00:00To state that no brainies or insects were harmed in the making of this program
00:03And that none of the training you're about to see be attempted unless under expert supervision
00:07Eight brainies, one challenge
00:11To use complex mass of 100 billion cells we call Brain
00:16For chance to win Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt
00:19This is Brain Jitsu
00:22Born in Lancashire, trained in Japan, with mind as sharp as Samurai sword
00:33He is Brain Master, he is the Sensei
00:36Konichiwa, and welcome to Brain Jitsu
00:41Mental training specially designed to boost brain power and focus
00:47My trainees, or brainies, have been following a basic program of training in the comfort of their own home
00:53A brain-boosting routine of exercise, sleep, and enough fruit and veg to stock a green grocers
01:01The training has prepared me so much for today because it's helped me get over my fear factor
01:07I'm going to win the black belt because I'm really focused and concentrated
01:11I think I find it easy being concentrated and focused, but I sometimes rush a bit
01:16So, let's see what happens
01:20My brainies must put their training into practice by testing a part of the brain we use every day
01:25Level 1
01:27No, no, Walt
01:29Take a look at all these chocolates
01:33Mmm, yummy
01:33But how many white rabbits are there?
01:37If you got six, then congratulations
01:40You've just used your occipital lobes
01:43This area, the seeing part of our brain, allows us to recognise and separate images from each other
01:50The seven brainies who use their occipital lobes the best will be allowed to enter my brain jitsu dojo, where their training will continue
01:58The one who fails will be left outside
02:01Oh! Feel the burn
02:03Enter the dojo
02:07Our brainies must answer four questions by looking at the different shapes on the board in front of them
02:13Get the questions right and they'll be left with a four-digit code
02:16Which they must then use to unlock a piece of brain and secure their place in the dojo
02:21But with only seven pieces of brain and eight brainees
02:26One of either Amrit, Alex, Louisa, Christopher, Taylor, Jacob, Heather or Samuel
02:34Will be left outside and eliminated
02:36A bang of the gong reveals the four questions
02:41How many pink shapes are there?
02:53How many hexagons are there?
03:02How many blue shapes with black numbers are there?
03:05How many black numbers are there?
03:21The answer our braineers are looking for is 4, 3, 2, 8
03:25First off a stool is Amrit, with Louisa not far behind
03:31Faster than you can say deep fried dumplings, more of our braineers join them
03:38Leaving just Christopher and Taylor still at the noodle bar
03:41And it's Louisa who's first to crack that combination, quickly followed by Heather and Alex
03:47Meanwhile, speedy Amrit has had to make her way back to the noodle bar for another look at the board
03:56A quick reminder of the cord our braineers are searching for
04:02It's 4, 3, 2, 8
04:04As there are four pink shapes, three hexagons, two blue shapes for black numbers and eight black numbers
04:10Which means that Samuel still hasn't found the right cord
04:16Come on Samuel, work those occipital lobes
04:20With three more braineers safely through, it's now a straight fight between Christopher and Samuel
04:28For the last piece of brain
04:30But while Samuel's taking his time, Christopher is heading backwards and forwards to the brain
04:37More often than the bullet train during rush hour
04:39Samuel now thinks he's got the combination, but has his tactic of not rushing paid off
04:47You bet, Samuel's lock springs open, leaving Christopher to say sayonara to his fellow braineers
04:54While seven have proven themselves worthy of entering the dojo and continuing their brain training
05:03For Christopher, it's the end of the road
05:05I think I might have been rushing a little
05:08I feel so bad, I'm really gutted
05:11Someone had to go, didn't they?
05:14So with six levels to go, it's time for Louisa, Alex, Heather, Taylor, Jacob, Amrit and Samuel
05:24To receive their yellow brain belts
05:26I was really wondering whether I'd be able to get through or not
05:30And then eventually when I got it right, I was really happy
05:32Right now I'm feeling so relieved
05:34It's just to get over it and find out that it works, the combination works
05:38I can't believe I got through
05:40I thought I was going to lose
05:41I really want the black belt
05:43In this next level of training, things are going to get really hard
05:52We do things every day without even thinking about it
06:00Like throwing a ball
06:01But next time you're with your mates, try throwing it with the arm you wouldn't normally use
06:06Yeah, a lot more difficult, isn't it?
06:09If you manage to do that, you're using part of your brain that deals with problem solving
06:14The frontal lobes
06:15And that's what level two is all about
06:19Taking something you normally do without thinking and doing it differently
06:23Work it!
06:25To prepare them for using their frontal lobes in the next challenge, my brainees are going to need some training
06:30Room of Mental Nourishment
06:33This is the Room of Mental Nourishment
06:36Where our young hopefuls will train their brains between every task
06:40While there's nothing to stop our brainees from kicking back and helping themselves to some tempting treats on offer
06:46The more seriously they take their training, the better prepared they'll be for the challenges that lie ahead
06:52And in level two, that challenge is all about getting their brains to think in a new way
06:58Brain training
06:59Take turns to call out the action on your cards
07:03Everyone must do it
07:05Only when you say, Sensei says, before the action
07:09Sensei says, right knee up
07:11Sensei says, turn head right
07:15Both palms up
07:18It looks like our brainees' home training has paid off
07:21All are focusing well
07:23Sensei says, spin around clock
07:25And with none of them yet to put a foot wrong
07:27Our brainees decide to make things harder than a game of speed sudoku
07:31Why don't we swap it around a bit
07:33So let's say, when someone says, look sad, let's look happy
07:36And if someone said, Sensei says, let's not do it
07:40Sensei says, look at ceiling
07:42Both arms down
07:44Both palms up
07:47Sensei says
07:49Holy karaoke, is there nothing that will put these young brainees off their mental strife?
