards.
07:19Everyone has to do the opposite.
07:20It looks like our brainey's home training has paid off.
07:29Touch nose with left hand.
07:33Spin around clockwise.
07:39Touch right here.
07:40Power!
07:41Hang on, though. Michael's getting as mixed up as a bowl of noodles.
07:47Time for a tip.
07:49Don't rush. Pause for two seconds to think before you react.
07:53Top tip, Hannah.
07:54You see, spending a moment to think before rushing in really can improve your focus and help you to perform better.
08:01Right knee up.
08:02Opposites, Michael.
08:05I don't understand this game.
08:07Oh, dear, oh, dear.
08:08I got a few wrong about two because at the beginning when we started the game, I wasn't paying attention to the instructions.
08:15Yeah, I'll definitely use the tip in the other rounds because it makes you think before you say or do anything.
08:19So, can Michael become unmuddled in time for the next task?
08:25Will Hannah remember to stop and think when the heat is on?
08:29It's time to find out as our seven braineys now put their frontal lobe training to the test.
08:35Guardian of the dojo and task adjudicator the she-han will now demonstrate the level two challenge.
08:41Inside seven boxes is hidden item, five of which match with item on shopping list.
08:52Braineys must take in turns to reach into each box and guess what inside, not by looking, but by feeling.
09:00If they think that item matches with one on list, they must try to remember number of box it is in.
09:06Once braineys have felt all seven boxes, then have 15 seconds to identify which box they are in.
09:16Braineys with least number of correct answer will be eliminated from dojo.
09:23My brainey tip for this task is to focus on just the items on the list and mentally tick them off as they feel each box.
09:32Work those frontal lobes.
09:33Our braineys wait nervously for the gong.
09:37If you want to know what they don't, here's what's on their shopping list today.
09:42In blue box number two we have jelly.
09:46In yellow box number six, an apple.
09:50Green box three hides crisps.
09:54Pickled onions are in red box seven.
09:57And in orange box number five, a pair of socks.
10:00But there are also two distractions for our braineys.
10:03In pink box number one are maggots, and in purple box four, some bandages.
10:09And if all that wasn't enough to make our braineys think differently, you'll have noticed we've also jumbled the box numbers.
10:15Three, two, one, it's go on the gong.
10:21Braineys have just five seconds to identify each item before moving on to the next box.
10:26Unable to see, the challenge is to use their training to think in a new way.
10:31Their hands must become their eyes, as they focus solely on their sense of touch.
10:36Confident Jonathan dives into those maggots, he looks calm, but will he now remember to rule out box number one?
10:46Tijani's found the jelly, but can he remember that it's in box number two?
10:51Tamara's not too sure about those pickled onions.
10:54Go on, Tamara, they won't bite you.
10:58Are Michael's frontal lobes helping him to identify what's in this box as crisps?
11:03Leone's also found those maggots, and unlike Jonathan, she don't look too happy.
11:11Will Hannah confuse the bandages in box four with the socks in number five?
11:18And can Ritika remember the location of the apple?
11:23That's all seven boxes.
11:26Our braineys now have 15 seconds to work out their answers.
11:30Here's that list again.
11:33And here are the box numbers.
11:43So, who's remembered their training and got their brains to think in a new way?
11:50Tijani matched two items with the correct box.
11:53Hannah matched all five items.
11:55As did confident Jonathan.
11:59And Tamara.
12:02Ritika matched three items.
12:04The same score as Michael.
12:07While Leone, like Tijani, matched just the two.
12:12Which means we've got ourselves a tie-break.
12:14Leone and Tijani will get one chance to prove the power of their mind and save themselves.
12:20It all hangs on the tie-break chopstick challenge.
12:27It's tough, but fair.
12:29Our braineys must use their occipital lobes, the seeing part of their brain, and work out how many chopsticks they see.
12:35They have just five seconds to write down their answers.
12:39If they lose focus and panic, it'll be all over.
12:42Time to reveal our braineys' answers.
12:44Spooky kabuki, the actual number is 51.
12:56Which means Tijani was exactly right.
12:59And although Leone went close, she must now leave the dojo.
13:09Walk of eternal regret.
13:12I think it went wrong for me because I was really scared and I was really nervous about what I'd be touching and what I'd be in there.
13:21Just really glad that I actually got through the first level.
13:24So with five levels to go, it's Tijani, Hannah, Jonathan, Tamara, Ritika and Michael, who go on to get their orange brain belts.
13:36I'm really shocked because I thought that she was going to get the right answer, but I got the right answer, 51.
13:43When I put my hand in the maggots, it wasn't very nice and I thought it was straw, but then I realised it was maggots because it caught up my arm.
13:50I was really relieved when I got through because I really need to go to the loo.
13:53Who's the clever clogs and whose brain needs a lot more training?
14:08Mount Everest, what a beauty!
