00:00Braineys or insects were harmed in the making of this program,
00:03and that none of the training you're about to see be attempted unless under expert supervision.
00:08Eight Braineys, one challenge.
00:11To use complex mass of 100 billion cells we call Brain,
00:15for chance to win Brain Jutsu Black Brain Belt.
00:18This is Brain Jutsu.
00:27Born in Lancashire, trained in Japan,
00:30with mind as sharp as Samurai's sword.
00:32He is Brain Master.
00:34He is the Sensei.
00:36Konnichiwa, and welcome to Brain Jutsu.
00:41Mental training specially designed to boost brain power and focus.
00:47My trainees, or Braineys,
00:49have been following a basic program of training in the comfort of their own home.
00:53A brain-boosting routine of exercise,
00:55sleep,
00:58and enough fruit and veg to stock a greengrocer's.
01:01After training, it's...
01:03I can focus more on the thing, because I was very nervous.
01:07The training has really helped me, um, with my confidence, I guess.
01:10I want to win just a bit more than everyone else.
01:14Now my Braineys must put their training into practice.
01:17By testing a part of their brain we use every day.
01:19Level 1.
01:21You're no fault!
01:24Take a look at my very cluttered garage.
01:26Now, try to find the little rubber duck.
01:30Spotted, eh?
01:31Congratulations!
01:32You've just used your occipital lobes.
01:35This area, the seeing part of our brain,
01:38allows us to recognise and separate images from each other.
01:42The seven Braineys, who use their occipital lobes the best,
01:45will be allowed to enter my Brain Jutsu Dojo,
01:48where their training will continue.
01:50The one who fails will be left outside.
01:53Ho!
01:54Feel the burn.
01:56Enter the Dojo!
01:58Braineys must first answer four questions
02:02by counting the different faces on the board in front of them.
02:06Get the questions right,
02:07and they'll be left with a four-digit code,
02:09which they must then use to unlock a piece of brain
02:12and secure their place in the Dojo.
02:15But with only seven pieces of brain and eight Braineys,
02:18one of either Zara, Ryan, Sarah, Peter, Dina, Jesse, Sherelle or Caitlin
02:25will be left outside and eliminated.
02:28The atmosphere in the noodle bar is more intense
02:33than a stare-off with a one-eyed sumo,
02:35as the four questions are revealed.
02:38How many blue faces are there?
02:44How many green smiley faces are there?
02:55How many black faces have two ears?
02:58How many smiley faces have freckles?
03:10The answer our Braineys are looking for is two, one, two, five.
03:15The order in which they unlock their piece of brain
03:17will decide the order our Braineys take part in the levels to come.
03:21The Brainey who does not complete this challenge will be eliminated.
03:24Sarah is first to reach a piece of brain with more Braineys falling close behind,
03:33but have they got the code right?
03:37Sarah's got it wrong and has gone back to the bar,
03:39but Peter has cracked it and is the first to claim his place in the Dojo.
03:43Ryan's hot on Peter's tail.
03:48That's two boys down, only Jesse left.
03:53Don't forget the code our Braineys are looking for is two, one, two, five,
03:57as there are two blue faces,
03:59one green smiley face,
04:01two black faces with two ears,
04:03and five smiley faces with freckles.
04:06Dina and Sarah are next to get it right,
04:11but Zara is left to wait it out in the noodle bar
04:14and hope one of Jesse, Caitlin or Sherelle is wrong.
04:19Zara's got a chance, but she's got it wrong too.
04:23Come on, Braineys, stay calm and focused and use your occipital lobes.
04:28Jesse and Caitlin crack the code,
04:30which leaves just Sherelle and Zara to battle it out for the last place in the dojo.
04:34They've both got an answer at the same time,
04:37but it's Sherelle who's got there first.
04:40Duck got you, Oza!
04:41She's wrong!
04:44Zara sees her opportunity and she grabs it with both hands.
04:48It's the right code, so Zara's in and Sherelle is out.
04:56So, as Seven enter the dojo for a chance to survive six more gruelling levels of brain training,
05:02for Sherelle, the dream of the black belt has ended before it began.
05:07If I could do anything different, I'd probably look at the question again,
05:12read it over again and again and again.
05:15The person I think would win is Peter,
05:17because he can work things out quicker in his mind.
05:20So, with six levels to go, only Peter, Ryan, Dina, Zara, Jesse, Caitlin and Zara
05:26have entered the dojo and achieved the first of their coloured brain belts.
05:31I think the person who's going to win the black belt will probably be Zara,
05:35because she's always confident in what she does.
05:38Well, I still feel nervous, but now that I'm through from the first round, it's still good.
05:43I'm really determined and I really want to win.
05:48In this next level of training, things are going to get really hard.
05:58We do things every day without even thinking about it,
06:03like using the remote control for the telly.
06:05But try turning up the volume with the hand that you don't normally use.
06:10Go on, a lot more harder, isn't it?
06:12If you manage to do that, you're using part of your brain
06:15that deals with problem solving, the frontal lobes.
06:19And that's what level two is all about.
06:22Taking something you can only do without thinking and doing it differently.
06:27Work it!
06:28To prepare them for using their frontal lobes in the next challenge,
06:31my brainees are going to need some training.
06:34Room of Mental Nourishment
06:38The Room of Mental Nourishment is where our young hopefuls
06:41will train their brains to help them progress to the next levels of the dojo.
06:45The more serious our brainees take the training,
06:47they're better prepared they'll be for the challenges that lie ahead.
06:50And in level two, that challenge is all about getting their brains to think in a new way.
06:54Write the name of the brainee you think will win the black belt.
06:58Write backwards using the hand you don't normally write with.
07:02Backwards?