07:54Sensei says
07:55A tip hardly seems necessary, but he has one anyway
07:58Don't rush
08:00Pause for two seconds to think before you react
08:03That is good advice
08:06You see, spending a moment to think before rushing in really can improve your focus
08:10And help you to perform better
08:12Rub stomach clockwise
08:13Sensei says both palms up
08:16At last, Jacob trips up
08:21And he's not happy
08:23You did it as well
08:25Just carry him
08:26Never mind, Jacob
08:28You have a nice choccy biscuit
08:29That'll make you feel better
08:30For the next challenge, I'm really confident
08:33I'm going to win this thing
08:35You're not going to win
08:36Because I am
08:39So will confident Jacob get one over on his new rival, Laidback Louisa
08:43Or will it be one of the other five who will be heading for an early exit?
08:50It's time to find out
08:51As our seven brainees now put their frontal lobe train into the test
08:55Guardian of the dojo and task adjudicator the sheehan will now demonstrate the level two challenge
09:02Patsy feely boxes
09:04Inside seven boxes is hidden item
09:09Five of which match with item on shopping list
09:12Brainees must take in turns to reach into each box and guess what inside
09:18Not by looking, but by feeling
09:20If they think that item matches with one on list
09:24They must try to remember number of box it is in
09:27Once brainees have felt all seven boxes
09:31Then have 15 seconds to identify which box they are in
09:36Brainees with least number of correct answer will be eliminated from dojo
09:42My brainees tip for this task is to focus on just the items on the list
09:49And mentally tick them off as they feel each box
09:53Work those frontal lobes
09:55Our brainees wait nervously for the gong
09:58But if you want to know what they don't
10:01Here's what's on their shopping list today
10:03In blue box number two pickled eggs
10:06Purple box four hides pickled onions
10:09In green box three we have flour
10:12Red is in orange box five
10:16And in yellow box number six we have noodles
10:20But there are also two distractions for our brainees
10:23In pink box number one are maggots
10:25And in red box number seven some balls
10:27And if that all wasn't enough to make our brainees think differently
10:31You'll have noticed we've jumbled up the box numbers
10:33Three, two, one, it's go on the gong
10:36Brainees have just five seconds to identify each item before moving on to the next box
10:45Not being able to see the items
10:48The challenge for our brainees is to use their training to think in a new way
10:52Their hands must become their eyes as they focus solely on their sense of touch
10:56Looking a little worried, Amrit plunges her hand into the box
11:01Will she recognise the contents as flour?
11:04Can Heather remember that bread is in box number five?
11:13Are Taylor's frontal lobes helping her to identify the contents of this box as noodles?
11:19And has Alex worked out that maggots are definitely not on the menu?
11:23That's all seven boxes done
11:27And our brainees have 15 seconds to work out their answers
11:30Here's that list again
11:32And here are the box numbers
11:37There's the last gong
11:51So, who's benefited from their training and allowed their brains to think in a new way?
11:57Louisa matched two items with the correct box
12:00Alex, just one item out of five
12:04Heather, four out of five
12:07Taylor, also four out of five
12:11Jacob, two out of five
12:15Amrit, a full house, five out of five
12:19Alex's place in the dojo all rests on Samuel's score
12:25A perfect five out of five
12:27So, it's Alex whose focus is found wanting
12:31And who must now hand over his brain belt and leave the dojo
12:35Walk of eternal regret
12:40I feel a bit disappointed, really
12:42I thought I would get further
12:44Obviously, under pressure
12:45I didn't make it
12:47With five levels to go
12:53It's Louisa, Heather, Taylor, Jacob, Amrit and Samuel
12:58Who go on to get their orange brain belts
13:01Because I got the highest score
13:02I think I might not do so well in the next one
13:05It was kind of creepy
13:06Because in the training
13:07Me and Jacob both messed up a bit
13:09Though I don't like to admit it
13:10And then we both came sort of last
13:13I'm going to win
13:14Brainy, not so brainy
13:22Who's the clever clogs and whose brain needs a lot more training?
13:28Numbers, what would we do without them?
13:30Well, lots of stuff really
13:31But certainly not counting
13:33Now, a young French mathematician called Blaise Pascal
13:36Realised just how important numbers were
13:39And Witten invented the first adding machine in the early 1600s
13:43Calculator-tastic
13:44Now, back in 1993
13:46A routine Canadian flight had to make an emergency landing
13:49Why?
13:49Well, this was the first aircraft to use the metric system
13:52And the ground crew loaded 20,000 pounds of fuel
13:56Rather than 20,000 kilos
13:58By mistake
13:59Whoops
13:59Luckily, the pilot managed to get everyone safely onto the ground
14:02Phew!
