00:00Insects were harmed in the making of this program, and that none of the training you're about to see be attempted unless under expert supervision.
00:07Eight braineers, one challenge. To use complex mass of 100 billion cells, we call the brain, for chance to win Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt.
00:17This is Brain Jitsu.
00:20Born in Lancashire, trained in Japan, with mind sharp as samurai sword, he is Brain Master. He is the Sensei.
00:36Konnichiwa, and welcome to Brain Jitsu. Mental training specially designed to boost brain power and focus.
00:46My trainees, or brainies, have been following a basic program of training in the comfort of their own home.
00:53A brain-boosting routine of exercise, sleep, and enough fruit and veg to stock a greengrocer's.
01:01The training's really helped me, and, well, it just gave me a bit more confidence and stuff.
01:06After you play a computer game, you feel a bit numb, your brain feels a bit numb, but after this, it sort of felt the opposite, but felt a bit more clear.
01:13I really, really, really, really, really, really want that bad bit.
01:16I think I'm going to win, definitely, because, erm, I'm, like, the best out of all of them.
01:23Now, my brainies must put their training into practice by testing the part of the brain we use every day.
01:29Level one.
01:30You're no fault!
01:34Take a look at this fish tank.
01:35How many white fish are there?
01:39Now, did you get two?
01:40Congratulations!
01:43You've just used your occipital lobes.
01:46This area, the same part of our brain, allows us to recognise and separate images from each other.
01:54The seven braineers who use their occipital lobes the best will be allowed to enter my brain jitsu dojo, where their training will continue.
02:02The one who fails will be left outside.
02:05Oh!
02:06Feel the burn.
02:08Enter the dojo!
02:10Our braineers must answer four questions by searching the different team kits on the board in front of them.
02:17Get the questions right, and they'll be left with a four-digit code, which they must then use to unlock a piece of brain and secure their place in the dojo.
02:25But with only seven pieces of brain and eight braineers, one of either Maya, Michael, Zia, Tushaya, Shahad, Sterling, Gwen or Jack will be left outside and eliminated.
02:40You could hear a grain of rice drop as the four questions are revealed.
02:46How many players have blue in their kit?
02:49How many players have blue in their kit?
03:05How many players have red in their kit?
03:13The answer our braineers are looking for is three, six, seven, eight.
03:20Sterling and Maya reckon they've cracked the code already, but have they jumped too soon?
03:30Faster than you can say foam-filled futons, the rest of our braineers join them, all except Tushaya, who's still stuck at the noodle bar.
03:37And it's Zia, who's first to unlock a piece of brain, quickly followed by Michael and Jack.
03:53Don't forget, the code they're braineers they're searching for is three, six, seven, eight, as there are three players with black kit, six with non-matching shorts and shirt, seven with blue in their kit, and eight with red in their kit.
04:07Which means Maya still hasn't got the right code.
04:10Come on, Maya, work those occipital lobes.
04:15At last, Sterling unlocks a piece of brain, with Gwen hot on his heels.
04:21It's now a three-way contest between Tushaya, Maya and Shahad for those final two places in the dojo.
04:30Keeping her coo, confident Shahad clocks open her lock.
04:33With Tushaya now working on the last piece of brain, there's nothing Maya can do but wait for a chance.
04:42But Tushaya's lock springs open, and Maya's last hope of entering the dojo is gone.
04:48So while seven have proved themselves worthy of entering the dojo and continuing their brain training, for Maya, it's the end of the road.
04:59I'm feeling really disappointed that I haven't got into the dojo, because I think I shouldn't have rushed.
05:07I feel gutted.
05:08So, with six levels to go, it's Zia, Michael, Jack, Sterling, Gwen, Shahad and Tushaya, who received the first of their coloured brain belts.
05:19I feel really good. I think the training that I did at home helped me.
05:27I just focused on one thing and came first, and that was quite fun.
05:32I feel really relieved, because that was actually quite hard.
05:35I kept on trying to unlock the padlock, but I just wouldn't undo.
05:38It was a tough challenge. I had to go back at least four times to get the lock undone.
05:43Win it. Come on. Let's win it.
05:45In this next level of training, things are going to get really hard.
05:54Level two.
05:56We do things every day without even thinking about it, like kicking a football.
06:04You try kicking it with the foot you don't normally use.
06:08It's not easy, is it?
06:09If you manage to do that, you're using part of your brain that deals with problem solving, the frontal lobes.
06:19And that's what level two is all about.
06:22Taking something you normally do without thinking and doing it differently.
06:26Work it.
06:28To prepare their frontal lobes for the next challenge, our brainees are going to need some training.
06:32The room of mental nourishment.
06:39This is the room of mental nourishment, where our young hopefuls will train their brains between every task.
06:45While there's nothing to stop our brainees from kicking back and helping themselves to some of the tempting treats on offer,
06:51the more seriously they take their training, the better prepared they'll be for the challenges that lie ahead.
06:56And in level two, that challenge is all about getting their brains to think in a new way.
07:04Take turns to call out the action on your cards.
07:07Everyone must do it only when you say, Sensei says.
07:12So, our brainees are going to be made to think about something, like following simple instructions,
07:18that they'd normally do without thinking.
07:21Sensei says, both palms down.
07:23Well done, Sterling.
07:38Glad to see that someone's paying attention.
07:40That's right, Sean.
07:40You took into those custard cranes.
07:42You've earned them.
07:45Touch left shoulder.
07:50Time for a training tip.
07:51Don't rush.
07:54Pause for two seconds to think before you react.
07:57You see, spending a moment to think before rushing in really can improve your all-round focus.
08:03Sensei says, touch nose with the left hand.
08:07There's no fooling to Shia.
08:09Sensei's look sad.
08:13But Shihad's finding it all a bit of a struggle.
08:16I messed up quite a lot.
08:17I found it hard because I wasn't thinking.
08:20I just did the action straight away.
08:24So, will Shihad remember to stop and think?
08:28And will happy-go-lucky Sterling be able to maintain his impressive focus?
08:33Time to find out, as our seven now put their frontal lobe train into the test.
08:39Guardian of the dojo and task adjudicator, the Shihan, will now demonstrate the level two challenge.
08:45Each brainy must pick two balls by calling out pair of coordinates from grid.
08:55For example, B2 and D3.
08:59Aim is to find two balls of same color, matching not word on each ball, but color that word is written in.