07:03So, our brainees are writing backwards with the wrong hand.
07:07This will help them to think in a new way by getting them to use their frontal lobes.
07:11Looks like Peter thinks Jessie is going to be the winner.
07:14Apparently, you only need the first and the last letters to be correct.
07:18All the others between it can be jumbled up and you still get the word right.
07:22I'm not sure I put my money on him winning Pete.
07:25I don't think he's really got the right idea.
07:27Training tip time!
07:31Picture the word in front of you before you write it.
07:33Think about each individual letter.
07:35Ryan's got it right.
07:38He thinks Rettep, a.k.a. Peter, is the strongest contender.
07:42And he seems he's not the only one.
07:44Who are you lot writing down?
07:46I wrote Peter.
07:47I wrote Peter.
07:47I wrote Peter probably.
07:50That confident smile says it all, Pete.
07:52You think you're going to win too.
07:55Yeah.
07:56If you want to work your frontal lobes at home by writing backwards just like Sarah is right now,
08:01it'll help improve your all-round focus.
08:03It's one task we've had and I happened to come first in it.
08:10I mean, it could have been completely different.
08:13Ryan grasped the training straight away.
08:15Will it see him through to the next challenge?
08:18Jesse didn't seem to get it.
08:20Will this affect his performance?
08:22And will Peter's confidence be well-founded?
08:25There's only one way to find out.
08:27It's time for our brainies to put their training to the test and compete for the orange belt.
08:33Guardian of the Dojo and Task Adjudicator the Sheehan will now demonstrate the level 2 challenge.
08:39Spell backwards.
08:41Step forward.
08:42To stand chance of gaining orange belt, seven brainies must now think in reverse.
08:48Sheehan will show them picture.
08:50They have to say what is.
08:52That is cut.
08:53Get right and our brainies can step forward.
09:02Get wrong and they stay put.
09:05Brainies can choose length of word they want to spell backwards.
09:08Longer word.
09:09More time they get to answer.
09:11Three seconds for three-letter word.
09:13Up to six seconds for six letters.
09:16More letters.
09:17More steps towards destination.
09:19There is slight advantage to going first in challenge, but order brainies take part is order they completed level 1.
09:27Whoever not finished will be eliminated from the dojo.
09:31My brainy tip here is to imagine the whole word and then break it down into groups of letters.
09:37Hoo!
09:38Hoo!
09:38Work those frontal lobes.
09:41Five-letter words.
09:46The group has tipped him favourite to win.
09:48Can Peter get the five?
09:50Which?
09:52C-H-T-I-W.
09:56Batted tempura.
09:57Confident Peter's wrong.
09:59It's a shocking start to the level 2 challenge.
10:02Four.
10:04Cake.
10:05E-K-A-C.
10:08Four letters is a piece of cake for Ryan.
10:12Four.
10:15Go.
10:16T-A-O-G.
10:20Dina, sail through.
10:24Four.
10:26Lion.
10:27N-O-I-L.
10:29Four letters are roaring success for Sarah.
10:34Five.
10:35Jessie didn't seem to get the train in.
10:37Will it matter?
10:38Igloo.
10:39O-O-L-G-I.
10:41Not this time.
10:45A nice cool five steps.
10:48Four.
10:51Fork.
10:52K-R-O-F.
10:57Caitlin and Zara both get the safe four and then it's back to Peter who's in last place.
11:04Six-letter word.
11:05Ooh, he's going for the big six to make up for the first mistake.
11:10Button.
11:11N-O-T-T-U-B.
11:16And it's paid off.
11:17Another one like that and he'd be back on top.
11:21Ryan, Dina and Sarah all do well.
11:24Now it's Jessie's turn.
11:25Five.
11:29Panda.
11:30A-D-A-N-P.
11:36He went for the five again but it didn't work this time.
11:39Jessie stays put and it's not long before he's way behind the others and it's back to confident Peter.
11:45Six-letter word.
11:49Parrot.
11:49T-O-R-R-A-P.
11:55Unbelievable.
11:56After getting the first word wrong he's risked the six twice and snagged that first orange brain belt.
12:03A whole run of correct answers means Ryan's second to reach the podium.
12:07With Dina coming third and Sarah takes fourth place.
12:10That just leaves Jessie, Caitlin and Zara to battle it out for the last two orange brain belts.
12:15Six.
12:15If Jessie gets the six he's just one step away from his place in the next level.
12:20Bridge.
12:21E-D-I mean E-G-D-R-B.
12:28That bridge has left Jessie in troubled water.
12:31A slip from the girls is his only chance.
12:35Four.
12:37Oh, the tension is almost too much.
12:40T-N-E-T.
12:42So Caitlin is in and Jessie's place in the dojo all hangs on Zara.
12:48Three.
12:50Hat.
12:52T-A-H.
12:55Hat's off to her.
12:57She's done it.
12:59Zara's in and Jessie is out.
13:02He must relinquish his yellow brain belt and tread the lonely path of the...
13:07Walk of Eternal Regret.
13:10I feel pretty bad knowing that I got that far but then I got what eliminated.
13:17I think Peter's going to win the black belt because even though he was the first person to make a mistake, he's still got two sixes correct.
13:23So with five levels to go, only Peter, Ryan, Dina, Sarah, Caitlin and Zara have gained their orange brain belts.
13:33I was really nervous at the beginning but as I got through it, I paced myself and I got through.
13:38I was really praying that Jessie would get it wrong because I knew if he got it right then I would probably be going.
13:45When I get the first one wrong, I think, oh no, this is disaster.
13:48And then I get the next one right and I get a bit better and then it pays off and yeah, here I am.
13:55Brain T2.
13:56Brainy, not so brainy.