14:04Brainy Pascal
14:04Not so brainy
14:06But 174
14:07Brain Jitsu
14:12Competition in Brain Jitsu Dojo hotting up
14:17Only six brainy remain to battle it out
14:19Under watchful eye of Sheehan
14:21Laid back Louisa
14:24First to secure a place in Dojo
14:26Right now I'm feeling so relieved
14:28Jacob, full of confidence
14:30You're not going to win
14:31Because I am
14:32Heather, well placed in both level
14:35Samuel
14:37Desperate to get hand on black belt
14:39I'm going to win the black belt
14:40Because I'm really focused and concentrated
14:42Amrit
14:43And Taylor
14:45Dark horse of group
14:47Challenge is about to get even tougher
14:50And only two brainy will make through to final test
14:53Table of supreme focus
14:55Where must move ball with power of mind
14:58For chance to win
14:59Brain Jitsu black brand belt
15:01Here's the time for
15:03Level 3
15:04Wind belt
15:05Now we all like to chat
15:09But did you know that using words to communicate
15:11Is one of the main reasons why our brains have grown so incredibly powerful
15:16And that having a conversation exercises both halves of the brain
15:21Now if all that's doing your head in
15:23Allow me to explain
15:25Imagine you're on a movie set
15:28Where each crew member is focusing on their own particular job
15:32But the director
15:34He has to be aware of what everyone's doing
15:36It's the same with the brain
15:39There's the left half
15:40Which deals with the details
15:41And there's the right half
15:43Which looks at the overall picture
15:45This next level of training
15:47Strengthens my brainy's focus
15:49By working one half of their brain under pressure
15:52Hey, pump it up
15:55Room of mental nourishment
15:58It's our brainy's second visit to the room of mental nourishment
16:03Where once again they'll train in preparation for the next challenge
16:07Which remember is all about using the two halves of the brain to communicate
16:11Brain training
16:15Get into pairs
16:16Direct the blindfolded trainee to stack the blocks using only one hand
16:21Up, left, left, put it closer
16:24Down
16:24By working in pairs
16:27Our brainy's will discover just how much brain power it takes to communicate
16:31Both speaking and listening
16:33The boys team of Jacob and Samuel get off to a flyer
16:37Left a bit, left a tiny bit, tiny bit more
16:40Yeah, leave it there
16:42Maybe get both hands
16:43That's good, that's good
16:44Little wonder
16:45Given that Samuel's tactic appears to be making sure he's the only person in the room
16:49Who can be heard
16:50Left hand, get up, right hand, right hand
16:53Close to you, er, the side that's head is on
16:55But Louisa and Amrit aren't far behind
16:57And like the boys, are using both the right and left side of their brain to communicate clearly
17:02Maybe pull the top three a bit
17:05Get another one of the long ones
17:08But far from using the left side of her brain to concentrate on Taylor's instructions
17:12Heather is finding the old task a bit of a giggle
17:15Oh dear, time for a brain tip
17:19Tip, use short, clear instructions
17:24Imagine yourself hearing them
17:26In other words, what our guiders need to do is imagine what information their team mates need
17:31Because good communication means putting yourself in someone else's shoes
17:35Yeah, lie it down sideways
17:38This time, Heather decides that she's gonna give the instructions
17:42But her message is still a bit fuzzy
17:44Right, now grab a big, a big one, no, yeah that one
17:48Shimmering skyscrapers
17:53The boys are continuing where they left off
17:55One false move at this sort of altitude
17:58And their tearing effort could quickly turn to rubble
18:01Meanwhile, Heather and Taylor's communication is still leaving a lot to be desired
18:06Long
18:07Yeah, yeah, that's fine
18:09That's it, that's it
18:10Right, perfect, perfect
18:11Leave it like that
18:12I did try and give short sentences
18:15Like up, down, across
18:17You were really confusing me at some point, so
18:20How can you say I was confused?
18:21I was giving nice, precise sentences
18:23We think we're best because he's really good at telling me where to put the blocks
18:27We used really short, precise instructions
18:29Like I said on the tip
18:30And I think it's fair to say that we did the best
18:33So, can the boys take their training into the dojo?
18:37Can Laidback Louisa land her second level win?
18:40And will Happy Heather stop giggling and start focusing?
18:44It's time to find out
18:45As our six now put their communication train into their test
18:50This is test of communication skill
18:55So, six brainy must first divide into teams of two by drawing chopsticks
19:00As quickly as possible, teams must whack open six lanterns containing number that go together to form some
19:12Pairs first need to decide who is Guider, who is Whacker
19:17Whackers will be blindfolded and will be relying on Guider to locate lanterns
19:23When all six are opened, brainies stop clock by shouting
19:27Brinjitsu
19:28Quicker they whack lanterns, more time they have to pick up numbers and work out some
19:34When brainies are happy with answer, hit gong
19:37First two teams to provide correct answer get green belts and advance to next level
19:43One brainy from losing team will be eliminated
19:47The key to success here is for the Guider to use the right side of their brain to follow their teammates' progress and give them clear instructions
19:57For their partner it's vital they use the left side of their brain to focus on these instructions and nothing else
20:05Walk forward, take one step
20:08Okay
20:09Raise your arm up
20:11Whack
20:12Okay
20:13Turn to face
20:14First to put their communication training to the test are Louisa and Taylor
20:18With laid back Louisa calling the shot and Taylor under the blindfold, the girls get off to a good start
20:24But they quickly run into problems
20:26Whack
20:27Whack
20:28That's better
20:29Turn to face the front
20:31It's all very well saying face front but who's front?