14:10Now these two geezers, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, was the first to climb it.
14:16In the ultimate test of mind over matter, not only did they conquer a blooming great mountain,
14:20but they also had to battle against snow, ice and temperatures that would freeze your permals off.
14:25Mount-tastic!
14:26Now these look like brave and extreme conditions of another kind, the Sahara Marathon Runners.
14:31They think nothing of legging it four and a half thousand miles across the Sahara Desert, in temperatures well over a hundred degrees.
14:37And it takes these jokers a hundred days just to reach the finish line.
14:41If they ever get there, I'm tired just thinking about it.
14:44Brainy, Hillary and Tenzing, not Sir Brainy, Sahara Runners.
14:50Brain Jitsu!
14:54Competition in Brain Jitsu Dojo hotting up!
14:56Only six Brainy now remain to battle it out under watchful eye of Sheehan.
15:02Tizhani!
15:03First secure place in Dojo.
15:06Tough Tamara!
15:08Hannah!
15:09I'm really happy that I came first.
15:11Ritika!
15:13Confident Jonathan!
15:14I'm really confident that I'm going to do well today.
15:16And Maiko!
15:17I was really relieved when I got through because I really needed to go to the loo.
15:22Challenge is about to get even tougher.
15:24Only two Brainy will make through to final test.
15:28Table of Supreme Focus.
15:30Where must move all with power of mind for chance to win Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt?
15:36Here's time for...
15:39Level 3.
15:40Weaselt!
15:41Now, we all like to chat, but did you know that using words to communicate is one of the main reasons why our brains have grown so incredibly powerful?
15:52And that having a conversation exercises both halves of the brain.
15:56Now, if all that's doing your head in, allow me to explain.
16:02Imagine you're on a movie set where each crew member is focusing on their own particular job.
16:08But the director, he has to be aware of what everyone's doing.
16:12It's the same with the brain.
16:15There's the left half, which deals with the details.
16:17And there's the right half, which looks at the overall picture.
16:21This next level of training strengthens my Brainy's focus by working one half of their brain under pressure.
16:28Hey, pump it up!
16:31Room of Mental Nourishment.
16:33It's our Brainy's second visit to the Room of Mental Nourishment, where once again they'll train in preparation for the next challenge,
16:42which, remember, is all about using the two halves of the brain to communicate.
16:49Get into two groups.
16:50One group describes the picture in front of them.
16:53The other group draws it.
16:54So, while the girls use the right side of their brain to explain how to draw their pig,
16:59the boys must use the left side of their brain to interpret the girls' instructions.
17:04Hannah gets the ball rolling.
17:06OK, go to the right line of three, and go up to D, and draw a small circle.
17:12And mirror it on the underside too.
17:17And before you know it, the boys' masterpiece is beginning to take shape.
17:22Draw a small circle.
17:24And it's not just Hannah's instructions the boys are finding helpful.
17:28And then go to the centre of four, to the centre of D, and draw a small circle again.
17:33But then, faster than you can say turkey teriyaki, the girls' communication skills desert them.
17:38Bottom to the line underneath D, then draw an arch to the right hand of three, to the bottom of F.
17:48Can you repeat that?
17:51Time for a training tip.
17:54Start with the overall shape, then add the details.
17:57Top advice, but I'd say that's what our brainies have been doing anyway.
18:03What this lot need to remember is to keep their instructions clear and precise.
18:07The right side of three.
18:09Time to add the finishing touches.
18:11And then from there, draw a swirl up to the halfway of F.
18:14I think I know what it is.
18:17What?
18:18It looks like a pig.
18:19Yeah.
18:20It looks like a pig.
18:20Nice one.
18:22Hey, well done, brainies.
18:24I think it's because of my good drawing.
18:26I thought it was better that if, like, when we work as a team, because when they ask questions and we answer them, they kind of get more of a picture of what we're trying to say.
18:34I think we did really good in this challenge, because we worked as a team.
18:39Each person had a different job.
18:41Yeah, we're like a well-functioning machine.
18:43Can helpful Hannah take her helpful communication skills into the dojo?
18:47And will Tajani function quite as well when the heat is on?
18:53It's time to find out as our six now put their communication training to the test.
19:01Punch through number two.
19:04This is test of communication skill.
19:06So, six brainies must first divide into teams of two by drawing chopsticks.
19:11Quickly as possible, teams must punch six bucket containing number that go to make some.
19:19Pairs must decide who is guider, who is puncher.
19:23Puncher is blindfold and relying on guider to help find bucket.
19:28When all six bucket punched, brainy stop clock by shouting, brain jitsu.
19:34Quicker they punch bucket, more time they have to pick up number and make some.
19:39When brainy happy with answer, hit the gong.
19:43First two team to work out correct answer, get green belt and advance to next level.
19:48One brainy from losing team will be eliminated.