14:02Who's the clever clogs and whose brain needs a lot more training?
14:06Emails, internet brain training, computer games.
14:09None of which would be possible without John Vincent Atanasoff who invented the first ever electronic digital computer back in 1937.
14:16Now, back in 1988, another electronic boffin called Robert Morris created the first computer virus and had the bright idea of releasing it onto the internet as a harmless experiment.
14:29Problem was, his little virus quickly grew out of control, causing millions of computers to crash worldwide and costing the US government alone over $10 million.
14:39Now that is what I call a bad day at the office.
14:41Brainy, John Atanasoff, not so brainy, Robert Morris.
14:50Brain Jitsu.
14:54Pressure in Brain Jitsu Dojo rising.
14:57Now, just six young hopeful remain to compete under watchful eye of She-Han.
15:02Caitlyn, clone under radar so far, but what's this space?
15:06Confident Peter, riding high after two wins in row.
15:10I got the first one wrong and then it really paid off, the two sixes, so I'm really pleased with that.
15:15Zara and Zara, the rhyming girls.
15:18I was really praying that Jesse would get it wrong because I knew if he got it right, then I would probably be going.
15:25Ryan, who is placed second in both challenge.
15:29And Dina, first of girls in both levels.
15:32I was really nervous at the beginning, but as I got through it, I paced myself and I got through.
15:37Challenge about to get even tougher.
15:39Only two Brady will make through to final test.
15:42Table of supreme forecasts.
15:44Where must move ball with power of mind?
15:47For chance to win, Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt is a time for...
15:52Level 3.
15:54Waze Belt.
15:54Now, we all like to chat, but did you know that using words to communicate is one of the main reasons why our brains have grown so incredibly powerful?
16:06And that having a conversation exercises both halves of the brain.
16:10Now, if all that's doing your head in, allow me to explain.
16:14Imagine you're the trumpet player in an orchestra.
16:19Your main focus is on your own notes, but the conductor, well, he has to listen for everyone's notes.
16:26It's the same with the brain.
16:28There's the left half, which deals with the details, and there's the right half, which looks at the overall picture.
16:34This next level of training strengthens my brainies' focus by working one half of their brain under pressure.
16:42Hey, pump it up!
16:44Room of mental nourishment.
16:50It's our second visit to the brain training room of mental nourishment.
16:54Brainies have a choice as to whether they take part or not, but any extra training they do will help them with the next challenge.
17:01For level 3, it's communication.
17:04Brain training.
17:05Get into two groups.
17:07One group describes the picture in front of them.
17:10The other group draws it.
17:12OK, go on.
17:12Next to the line, next to the number 3, there's a line, and under the letter D.
17:19So, our brainies are in two groups.
17:21One group should use the right side of their brains to describe clearly how to draw the picture.
17:26The other team should use the left side of their brains to concentrate on interpreting those instructions to draw the same picture.
17:34It's not going very well, is it?
17:45The girls don't seem to be that clear.
17:47Um, is there a big circle around it?
17:51Yeah.
17:52And the other group are asking questions when they should be listening.
17:54So, to start with covering the four squares?
17:57Yeah.
17:57So, what it would look like now is an egg.
18:00It's all going a bit egg-shaped.
18:02Training tip time.
18:03Tip, start with the overall shape, then add the details.
18:08You know where you drew, like, 3D?
18:11Yep.
18:12In that coordinate?
18:12Um, there's, like, you drew it in a square.
18:15Yeah.
18:16And then, like, there's a square above it.
18:18The key to this training is to talk one at a time and listen to each other.
18:22Brainies must work as one team.
18:24After all, they might be on the other side of the fence in the next challenge.
18:28At the top right corner, put your pen there and then draw a quarter of a circle to the left-hand side.
18:38Don't go to the other corner.
18:40That really looks, yeah, is it a pig?
18:42Yeah.
18:42Yeah.
18:43Yes.
18:45Can we see your picture?
18:49What happened?
18:50Sorry.
18:51That's weird.
18:52It is really good because it's got the same, it's not exactly a circle, but it's the same shape as that one.
18:58Can we see yours so we can see how well we did?
19:01Yeah.
19:01It does look the same.
19:03Yeah, the eyes were a bit weird.
19:05It looks a bit like a baby cry.
19:07The girls' instructions were good.
19:08We only had to ask it once or twice what square it was in, the coordinates of that square.
19:13But otherwise, it was good.
19:14But Pete, you shouldn't have had to ask at all.
19:17If I had to go with a partner for the next task, it would be Zara or...
19:22Zara.
19:23Ooh, you're all charmer, Ryan.
19:25The girls' instructions weren't really that clear, although the picture turned out okay.
19:30But will the girls fare better in the next round?
19:33And how will the boys do if they're on the instructing side of the fence?
19:38Time to find out as our six now put their communication training to the test.
19:42This level, test how well our brainies can communicate.
19:54So, our six need to be in teams of two.
19:56The chopsticks will decide their pairs.
19:58So, there's Dina and Peter, Caitlin and Ryan, Sarah and Zara, who Charming Ryan wanted to be with after the training, but perhaps not for the right reasons.
20:11As quickly as possible, teams must whack open six lanterns containing number that go together to form some.
20:19Pairs first need to decide who is Guider, who is Whacker.
20:24Whackers will be blindfolded and will be relying on Guider to locate lanterns.
20:29When all six are opened, brainies stop clock by shouting,
20:34Brinjitzu!
20:35Quicker they whack lanterns, more time they have to pick up numbers and work out some.
20:40When brainies are happy with answer, hit gong!
20:44First two teams to provide correct answer get green belts and advance to next level.
20:50One brainy from losing team will be eliminated.