20:34Walk forward
20:35Whack
20:38Okay bring arm up again
20:40Whack
20:41That's better
20:42After a bit more air tennis the girls finally stop the clock
20:45Okay
20:46Brinjitsu
20:47But at 2 minutes 8 seconds it's not the quickest of times
20:50And they'll have to wait to discover if it's bought them any extra time to find their numbers
20:54Walk forward, step forward, arm up, whack
20:57Next up is Heather and Amrit
20:59Whack
21:00Whack
21:01And it looks like Heather's continued where she left off of the training
21:04Getting the left side of her brain into her right old muddle
21:07Take a step to your right
21:08Your right
21:09No to your right
21:10Okay
21:12Whack
21:15Okay
21:16Forward
21:17But at last the girls get into their rhythm stopping the clock in 1 minute 20 seconds
21:21Brain Jitsu
21:23Okay side to step right
21:25Last up are Samuel and Jacob who both performed well during training
21:29Okay forwards
21:30Whack
21:31Okay
21:32As before it's Samuel who's using the right side of his brain to direct his partner
21:37And like an army sergeant major he's making sure that Jacob can hear him
21:41Whack
21:42Okay forward
21:43With Jacob hitting harder than a ninja's stomach the boys make light work of the lanterns
21:48But just as the record time beckons Jacob's radar goes awry
21:52Okay
21:53Get on Mark
21:54Whack
21:55Whack
21:56Whack
21:57Whack
21:58Brain Jitsu
21:59The boys stop the clock in 1 minute 27
22:01Pretty good but not as good as it could have been
22:06As the fastest to whack all six lanterns it's happy Heather and Amrit who set off first to find their numbers
22:12With the others following in five second intervals
22:14Here's what our brainies are looking for see if you can work out the sum
22:19Remember the first two teams to work it out will go through to the next level
22:24Sharper than a pair of samurai swords Heather and Amrit find the solution in next to no time
22:30But the boys focus seems to have deserted them and Louisa and Taylor bang their gong next
22:36So do the numbers add up?
22:4120 times 3 divided by 2 equals 30
22:45That looks good
22:47Yes
22:48In fact all our teams have found the right answer
22:51But as the last to finish it's Samuel and confident Jacob who will be battling it out to avoid elimination
22:57In the
22:58Step
23:00With just one green belt up for grabs both brainies must use all their powers of focus to fight the urge to blink
23:09The first to falter will be eliminated
23:17Oh and almost immediately it's Samuel who drops his guard
23:21What a disaster for the young brainie
23:25While confident Jacob can join the other brainies who are already through
23:28For Samuel it's time to hand over his orange brain belt and leave the dojo
23:37Walk of eternal regret
23:41Well I'm feeling really sad that I've gone out
23:45Well we were really encouraged by the training but it just didn't really work out in the actual challenge
23:50So with four levels to go it's Louisa, Heather, Taylor, Jacob and Amrit who line up for their green belts
24:01I think in the next round the last boy is going to come out and the girls are going to win
24:06Now I just want to get as far as I can and beat the girls because I'm the only boy left
24:11Brain Titu
24:18Level four
24:20Blue bolt
24:21This fourth level requires our brainies to master a primitive part of the brain called the amygdala
24:28The area that responds to threat
24:35Remember the last time you felt afraid or panicky?
24:37Maybe that time you were about to take a really crucial penalty
24:41Well that feeling was triggered by the old amygdala
24:45Now stress can make you lose focus
24:48Fact
24:49Which is why my brainies must train to keep their emotions under control
24:55Room of mental nourishment
24:58We're back in the room of mental nourishment and it's time for our five remaining green belt holders to overcome their fear and stay focused
25:08Brain training
25:13Form a circle
25:15Pass the disgusting drink around the circle
25:18Only passing a ton when you have said a different word relating to the last word someone says
25:22After one minute the brainy holding the drink has to drink it
25:27But drink what?
25:28The answer is a cup full of seaweed
25:30Nice
25:31Traffic lights
25:34Red
25:35Round one
25:37And our brainies are doing well
25:38Reeling off words as calmly as a zen master in a health spa
25:44Flowers
25:47Grass
25:49Ants
25:50But the gong can't be far off
25:51And our brainies would do well to step up the pace
25:55Nine
25:58And ten
25:59Oh there it is
26:00But who's been left holding the cup of yuck?
26:02I think you should both drink it
26:04Mmm
26:05No but no but one minute
26:06I really said my word I was ready to pass it on you and I've passed it
26:09You both have to drink it
26:11Go on Louisa
26:12Come on Amra
26:14Laid back Louisa goes first
26:19Woo
26:21That's right girl grab a few of those jelly beans that'll take the taste away
26:26Time for a training tip I think
26:29Here's a tip
26:31Concentrate
26:32Try to blank out the time and fear of the drink to avoid panicking
26:36Focusing only on the task in hand is useful advice anytime you feel nervous
26:41The calmer you are the better you'll perform
26:44But as the pace picks up it's Amra who's briefly lost for words
26:49Glasses
26:52Frame
26:54Picture
26:56Photograph
26:58Painting
27:00Drawing
27:02Where's the second gong and once again two brainies are left holding the drink of stink
27:07Go on gulp it down
27:09Taylor that was nothing
27:12It's not that bad actually
27:14That's not
27:16I think the tip tip helped because I wasn't scared of the drink
27:22I just thought of something really quickly and passed it on
27:25I think I was quick but I think I was just unlucky to have to stop at me twice
27:28What two times in a row?