09:07So, in this case, they will have to remember that this ball was red and this one blue.
09:12If brainy's uncover match, they will progress to next level.
09:16Last brainy to find pair will be eliminated.
09:20My brainy tip for this task is to focus the mind on just one letter and not the whole word.
09:26What's important here is not the word, but the color that it's written in.
09:30Here are those colors now.
09:38Three, two, one.
09:41It's go on the gong.
09:44A one.
09:44Remember, our brainy's must ignore the word and focus only on the color it's written in,
09:50which means Zia's now looking for another green ball.
09:53Instead, he finds orange.
09:55Will he remember for the next time?
10:01A three.
10:06Um, A one.
10:08Michael seems to have forgotten that Zia has only just picked A one,
10:12and that it most definitely wasn't black.
10:14It's a bad start for the boys, as Jack also misses out on a pair.
10:20It looks as though they've completely forgotten the training.
10:23Can happy-go-lucky Sterling restore some male pride?
10:27One C.
10:31And four B.
10:37Great balls of focus.
10:39Sterling finds the first pair, despite all those custard creams.
10:44It's now Gwen's turn.
10:47A two.
10:48Will she remember her training and get her brain focusing just on those colors?
10:53A three.
10:57Gwen nails it.
10:58And just look at the pressure beginning to show on Shahad.
11:02C two.
11:06D three.
11:07With confident Shahad drawing a blank, it's now Tushaya's turn.
11:15C three.
11:16Will she remember her training and keep that brain in reverse gear?
11:20A one.
11:24With two green balls in the bag, Tushaya becomes the third brainy to advance to the next level.
11:31B one.
11:31C four.
11:38And there are no problems either this time for Michael...
11:43...or Shahad, who also go through.
11:47Leaving Zia and Jack to fight it out for the last remaining orange belt.
11:52With just four balls to choose from, it's Zia to pick next.
11:55C two.
11:56B three.
12:06But yet again, Zia can't get his head round this back-to-front thinking lark, leaving the door wide open for Jack.
12:13B two.
12:17B three.
12:18Suffering sumos.
12:24With the next level at his mercy, Jack gets his brain in a right-all twist.
12:29Will Zia grab this second chance?
12:32B three.
12:34B four.
12:39He does, bringing Jack's journey to mental mastery to an abrupt end.
12:43There's nothing for it but to hand over his yellow brain belt, and leave the door jaw.
12:53Walk of eternal regret.
12:57The training beforehand helped.
13:00I think I got a bit distracted at the end, because it was very tense and it was confusing.
13:04Oh well.
13:06Hope the others enjoy it.
13:08I'm out.
13:10So, with five levels left, it's Zia, Michael, Sterling, Gwen, Shahad and Tushaya, who get their orange brain belts.
13:19I feel really happy because I just went for it and I got it.
13:22The training helped me because it helped me to concentrate on what I was saying and what I was doing.
13:27I'm relieved, but I sort of hope that I can do better in the next task.
13:32Brainy, not so brainy.
13:43Who's the clever clogs and whose brain needs a lot more training?
13:47It's the 1870s and a geezer called Alexander Graham Bell goes and impents the old dog and bone, or telephone,
13:53so you and I can gossip, gasp and natter to people all over the world.
13:58Telephone-tastic.
13:58Hello?
13:59Mum, I'm on the telly.
14:01I'll call you back.
14:01Where was I?
14:02Oh yeah, phones.
14:03Off to Finland.
14:04Every year, a load of Finns and folks from all over the world take part in the Mobile Phone Throwing World Championships.
14:10Why?
14:11Well, to see how far they can throw them, of course.
14:13Right, got to ring the old dear back.
14:15Brainy, Alexander Graham Bell.
14:17Not so brainy, phone flingers in Finland.
14:22Brainy.
14:22Brainy Jitsu.
14:23Competition in Brainy Jitsu dojo hotting up.
14:27Only six brainy remain to battle out under watchful eye of Sheehan.
14:32Zia, first into dojo and nearly first out.
14:36Wen, who perform well in each level.
14:40Confident Shahad.
14:41I think I'm going to win, definitely.
14:43Nice cool Michael.
14:44I really, really, really, really, really want that Batman.
14:46I feel really happy because I just went for it and I got it.
14:55The challenge is about to get even tougher.
14:58Only two brainy will make through to final test.
15:01Table of Supreme Focus.
15:03Where must move ball with power of mind for chance to win.
15:07Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt.
15:10It's time for...
15:12Level 3.
15:13Weaselt.
15:14Now, we all like to chat.
15:17But did you know that using words to communicate
15:20is one of the main reasons why our brains have grown so incredibly powerful?
15:25And that having a conversation exercises both halves of the brain.
15:29Now, if all that's doing, you're heading.
15:32Allow me to explain.
15:34Think of it like air traffic control.
15:36While a pilot has to focus on landing just one plane,
15:40an air traffic controller is responsible for landing all sorts of planes.
15:45It's the same with the brain.
15:47There's the left half, which deals with the details,
15:50and there's the right half, which looks at the overall picture.
15:53This next level of training strengthens my brainy's focus
15:57by working one half of their brain under pressure.
16:01Hey, pump it up!
16:02The Room of Mental Nourishment.
16:07It's our brainy's second visit to the Room of Mental Nourishment,
16:10where once again they'll train their brains in preparation for the next challenge.
16:15Now, remember, it's all about using the two halves of the brain to communicate.
16:18Brain training.
16:22Get into two groups.
16:24One brainy describes how the blocks fit together.
16:27The other group puts them together.
16:29So, for this training session, our brainy's are in two teams,
16:33but have to work as one.
16:35The key is to communicate clearly.
16:37Talk one at a time and listen to each other.
16:39As the team explaining how to put the blocks together,
16:51the girls seem more focused on shouting over each other,
16:54rather than making themselves clearly understood.
16:59Oh, this is more like cat karaoke than communication.
17:03Time for a training tip.
17:07Use short, clear instructions.
17:09Imagine yourself hearing them.
17:11And don't all speak at the same time.
17:14Our brainy's begin again.
17:16And this time, at least the girls are now speaking one at a time.
17:19There's a blue four-long one, yeah?
17:22Yeah.
17:22And there's a red four-long one.
17:24Yeah.
17:25Put them next to each other.
17:26So there's eight in a row?