20:53The key to success here is for the Guider to use the right side of their brain to follow their team-mate's progress and give them clear instructions.
21:03For their partner, it's vital they use the left side of their brain to focus on these instructions and nothing else.
21:12Step two small steps.
21:14First to put their communication training to the test are the rhyming girls, Sarah and Zara.
21:20Raise the bat up and hit.
21:23Um, go, go, um, right.
21:26Whack.
21:28Both girls run the talking team in the training and their instructions had room for improvement.
21:34Hopefully, Zara can kick the right talking side of her brain into Guider now.
21:38Whack.
21:40Whack.
21:41Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it's coming together for the girls.
21:45Uh, turn slightly to your right.
21:48Zara is getting flustered and her instructions are more confusing than a sumo on a diet.
21:54Oh, come on, man.
21:55Whack there.
21:56Whack.
21:57Even Zara is getting frustrated with her partner.
22:00They must both remain calm or their dream of the black brain belt will crumble like crispy seaweed.
22:05Whack straight.
22:06The right side of Zara's brain can't seem to get going.
22:10High.
22:10Higher.
22:12Brain jitsu.
22:14They've finally finished.
22:15But with a time of three minutes and one second, Ryan must be thanking his lucky stars.
22:20He wasn't paired up with them now.
22:21And Zara isn't happy at all.
22:23He's taking me good directions.
22:25Why?
22:25You were good.
22:26You were good.
22:29Forward, right.
22:31Now Dina and Peter.
22:32Right.
22:33Back.
22:34Dina talked and Peter listened in the training and they've gone for the same combo here.
22:38And it seems to be working because they're whacking lanterns faster than a ninja on wheels.
22:43Whack.
22:44Confident Peter is listening well and Dina's spot on with her instructions.
22:49Whack.
22:50Whack.
22:51Forward.
22:53Forward.
22:54Whack.
22:56Turn to your left.
22:58Whack.
22:59Brain jitsu.
23:00They've finished already.
23:02With one minute and six seconds, two minutes faster than Zara and Zara, can Caitlin and Ryan beat that excellent time?
23:10Forward.
23:12Forward.
23:13Left.
23:14Caitlin and Ryan were both on the listening team in the training, but Caitlin seems to have got the right side of her brain up to speed very quickly.
23:21And these two are making a better pairing than sushi and soy sauce.
23:25Whack.
23:27Forward.
23:28Whack.
23:30Forward.
23:33Backward a bit.
23:34Whack.
23:36Forward.
23:38Whack.
23:40Whack.
23:42Brain jitsu.
23:42They've finished already.
23:44They've finished already.
23:44And with an excellent time of 41 seconds, they're first to collect their numbers.
23:52Peter and Dina are next.
23:58With rhyming girls Sarah and Zara last.
24:00These are the numbers our teams are looking for.
24:05See if you can work out the answer.
24:08Three times seven plus four equals 25.
24:11Caitlin and Ryan take a moment to check their answer before they gong.
24:16Peter and Dina gong next, with Sarah and Zara finishing last.
24:21The other teams have got their answers correct, so the rhyming girls must face each other in the...
24:26Stare off.
24:30Both braineys must use their training to focus on fighting the urge to blink.
24:35There's only one green belt up for grabs, so who'll blink first and be eliminated?
24:44Oh, it's all over in the blink of an eye.
24:46Sarah's in and Zara is out.
24:48Walk of eternal regret.
24:58I'm really upset, because I thought I would go further, and the Stare off was a complete disaster.
25:05But I think Peter's going to win the black belt, because he's done so well in the past.
25:11So with four levels left, it's green brain belts for Peter, Ryan, Dina, Sarah and Caitlin.
25:16In the Stare off, I did it with Zara, and it was quite stressful, because she's my best friend.
25:24And I didn't want her to go out, but at the same time, I didn't want me to go out.
25:28The training was good, because it taught me to listen with a bit more detail.
25:32I'm really happy, now that I've got food to the next round.
25:37Brain Jitsu.
25:41Level four.
25:42Blue belt.
25:43This fourth level requires our brain ease to master a primitive part of the brain called the amygdala.
25:51The area that responds to threat.
25:53Oh, oh, oh.
25:57Remember the last time you felt afraid or panicky?
26:00Maybe it was on a dark night.
26:02Well, that feeling was triggered by the old amygdala.
26:06Stress can make you lose focus.
26:10Fact.
26:11Which is why my brainies must train to keep their emotions under control.
26:17Room of Mental Nourishment.
26:19We're back in the Room of Mental Nourishment, and it's time for our five remaining green belt holders to overcome fear.
26:30Brain training.
26:32Form a circle.
26:33Pass a disgusting drink around the circle, only passing it on when you have said a word beginning with A.
26:39After one minute, the brainy holding the drink has to drink it.
26:43And today's drink is cod liver oil.
26:45Ooh, me favourite.
26:46I'll start then.
26:50Oh, okay.
26:52That looks like oil.
26:54Animal.
26:56Apple.
26:59Adventurous.
27:01Alphabet.
27:02Actress.
27:04Aeroplane.
27:06Alligator.
27:07Antelope.
27:09Air.
27:10Actor.
27:10Accident.
27:13Aeroplane.
27:14I said that.
27:15You don't have to drink it yet, I just have to say another word.
27:18Okay, then.
27:20Uh.
27:21Come on, Ryan, override your amygdala.
27:24Acrobat.
27:25Active.
27:27Ant.
27:28Anagram.
27:32Abracadabra.
27:33Algebra.
27:36You're learing the fear of the drink get to you, Dina.
27:38Focus only on the word.
27:40Apricot.
27:41Addition.
27:41I said apricot.