19:52The key to success here is for the guider to use the right side of their brain
19:57to follow their teammates' progress and give them clear instructions.
20:01For their partner, it's vital they use the left side of their brain
20:06to focus on these instructions and nothing else.
20:11First to put their communication train into the test are Ritika and Tijani.
20:16Step forward.
20:17With Ritika calling the shots and Tijani under the blindfold...
20:22Punch.
20:23..the two get off to a decent start.
20:25Step forward.
20:27Punch.
20:28Step right.
20:31Punch.
20:35Punch again.
20:36But then quickly run into trouble as Ritika's radar goes haywire.
20:42Punch.
20:45Step a tiny bit forward more.
20:47Punch.
20:49Go left.
20:51Punch.
20:54Brain jitsu.
20:55That's one minute 37 seconds, not the quickest of times,
21:00and these two will have to wait to discover
21:02if it's bought them any extra time to find their numbers.
21:06Next up, our confident Jonathan and helpful Anna.
21:09Forward two.
21:12Right two.
21:14And Jonathan looks to have learnt from his training,
21:17using the right side of his brain to tell Anna exactly how many steps she should take.
21:21And punch.
21:23OK, forward one.
21:24Left one.
21:27Punch.
21:28Punch.
21:32Brain jitsu.
21:33The pair stop the clock in a knockout one minute four seconds.
21:39Go forward.
21:40Last up are tough Tamara and Michael.
21:43Punch.
21:45Go forward.
21:46As the taller of the two, it's Michael who's opted to do the punching.
21:50Punch.
21:52Punch.
21:52He even saw one or two of his jabs are landing wide in the match.
21:58Right a bit more.
22:00Punch.
22:02Go forward.
22:04Go right.
22:06Punch.
22:08Go left.
22:10Punch.
22:12Brain jitsu.
22:13The two stop the clock in one minute 27.
22:16Pretty good, but not as good as Jonathan and Hannah, who set off first to find their numbers.
22:27Here's what our braineys are looking for.
22:30See if you can work out the sum.
22:32Remember, the first two teams to work it out will go through to the next level.
22:36Swifter than samurais on skis, Jonathan and Hannah are first to bang their gong.
22:52But Ritika and Tijani are taking forever to solve their sum.
22:56At last they finish, but do the numbers add up.
23:0712 times 3 minus 30 equals 6.
23:10That looks good, but as the last to finish, Ritika and Tijani will be hoping that one of
23:15the other teams have tripped up.
23:17No problems though for Jonathan and Hannah.
23:21But what's this?
23:2230 minus 12 times 3 equals 6.
23:25I don't think so.
23:27Tamara and Michael haven't made their sum, which means it's they who'll be battling it
23:32out to avoid elimination in the...
23:35Stay off!
23:38With just one green belt up for grabs, both braineys must use all their powers of focus
23:43to fight the urge to blink.
23:45The first to falter will be eliminated.
24:00Ooh, and it's Michael who's first to drop his guard, which means tough Tamara stays in
24:06and Michael goes out.
24:07Walk of eternal regret.
24:16I think we didn't work properly because we rushed it too much.
24:20I think I mixed around two numbers and I couldn't concentrate properly.
24:25So with four levels to go, it's Tijani, Hannah, Jonathan, Tamara and Ritika who get green belts.
24:35When I found out I was in the stair-off, I was really, really upset, but now that I've
24:39won, I feel really good now.
24:41And when I came first, I felt really confident and I feel really good now and I really want
24:45to win.
24:45I think my biggest rival would have to be Hannah because she's doing just a little bit better
24:51than me.
24:55Brain Titu!
24:59Level four.
25:01Blue Vault!
25:01This fourth level requires our brain ease to master a primitive part of the brain
25:07called the amygdala, the area that responds to threat.
25:14Remember the last time you felt afraid or panicky?
25:18Maybe that time you were about to take a really crucial penalty.
25:22Well, that feeling was triggered by the old amygdala.
25:26Now, stress can make you lose focus.
25:29Fact. Which is why my braineys must train to keep their emotions under control.
25:37Room of Mental Nourishment
25:39We're back in the room of mental nourishment, and it's time for our five remaining green belt holders to overcome fear and stay focused.
25:49Form a circle. Pass the disgusting drink around the circle, only passing it on when you have said, a different animal.
25:57After one minute, the brainey holding the drink has to drink it.
26:01What's the drink?
26:02That, Hannah, is a glass of cod liver oil.
26:05I'll stop.
26:06It's B.
26:08Ardrock.
26:10Dolphin.
26:12Elephant.
26:14Shark.
26:15Round one, and our braineys are doing well.
26:18Crab.
26:19Shark.
26:20Until Ritika turns repeater.
26:23Hang on, I said shark.
26:25So you can't repeat it.
26:29Uh...
26:30What other animal is there?
26:33I'm not quite good.
