00:00I'd like to state that no braineese or insects were harmed in the making of this program,
00:03and that none of the training you're about to see be attempted unless under expert supervision.
00:09Eight braineese, one challenge.
00:12To use complex mass of 100 billion cells we call Brain for chance to win Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt.
00:19This is Brain Jitsu.
00:22Born in Lancashire, trained in Japan, with mind as sharp as samurai sword,
00:33he is brain master, he is the sensei.
00:37Konnichiwa, and welcome to Brain Jitsu.
00:42Mental training specially designed to boost brain power and focus.
00:47My trainees, or braineese, have been following a basic program of training in the comfort of their own home.
00:54A brain-boosting routine of exercise, sleep, and enough fruit and veg to stock a greengrocer's.
01:02The training has helped me because it tells me to use different parts of my brain instead of the usual part that I always use.
01:08I'm a tiny bit nervous, but I'm not very nervous because I'm quite a confident person.
01:13I really, really want this black belt and I'm going to win.
01:17Now, my braineese must put their training into practice by testing a part of the brain we use every day.
01:23Level one.
01:25You're not, Walt!
01:28Take a look at this crowd of people.
01:30Can you spot the woman in the red jumper?
01:34Spotted, eh?
01:36Congratulations.
01:37You've just used your occipital lobes.
01:40This area, the same part of our brain, allows us to recognise and separate images from each other.
01:48The seven braineese who use their occipital lobes the best will be allowed to enter my brain jitsu dojo, where their training will continue.
01:55The one who fails will be left outside.
02:00Oh!
02:00Feel the burn.
02:02Enter the dojo!
02:04Our braineese must answer four questions by studying the different shapes on the board in front of them.
02:12Get the questions right and they'll be left with a four-digit code, which they must then use to unlock a piece of brain and secure their place in the dojo.
02:19But with only seven pieces of brain and eight braineese, one of either Neil, Jamie, Lottie, Ushra, Jack, Georgina, Isabel or Devon will be left outside and eliminated.
02:34A bang of the gong reveals the four questions.
02:41How many red squares are there?
02:49How many three-sided red shapes are there?
02:59How many blue shapes are there?
03:06How many rectangles are there?
03:12The answer our braineese are looking for is four, two, seven, seven.
03:19First to think they've got the code are Devon and Ushra, with Isabel and Georgina hot in pursuit.
03:35With seven braineese in front of seven pieces of brain, it's Lottie who has to wait her turn.
03:41Crunchy Californian rolls!
03:43Devon has already unlocked a piece of brain, clearly the workings of a focused mind.
03:49Neil, too, has got a bit of brain.
03:54Likewise, Lottie.
03:56She may have taken her time, but it's certainly paid off.
03:59Remember, the code are braineese you're searching for is four, two, seven, seven.
04:04Because there are four red squares,
04:07two three-sided red shapes,
04:09seven blue shapes,
04:11and seven rectangles.
04:13Isabel's cracked it.
04:21As have Ushra and Jamie.
04:26It's now a straight race between Georgina and Jack for the last piece of brain,
04:30and with it, the final place in the brain jitsu dojo.
04:35But Jack still hasn't got that combination.
04:37It's now Georgina's turn.
04:45And she's done it.
04:47Jack can hardly believe it.
04:51With that last piece of brain in place,
04:53it's Jack who's left out in the cold.
04:55While seven have proven themselves worthy of entering the dojo
05:03and continuing their brain training,
05:05for Jack, it's a sad sayonara.
05:08The thing I found most difficult was just checking over the answers
05:12after I got it wrong.
05:14I'm not really sure if it was just...
05:16I was reading questions wrong or something,
05:18but I don't really know.
05:21So, with six levels to go,
05:22it's time for Devon,
05:24Neil,
05:25Lottie,
05:26Isabel,
05:27Ushra,
05:28Jamie,
05:28and Georgina
05:29to receive their yellow brain belts.
05:33That was really, really nerve-wracking
05:35because I was in the last two
05:36and I didn't think I was going to make it.
05:39I was quite confident that I could go through,
05:42but maybe there was a bit more competition there
05:45I'd really expected here.
05:47I want the black belt a lot.