17:28But their message still isn't getting across.
17:30Whatever girls need to do is imagine what information the boys need,
17:34because getting the most out of the right side of the brain
17:37means putting yourself in someone else's shoes.
17:39This is a red square.
17:41Try practising this next time you have a conversation with a friend,
17:44in the knowledge that your brain will be getting a good workout.
17:48Then on the other side, there's another blue four.
17:51Yeah.
17:51Do that on the other side.
17:53Yes.
17:54Put it on top of the green one.
17:55Directly on top of it.
17:56Yeah.
17:57At last, there were two teams are making progress,
18:00and the boys' blocks are now looking much more like the girls.
18:03We didn't do it right the first time,
18:05because everyone was just screaming stuff out,
18:07and the boys didn't know who was saying which part.
18:10After we had the tip, I think they did very well,
18:12and I think we did very well.
18:13They listened to us when we told them where should it go,
18:19and they managed to explain it so that we could understand as well.
18:22So, will our brainies remember that communication is all about clarity?
18:27Or will they forget all that they've learnt?
18:30Time to find out,
18:32as they now put their train into the test
18:34for those five green brain belts.
18:39Balloon pop number drop!
18:41This is test of communication skill.
18:45So, six brainy must first divide into teams of two
18:48by drawing chopsticks.
18:56Quickly as possible,
18:58teams must burst six balloon containing number
19:01which go together to form some.
19:03Pairs need to decide who is Guider,
19:05who is Popper.
19:07With Popper unable to see under helmet,
19:09they will be relying on Guider
19:11to help them burst balloon.
19:14When all balloon popped,
19:17brainies stop clock by shouting,
19:19RENJITZU!
19:20Quicker they burst balloon,
19:22more time have to pick up number
19:24and make some.
19:26Once brainy are happy with answer,
19:28hit the gong!
19:30First two teams to work out correct answer
19:32get green belts
19:33and advance to next level.
19:35One brainy from losing team
19:37will be eliminated.
19:40The key to success here
19:42is for the Guider
19:43to use the right side of their brain
19:45to follow their teammates' progress
19:47and give them clear instructions.
19:49For their partner,
19:51it's vital
19:51they use the left side of their brain
19:54to focus on these instructions
19:56and nothing else.
19:59First to put their communication training to the test
20:01are Shahad and Zia.
20:04Jump.
20:06Now what?
20:07Now go forward two steps,
20:09pretty small steps.
20:11Confident as ever,
20:12Shahad takes control,
20:13using the right side of her brain well.
20:15To the left,
20:16now jump.
20:18One more.
20:19Jump.
20:21Brain jitsu!
20:22Their last balloon popped,
20:23Shahad stops the clock
20:24at 1 minute 31 seconds.
20:27It looks like her training has paid off.
20:29It's now Gwen and Sterling's turn.
20:34Both performed well in their training
20:36and like Shahad before her,
20:38it's Gwen who's doing the guiding.
20:42Go forward.
20:43Jump.
20:44Back a bit.
20:45Jump.
20:48Left.
20:49Jump.
20:50Brain jitsu.
20:53Popping all their balloons
20:55in just 1 minute 14 seconds,
20:57it's an impressive display of communication
20:59from the duo.
21:00Last to pop are Tushaya and Michael.
21:03And walk forwards.
21:05And like the other girls,
21:06it's Tushaya who's using the right side of her brain
21:09to guide her partner.
21:10Right.
21:11Back.
21:12Jump.
21:14Forwards.
21:15Jump.
21:17Back.
21:18Jump.
21:19As speedy as a samurai on skates,
21:22Tushaya and Michael
21:23pop their sixth and last balloon
21:25in an incredible 1 minute and 2 seconds.
21:30As the fastest team,
21:31it's Tushaya and Michael
21:33who set off first to find their numbers.
21:41That's 4.
21:42Here.
21:42Here's what our braineese are looking for.
21:44See if you can work out the sum.
21:47Take away.
21:47We don't have to take away.
21:48Remember,
21:49the first two teams to work it out
21:51will go through to the next level.
21:57It's Gwen and Sterling
21:59who are quickest to their gong,
22:00just ahead of Tushaya and Michael,
22:02with Shahad and Zia
22:03bringing up the rear.
22:068 times 2 minus 11 equals 5.
22:09That looks good to me.
22:10More importantly,
22:11the Sheehan agrees.
22:12Yes.
22:15In fact,
22:16all three teams
22:17have found the correct solution.
22:19So,
22:19as the last to finish,
22:21it's Shahad and Zia
22:22who will be battling it out
22:23to avoid elimination
22:24in the...
22:27Step off.
22:30With just one green belt up for grabs,
22:32both braineese must use
22:33all their powers of focus
22:35to fight the urge to blink.
22:36The first to falter
22:37will be eliminated.
22:38As wide-eyed as a pair
22:42of manga cartoons,
22:43our two braineese
22:44are refusing to give way.
22:47But eventually,
22:48it's Zia
22:49who can fight the urge
22:49no longer.
22:52While confident Shahad's
22:53staring skills
22:54have brought her
22:55a step closer
22:56to that elusive black belt,
22:57the only thing
22:58Zia is now staring at
22:59is elimination.
23:03Walk of eternal regret.
23:06I thought we did all right
23:08after we popped the balloon,
23:11but then we saw
23:11the other people go
23:12a lot faster.
23:13I thought we could still win
23:15if we managed to get
23:15the numbers quickly enough.
23:17I'm not usually
23:18very good at stare-ups,
23:19I usually blink a lot,
23:20so...
23:21Um...
23:223-1.
23:24So,
23:25with four levels to go,
23:26it's Michael,
23:27Sterling,
23:28Gwen,
23:29Shahad,
23:29and Tushaya
23:30who line up
23:31for their green belts.
23:32Working with Sterling
23:33was actually quite...
23:34It was easier
23:35than I thought it would be.
23:36He was really fast
23:38and he listened really well.
23:39Gwen was giving me
23:40excellent instructions,
23:42but when I was jumping
23:43it just didn't pop,
23:44so I was just like
23:44bouncing it up and down
23:45and it wouldn't pop.
23:46When we went to the stare-off,
23:48that was the moment
23:49when I really started
23:50to doubt myself.
23:51I was like,
23:51I'm not going to win.