27:30Yeah because it was Taylor she was being so slow so then when she passed it on to me it rang
27:35So how would confident Jacob cope with being the last boy left?
27:40And will Amra ever get over her double dose of seaweed?
27:43It's time to find out as our five are challenged to overcome their fears once again
27:50Creepy Crawly Word Grab
27:54This level real test of mind over matter for brainies and will push them to really overcome their fear
28:01Underneath the creepy crawlies lie an assortment of letters worth different points
28:06Brainies have just one minute to plunge hands into tank and pick out up to seven letters each
28:11They then have a further minute to make higher scoring words they can
28:18To do well my brainies must block out the signals coming from their amygdala and ignore the creepy crawlies
28:25The quicker they combat their fear the more time they'll have to pick out the high scoring letters
28:36Underneath this pile of cockroaches are an extra five golden letters
28:40If our brainies manage to use one in their word they'll double their score
28:47There's the gong and our five fearless brainies dive in
28:55Unless I'm very much mistaken Amrit that is a big fat juicy cockroach
29:00Just don't tell your amygdala
29:01While Heather looks afraid of getting a nasty nip at any moment
29:04Confident Jacob is quietly going about his business
29:08Focusing on just picking out those letters
29:12The minutes up our brainies now have a further minute to make the highest scoring word they can from their letters
29:19Amrit has found herself one of the golden letters
29:25Amrit has found herself one of the golden letters
29:27Which is good news if she can just make a word
29:29One two two four five six seven
29:31See if you can make a word from the anagram on the screen now
29:33See if you can make a word from the anagram on the screen now
29:47There's the second gong, how have our brainies done?
29:49Dozes
29:52With a Z in her word that's a brain-tastic 14 points for laid-back Louisa
29:59Poet
30:01That's six points for happy Heather
30:05Being
30:07Nine points for Taylor
30:10Hello
30:12Confident Jacob picks up seven points
30:14Whips
30:15And with that golden W in her word
30:17It's a stonking 16 points for Amrit
30:21And so by just a single point it's happy Heather
30:25Who must leave the dojo
30:29Walk of eternal regret
30:32It's really annoying because I did get very short words
30:36If I'd taken a bit more time on the lettering and thought about my words
30:40I probably wouldn't be out by now
30:41So with three levels to go those who use their craniums to conquer the cockroaches are duly rewarded with their blue belts
30:50Well the cockroaches obviously were disgusting and you just have to think well if I want to stay in I've got to get over this and do it and put my hands in them
30:58Chaney helped me a lot because when I had to drink the drink twice I really didn't want to but then when I did the task it made me realize if I can drink the drink then I can just do the task
31:07Brain T2
31:10Brain T2
31:14Brainy not so brainy
31:16Who's the clever clogs and whose brain needs a lot more training?
31:21Mount Everest what a beauty
31:24Now these two geezers Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay was the first to climb it
31:28In the ultimate test of mind over matter not only did they conquer a blooming great mountain but they also had to battle against snow, ice and temperatures that would freeze your thermals off
31:38Mount Tasty
31:40Now take a look at this slide
31:42They don't climb steep slopes they prefer to roll down them and for what?
31:46A blooming bit of cheese that's what?
31:48E-Damn that's Gouda hurt
31:50Brainy Hillary and Tenzing
31:51Not so brainy cheese rolling champs
31:56Brain T2
32:00Tension in Brain T2 Dojo mounting
32:02Thus four young hopeful remain to compete under watchful eye of Sheehan
32:07Confident Jacob
32:09Now I just want to get as far as I can
32:11And beat the girls
32:13Lead back Louisa
32:15Also Amrit winner of last three level
32:16Winner of last three level
32:17I think in the next round
32:19The last boy is going to come out and the girls are going to win
32:23And Taylor
32:25Only two brainy will make final showdown
32:28Table of Supreme Forecast
32:30Where must move ball with power of mind
32:33Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt is within their grasp
32:36These are time for
32:38Level 5
32:40Red Belt
32:42Now if you're learning how to ride a half pipe on a BMX bike
32:46Then you might be interested to know that your new hobby is doing wonders for your old grey matter
32:52Exercising both the thinking part of the brain, the cerebrum, and the doing part, the cerebellum
32:59You see, doing new things increases the flow of blood into your head
33:04Which keeps your brain cells topped up with the oxygen they need to perform at their best
33:08So, in level 5 my brainy's are going to be challenged to learn new skills
33:14Now, you can speed up how quickly the brain takes in new stuff
33:19And this is what our brainy's are going to train for now
33:23Room of Mental Nourishment
33:28It's our brainy's fourth visit to the Room of Mental Nourishment
33:32Where they'll be training their brains in how to learn new skills
33:34Brain training
33:37Flip and catch as many drink coasters as you can
33:41Do you lift up?
33:43They're like that or something
33:45Our brainy's throw themselves into the task
33:47And the room descends into chaos
33:51Jacob's voice can do this sort of thing
33:55Ouch
33:57I really can't even flip them
33:58Taylor, in particular, is struggling to get both the thinking part and the doing part of her brain to work together
34:04I can't even hold them properly
34:07I think the idea, Taylor, is to flip, not flap
34:10Time for a training tip
34:14Here's a tip
34:16For all you ladies
34:18Approach this positively
34:21Laugh out loud for 30 seconds
34:24That's just a really weird tip
34:29In fact, it's not as weird as it sounds
34:32You see, a fit of the giggles actually increases our heart rate
34:36Which sends more oxygen into the brain
34:38Helping it to perform at its best
34:40So, why not try it the next time you're about to try something new?