05:48Because I think if I could get the black belt,
05:51I'd be really proud.
05:54Brain teeth in there!
05:56In this next level of training,
05:58things are going to get really hard.
06:01Level two.
06:02Orange belt!
06:04We do things every day without even thinking,
06:07like brushing your teeth.
06:09But, ha-ha,
06:10you try brushing them using the hand you wouldn't normally use.
06:13See how you get on.
06:15If you manage to do that,
06:16you're using part of your brain
06:18that deals with problem solving,
06:20the frontal lobes.
06:22And that's what level two is all about.
06:25Taking something you normally do
06:26without thinking
06:27and doing it differently.
06:29Work it!
06:30To prepare them for using their frontal lobes
06:33in the next challenge,
06:34my brainees are going to need some training.
06:36The room of mental nourishment.
06:41This is the room of mental nourishment,
06:43where our young hopefuls will train their brains
06:45between every task.
06:47The more seriously they take their training,
06:49they're better prepared they'll be
06:50for the challenges that lie ahead.
06:52And in level two,
06:54that challenge is all about getting the brain
06:56to think in a different way.
06:58Brain training.
06:59Take it in turns to cool out the action on your cards.
07:02Everyone has to do the opposite.
07:05OK, here are the cards.
07:06So, our brainees are going to be made to think about something,
07:09like following a simple instruction
07:11that they'd normally do without thinking.
07:13Touch mouth with right hand.
07:18Step backwards.
07:19Keep tongue in mouth.
07:25After a steady start,
07:26the pace starts to quicken
07:27and mistakes begin to creep in.
07:30Turn head right.
07:34Devin, you got it wrong.
07:35Oh, hey, time for a training tip.
07:39Don't rush.
07:40Pause for two seconds to think before you react.
07:44Top tip, Yushra.
07:45Spending a moment to think before rushing in
07:47really can improve your all-round focus.
07:50Rub stomach clockwise.
07:53If you want to work your frontal lobes,
07:55why not try this exercise with your friends?
07:59Spin around clockwise.
08:02How do our brainees feel that their training has gone?
08:05Who messes up the most?
08:07Me!
08:07I wasn't thinking, really,
08:10and then I just thought,
08:11ooh, sit down.
08:12So I just went and sat down
08:13without thinking.
08:14I did everything right.
08:17Yeah.
08:19Good for you.
08:20So, will perfect Yushra
08:22be just as perfect in the next task?
08:25Will Jamie stop and think?
08:27And will Isabel remember that training tip?
08:30Time to find out
08:32as our seven now put their frontal lobe train
08:35into the test.
08:37Guardian of the dojo
08:38and task adjudicator the Shihan
08:40will now demonstrate the level two challenge.
08:44Countdown box spot.
08:47Brainees are all given a time,
08:49say 12 seconds.
08:50They must then squat down inside the box
08:53as soon as Shihan bang-gong.
08:56Start counting.
08:57Then, when they think time is up,
09:00must jump out of the box.
09:04Brainy or brainees
09:05closest to target time
09:07will go through to next level.
09:09Brainees continue like this
09:10until only one remain
09:12and is eliminated from dojo.
09:16My brainees must remember
09:17to control their breathing.
09:19The quicker they breathe,
09:21the faster they'll count.
09:23Work those frontal lobes.
09:27The first time our brainees
09:30must count inside their heads
09:32is 21 seconds.
09:34In the darkness of their boxes,
09:36our brainees are going to have to think
09:37about passing time
09:39in a totally new way.
09:40And it will require
09:42all their powers of concentration.
09:44If you want to give your frontal lobes
09:46a workout,
09:47shut your eyes
09:47and on the gong,
09:49start counting up to 21.
09:50Then open them
09:51when you think the time is up.
09:52To make this even harder
09:58for her brainees,
09:59the she-han
10:00is going to be
10:01banging about
10:01on her bucket.
10:13And it's Jamie
10:14who pops out first,
10:15quickly followed by Neil.
10:16While last to emerge
10:21is Devon.
10:23So how close were you
10:24to that 21 seconds?
10:27Well,
10:27if you opened your eyes
10:28as Neil popped out of the box,
10:30then congratulations,
10:31because Neil
10:32was closest to the time
10:33and advances
10:34to the next level.