26:34Okay, a fly.
26:36Fish.
26:37Lime.
26:39There's the gong, and it's Tiziani who's been left holding the cup of yuck.
26:43Drink, drink, drink.
26:44Come on.
26:45Drink it.
26:46Come on.
26:49Are you going to drink it?
26:50Yes, he is.
26:51Time for a training tip.
26:59Tip.
27:00Welcome the drink as your friend.
27:01It holds the answer.
27:03It holds the answer to what?
27:04I think it means, like, don't say, oh, that's just susking, I don't want to have that, and then panic.
27:09Kind of welcome it and think for a second or two, and then you'll get it.
27:15Spot on, Jonathan.
27:16You see, imagining the drink as something nice like a fruit smoothie will help you to stay calm.
27:22Being afraid of it will only mess up your focus.
27:24I'll go first.
27:26Zebra.
27:27Werewolf.
27:28Horse.
27:30Cow.
27:31Rat.
27:32Armed with that tip, our braineys are fairly rattling along, doing a great job of keeping their fear at bay.
27:38Um, uh...
27:40But hang on, confident Jonathan's had a complete mental block.
27:44Has he let his amygdala get the better of him?
27:51It's a costly mistake, because he'll now have to down the drink a stink.
27:57Aw.
27:59Aw.
28:00Aw.
28:00Nasty.
28:01It tasted horrible.
28:04It tasted like, um, you know, cod, but just horrible and raw, and as if it just had come out of the sea.
28:12Well, I think I paused a bit, because I couldn't think of any other animal.
28:16I know at school I'll always fail at animalology.
28:18So, will confident Jonathan be able to recover from his training setback?
28:24And will Tijani ever get over the taste of that cod liver oil?
28:28It's time to find out, as our five are challenged to overcome their fears once again.
28:35Creepy Crawly Word Grab.
28:37This level will test of mind over matter for braineese, and will push them to really overcome their fear.
28:45Underneath the creepy crawlies lie an assortment of letters worth different points.
28:49Braineese have just one minute to plunge hands into tank, and pick out up to seven letters each.
28:55They then have a further minute to make higher scoring words they can.
29:00To do well, my braineese must block out the signals coming from their amygdala, and ignore the creepy crawlies.
29:09The quicker they combat their fear, the more time they'll have to pick out the high-scoring letters.
29:23Underneath this pile of crickets are an extra five golden letters.
29:27If her braineese manage to use one in their word, they'll double their score.
29:33There's the gong.
29:34But while the others get stuck in, Ritika's definitely unhappy,
29:38flapping her arms about instead of searching for those letters.
29:44If she can't control her fear, she'll stand no chance.
29:49Meanwhile, Hannah looks as calm as a sumo in a pie-eating competition.
29:54Totally ignoring the signals coming from her amygdala.
30:08And the minute's up.
30:09Our braineese now have a further minute to make the highest scoring word they can from their letters.
30:14Tijani looks like he's made a word already.
30:21But will he regret not using all the time available?
30:24Oh dear, poor old Hannah's board looks like a vowel-free zone.
30:28How on earth she'll make a score from that lot, I do not know.
30:32See if you can make a word from the anagram on the screen now.
30:35There's the second gong.
30:45Over over and he's done.
30:48Boom.
30:50That's a terrific ten points for Tijani.
30:54No word.
30:56With only consonants to choose from, there's no score for helpful Hannah.
31:02Tors.
31:02Six points for confident Jonathan.
31:07Hits.
31:08With that golden T in her word, that's ten for tough Tamara.
31:13Mail.
31:14And that's six points for Ritika.
31:17And so, with no points to her name, it's helpful Hannah who must leave the dojo.
31:25Walk of eternal regret.
31:28I found the brain training quite useful because at first I didn't think I was going to be able
31:33to do the task, but then I did complete the task even though I didn't complete the word.
31:38The thing that I've learned from coming on Brain Jitsus is that I can overcome my fears
31:42and I'm really pleased about that.
31:45With three levels to go, those who use the craniums to conquer the crickets are jewellery
31:49rewarded with their blue belts.
31:51It was really disgusting.
31:54I was just blowing like, whoosh, and trying to move them out of the way, trying to get
31:59the letters.
32:00The tip really helped me, saying welcome them as your friend, so I just pretended to be
32:05one of the crickets myself and see how it feels for them.
32:08Who's the clever clogs and whose brain needs a lot more training?
32:24Queen Elizabeth I, what a lady.
32:26She ruled for a whopping 45 years, a glittering reign known as the Golden Age.
32:31Not only did the Queen use her tactical brain to send the Spanish Armada packing, but she
32:35also outwitted her rivals for the throne.
32:37High five, Lizzie.
32:39Now meet Ying Zheng, first emperor of China, a man obsessed with living forever.
32:44He sent our explorers to find a magic potion that would help him live for hundreds of years.