34:44Let's see if it's worked
34:46Not bad
34:48I'm smiling
34:52In fact, Taylor has even adapted her training
34:55He's just like smiling and flip it
34:57Smile!
35:01Smile!
35:05And before long, our brainy's are performing more flips than a ninja entered into a gymnastics competition
35:13Obviously the tips seem to help, you know, to be positive at everything
35:17It's a lot better, don't you?
35:18I actually gave the group a tip to say that if you said smile and smile when you flipped it, you could actually catch it
35:26Well, it did work when I did a couple of times with one thing, then I tried four and it just went all over the place
35:32I think you're just overconfident
35:34So, will Smiley Taylor's new technique help her to win the next brain belt?
35:40And will Jacob's confidence be his downfall?
35:44Only time will tell as our four put their latest brain training to the test
35:49Quick, quick, don't drip!
35:50Brainy must use training to keep clear head and steady hand to carry water across obstacle course, spilling as little as possible
36:02There is trampoline to glide over, seesaw to deal with, and stairs to climb
36:07Although racing against clock, the more water brainy's manage to keep in balls, the more seconds they'll have knocked off their overall time
36:17Brainy with slowest time will be eliminated
36:19The tip for my brainy's in this next task is to
36:26Remain calm and think positive thoughts
36:30Giving in to frustration will only lessen their focus and slow them up
36:34The she-hand fills the balls and can almost taste the tension in the dojo
36:39But which of our four brainy's will best use their training to master this tricky new task?
36:44Laid-back Louisa is first to go
36:48And immediately picks up a five-second penalty for stepping onto, not over the green box
36:54Louisa's certainly concentrating, but she could do with focusing less on her ball and a bit more on where she's going
37:06Now for the seesaw, and a few more precious drops of water, waste away
37:14It's all over, and while not that slow, you have to wonder if Louisa really has made the most of her training
37:21For every unit of water saved, our brainy's have one second subtracted from their time
37:28So with 20 units left, that's 20 seconds, Louisa will have knocked off her overall total
37:34Will it be enough?
37:36It's now Smiley Taylor's turn to get her cerebrum working with her cerebellum
37:40Can she repeat her impressive form from training?
37:44It's a steady start, but is it too steady?
37:47She may not have spilt any water yet, but I've seen fossils form faster than that
37:51Nicely does it over the trampoline though
37:55But oh dear, the seesaw strikes, making Taylor lose more water than a sumo in a sauna
38:03One or two more wobbles, and Taylor reaches the end
38:08But how much liquid has she got left?
38:13That's 19 units, not as much as Louisa, but will it be enough to see her through?
38:23It's now the turn of confident Jacob, but right from the off, his balance is all over the place
38:29He might be fast, but his ball is looking like a mini tsunami
38:38Splish
38:42Splash
38:44And splosh
38:47So with just 15 seconds subtracted from his time, has Jacob's speed been enough to see him through?
39:01Last to go is High Flying Amrit
39:03Will she remember her training and stay positive?
39:06A little leak here
39:09A little leak there
39:10But on the whole, it's a cracking performance, her training's really paid off
39:19Just a small spillage on the seesaw
39:22An Amrit's home and dry
39:25With 16 units of saved water, has she done enough? Let's find out
39:31Laid back Louisa, finished in 1 minute 29 seconds
39:37Take away 20 seconds for her 20 units of saved water
39:40And that's a final time of 1 minute 9 seconds
39:43Smiley Taylor, finished in 2 minutes 2 seconds
39:47Minus 19 seconds for her 19 units of water
39:50And that's a final time of 1 minute 43
39:521 minute 43
39:54Confident Jacob got round in a quick fire 43 seconds
39:58Minus 15 seconds for his saved water
40:00Gives him a final total of 28 seconds
40:03Finally, Amrit, who got round in 58 seconds
40:08Minus 16 seconds for her 16 units of saved water
40:12And that gives her a final time of 42 seconds
40:15All of which means that it's Smiley Taylor, who is eliminated
40:19And must leave the dojo
40:26Walk of eternal regret
40:31As I went through the different stages
40:35I felt that more and more that I would be able to get to the black belt
40:39But I'm not that disappointed because I got quite far
40:44I got quite far
40:48With just 2 levels to go, that just leaves Louisa, Jacob and Amrit to stand proud in red
40:55I didn't do as well as I thought I did
40:57Obviously I've got to up my game and notice things and make sure I'm doing what I need to be doing
41:02This time I didn't make it by the skin of my teeth
41:05I won it
41:06I did it
41:07Now I feel so, so confident I'm going to win the black belt
41:12Brain Titu
41:16Level 6
41:18It's this level which will decide which 2 of my remaining braineese will go on to battle it out for the black belt
41:28Now, imagine you're a gymnast
41:32Not only do you have your routine to remember, but you've got to keep in time to the music
41:37And you've got a load of people watching you
41:40It's remembering stuff like this under pressure that Level 6 is all about
41:45It centres around 3 areas of the brain
41:48The seeing part, the occipital lobes
41:51The memory part, the temporal lobes
41:54And the movement part, the cerebellum
41:58To the max!