27:43Did you?
27:43Yeah.
27:45Oh, you have to drink it.
27:47Dina.
27:48Don't giggle.
27:49That gong means the minute's up and Dina has to drink the cod liver oil.
27:56Not too bad.
27:58That was pretty daring, Dina.
27:59No hesitation at all.
28:01But here's a training tip.
28:02I'm for sure.
28:03Tip.
28:04Concentrate.
28:05Try to blank out the time and fear of the drink to avoid panicking.
28:09Okay.
28:09Just think of it as apple juice, I mean.
28:12But you don't want to drink it, okay?
28:13So you don't want to see.
28:15Okay.
28:16Ask that, okay?
28:17Yeah.
28:17So, if you imagine the drink as something nice like apple juice, you'll stay calm.
28:21If you're afraid of the drink, it'll cloud your focus and you won't be able to come up
28:26with any word at all.
28:27Amazing.
28:27If you practice this technique at home, it will help you focus better in pressured situations
28:31like exams.
28:33Amusement.
28:34Assignment.
28:35Audio.
28:38Acrylic.
28:39All Ryan's thinking about is cod liver oil.
28:47That's another minute up and charming Ryan has to drink.
28:52Watery.
28:53Oily.
28:54My technique was while everyone else was saying a word, for me to think of a word,
29:01so that when, so I had a word prepared, so that when it was my go, I didn't like hesitate
29:06like you do.
29:08I was thinking about them in my head, but then when it got around to you guys, I would
29:12say it and then you guys would go really fast and then I would lose one.
29:15Yeah, that's what happened, I forgot it.
29:17Yeah.
29:18So, daring Dina and charming Ryan both struggled in the training.
29:22Sarah did very well and confident Pete was true to form, but who'll be eliminated next?
29:28Our five must now put their brain training to the test to overcome fear and compete for
29:33their blue brain belt.
29:34Creepy Crawly Word Grab.
29:38This level will test of mind over matter for brainies and will push them to really overcome
29:43their fear.
29:45Underneath the creepy crawlies lie an assortment of letters worth different points.
29:49Brainies have just one minute to plunge hands into tank and pick out up to seven letters
29:54each.
29:55They then have a further minute to make higher scoring words they can.
29:59To do well, my brainies must block out the signals coming from their amygdala and ignore
30:07the creepy crawlies.
30:09The quicker they combat their fear, the more time they'll have to pick out the high scoring
30:13letters.
30:16Oh, that's disgusting.
30:18Our brainies should dig deep beneath the worms and keep a keen eye out for the golden
30:25letters, because if they find one and manage to use it in their word, they'll double their
30:29score.
30:33Daring Dina and charming Ryan struggled in the training, but both look pretty fearless here.
30:38They've already pulled out their maximum seven letters.
30:41Confident Peter and Sarah did well in the training, and they're both remaining calm here too.
30:49In fact, all five of our brainies are doing a sterling job.
30:54The gong means that their minute is up, and now our brainies have another minute to make
30:59the longest word they can out of the letters they've collected.
31:04Can Ryan get the X in somewhere?
31:08Dina's got a few options there.
31:11See if you can make a word from the anagram on the screen now.
31:22So, how have our green belt holders fared?
31:26Beat.
31:29Six points for Peter, but can the others beat it?
31:33Ox.
31:35Excellent use of an X. Nine points for Ryan.
31:41Pains.
31:42It took great pains to get there, but Dina gets eight points.
31:48Mode.
31:50Seven points for Sarah means that Confident Peter's place in the dojo all rests on Caitlin's score.
31:56Beep.
31:58Toop, toop, beep, beep.
31:59With eight points, Caitlin's in, and Confident Peter is out.
32:03And the others look shocked.
32:04Walk of eternal regret.
32:13The brain training was useful because I didn't really think about the worms, but maybe if I
32:19would have got into one of the bigger piles, I may have got a better letter.
32:23I think we'll see Ryan and Sarah in the final because they can both keep their concentration
32:29well.
32:32So, with only three levels to go, Ryan, Dina, Sarah, and Caitlin proudly wear their blue brain
32:39belts.
32:40In the training, I used the tip and I thought of the cod liver oil as apple juice, and
32:44I used that for thinking of the worms as mud.
32:48I feel great that I'm in the lead, and it's given me a great confidence boost.
32:54Brain Titu.
32:57Brainy.
32:58Not so brainy.
33:01Who's a clever clock, and whose brain needs a lot more training?
33:05It's the 1870s, and a geezer called Alexander Graham Bell goes and fits the old dog and bone,
33:10or telephone, so you and I can gossip, gasp, and natter to people all over the world.
33:16Telephone-tastic.
33:16Hello?
33:17Mom, I'm on the telly.
33:19I'll call you back.
33:19Where was I?
33:20Oh, yeah, phones.
33:21Off to Finland.
33:22Every year, a load of Finns, and folks from all over the world, take part in the Mobile
33:26Phone Throwing World Championships.
33:28Why?
33:29Well, to see how far they can throw them, of course.
33:31Right, got to ring the old dear back.
33:33Brainy, Alexander Graham Bell.
33:35Not so brainy.
33:36Phone flingers in Finland.
33:39Brain Jitsu.
33:43Attention in Brain Jitsu Dojo Mountain.
33:45Now, just so young hopeful remain to compete on the watchful eye of Sheehan.
33:51Taring Dina, who could be Dark Horse of Tojo.
33:55Charming Ryan.
33:56First two levels in row.
33:58I feel great that I'm in the lead, and it's given me a great confidence boost.
34:02It doesn't really matter if I came fourth or third or second or first.
34:12It just matters that I'm in that final round.
34:14Only two brainy will make final test.