23:52this fourth level
24:02requires our brainies
24:04to master
24:05a primitive part
24:05of the brain
24:06called the amygdala,
24:08the area
24:09that responds
24:09to threat.
24:10Remember the last time
24:16you felt afraid
24:16or panicky?
24:17Maybe you were just
24:18about to sit an exam.
24:20Well,
24:20that feeling
24:21was triggered
24:22by the old amygdala.
24:24Now,
24:24stress
24:25can make you
24:26lose focus.
24:27Fact.
24:28Which is why
24:29my brainies
24:30must train
24:30to keep their emotions
24:32under control.
24:33The Room
24:34of Mental
24:36Nourishment.
24:37Back in the Room
24:38of Mental Nourishment,
24:39it's time
24:40for our five brainies
24:41to train
24:42in how to overcome
24:43fear and stay focused.
24:46Form a circle.
24:47Pass the disgusting
24:48drink around
24:50the circle,
24:51only passing it on
24:52when you have said
24:53the name of a different animal.
24:55After one minute,
24:56the brainy
24:57holding the drink
24:58has to drink it.
25:00Oh, no.
25:01So,
25:02our brainies
25:02must block out
25:03the fact
25:04that they might
25:04get a mouthful
25:05of seaweed
25:05and concentrate
25:06only on coming
25:08up with the name
25:08of an animal.
25:10Yeah,
25:10it's strawberry jelly.
25:11Oh, my God.
25:13It's time to train.
25:15Tiger.
25:18Chinchilla.
25:20Monkey.
25:23Giraffe.
25:24Parrot.
25:27Um,
25:28dog.
25:29Um,
25:30and,
25:31uh,
25:31uh,
25:31uh.
25:31As the clock ticks down,
25:33our brainies
25:34are beginning
25:34to hesitate.
25:36Leopard.
25:37Mice.
25:38Um,
25:39worm.
25:42The minute's up
25:42and it's Shahad
25:43who's left
25:44holding the drink.
25:45Come on,
25:45Shahad,
25:45down the hatch.
25:46Okay.
25:50Ah,
25:51time for a tip.
25:55Concentrate.
25:56Try to blank out
25:57the time and fear
25:58of the drink
25:58to avoid panicking.
26:00Stingrove.
26:02Mouse.
26:02Rat.
26:04Cat.
26:05The tip's still fresh
26:06in our minds.
26:06Our brainies are making
26:07a much better fist
26:08of things,
26:09calling out one animal
26:10after another.
26:11Mouse.
26:13Platypus.
26:14Goldfish.
26:15Centipede.
26:17Millipede.
26:17Next time you're
26:18feeling the pressure,
26:19say,
26:19in the middle of a test,
26:21try not to worry
26:22about the time.
26:23The chances are
26:24you'll stay
26:24much more focused.
26:27One.
26:28Tony foo.
26:30The gong sounds
26:32for a second time
26:33and it's Michael
26:34who's left
26:34holding the drink
26:35of stink.
26:36It's really nice,
26:36isn't it?
26:37Three,
26:38two,
26:39one.
26:40Ah,
26:41you're horrible.
26:42He actually likes it.
26:43But as cool
26:44as a cucumber
26:45in a cold store,
26:46Michael knocks it back.
26:47Horrible.
26:48Well, this makes me
26:48feel.
26:49He didn't actually
26:50think
26:51before you said
26:52something,
26:52you just wanted
26:53to say something
26:54really quickly
26:54so you just
26:55passed the drink on.
26:56No, it's fine.
26:57It's only seaweed.
26:58The tip was
26:59a really good advice
27:00and gain confidence.
27:01I think probably
27:02the next task
27:03is going to be
27:04something to do
27:04with disgusting things
27:06or eating something
27:07but I just,
27:08I guess,
27:09I just got to win
27:10that black belt
27:10so I've got to do it.
27:12So,
27:13will Shahad
27:13ever get over
27:14the test of that seaweed?
27:16Will ice-cool Michael
27:17be just as calm
27:18when he re-enters
27:19the dojo?
27:19And will happy-go-lucky
27:21Sterling
27:22take another step
27:23towards that black belt?
27:25It's time to find out
27:26as our five
27:27put their brain train
27:28into the test
27:29in a fear-filled challenge
27:30that will decide
27:31who gets their
27:32blue brain belt.
27:36Creepy Crawly
27:37word grab.
27:38This level
27:39real test of mind
27:41over matter
27:41for brainees
27:42and will push them
27:43to really overcome
27:44their fear.
27:45Underneath the creepy crawlies
27:46lie an assortment
27:48of letters
27:48worth different points.
27:50Brainees have
27:50just one minute
27:51to plunge hands
27:52into tank
27:53and pick out
27:54up to seven letters
27:55each.
27:56They then have
27:56a further minute
27:57to make higher scoring
27:59words they can.
28:02To do well,
28:03my brainees
28:04must block out
28:05the signals
28:05coming from their amygdala
28:07and ignore
28:07the creepy crawlies.
28:09The quicker
28:10they combat
28:10their fear,
28:11the more time
28:12they'll have
28:12to pick out
28:13the high-scoring letters.
28:14Underneath this pile
28:26of yucky worms
28:27are an extra
28:28five golden letters.
28:29If our brainees
28:30manage to use one
28:31in their word
28:32they'll double their score.
28:37Our brainees
28:38dive straight in
28:39but Tushaya
28:40seems more intense
28:41on flapping her arms
28:42about in the air
28:43than hunting
28:43for any letters.
28:44Completely forgetting
28:45her training.
28:47Michael, on the other
28:48hand, seems to be
28:49calmly going about
28:50his business
28:51just as he did
28:52during his training.
28:54Sterling's tactic
28:55appears to involve
28:56barging Gwen
28:57out in the way.
28:58I'm not sure
28:58that's in the rule book.
29:02And if Shahad's
29:03feeling anxious
29:04then she's certainly
29:05not showing it.
29:06The minute's up.
29:14Our brainees
29:15now have a further
29:16minute to make
29:17the highest scoring
29:18word they can
29:18from their letters.
29:23Sterling has found
29:24one of the golden letters
29:25but will he be able
29:26to use it
29:27and double his score?
29:29Gwen has also
29:30grabbed herself
29:30a golden letter
29:31but not a lot
29:32else by the
29:32looks of things.
29:34See if you
29:35can make a word
29:36from the anagram
29:36on the screen
29:37now.