42:00Room of Mental Nourishment
42:05Our 3 surviving braineese are back in the room of mental nourishment
42:09This time for a dose of memory training
42:10Brain training
42:12Brain training
42:14Memorise the sequence of colours
42:16Ok, we've got 30 seconds to do this
42:18You remember these ones, I'll remember these ones
42:20I'll remember the last 3
42:22So just remember your ones in your ones
42:24Orange, green, green
42:26I think the idea is to remember the old sequence Amrit
42:28Not just a little bit
42:30I'll go first
42:32Pink, red, blue, pink
42:34Orange, green, purple
42:36Yellow, green, silver
42:38I think we got it all right
42:40I should hope so
42:42Let's see if a tip will encourage our braineese to stretch themselves a bit
42:45Tip!
42:47Create a song linking the colours together
42:49How about we mix them all up
42:51And then each of us memorises the whole line
42:54That's more like it, now for some real brain training
42:57Still saying real, it's fishy
42:59Ok, so the order is orange, red, green, yellow, pink, purple, green, silver, blue and pink
43:06Memory training like this isn't just great for the brain, it's also very useful
43:11Try turning your school timetable into a song and see if you can remember every class
43:16We've got two, no, pink, blue, silver, two
43:18In the middle, green and red both have one syllable
43:20Green
43:22And the two on the outside have two syllables
43:25Hang on a minute, I thought our braineese were meant to be making up a song
43:29Pink, blue, silver, two, green is its brother and purple is its sister
43:34Starts with pink, yellow, green, red, orange
43:39Hey, we got it all right
43:42In the training I think I took the lead
43:44But from Jacob we had, you know, the fact that blue and silver two rhymed
43:49I think, erm, Jacob is good
43:53But I think Louisa might do better than him because she's controlling it a lot
43:58So that could either show two things, she's either scared of it or that she's really confident, so I'm not sure
44:03I hope she's scared, I don't want her to be confident
44:09So will laid back Louisa prove to be a scaredy cat?
44:13Will Jacob continue to be the most confident?
44:17Or will high flying Amrit bag her fourth level win?
44:22Only time will tell as our final three put their memory training to the test
44:26For one of two brown brain belts and a place on the table of supreme focus
44:31Super memory dizzy dance
44:36Brainy is a spin around on dizzy wheel total of ten times
44:42While using all power of focus to memorize five images in front of them
44:47Then must raise against clock to cross balancing beam
44:51And collect exact opposite of those image from ten hanging above them
44:56If Brainy remember seeing sun, then must pick moon
45:01When happy they have arranged images in correct order
45:05Must hit gong to make clock stop
45:09My tip for the Brainy's is to keep focused on the main objective
45:14And use their training to link the five images together
45:17So, as our final three brave the dizzy wheel
45:20Will their memory training help them to remember the images
45:23And ignore the effects of being spun round like termites in a tornado?
45:26Time to spin
45:34Laid back Louisa's mouthing the names of the images to herself
45:37A smart tactic
45:41Don't forget our Brainy's must fight their dizziness
45:44And pick out the opposite images of the ones they saw on the wheel
45:47So, here are the images that Louisa saw
45:51And here are their opposites
45:54For everyone she gets wrong, there's a five second penalty
45:57The Brainy with the slowest time will be eliminated from the dojo
46:01And it looks like her training has paid off because that's 5.85
46:06But Louisa will have to wait to find out if she's been quick enough
46:08Next to wobble off the wheel is confident Jacob
46:24But Jacob's just realised he's only got four images
46:27What was it again?
46:29Come on Jacob, focus
46:30There's the gong, and that looks like a full set
46:42But has his mistake cost him deer?
46:47Last to go is high flying Amrit
46:50Oops, steady
46:51Oops, steady
46:57Oh no, I've only got three
46:59Yes, and you need five
47:00Five
47:02That doesn't look like the right order though
47:11Calling on all her training, Amrit has another go
47:16There's the gong
47:17And like her fellow Brainy's
47:19Amrit's also got the right order
47:21Which means that this result is going to come down to speed
47:25Laid back Louisa finished in 1 minute 6 seconds
47:30But confident Jacob finished in a quicker 59 seconds
47:34While high flying Amrit finished in 1 minute 1 second
47:38Meaning that it's she and Jacob who go through
47:42And so by a mere 5 seconds
47:45It's laid back Louisa whose journey has finally come to an end
47:52Walk of eternal regret
47:55I'm obviously very disappointed to be out of a brain jet soon
48:00But it happens to most people except for one
48:04And this was my time
48:05So, with just one level to go that leaves confident Jacob and high flying Amrit
48:12To don their brown brain belts and prepare for the final showdown
48:17Everybody thought I was going to lose on this one
48:20But I won it
48:22I really really want this black belt but Jacob thinks he's going to win it
48:25Because he's so overconfident
48:27I'm going to win this
48:29I'm not going to lose, failure is not an option
48:31Brain Jitsu
48:36Eight young hopeful arrive at brain training dojo to fight for brain jitsu black brain belts
48:45As training got tougher, so brainies fell by wayside
48:50Some lack focus
48:52Others let pressure get to them
48:54Now just two remain
48:57Confident Jacob, winner of last two level
48:59This time I didn't make it by the skin of my teeth
49:03I won it
49:05High flying Amrit
49:07Most consistent of all brainy
49:09I think in the next round
49:11The last boy is going to come out and the girls are going to win
49:14I really really want this black belt
49:16But who will use brain training to the max
49:19To win last challenge
49:21Level 7
49:23Black belt
49:25So, this is it