34:17Table of Supreme Vokas.
34:19Where must move forward with power of mind.
34:22Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt is within their grasp.
34:25Here's the time for.
34:27Level five.
34:29Red Bolt.
34:29Now, if you've just taken up competitive bog snorkelling, then you might be interested
34:36to know that your new hobby is doing wonders for the old grey matter.
34:41Exercising both the thinking part of the brain, the cerebrum, and the doing part, the cerebellum.
34:47You see, doing new things increases the flow of blood into your head, which keeps your brain
34:53cells topped up with the oxygen they need to perform at their best.
34:58So, in level five, my brainees are going to be challenged to learn new skills.
35:03Now, you can speed up how quickly the brain takes in new stuff.
35:08And this is what our brainees are going to train for now.
35:12Room of Mental Nourishment.
35:14It's our brainees' fourth visit to the room of Mental Nourishment.
35:20For this brain training exercise, they're going to be working their brains by learning
35:24something new.
35:27Brain training.
35:28Flick the bean bag from the top of your head to the back of your neck.
35:33OK.
35:34You know, it's just like...
35:35No, I don't want to.
35:37It's all like this.
35:38Oh.
35:40This is how it's done.
35:43I love it.
35:45You see, it isn't as easy as it looks, Daring Dina.
35:48This exercise needs to be taxing, so the thinking part of your brain and the doing part of your
35:52brain are equally pushed, and you're warmed up for the next level of the dojo.
35:58Ryan's got it.
35:59Look, I've done it.
36:00Yeah.
36:01I've done it, but it's on my back.
36:03I'm the only one who hasn't done it yet.
36:05Oh.
36:07Because of my ponytail.
36:09No excuse, Caitlin.
36:10Sarah's got a ponytail and she's done it.
36:12Time for a training tip.
36:14Tip.
36:15Have confidence.
36:16Compliment each other.
36:18Ryan, you're doing OK.
36:20Just OK?
36:21Yeah.
36:22Yeah.
36:24Dina.
36:24Very good technique.
36:27Caitlin, keep trying.
36:30Boosting your confidence really can help if you're learning something new.
36:34If you stay positive and tell yourself you can do it, you're much more likely to succeed
36:38at your new skill.
36:39Try not knocking your head forward first, because it'll just slip off.
36:42Try and go back then forward.
36:43So, Charming Ryan was happy sharing his beanbag knowledge with the lovely Sarah.
36:51But will it help her beat him in the next round?
36:54Caitlin never really mastered her new skill.
36:57Will it stop her from getting the red?
36:59Only time will tell, as our four must now put their training to the test.
37:06Chop, chop, don't drop.
37:07To win the red red belt, braineese must remain mentally confident as they learn new physical
37:15skill.
37:15Remaining four must keep ball in airflow and guide it along obstacle course, through hoops
37:21and into basket.
37:23It is race against clock, but braineese must remain confident.
37:27There is five-second penalty every time ball drops.
37:30Braineese with slowest time will be eliminated.
37:32The tip for my braineese in this next task is to remain calm and think positive thoughts.
37:41Giving in to frustration will only lessen their focus and slow them up.
37:46The atmosphere in the dojo is more intense than a sumo's food fight, as all four of our
37:51braineese get started.
37:52They must achieve mental focus to master this new physical skill.
37:58Ryan did well in the training and was even giving advice to Sarah.
38:01Sarah, even though he's made a few mistakes here, he isn't letting it knock his confidence.
38:06His head is up and he looks calm.
38:09He's mastered this new skill, so it's smooth sailing right to the end.
38:27Well done.
38:31Daring Dina managed to master the beanbag in the training and it looks like she's tamed
38:37the air pipe here because so far no penalties.
38:40Dina's face is the picture of concentration.
38:54She hasn't taken her eye off the ball and has focused her mind to control her body.
39:01The perfect run.
39:02What a girl.
39:04Now Sarah.
39:05Sarah seems to be struggling here.
39:07Her eyes are following the ball, but she's not actually moving her body.
39:10To master this physical skill, Sarah must focus her mind totally on controlling her body.
39:18She mustn't get frustrated at her mistakes.
39:20Not a great run, but was it enough to get the red?
39:30Finally, Caitlin.
39:33Caitlin really struggled in the training, but she can't blame her ponytail this time if she
39:37doesn't shine in this challenge.
39:38Not a great start.
39:41Will she let her mistakes get to her?
39:43Looks like Caitlin has found her focus and glides slowly to the end of the course.
39:56But was it fast enough to make the semi-finals?
40:00This competition is closer than identical Japanese twins.
40:03Time for the results.
40:04Ryan, 56 seconds with 8 penalties.
40:10That's 1.33 in total.
40:14Dina, 56 seconds with no penalties.
40:17What a woman.
40:20Sarah, 42 seconds but 13 penalties.
40:23That's 1 minute 47 seconds in total.
40:26Sarah's place in the dojo.
40:28Hangs on Caitlin's time.
40:2954 seconds with 9 penalties, so 1 minute 39 seconds.
40:35Caitlin is in and Sarah is out.
40:48Walk of eternal regret.
40:51I'm pretty gutted that I didn't go through that round, but I'm happy that I went this far.
40:57I think that Dina might win the black belt.
41:01She's really confident and I think she might win.
41:06So, with only two levels left, Ryan, Dina and Caitlin stand proud in red.
41:11I'm really determined because we're getting closer to the end and I really want to win the black belt.
41:15It's a real confidence booster that I got through with.
41:19It's this level which will decide which two of my remaining braineys will go on to battle it out for the black belt.
41:36Now, imagine you're in your school play.
41:40As well as lines to remember and moving around on stage, there's also the audience watching you.