32:49But after taking the potion, he soon became ill and died.
32:52Always read the label.
32:53Brainy Queen Elizabeth I, not so brainy Ying Zheng.
32:59Brain Jitsu.
33:01Tension in Brain Jitsu Dojo mounting.
33:04Now, just four young hope remain to compete under watchful eye of Sheehan.
33:10Ritika, solid throughout.
33:12I just pretended to be one of the crickets myself and see how it feels for them.
33:16Tough Tamara.
33:18Confident Jonathan.
33:20And Tishani, winner of two levels so far.
33:23I think that I've got what it takes to get my black belt.
33:26Only two brainy will make it to final showdown.
33:29Table of Supreme Focus.
33:31Where must move ball with power of mind?
33:35Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt is within their grasp.
33:38Here's time for...
33:40Level five.
33:41Red Belt!
33:41Now, if you're learning how to ride a half-pipe on a BMX bike,
33:47then you might be interested to know that your new hobby is doing wonders for your old grey matter.
33:54Exercising both the thinking part of the brain, the cerebrum, and the doing part, the cerebellum.
34:00You see, doing new things increases the flow of blood into your head,
34:05which keeps your brain cells topped up with the oxygen they need to perform at their best.
34:10So, in level five, my brainees are going to be challenged to learn new skills.
34:16Now, you can speed up how quickly the brain takes in new stuff.
34:20And this is what our brainees are going to train for now.
34:24Game of Mental Nourishment.
34:27It's our brainees' fourth visit to the room of Mental Nourishment,
34:32where they'll be training their brains in how to learn new skills.
34:36Flip the bean bag from the top of your head to the back of your neck.
34:40What?
34:41I think it means like this.
34:46Well, kind of, but, hey, it's a start.
34:49And definitely an improvement on Ritika's effort.
34:52No, that's not it.
34:52Jonathan, too, is struggling to get the thinking and doing parts of his brain to work in harmony.
35:00Well done, son.
35:04But I think some of this lot could do with a training tip.
35:07Yeah, yeah, yeah.
35:10Have confidence.
35:11Compliment each other.
35:12That headband looks really nice.
35:14You've been coming first in every task so far.
35:17Your hair is really nice as well.
35:20Thanks.
35:21It might seem weird being told you're wonderful,
35:24but confidence really can help the brain to master new skills.
35:27Shishani, I really think you've got a good chance of winning this,
35:30because you're just really cool and you can do this.
35:33You did well slowly.
35:34Can I say a tip?
35:35Yes.
35:35Yes.
35:36If you do it slow and take your time,
35:39then it usually just falls,
35:40it slowly crawls down your neck and into it.
35:43Slow and steady wins the race.
35:45Well, she's right.
35:46I'd stick to complimenting one another.
35:48How are you, Ritika?
35:50I think the person with the best attitude would be Jonathan,
35:52because he always gets stuck into the task or any training we do.
35:56Um, I think that TJ's actually got the best attitude,
36:01because he's always getting stuck in with tasks
36:04and he's always thinking of good tips and stuff like that.
36:07So, can slow and steady Ritika move up a gear in time for the next task?
36:12And will Tajani's talent for tossing beanbags help him grab the red belt?
36:18Only time will tell as our four now put their latest brain training to the test.
36:23Quick, quick, don't drip.
36:28Brainy must use training to keep clear head and steady hand
36:32to carry water across obstacle course,
36:35spilling as little as possible.
36:37There is trampoline to glide over,
36:40seesaw to deal with,
36:41and stairs to climb.
36:44Although racing against clock,
36:46the more water Brainy's manage to keep in bowls,
36:49the more seconds they'll have knocked off their overall time.
36:52Brainy with slowest time will be eliminated.
36:57The tip for my Brainy's in this next task is to
37:00remain calm and think positive thoughts.
37:05Giving in to frustration will only lessen their focus and slow them up.
37:10As the she-hand fills the bowls,
37:12so the dojo starts to fill with tension.
37:14Which of our four Brainy's will best use their training
37:19to master this tricky new skill?
37:24Tajani is first to go.
37:27Ooh, but that's a lot of water gone already.
37:31He might be fast, but he's none too steady.
37:33A little more water lost at the end there,
37:48and there's the gong.
37:51So, how's Tajani done?
37:53Brainy's get a point for every unit of water saved,
37:56and further bonus points for speed,
37:58from three points for the quickest
38:00to none for the slowest.
38:02With 16 units of water left,
38:04that's 16 points for Tajani,
38:06but we'll have to wait to discover
38:08if he's picked up any bonus points for speed.
38:11Next up is confident Jonathan.
38:21With the thinking part and the doing part of his brain
38:24working in perfect harmony,
38:26Jonathan's literally racing round the course.
38:28Safely over the seesaw.
38:35And but for that lost water at the end there,
38:37that looks like a terrific round.