29:45There's the second
29:46gong.
29:47How have our brainees
29:48done?
29:51Heath.
29:53With a golden
29:53E in his word
29:55that's a big fat
29:5616 points
29:56for high school
29:57Michael.
29:58Spade.
29:59It's also
30:00double bubble
30:01for Sterling
30:01who scores 10.
30:05No word.
30:07Gwen appears
30:07to have lost
30:08half her letter
30:09since the first
30:09gong
30:10and with no word
30:11scores a big fat
30:12zero.
30:13Bait.
30:15A quick check
30:16in the dictionary
30:16and it's 6 points
30:18for confident
30:18Shahad.
30:22Teen.
30:23No doubts
30:24about Tushaya's
30:25word which
30:26earns her
30:2610 points.
30:28And so
30:29as the only
30:30brainy
30:30not to make
30:31a word
30:31it's Gwen
30:32who must
30:32leave the
30:33dojo.
30:40Walk of
30:41eternal
30:42regret.
30:44Yeah I am
30:44quite gutted
30:45but it was a
30:46really good
30:47experience doing
30:47all the training
30:48and I think
30:49it will help
30:50me in other
30:51challenges.
30:53I think
30:53Shahad's a
30:54strong contender
30:55because she
30:55really prepared
30:57herself and
30:57also she's quite
30:58confident and
30:59brave.
31:02So with only
31:03three levels left
31:04those who use
31:05their minds to
31:06master the worms
31:06are rewarded
31:07with blue brain
31:08belts.
31:09When they
31:10bought the worms
31:10I was just
31:12terrified.
31:13I was just
31:14ugh.
31:15It was funny
31:15watching everyone
31:16else panic
31:17because they
31:19didn't like the
31:19worms.
31:19because they're
31:21a bit squeamish.
31:23Brain
31:24T2.
31:27Brainy
31:27not so
31:28brainy.
31:30Who's the
31:31clever clogs
31:32and whose brain
31:32needs a lot more
31:33training?
31:34Picture the scene
31:35it's 1666
31:36and this young
31:37chap Isaac Newton
31:39is catching 40
31:40winks in his
31:40orchard when
31:41wallop an apple
31:42hits him right
31:43on the nut.
31:44But Isaac doesn't
31:45just yelp and
31:46rub the large
31:47bump on his
31:47curly head.
31:48He only goes and
31:49discovers the force
31:50that keeps our
31:50feet on the
31:51ground and the
31:51earth in orbit
31:52around the sun.
31:53Namely, gravity.
31:54Apple-tastic.
31:56Back in ancient
31:57Greece, another
31:58young lad called
31:59Icarus is banged
32:00up in prison after
32:01doing something
32:01naughty.
32:02So he decides to
32:03escape by making
32:03a pair of giant
32:04wings from feathers
32:05and wax and then
32:06flying out the
32:07window.
32:08But in his
32:08excitement, this
32:09bird brain goes
32:10and flies too near
32:11the sun, thus
32:12melting the wings
32:13and dropping like
32:14ice down into
32:15the drink.
32:15Oh dear, oh dear.
32:17Brainy, Isaac
32:18Newton.
32:18Not so brainy,
32:19Icarus, Thickerus.
32:22Brain-jitsu.
32:24Tension in
32:25brain-jitsu dojo
32:26mounting.
32:27Just four young
32:28hopeful remain
32:29to compete under
32:30watchful eye of
32:31Sheehan.
32:32Confident Shehad.
32:34High school
32:34Michael, winner
32:35of last challenge.
32:36It was funny
32:37watching everyone
32:37else panic.
32:38Too shy, she
32:39not like worm.
32:41And happy
32:41good lucky
32:42sterling.
32:43I just got to
32:44win that black belt
32:44so I've got to do
32:45it.
32:46Only two brainy
32:47will make final
32:47showdown.
32:48Table of supreme
32:49focus.
32:50We must move
32:51ball with power
32:52of mind.
32:53Brain-jitsu
32:53black brain belt
32:54is within the
32:55ground.
32:56It is time for...
32:58Level five.
33:00Red belt.
33:02Now, if you're
33:03learning to climb
33:04trees like
33:05Tarzan, then
33:06you might be
33:06interested to know
33:07that your new
33:08hobby is doing
33:08wonders for the
33:09old grey matter.
33:10exercising both
33:12the thinking
33:13part of the
33:13brain, the
33:14cerebrum, and
33:15the doing
33:16part, the
33:17cerebellum.
33:18You see, doing
33:19new things
33:20increases the
33:20flow of blood
33:21into your head,
33:22which keeps
33:23your brain
33:24cells topped
33:24up with the
33:25oxygen they
33:26need to perform
33:27at their best.
33:28So, in level
33:29five, my
33:30brainees are
33:31going to be
33:31challenged to
33:32learn new
33:32skills.
33:33Now, you can
33:34speed up how
33:35quickly the
33:36brain takes in
33:37new stuff.
33:37And this is
33:38what our
33:39brainees are
33:40going to train
33:40for now.
33:42The room of
33:43mental nourishment.
33:46It's our
33:46brainees' fourth
33:47visit to the
33:48room of mental
33:49nourishment, where
33:50they'll be
33:50training their
33:50brains in how
33:51to learn new
33:52skills.
33:55Happy-go-lucky
33:56Sterling reads
33:57out the card.
33:59Brain training.
34:01Flip and catch
34:02as many drinks
34:04coasters as
34:05you can.
34:06It's going to
34:06be hard.
34:07No way.
34:09We'll see.
34:18While most of
34:19our brainees are
34:20finding this new
34:20skill harder to
34:21master than the
34:22Japanese alphabet,
34:23Sterling's a
34:24natural.
34:26Oh, yes!
34:27I've got the
34:27hang of it.
34:29Now, let's try
34:29four.
34:30Now, I'm
34:31going to
34:31make you try.
34:31Keep them
34:32together.
34:33Next.
34:34Catch you
34:34two hands.
34:35I'm going to
34:36do six.
34:37With the rest of
34:43our brainees still
34:44struggling, it's
34:44time for a training
34:45tip.
34:46I can do five.
34:48Approach this
34:49positively.
34:50Laugh out loud for
34:5130 seconds.
34:52How's that going to
34:53help?
34:53Well, Shahad, you're
34:54about to find out.