41:46It's remembering stuff under pressure like this that level 6 is all about.
41:51It centres around three areas of the brain.
41:55The seeing part, the occipital lobes, the memory part, the temporal lobes and the movement part, the cerebellum.
42:05To the max!
42:07Room of mental nourishment.
42:09With only three braineys remaining, this penultimate brain training challenge is all about improving your memory.
42:17Brain training. Memorise the sequence of colours.
42:21Oh, I thought you had to eat them.
42:23So, in this task, our three remaining braineys are exercising their occipital lobes or seeing part of their brain and their temporal lobes, the memory bank.
42:34I'll go first then.
42:37Last minute revision.
42:39Orange, purple, yellow, purple, red, blue, red, green, green, silver, green, green, silver.
42:52Close.
42:53You're really close.
42:54You just got two wrong.
42:55Well, because you added a few.
42:56You added a green and a silver.
42:58Orange, purple, red, purple, blue, red, green, green, silver, grey.
43:05You missed a...
43:06You missed a...
43:07I think you missed the purple out.
43:10Yeah.
43:10Or was it your...
43:11And you missed the red out?
43:12Yeah.
43:13And then you got that right.
43:15Then you just stuck that one of the greens.
43:16I can go first.
43:17Yeah, I'll tell you.
43:18Okay.
43:19You've had longer to do it, so you probably should do it better.
43:22Orange, purple, yellow, purple, red, blue, red, green, green, silver, green, grey.
43:34I went first, though, so it'll sort of fit.
43:42Oh, excuses, excuses, Caitlin.
43:45Here's a training tip to help you.
43:48Tip.
43:48Create a song linking the colours together.
43:52Just sort of, like, think of a theme tune, like EastEnders and, like, sort of, like...
43:56Shall we all try that?
43:58Three, two, one, go.
44:00Purple, yellow, red, green, grey.
44:04Orange, blue, green, green, red, purple, silver.
44:10Memory tests like this are a great way of training your brain.
44:13Next time you're learning your times table, sing it to a well-known tune, and it should
44:18help you remember it.
44:19Purple, yellow, green, red, grey.
44:24Orange, blue, green, green, and purple and silver.
44:29I've got these modelled around and you missed the red, that's it.
44:31Yeah.
44:32Purple, orange, red, green, grey.
44:37Purple, orange, blue, green, green.
44:40Red, green.
44:42Oh, I can't do it anymore.
44:43Purple, yellow, red, green, grey.
44:49Orange, blue, green, green.
44:51Red, purple, and silver.
44:53Yeah, you got that right.
44:55Yeah, yeah, yeah.
44:56Which method would you use if it's memory next?
44:59Erm, probably do repetition.
45:02Who?
45:02I think I'll do the song.
45:05I'll do repetition.
45:05So, there's a divide in the group about the training technique.
45:10Dina said she'll use the musical tip, but will ignoring it mean make or break for the other
45:15two?
45:15There's only one way to find out.
45:17Our final three must now put their memory train into the test to win their brown brain belt
45:22and secure their place in the final.
45:24Super Memory Dizzy Dash.
45:29Each brainie is spun around on Dizzy Wheel a total of ten times.
45:35Their task to use all their power of focus to memorize five images in front of them.
45:40Then, race against clock to cross-balancing beam and collect same five images from ten hanging
45:48above them.
45:51Then, must arrange images in reverse order.
45:55When they are happy with their selection, a hit of gong stops clock.
46:04My tip for the braineese is to keep focused on the main objective and use their training
46:09to link the five images together.
46:12So, our final three brave the wheel to compete for their brown brain belt and for a chance
46:18to triumph over the table of supreme focus.
46:20Time to spin.
46:28Will their memory training help our braineese ignore the effects of the wheel and memorize
46:33the images?
46:34The order they are looking for is at the bottom of the screen.
46:39First up, charming Ryan.
46:45He's a little unsteady on his feet, but he gets straight in with picking the images.
46:51This is the ultimate test of distraction for our braineese.
46:54Not only are they under pressure as they race against the clock, but they have to fight their
46:58dizziness to collect only the five images they saw from the ten hanging above them.
47:03They then have to arrange those images in reverse order.
47:08Every image they get wrong means a five-second penalty.
47:11The braineese with the slowest time will be eliminated from the dojo.
47:16He's got the order spot on, but will he be fast enough to get the brown?
47:20Now daring Dina.
47:24Whoops.
47:25Dina nearly fell over, but she's not letting it put her off.
47:28She did well in the training and looks incredibly focused on her goal.
47:35Don't forget this challenge decides which two braineese will go through to their final round.
47:39Their table of supreme focus.
47:41Another great run and she's got a full house as well.
47:52Can Caitlyn make it a 100% record for the group?
47:57Caitlyn said she wouldn't use the singing tip to memorise the images and decided she'd try repetition instead.
48:04Will this technique see her through to the final for the chance to win the black?
48:11Caitlyn picked the right five images, but can she beat the others to get them in reverse order?
48:22Oodon noodles.
48:23Another perfect round.
48:25With no penalties for any of her final three braineese.
48:28It all hangs on how long they took to complete the course.
48:31Time for the results.
48:33Ryan.
48:3352 seconds.
48:34An excellent time.
48:36Dina.
48:3651.9 seconds.
48:38Unbelievable.
48:39There's just 0.1 of a second between Dina and Ryan.
48:43So Ryan's place hangs on Caitlyn's score.
48:4858 seconds.
48:49Which means Ryan's in and Caitlyn is out.
48:56Walk of eternal regret.
49:00I'm really disappointed that I didn't get to the final round.
49:04I didn't use the singing from the brain training because it didn't really work for me.