38:42That's 18 units of saved water,
38:45which means 18 points,
38:46plus a possible bonus for speed.
38:50It's now Tough Tamara's turn.
38:52Nice and steady so far.
39:06Tamara appears to have remembered her training,
39:08and she looks supremely confident.
39:11But again, with the end in sight,
39:13the steps strike.
39:15Even so, that's an impressive 20 points
39:23for Tough Tamara,
39:24and a good chance of a bonus.
39:27Last to go is Ritika.
39:29Will she remember her training and stay positive?
39:37Straight off, though,
39:38that's a lot of water lost.
39:40What's more, Ritika doesn't look that fast.
39:46Chop, chop, Ritika.
39:56Oh dear, some more water gone on the seesaw.
39:59But there's the finish line.
40:05With 17 points for those 17 units of water,
40:09Ritika will be hoping she's been fast enough
40:11to earn some bonus points.
40:13Let's find out.
40:16Finishing in just 38 seconds to Ziani
40:19was our second fastest brainy,
40:21bringing him two bonus points.
40:23Added to his 16 points for those 16 units of saved water,
40:27that's a final total of 18.
40:30Finishing in 37 seconds,
40:32Jonathan was the quickest brainy,
40:34earning him the maximum three bonus points
40:36and a grand total of 21.
40:39Tough Tamara picked up one bonus point for her time,
40:43giving her a total of 21 points as well.
40:47While Ritika, as the slowest brainy,
40:49picked up no bonus points,
40:51and so stays on 17.
40:54All of which means that it's Ritika who's eliminated
40:58and must now leave the dojo.
41:02Walk of eternal regret.
41:06I was going by the saying of slow and steady wins the race
41:09and that really let me down,
41:11so I don't think I'm going to listen to anyone ever again.
41:14I think that Jonathan's going to win
41:16because he has a lot of confidence
41:18and I think that confidence is the strongest point you need.
41:23With two levels to go,
41:25that leaves just to Ziani,
41:26Jonathan and Tamara
41:28to stand proud in red.
41:30Yeah, I think me and Jonathan are going to go to the final,
41:33but I think that it's going to be really, really tough.
41:35I think we're pretty even at the moment,
41:37but my main competition is going to be TJ
41:39because he's done really well so far.
41:45Brain Tito!
41:48Level six, sir.
41:50Roll boat!
41:51It's this level which will decide
41:54which two of my remaining brainy's
41:56will go on to battle it out
41:58for the black belt.
42:01Now, imagine you're a gymnast.
42:04Not only do you have your routine to remember,
42:07but you've got to keep in time to the music
42:09and you've got a load of people watching you.
42:13It's remembering stuff like this under pressure
42:15that level six is all about.
42:18It centres around three areas of the brain.
42:21The seeing part, the occipital lobes,
42:24the memory part, the temporal lobes
42:27and the movement part, the cerebellum.
42:30To the max!
42:33Room of Mental Nourishment
42:35Our three surviving brainy's
42:38are back in the room of Mental Nourishment.
42:40This time for a dose of memory training.
42:44Brain training.
42:46Memorise the sequence of colours.
42:49Go, go, go.
42:49You memorise that bit.
42:51I'll memorise this bit.
42:52You memorise that bit.
42:53I think the idea, Jonathan,
42:54is to remember the whole sequence.
42:56Making life easier kind of defeats the object.
42:59So, who's going to go first?
43:01TJ, you're going first.
43:02Come on.
43:03OK.
43:04Grey, green, silver, red.
43:06Green, yellow, purple, blue.
43:08Purple, orange, red.
43:10Oh, I've missed the green one.
43:13That's all fair.
43:13She's got three and I've got five
43:14and he's got three.
43:16Suffering, Sushi.
43:17I've seen more focus
43:18looking through a pair of milk bottles.
43:20Time for a training tip.
43:22Hey, I've got a tip.
43:24Create a song linked to the colours together.
43:27Let's do opera.
43:28Opera?
43:28Ray, green, silver, red.
43:34So, it might not be more tart,
43:36but if it helps to remember those colours,
43:38who cares?
43:39Green, yellow, purple, blue.
43:41Green, purple, red.
43:42I've got a green, I've got a silver,
43:43I've got a red.
43:44Memory training like this
43:45isn't just great for the brain,
43:47it's also very useful.
43:49Next time you're out shopping,
43:50try turning your shopping list into a song
43:52and see if you can remember everything on it.
43:55Our three brainies have another go.
43:58Pull your band over your eyes.
44:00OK.
44:02Ouch.
44:03I've got a grey, I've got a green,
44:04I've got a silver,
44:05I've got a red,
44:06green, yellow, purple, blue.
44:08I've got a green, purple, orange, red.
44:11And that's the way of the banana line.
44:13That's wicked.
44:14Thanks.