34:55Cue the laughter
34:56tape.
34:57The next time you
35:02face a tough mental
35:03challenge, you try
35:04laughing as well.
35:06It might sound
35:06strange, but a fit of
35:07the giggles actually
35:09increases our heart
35:10rate, which sends
35:11extra oxygen into the
35:12brain, helping it to
35:14perform at its best.
35:16Let's see if it's
35:17worked.
35:17Tushaya immediately
35:20flips a good'un.
35:21Michael also seems to
35:23be finding his
35:24training useful.
35:26Sterling, though,
35:27having already shown
35:27his flair for
35:28flipping, decides that
35:29his brain doesn't need
35:31any more training and
35:32helps himself to
35:33attempting jelly
35:33bean.
35:34What, you're too
35:35good for this game?
35:36Yeah.
35:37Obviously.
35:37It was hard when
35:41we were all, we
35:42can't do it and
35:42it's too hard, but
35:43then when we were
35:44all positive, yeah
35:46exactly, it made it
35:47more fun, so it
35:48made us more
35:49determined.
35:51I think approaching
35:52tasks with a happy
35:52mind really helps
35:54because there's no
35:54such word as con in
35:56your vocabulary when
35:57you're happy, so you
35:58feel like it's fun to
35:59do it even if it's
36:00really hard.
36:02So, will buddies
36:03to Shia and Shahad be
36:04laughing their way
36:05through to the next
36:06level?
36:06Will high school
36:08Michael still think
36:09his training useful?
36:10And will happy-go
36:11lucky Sterling live
36:12to regret swapping
36:13his training for
36:14them jelly beans?
36:16Only time will tell
36:18as our four now put
36:19their new skills
36:20training to the test
36:21to compete for
36:23their red brain
36:23belts.
36:27Crazy brain buzz
36:29wire.
36:30To win red belt,
36:31brainy must guide
36:32hoop on helmet from
36:33one end of wire to
36:35other.
36:35is race against clock,
36:37but brainy must take
36:38care.
36:39If they touch wire,
36:41not only do they
36:42collect five-second
36:43penalty, they also
36:44receive brain buzz from
36:46rat-baiting helmet.
36:47Most funny.
36:48Brainy with slowest
36:49time will be eliminated.
36:51The tip for my brainy's in this
36:54next task is to remain calm and
36:57think positive thoughts.
36:59Giving in to frustration will
37:01only lessen their focus and
37:03slow them up.
37:04So, will our brainy's remember
37:06the training and stay positive,
37:08or will the pressure get to
37:10them?
37:10First off is cool, calm
37:14Michael, the brainy who
37:16found the training most
37:17helpful.
37:19But while Michael's avoiding
37:21contact with the wire,
37:22is his steady approach
37:24costing him time?
37:25BIRDS CHIRPING
37:27BIRDS CHIRPING
37:28BIRDS CHIRPING
37:29BIRDS CHIRPING
37:30Sterling opted out of his
37:49training halfway through,
37:50so how will he cope with
37:51this new skill?
37:58Using some nifty footwork to
37:59keep himself steady, the
38:01answer appears to be very
38:02well.
38:06Like a bullet train in a
38:08hurry, Sterling makes light
38:09work of the task.
38:15It's now the girl's turn.
38:17Neither seemed as positive as
38:18the boys in their training.
38:20How will this affect their
38:21performance?
38:28Making more contact with
38:29a pair of sumo wrestlers,
38:31Shahad seems oblivious to the
38:32penalty she's racking up.
38:35While her cerebrum is telling
38:37her to go fast, her
38:38cerebellum clearly can't keep
38:39up.
38:40BIRDS CHIRPING
38:40After a nervous start, Tushaya
39:00eventually gets into the groove,
39:02finding a good balance between
39:03speed and accuracy.
39:04So, which of her brainies has found
39:18this a brain challenge too far?
39:20Despite finishing in one minute
39:21seven seconds, Michael picked up
39:23nine penalties, giving him a total
39:25time of two minutes and fifty-two
39:27seconds.
39:28With just four penalties, Sterling's
39:30total time was one minute sixteen.
39:32Yes!
39:34With a whopping twenty-one penalties,
39:37Shahad's total time was two minutes
39:39thirty-five seconds.
39:40And with eleven penalties, Tushaya's
39:43total time was one minute forty-seven
39:45seconds.
39:46So, despite swapping his training for
39:48all those jelly beans, it's Sterling's
39:50brain that has kept its focus the best.
39:52For Michael, though, it's a sad sayonara
39:56as he exits the dojo.
39:58Walk of eternal regret.
40:05I did find that last task quite difficult.
40:10It was difficult to translate what my
40:12brain wanted me to do into the
40:15actions.
40:17I did practice as much as possible,
40:19but I wasn't expecting that specific task.
40:22So, with two levels to go, that now leaves
40:25just Sterling, Shahad, and Tushaya to
40:28receive their red brain belt.
40:31Oh, yes.
40:32Oh, yes.
40:33Oh, yes.
40:34I'm really, really, really happy that I got
40:37in, because I wasn't sure if I was going to
40:39get through or not.
40:40So, I'm really relieved.
40:42But I do feel sorry for Michael.
40:43But, I think he was my best competitor.
40:47When Sheehan went up to him, she said
40:50that he's gone, I was just so shocked.
40:52I was just like, wow.
40:55Brain Jitsu.
40:59Level six.
41:01Roll boat.
41:03In level six, my brainies will draw on
41:06all they've learnt so far in their toughest
41:08test of focus yet.
41:10That's because it's this level which will
41:12decide which two of my remaining
41:15brainies will go on to battle it out
41:17for the black belt.
41:20Now, imagine you're performing a magic trick.
41:24You've got all the secret little moves
41:26to remember, and there's an audience
41:28watching you.
41:29It's remembering stuff like this under
41:31pressure that level six is all about.
41:35It centres around three areas of the brain.
41:38The seeing part, the occipital lobes,
41:40the memory part, the temporal lobes,
41:44and the movement part, the cerebellum.
41:47To the max.
41:50Room of mental nourishment.
41:52Our brainies are back in the room of mental
42:01nourishment, this time for some memory
42:03training.
42:05Memorise the sequence of colours.
42:08Which colour goes away?
42:08I bet you, I bet you the next class is going to be
42:11something to do with memorising.