49:08I think Dina is going to win the black belt because I think she's a bit of a stronger person.
49:17So with only one level to go, it leaves just charming Ryan and daring Dina to wear the brown brain belts in preparation for the final.
49:24I really thought at the beginning that I wasn't going to win because there were so many other confident people.
49:30I'm really glad that I got through to the last round as well.
49:32So it's one step closer to the black belt.
49:36Brain Jitsu.
49:37Eight young people arrive at Brain Training Dojo to fight for Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt.
49:47As challenges got tougher, brainies got fewer.
49:51Some lack control.
49:53Others just miss out.
49:54But one by one has been eliminated.
49:58Till just two remain.
50:00Daring Dina, riding high after two wins in a row.
50:04I feel really, really great.
50:06I'm really, really happy that I'm in the final.
50:08And charming Ryan, whose understated confidence has worked well so far.
50:13I'm excited and I'm a bit nervous about the last round.
50:17I'm really glad that I got through to the last round as well.
50:19So it's one step closer to the black belt.
50:22But who will use Brain Training to the max to win final challenge?
50:29Level seven.
50:30Black belt.
50:32So this is it.
50:34Between my two remaining brainies and the black belt stands Brain Jitsu's ultimate challenge.
50:40A mental duel that is head to head in every sense.
50:46The battlefield?
50:47A table.
50:48But not just any table.
50:50For this, my friends, is the table of supreme focus.
50:54Where our two brainies will attempt to move a ball across the table using only the power of their mind.
51:02By getting this far, they've already demonstrated mental control under many different types of pressure.
51:07But now, they must learn to focus their minds by entering a state of total calm.
51:14To prepare them, my two finalists will need to get into the zone.
51:19Room of mental nourishment.
51:22Yes!
51:23We welcome Daring Dina and Charming Ryan, our two brown brain belt holders, to the final room of mental nourishment.
51:29For this task, our brainies must bring together all the training they've received so far to achieve ultimate focus.
51:37Brain training.
51:38Mentally prepare yourself for the final task.
51:41Don't let the sound put you off.
51:49Dina seems distracted, but Ryan is focusing well.
51:53You're supposed to be finding your inner calm, Dina, not filling your inner hunger.
52:04How did you find that sound?
52:05I just ignored it. It was quite alright.
52:08Mmm, training tip time.
52:10Tip. Focus on one object in the room.
52:13I'm really determined because we're getting closer to the end, and I really want to run the black belt.
52:23I'm really glad that I got towards the last one. It's one step closer to the black belt.
52:28Do you think you could beat me?
52:31I'm not sure.
52:32I think I'm going to beat you.
52:34Don't get overconfident.
52:35To survive the table of supreme focus and win the black brain belt, our brainies must now put all their training to the test.
52:44Will daring Dina make it three wins in a row?
52:47Or will charming Ryan pip Dina to the post?
52:50Let's find out.
52:53Table of supreme focus.
52:58Rules are simple.
52:59Each brainee must push ball to their opponent's end of table using only power of mind.
53:05Sensors in brainies' headbands measure brainwaves.
53:09This is converted into electrical signal, which moves ball.
53:13More focused mind, stronger signal, and faster ball will travel.
53:18See how brainies are doing on this readout.
53:22Two lines represent each player's brainwaves.
53:24Lower the line, more concentrated their mind.
53:27To make sure this is the test of all tests, our brainies must win the best of three rounds.
53:39So, this is the big one.
53:42If they are to succeed, our two finalists must use all their brain training to enter their zone of absolute focus.
53:49This is the reason they came to the dojo.
53:51This is the moment they've been training for.
54:01The Sheehan starts them off and the mind races on.
54:06Ryan's off to a flying start.
54:09His green brainwave line is straight and low and shows he's got a focused mind.
54:14Dina's looking around and can't seem to find her focus.
54:21So, Ryan has won the first round.
54:23He's achieved maximum focus and will have gained even more confidence from that win.
54:28Daring Dina can't seem to settle and find her centre.
54:31Can she pull it back in the second round to even the score?
54:34Ryan's straight off the starting blocks again and the ball is hurtling towards Dina's end.
54:48His green line is straight and low.
54:51Can Dina find her focus?
54:56That's it! It's all over!
54:58It's a walkover for charming Ryan.
54:59He used his training to the max to prove himself a true master of the mind and worthy winner of the black belt of brain jitsu.
55:07I feel really glad and brilliant.
55:10There's no way to describe it, that I've won the black belt.
55:13In the final task, I felt really relaxed, but Dina, she looked really calm back then.
55:19I thought, don't let that fall on me, so I just didn't think of anything at all.
55:24As ever, glory for one brings disappointment for another.
55:27She fought valiantly, but now Daring Dina must leave the dojo.
55:33Walk of eternal regret.
55:37I'm really, really gutted that I haven't won the black belt, but I'm really happy that I got really far.
55:42I think Ryan was a good winner, and I think he deserves the black belt, because all through the game he was really determined.
55:49So Daring Dina lost focus when it mattered most, but it's triumph for charming Ryan.
55:55He never let his concentration waver.
56:02He was placed first or second throughout his time in the dojo, and stayed totally focused on his goal.
56:09The brain jitsu black brain belt.
56:11I feel great, brilliant, fantastic.
56:20There's nowhere to describe it.
56:22Our journey has come to an end.
56:24Another brainy has proven themselves worthy to wear the brain jitsu black belt.
56:29But while brain jitsu might represent the most extreme form of brain training, its philosophy can be shared by all.
56:39Each and every one of you has it in your power to grow your mind.
56:43All it takes is dedication and practice.
56:47This has been...
56:49Brain Jitsu
56:51Jitsu