44:14Well done, brainies, top banana.
44:18I think Tamara's going to be pretty good, actually,
44:20because, well, you're really good at memory
44:22and you managed to get that song perfect first time.
44:26But I don't think I've got much of a chance
44:28of winning this now.
44:29Thanks, but I think you're going to be the best.
44:31Or TJ.
44:32You both did really well.
44:34OK, boy final.
44:35Will Tamara handle the pressure
44:38and grab her third win in a row?
44:42Or will the chaps turn it into an all-boy final?
44:46Only time will tell
44:48as our final three put their memory train into the test
44:50for one of two brown brain belts
44:53and a place on the table of supreme forkers.
44:58Super memory dizzy dance.
45:02A brainie is a spin-around on dizzy wheel
45:04total of ten time
45:06while using all power of focus
45:08to memorize five images in front of them.
45:11Then must raise against clock
45:13to cross-balancing beam
45:15and collect exact opposite
45:17of those image from ten hanging above them.
45:21If brainie remember seeing sun,
45:23then must pick moon.
45:25When happy they have arranged images in correct order,
45:28must hit gong to make clock stop.
45:31My tip for the brainies
45:35is to keep focused on the main objective
45:37and use their training
45:39to link the five images together.
45:42So, as our final three brave the dizzy wheel,
45:45will their memory training help them
45:47to remember the images
45:48and ignore the effects of being spun round
45:50like clams on a carousel?
45:52Time to spin.
45:58Tajani is first to brave the wheel,
46:00calling out the names of all the images
46:02to help him remember.
46:04Peace!
46:05Don't forget, our brainies must fight their dizziness
46:08and pick out the opposite images
46:10of the ones they saw on the wheel.
46:12So, here are the pictures that Tajani saw
46:14and here are the opposites.
46:16For everyone they get wrong,
46:19our brainies will pick up a five-second penalty.
46:23Oh, dear.
46:24After a confident start,
46:25Tajani's had a complete mental block.
46:28Come on, Tajani, focus.
46:31That peppermill looks to be in the wrong position.
46:34And with that balloon in his line-up,
46:36Tajani earned himself a couple of penalties for sure.
46:42Next to head off is confident Jonathan.
46:44Jonathan has remembered his training
46:46and found a way to link those images together.
46:51But Jonathan has just realised
46:53that he's only got four images.
46:58Can he get those temporal loaves working?
47:05But in his rush to find that last image,
47:07Jonathan has made a crucial mistake.
47:10Will it cost him deer?
47:11Yeah.
47:14Last to go is Tough Tamara.
47:23Very impressive during training.
47:27Here are those images again.
47:35So far, so good.
47:37And that's five.
47:39But can she get them in the right order?
47:50You bet.
47:52And you've got every right to look pleased.
47:57So, whose memory has come out on top?
47:59Tajani finished in one minute 44 seconds,
48:05but picked up two penalties,
48:06giving him a total of one minute 54.
48:11Confident Jonathan picked up only one penalty
48:13to give him a time of one minute 21.
48:18While Tough Tamara, with no penalties,
48:20banged her gong in a rapid one minute 12.
48:23And so it's Jonathan and Tamara who stay in
48:27and Tajani who goes out.
48:36Walk of eternal regret.
48:39I think I'll try to concentrate harder
48:43instead of getting distracted by the spinning.
48:46I'm feeling really bad because I thought,
48:48wow, I might be able to get to the brown belts.
48:50So with just one level to go,
48:55that leaves confident Jonathan and Tough Tamara
48:58to don their brown brain belts
48:59and prepare for the final showdown.
49:02I feel really excellent that I've made it this far,
49:05but I'm really scared that I might go out
49:07on the final round.
49:08I'm really confident about this round,
49:11and I'm doing it for the girls.
49:13I'm going to easily beat Tamara.
49:18Brain Jitsu.
49:20Eight young hopeful arrived at Brain Training Dojo
49:25to fight for Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt.
49:28As training got tougher,
49:30so brainies fell by wayside.
49:32Some lack concentration.
49:35Others let pressure get to them.
49:37One by one, all have been eliminated.
49:40Now just two remain.
49:42Tough Tamara, winner of last three level
49:44and on a roll.
49:45I'm really confident about this round,
49:48and I'm doing it for the girls.
49:50I'm confident Jonathan.
49:52Never out of top three.
49:54Yeah, I did all the training,
49:55and, well, it was really easy.
49:57But who will use Brain Training to max
49:59to win this last challenge?
50:03Level seven.
50:04Black Belt.
50:05So, this is it.
50:08Between my two remaining brainees and the black belt
50:12stands Brain Jitsu's ultimate challenge,
50:15a mental duel that is head-to-head in every sense.
50:20The battlefield?
50:21A table, but not just any table.
50:24For this, my friends, is the table of supreme focus,
50:27where our two brainees will attempt to move a ball across the table
50:32using only the power of their mind.