42:12Oh, eight is as sharp as a samurai sword,
42:15is that sterling?
42:16I'm good with memory.
42:17I'm not.
42:18Come on, Tushaya, stay positive.
42:20Purple, orange, silver, red, green, pink,
42:26yellow, pink, blue, green.
42:30Okay.
42:30Purple, orange, silver, red, orange, no, green.
42:36Okay, Tushaya, I see what you mean.
42:39Purple, orange, silver, yellow, no, red.
42:44It looks like Sterling's memory is not up to much
42:46either.
42:46Time for a training tip.
42:47Create a song linking the colours together.
42:54Okay.
42:55Purple, orange, red and yellow and pink and green.
43:00Yeah, we can do it.
43:01Red and yellow and green, pink and silver.
43:04It may not be Mozart, but is our brainies song
43:08helping them to remember the sequence any better?
43:10Red and yellow and green, pink.
43:12Orange, purple, green, purple, purple, silver and blue.
43:17No!
43:18Pink and blue.
43:19As far as the girls are concerned, the answer is definitely no.
43:22What about Sterling, though?
43:24Look at it.
43:26Orange, green, purple, pink and blue.
43:29Red and yellow and green, pink and silver.
43:33Oh, oh, oh.
43:35Well done, Sterling, top banana.
43:38Memory training like this isn't just great for the brain,
43:41it's also very useful.
43:43Try turning your school timetable into a song
43:45and see if you can remember every class.
43:48I think I have quite a good memory
43:50and I think the song definitely helped.
43:53I'm quite nervous after that because we didn't get it very well.
44:00I'm going to probably be hopeless.
44:03So, will Shahad and Tushaya be able to pick themselves up
44:06in time for the next challenge?
44:09Or will happy-go-lucky Sterling's mastery of memory prove too much?
44:14It's time to find out as our three red belt holders
44:17put their training to the test.
44:19Super Memory Dizzy Dash
44:24Each brainy is spinning round on Dizzy Wheel
44:28a total of ten times.
44:30Task is to use all power of focus
44:33to memorize five images in front of them.
44:36Then, race against clocks to cross-balancing beam
44:39and collect same five images from ten hanging above them.
44:45Then, must arrange pictures in ascending order
44:48based on number of legs on each image.
44:52When brainy happy with selection
44:54hit GONG to top clock.
44:56My tip for the brainy's is to keep focused on the main objective
45:04and use their training to link the five images together.
45:09So, our final three brave the wheel
45:12to compete for their brown brain belt
45:14and the chance of a place at the table of supreme focus.
45:18It's time to spin.
45:19Will their memory training help our brainy's to remember the images
45:23and ignore the effects of being spun round like termites in a tornado?
45:27The order they are looking for is at the bottom of the screen.
45:35Sterling wobbles off in search of those images
45:37and his fourth task win.
45:39Don't forget our brainy's must fight their dizziness
45:42and remember the five images they saw on the wheel
45:44arranging them in order of the number of legs on each.
45:48For every one they get wrong
45:50it's a five second penalty.
45:51The brainy with the slowest time
45:53will be eliminated from the dojo.
45:55Here's the right order again
45:57and that looks like a full house for Sterling.
46:05Confident Shahad is next to step off the dizzy wheel.
46:09Can she use her training to remember those images?
46:11No, by the looks of things
46:15Shahad has just discarded one of the pictures she'll need.
46:22Luckily, she realises a mistake
46:24and goes back to retrieve it.
46:34That looks like five out of five
46:36but has her lapse in focus cost her valuable time.
46:39Last but not least is Tushaya.
46:44Oops, steady there.
46:46It's not a good start from Tushaya
46:48who's mistaken the horse for the donkey.
46:50Easily done.
46:56Tushaya, there are five cards to remember.
46:58Remember.
47:02Chop, chop, Tushaya.
47:03This is against the clock.
47:04Don't recognise him.
47:20Finally, Tushaya bangs her gong
47:22but is she fast enough to secure her place in the final?
47:26Let's find out.
47:26With no penalties,
47:30Sterling finished in one minute and ten seconds.
47:33With no penalties either,
47:35Shahad finished in one minute seven seconds.
47:38Tushaya picked up one penalty
47:40giving her a total time of one minute twenty-two
47:42which means it's Tushaya
47:44who must hand over her brain belt
47:46and leave the dojo.
47:48The training I did before
47:58did help me because I'm really good at training.
48:01I'm a bit disappointed
48:02because I wanted to go to the final.
48:04If I had got to the table of supreme focus
48:06I think I might have won.
48:08So with just one level to go
48:10that only leaves happy-go-lucky Sterling
48:12and confident Shahad
48:13to don their brown brain belt
48:15and prepare for the final showdown.
48:18I'm in the final.
48:21I'm in the final.
48:23I'm really happy that I got in the final
48:25and that was definitely,
48:27almost definitely, my favourite task
48:29and hopefully I can just make it
48:32and get the black belt.
48:33I'm almost there.
48:34I'm really nervous about the table of supreme focus
48:37because I've heard that you have to control
48:40the ball with your mind.
48:42I just really want to win
48:44and if I don't
48:46then I think I've left myself
48:48half done.
48:50Brain Jitsu
48:51Eight young hopefuls arrived
48:55at Brain Training Dojo
48:57to fight it out
48:58for Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt.
49:01As training got tougher
49:02so brainies fell by wayside.
49:05Some lacked focus.
49:07Others, speed.
49:09Now just two remain.
49:11Confident Shahad
49:11who gets stronger
49:13with each passing level.
49:14I think I'm going to win, definitely.
49:15And happy-go-lucky Sterling
49:18winner of three levels so far.
49:21I'm in the final.
49:22I'm in the final.
49:24But who will use Brain Training to max
49:26to win this last challenge?
49:30Level seven.
49:31Black Belt.
49:32So, this is it.
49:35Between my two remaining brainies
49:37and the Black Belt
49:39stands Brain Jitsu's ultimate challenge.
49:42A mental duel
49:43that is head-to-head
49:45in every sense.
49:47The battlefield?
49:48A table.
49:49But not just any table.
49:51For this, my friends,
49:52is the table of supreme focus.
49:55Where our two brainies
49:56will attempt to move a ball
49:57across the table
49:58using only
50:00the power of their mind.