10:37Our six remaining brainees
10:39have another go.
10:40Again,
10:40if you want to play along
10:41at home,
10:42shut your eyes
10:43and this time on the gong,
10:44start counting to ten.
10:45It looks like her frontal lobes
11:10have gone into hibernation.
11:15No problems for Jamie,
11:19though,
11:19who's next to go through.
11:21Stop it.
11:28With each passing round,
11:29another brainee
11:30goes safely through.
11:31But Isabel's timings
11:42are still as off
11:43as a piece of dodgy sushi.
11:53It's the final round,
11:54and it's a straight battle
11:56between Isabel
11:56and perfect Yushra.
11:59The time our pair
12:00have to judge
12:00is 15 seconds.
12:02Again,
12:02if you want to play along,
12:04shut your eyes
12:04and start counting
12:05on the gong.
12:06This time Isabel
12:23is the first to emerge
12:25with Yushra
12:25just behind her.
12:28So,
12:28who has timed
12:29their passage
12:30to the next round
12:30to perfection?
12:31The answer's Yushra,
12:38which means
12:39it's Isabel
12:39who must hand over
12:40her brain belt
12:41and leave the dojo.
12:42walk of eternal dread.
12:57First,
12:57I was doing
12:58one elephant
12:58and then
12:59that didn't work,
13:00so I just did
13:01one,
13:01two,
13:02three,
13:03but that didn't work either.
13:04I feel upset,
13:06but I had a great time.
13:08So,
13:11with five levels left,
13:12it's time for
13:13Devon,
13:14Neil,
13:15Lottie,
13:16Yushra,
13:17Jamie,
13:18and Georgina
13:19to get their
13:20orange brain belts.
13:21It was very exciting,
13:22but it was very tense
13:23because it was me
13:24and Isabel
13:25at the last round
13:26and when she got out
13:28I was quite surprised.
13:29Messing up in the training
13:30didn't really help at all.
13:31It sort of lowered
13:32my confidence quite a lot,
13:33but now that I've gotten
13:34through to the next stage,
13:36I've got a really good
13:37comfort and boost.
13:38Brain T2
13:41Brainy,
13:44not so brainy.
13:47Who's the clever clogs
13:48and whose brain
13:49needs a lot more training?
13:511903.
13:52Two American brothers,
13:53Orville and Wilbur,
13:54have a go at flying.
13:56Impressed?
13:56You should be.
13:57Inspired by a toy helicopter
13:59made from a few bits
14:00of wood and a rubber band,
14:01the brothers only went
14:02and invented
14:03the first passenger plane.
14:04Without the Wright brothers,
14:06you would never
14:06have had this,
14:07this or this.
14:09Thanks, Wright brothers,
14:10I'm off to Sonny's fame.
14:12Now,
14:12take a look at these chaps.
14:14Every year,
14:14they earl themselves
14:15off Bognar Pier.
14:17The rules are simple,
14:18fly the furthest
14:18and win a cash prize.
14:20Come on, son,
14:21you can do it.
14:22Oh dear,
14:22back to the drawing board
14:23with you, mate.
14:25Brainy,
14:26the Wright brothers,
14:27not so brainy,
14:28Bird Brain Bird Men
14:29and the Bognar.
14:32Rain,
14:33Tickle.
14:35Competition in
14:36Brain Jitsu Dojo
14:37hotting up.
14:38Only six brainy
14:39now remain
14:40to battle it out
14:41on the watchful eye
14:42of Shihan.
14:43Jamie,
14:44solid in every level.
14:46Devon,
14:46first to enter Dojo.
14:48The training has helped me
14:49because it tells me
14:51to use different parts
14:51of my brain.
14:52Confident,
14:53Neil.
14:54Quiet,
14:54calm,
14:54Lottie,
14:55dark horse of groove.
14:56I really,
14:57really want this
14:57black belt
14:58and I'm going to win.
15:00So Gina,
15:00you got it wrong.
15:01Oh.
15:03And perfect Yushra.
15:05I did everything right.
15:08You're not perfect.
15:09Yeah.
15:10Good for you.
15:12Challenges about to get
15:13even tougher.