50:36By getting this far,
50:37they've already demonstrated mental control
50:39under many different types of pressure.
50:41But now, they must learn to focus their minds
50:44by entering a state of total calm.
50:48To prepare them,
50:49my two finalists will need to get into the zone.
50:52Room of Mental Nourishment.
51:00In this, their final visit to the Room of Mental Nourishment,
51:03our last two brainees are about to train
51:06in how to stay focused,
51:07no matter what's happening around them.
51:11Brain Training.
51:12Mentally prepare yourself for the final task.
51:15Don't let the sound put you off.
51:19So, our two finalists must block out the noises
51:22and concentrate only on finding their focus.
51:30Confident Jonathan starts off nice and calm,
51:33but then comes down with a fit of giggles.
51:37What's so funny?
51:43Well, that's one way of blocking out the sound.
51:46Perhaps a training tip will help.
51:49Visualise and focus on somewhere
51:50where you feel happy and calm.
51:55Take two.
51:57And once again,
51:57Tough Tomorrow's resorted to radical measures.
52:02But confident Jonathan looks to have taken that tip on board
52:05to finally discover his focus.
52:08I really want that black belt because everyone will know I'm the best
52:16and I did the best out of the whole of my school.
52:19Well, tough,
52:20because I'm going to win it for the girls and for my school.
52:23Can't stand the heat?
52:25What heat?
52:26Can confident Jonathan keep his focus for the next and final task?
52:30Or will it be tough to Mara who grabs her chance of glory?
52:35Let's find out.
52:36Table of supreme focus.
52:41Rules are simple.
52:43Each brainy must push ball to the opponent's end of table
52:46using only power of mind.
52:49Sensors in brainy's headbands measure brainwaves.
52:53This is converted into electrical signal,
52:55which moves ball.
52:57More focused mind.
52:58Stronger signal.
53:00And faster ball will travel.
53:02See how brainy's are doing on this readout.
53:06Two lines represent each player's brainwaves.
53:08Lower the line.
53:09More concentrated their mind.
53:11To make sure this is the test of all tests,
53:22our brainy's must win the best of three rounds.
53:28So, this is the big one.
53:30Our two finalists must use all their brain training
53:32to enter their zone of absolute focus.
53:35This is the reason they came to the dojo.
53:38This is the moment they've been training for.
53:41It's Tamara who's first to get the ball moving.
53:50Her lower black line is almost touching the bottom of the screen.
53:54Unable to match her concentration levels,
53:57a shocked-looking Jonathan is powerless
53:59to stop the ball from reaching his end.
54:021-0 to Tamara,
54:04and Jonathan will have to call on all his training
54:06if he's to turn this around.
54:10Round two.
54:11This time it's Jonathan who's off to the better start.
54:18His green line now the lower of the two.
54:25And even though Tamara's doing her best to resist,
54:28confident Jonathan keeps the pressure on.
54:30That's one all.
54:37It's all down to this.
54:39The final round.
54:41Who will cope best with the brain strain?
54:46We're off.
54:47And again it's Jonathan who's got the edge.
54:49Little by little he piles on the pressure.
55:01Until finally that ball reaches his opponent's end.
55:04It's all over.
55:05It's all over.
55:07After an epic head-to-head battle,
55:09it's confident Jonathan whose training has paid off.
55:12Digging deep to find new depths of focus,
55:15he truly has proved himself to be the master of the mind
55:18and worthy winner of the Brain Jitsu Black Belt.
55:21It makes me feel really privileged that I've got all the way through
55:25and won the back belt and beaten seven people to the final
55:29and won it, which is really amazing
55:31because I didn't think I'd get this far.
55:33But glory for one brings disappointment for another.
55:37And although she fought bravely,
55:39tough Tamara must now leave the dojo.
55:41I feel a little bit upset
55:48because I was going to do it for my school and the girls
55:50and it's a little bit upset because I've gone this far.
56:02What a brilliant display of mental focus from confident Jonathan.
56:06One nil down on the table of supreme focus,
56:09this gritty young brainy
56:10simply refused to give up.
56:15Drawing on all his training,
56:16he held his nerve to snatch that black brain belt
56:19from Tamara's grasp.
56:22Because I lost the first one,
56:24after the first one,
56:25I just felt terrible because I thought,
56:27oh, I'm going to lose this now.
56:28So I won the next two just with ease.
56:31Brain Jitsu has showed me
56:33that I have more mental ability than I thought I did.
56:35Our journey has come to an end.
56:38Another brainy has proven themselves worthy
56:40to wear the brain jitsu black belt.
56:43But while brain jitsu
56:45might represent the most extreme form of brain training,
56:48its philosophy can be shared by all.
56:52Each and every one of you
56:53has it in your power to grow your mind.
56:56All it takes is dedication and practice.