50:02By getting this far,
50:04they've already demonstrated
50:05mental control
50:06under many different types of pressure.
50:09But now,
50:10they must learn to focus their minds
50:11by entering a state
50:13of total calm.
50:15To prepare them,
50:16my two finalists
50:17will need to get into
50:18the zone.
50:19The Room of Mental Nourishment.
50:24In this,
50:25their final visit
50:26to the Room of Mental Nourishment,
50:28our last two brainies
50:29are about to train
50:30in how to stay focused
50:32no matter what's happening around them.
50:34Our final brain training.
50:37Mentally prepare yourself
50:38for the final task.
50:39Don't let the sounds put you off.
50:43While Sterling is concentrating hard
50:45to shut out the noise,
50:46Shahad decides that
50:48now's the time
50:48for a pillar fight.
50:51If this is Shahad's idea
50:52of remaining focused,
50:54then it does not board well.
50:58It's a good tune.
51:00Just try and focus.
51:02Exactly, Sterling.
51:03Maybe the tip
51:04will help Shahad
51:05get into the zone.
51:08Repeat three positive statements
51:10to yourself.
51:12Okay then.
51:13I'm a winner!
51:14I'm a winner!
51:15I'm a winner!
51:16I'm a winner!
51:17Whilst Shahad may not have grasped
51:18the idea of talking to herself,
51:20you can't fault her confidence.
51:22I'm a winner!
51:23I'm going to win the black belt!
51:27Amazing
51:27from
51:28lovely
51:29amazing
51:30Dave
51:31The tip
51:32did make me focus,
51:33but I'm still quite nervous
51:35about the
51:36final task,
51:38so
51:38fingers crossed.
51:40The training helped me
51:42because you're thinking
51:43about a different thing
51:45instead of the
51:46annoying sound.
51:47To survive
51:49the table
51:49of supreme focus
51:50and win the
51:51black brain belt,
51:52our brainees
51:53must now put
51:54all their brain training
51:55to the test.
51:57Will three-time
51:57task winner
51:58and hot favourite
51:59Sterling
51:59at last realise
52:00his black brain belt
52:02dream?
52:03Or will Shahad's
52:04all-round confidence
52:05be enough
52:05to upset the odds?
52:07Let's find out.
52:10Table
52:11of
52:12supreme
52:13focus
52:13Rules
52:16are simple.
52:17Each brainee
52:18must push
52:18ball to their
52:19opponent's
52:19end of table
52:20using only
52:21power of
52:22mind.
52:24Sensors
52:24in brainees
52:25headbands
52:25measure brain waves.
52:27This is converted
52:28into electrical
52:29signal
52:29which moves
52:30ball.
52:32More focus
52:33of mind
52:33stronger signal.
52:36Can see
52:36how brainees
52:37are doing
52:38on computer
52:38readout.
52:39Two lines
52:40represent
52:40two different
52:41players.
52:42A more focused
52:43mind
52:43produces
52:44lower lines
52:44and ball
52:45will travel
52:46faster.
52:47To make sure
52:50this is the test
52:50of all tests
52:51our brainees
52:52must win
52:53the best
52:53of three rounds.
53:03So
53:04this is the
53:05big one.
53:07Our two finalists
53:08must use
53:09all their brain
53:09training
53:10to enter
53:10their zone
53:11of absolute
53:12focus.
53:12this is the
53:15reason
53:15they came
53:15to the
53:16dojo.
53:17This
53:18is the
53:18moment
53:18they've
53:19been
53:19training
53:19for.
53:27It's
53:28Sterling
53:28who's off
53:29to the
53:29better
53:29start.
53:33But
53:33Shahad
53:34is fighting
53:34back.
53:35Her lower
53:36black line
53:36showing
53:37that it's
53:37she
53:38who's now
53:38focusing
53:39the better
53:39of the
53:39two.
53:59It's
54:001-0
54:00to Shahad.
54:01And
54:07Sterling
54:08now faces
54:08an uphill
54:09battle.
54:10Can he
54:10re-find
54:10the focus
54:11he's shown
54:12throughout
54:12his training?
54:22This
54:23time
54:23it's
54:23Shahad
54:24who gets
54:24off to
54:24a flyer.
54:25Her face
54:25is a
54:26picture
54:26of
54:26concentration.
54:31It's
54:38all
54:38over
54:39and
54:39almost
54:40unbelievably
54:40it's
54:41Shahad
54:41who's
54:42come
54:42out
54:42on
54:42top.
54:44Finding
54:44new
54:44depths
54:45of
54:45focus
54:45when
54:45it
54:46really
54:46mattered
54:46her
54:47training
54:47has
54:47paid
54:48off.
54:48Shahad
54:49truly
54:49has
54:50proved
54:50herself
54:51to be
54:51a
54:51master
54:51of
54:52the
54:52mind
54:52and
54:53worthy
54:53winner
54:53of
54:54the
54:54brain
54:54jitsu
54:55black
54:55belt.
54:57It's
54:57amazing.
54:58It's
54:58amazing
54:59feeling
54:59and I'm
54:59just
55:00really
55:00happy.
55:00I just
55:01did the
55:02training.
55:02I just
55:02said
55:03positive
55:03things
55:04over
55:04and
55:04over
55:04again.
55:05It
55:05really
55:06did
55:06help.
55:07But glory
55:08for one
55:09brings
55:09disappointment
55:10for another
55:10and although
55:11he fought
55:12valiantly
55:12Sterling
55:13must now
55:14leave
55:14the
55:15dojo.
55:17Walk
55:18of
55:18eternal
55:19regret.
55:21I'm
55:21feeling
55:22quite
55:23disappointed
55:23because
55:24I did
55:26try hard
55:27but
55:27Shahad
55:28was
55:28focusing
55:29on the
55:29ball
55:30maybe
55:31more
55:31than
55:31me
55:31but
55:32I'm
55:32also
55:32proud
55:33of
55:33myself
55:33because
55:33I
55:33didn't
55:34get
55:34this
55:34far
55:34and
55:35I
55:35got
55:35through
55:35all
55:36the
55:36rounds
55:36and
55:37I'm
55:37very
55:37happy
55:37about
55:38that
55:38but
55:38you win
55:39some
55:39you lose
55:40some.
55:43What an
55:43amazing
55:44turnaround
55:44for
55:45Shahad.
55:45Up
55:46against
55:46the
55:46triple