15:14Only two brainy
15:15will make it
15:15to final test.
15:17Table of supreme focus.
15:18Where?
15:19Must move ball
15:20with power of mind.
15:21For chance to win,
15:22Brain Jitsu
15:23Black Brain Belt
15:24is time for...
15:26Level 3.
15:28With that.
15:30Now,
15:30we all like to chat,
15:32but did you know
15:33that using words
15:34to communicate
15:35is one of the main reasons
15:36why our brains
15:37have grown
15:38so incredibly powerful
15:39and that having a conversation
15:41exercises
15:42both halves
15:43of the brain.
15:44Now,
15:45if all that's doing
15:46your head in,
15:46allow me to explain.
15:49Think of it
15:50like a football match.
15:51A player
15:52is focused
15:53on his own performance,
15:54but
15:54the manager,
15:55he has to think
15:56about all his players.
15:58That's it, Alex.
15:59All the way.
16:00It's the same
16:01with the brain.
16:02There's the left half,
16:03which deals with the details,
16:04and there's the right half,
16:06which looks at
16:06the overall picture.
16:08This next level
16:09of training
16:10strengthens my
16:11brainy's focus
16:12by working
16:13one half of their brain
16:14under pressure.
16:16Hey,
16:16pump it up!
16:17The Room
16:19of Mental
16:20Nourishment
16:21It's our brainy's
16:23second visit
16:24to the Room
16:24of Mental
16:25Nourishment,
16:25where once more
16:26they'll train
16:27their brains
16:27in preparation
16:28for the next challenge,
16:29which,
16:30remember,
16:30is all about
16:31using the two
16:31halves of the brain
16:32to communicate.
16:36Brain training.
16:37Get into pairs.
16:39Direct the blindfolded
16:40brainy
16:41to stack the blocks
16:42using only one hand.
16:45Hmm,
16:45sounds tricky.
16:46How will our brainy's
16:47get on?
16:48Maybe for Neil.
16:49Okay.
16:50Hand up.
16:51Hand up.
16:52Forward.
16:53So you've got to
16:53put it on its side.
16:55And then another one
16:57next to that one.
16:59Lottie and Neil
17:00get off to a good start.
17:01Quiet,
17:01calm Lottie
17:02using the right side
17:03of her brain
17:04to give her partner
17:05good,
17:05clear instructions.
17:08No,
17:09other side of it,
17:10other side of it.
17:11Yeah.
17:11Up there!
17:11Up there!
17:12Up there!
17:14Up there!
17:14Meanwhile,
17:15what Yushra's
17:16instructions lack
17:16in detail,
17:17they make up for
17:18in volume.
17:19No,
17:19don't knock it over!
17:21Put it on top.
17:23Not bad,
17:24but will a training tip
17:25help our brainy's
17:26to add a few
17:26extra floors
17:27onto their skyscrapers?
17:30Use short,
17:31clear instructions.
17:32Imagine yourself
17:33hearing them.
17:34Shall we try again,
17:35then?
17:36Okay.
17:37In other words,
17:38what our guiders
17:39need to do
17:40is imagine
17:40what information
17:41their partners need
17:42because good communication
17:44means putting yourself
17:45in someone else's shoes.
17:47Now,
17:47up,
17:48yeah,
17:49perfect.
17:50Up,
17:50up,
17:51now to your left,
17:52right,
17:53I mean to your left.
17:54Sorry,
17:54my left.
17:55And once again,
17:56it's Lottie
17:56who's taken this idea
17:58on board the quickest.
17:59Neil's tower
18:00rising rapidly
18:01from the rubble.
18:02Do it!
18:03So how do our three
18:05listeners think
18:06their partners did?
18:08Yeah,
18:08Lottie was giving
18:09quite clear instructions
18:11and I sort of had
18:12a good feel
18:13about where
18:14everything was
18:15in general.
18:16Yushra's a very
18:17good partner,
18:18but she kept saying
18:20turn and going,
18:21what way?
18:22Devon was being
18:23a bit clearer
18:24after he read the tip,
18:25but he was very good
18:25to begin with anyway.
18:27So,
18:28will Yushra
18:28find her sense
18:29of direction?