49:26Between my two remaining brainies and the black belt
49:30Stands brain jitsu's ultimate challenge
49:33A mental duel that is head to head in every sense
49:38The battlefield? A table
49:41But not just any table
49:43For this my friends is the table of supreme focus
49:46Where our two brainies will attempt to move a ball across the table
49:50Using only the power of their mind
49:53By getting this far
49:56They've already demonstrated mental control
49:58Under many different types of pressure
50:00But now they must learn to focus their minds
50:03By entering a state of total calm
50:06To prepare them
50:08My two finalists will need to get into
50:10The zone
50:12Room of mental nourishment
50:13In this their final visit to the room of mental nourishment
50:15Our last two brainies are about to train and how to stay focused
50:17No matter what's happening around them
50:19Brain training
50:21Mentally prepare yourself for the final task
50:23Don't let the sounds put you off
50:24So, our two finalists must block out the noises and concentrate only on finding their focus
50:34Both brainies are doing well
50:36High flying amrit a picture of relaxation
50:37And confident jacob are studying concentration
50:38But hang on, amrit has decided that this of all moments is the time to start a pillow fight
50:40So, our two finalists must block out the noises and concentrate only on finding their focus
50:44So, our two finalists must block out the noises and concentrate only on finding their focus
50:47Both brainies are doing well
50:49High flying amrit a picture of relaxation
50:51And confident jacob are studying concentration
50:53But hang on, amrit has decided that this of all moments is the time to start a pillow fight
51:06But jacob is refusing to take the bait, training to the very end
51:11Is there nothing that will put this young brainie off?
51:14Time for a training tip
51:17Tip, tense and then relax the individual parts of your body from head to toe
51:21From head to toe
51:23Ok
51:33Suffering sumo's amrit's at it again
51:36Doing her best to undermine jacob's preparation
51:41You have to wonder if this is disturbing her focus more than jacob's
51:45Finally, jacob can resist no longer
51:48Oh dear, oh dear
51:52Ah, ok, ok
51:54I win
51:56I feel so prepared for this task that I'm going to win it
51:59At first I was focused and then I tried to unfocus you
52:02And then even at the end, you was unfocused and you started hitting me with a pillow
52:07Which she says isn't true
52:09So, will confident jacob keep his focus for the next task?
52:12And will high-flying amrit come to regret her decision to resort to underhand tactics?
52:19Let's find out
52:21Table of supreme focus
52:25Rules are simple
52:29Each brainie must push ball to the opponent's end of table
52:32Using only power of mind
52:34Sensors in brainies headbands measure brain waves
52:38This is converted into electrical signal which moves ball
52:42More focused mind, stronger signal and faster ball will travel
52:47See how brainies are doing on this readout
52:51Two lines represent each player's brain waves
52:54Lower the line, more concentrated their mind
52:57To make sure this is the test of all tests
53:00Our brainies must win the best of three rounds
53:03So, this is the big one
53:05Our two finalists must use all their brain training to enter their zone of absolute focus
53:25This is the reason they came to the dojo
53:28This is the moment they've been training for
53:31It's Jacob who's first to get the ball rolling.
53:39His lower green brainwave showing that he just has the mental edge over his opponent.
53:48And although Amrit is doing her best to fight back, she seems powerless to reverse the direction of the ball.
54:01Ooh, it's 1-0 to confident Jacob, and it looks as though high-flying Amrit is paying the price for not taking her training seriously.
54:12Round two.
54:21Once again, it's another flying start for Jacob.
54:24Just for a moment, Amrit is able to resist, her training at last kicking in.
54:36But then her thin black line goes back to being just as up and down as a flea in an elevator.
54:43Little by little, Jacob piles on the pressure, his focus steady throughout.
54:48It's all over, and it's Jacob who's emerged triumphant, using his training to prove himself a true master of the mind
54:59and worthy winner of the black belt of brain jitsu.
55:03Yes!
55:04I can't believe I've won the black belt.
55:07I can't describe how good I feel.
55:10But glory, for one, brings disappointment for another.
55:13And although she fought valiantly, high-flying Amrit must now leave the dojo.
55:22Walk of eternal regret.
55:26I was trying to be calm, but I was really, really worried.
55:29I think Jacob probably did have the upper hand, because he didn't look so worried as I did.
55:34At the moment, I'm feeling really happy that I got this far,
55:37but I suppose I'm a little bit upset that I didn't get to win the black belt.
55:43What an amazing display of mental focus from Jacob.
55:53Always confident, this determined young brainy refused to back down.
55:59Drawing on all his brain training, he held his nerve to snatch that black brain belt from Amrit's grasp.
56:05The way I moved the ball was, I just sat there and stared at her,
56:09just not thinking of anything except that I was going to win.
56:14And the ball just went...
56:15I don't think Amrit should have been hitting me with the pillows.
56:20She should have been concentrating just like me,
56:22because if she did that, she probably would have had a better chance of winning it.
56:27Oh, I can't believe it.
56:30I can't believe I got this.
56:33Our journey has come to an end.
56:35Another brainy has proven themselves worthy to wear the brain jitsu black belt.
56:41But while brain jitsu might represent the most extreme form of brain training,
56:46its philosophy can be shared by all.
56:49Each and every one of you has it in your power to grow your mind.
56:55All it takes is dedication and practice.
56:58This has been...