18:31And will quiet,
18:32calm Lottie
18:33remember?
18:33her training
18:34once inside
18:34the dojo.
18:36Time to find out
18:38as they now
18:38put their training
18:39to the test
18:39for those five
18:40green brain belts.
18:45Barrow tip
18:46two maths,
18:47quick!
18:48This is test
18:49of communication skill,
18:51so six brainy
18:52must first divide
18:53into teams of two
18:54by drawing chopsticks.
19:00Quickly as possible,
19:01team must tip
19:02over six barrel
19:03over six barrel
19:03containing number
19:04that go together
19:05to make some.
19:06Pairs need to decide
19:08who is guider,
19:09who is tipper.
19:10As tippers
19:11will be blindfolded,
19:12they will be relying
19:13on guider
19:14to help them find barrel.
19:17Once all six
19:18have been tipped,
19:20brainies stop clock
19:21by shouting,
19:21brinjitzu.
19:22Quicker they up
19:24end barrels,
19:25more time to pick up
19:26number and make some.
19:29When brainy happy
19:30with answer,
19:31hit gong!
19:34First two teams
19:35to work out
19:36correct answer
19:37will get green belt
19:38and advance
19:39to next level.
19:40One brainy
19:41from losing team
19:42will be eliminated.
19:43The key to success
19:45here is for the guider
19:46to use the right
19:47side of their brain
19:48to follow their
19:49team mate's progress
19:51and give them
19:51clear instructions.
19:53For their partner,
19:54it's vital
19:55they use the left
19:57side of their brain
19:58to focus on
19:59these instructions
19:59and nothing else.
20:01First to put
20:06their communication
20:06training to the test
20:07are Devon and Neil
20:09with guider Neil
20:10working the right
20:11side of his brain
20:12and Devon the left.
20:13The boys get off
20:14to a cracking start.
20:18It's all very well
20:19saying step forwards
20:20but by how much?
20:26While Neil is
20:27giving his partner
20:28short, clear instructions
20:29they're lacking
20:30in a bit of detail.
20:31Tip, forward, tip, reach up high, tip, reach up towards your right, tip, brain jitsu.
20:46The boys stop the clock in 2 minutes 4 seconds
20:48but they'll have to wait
20:49to find out how much extra time
20:51it's bought them
20:51to make their sum.
20:55Next, it's the pink team
20:56of Lottie and Yushra.
20:59Forward, to your left.
21:02In training
21:03Lottie was one of the best
21:04at giving instructions.
21:05Other hand
21:06tip
21:07And it looks as though
21:09she's using the right side
21:10of her brain
21:11equally well here.
21:12Tip
21:12Okay, hand up
21:15tip
21:16forwards
21:18to your left
21:19put your right hand up
21:21okay
21:22tip
21:23brain jitsu.
21:24Tipping their last barrel
21:26in 1 minute 6 seconds
21:28the pair finished
21:29the pair finished almost a full minute quicker than Neil and Devon
21:31talk about girl power
21:33Last to tip are James and Georgina
21:38Long step forward
21:39reach your left hand up
21:42pull
21:43and it's a good start
21:46move your left hand up
21:49turn back a bit
21:50but Georgina's soon clutching at thin air
21:53bit
21:55move your left hand back a bit
21:58okay
21:59there
22:00tip
22:00step
22:02forwards
22:03nope
22:06not that one
22:06there's one just next to it
22:07yes
22:08that's the one
22:09tip
22:09nope
22:10not that one
22:11The team have also been thrown by one or two of the decoy ropes
22:15which aren't attached to a barrel
22:16this one
22:17tip
22:17long step to the left
22:20now lift your right hand up
22:22forwards
22:24yeah
22:24pull
22:26brain jitsu
22:28at last the pair stopped the clock at 1 minute 59 seconds
22:32the quickest to tip all their barrels
22:36it's Lottie and Yushra
22:37who set off first to find their numbers
22:39here's what our brainies are looking for
22:46see if you can work out the sum
22:48remember the first two teams to work it out
22:50will go through to the next level
22:51okay we've got five
22:54Yushra and Lottie are first to bang the gong
23:03just ahead of Neil and Devin
23:05with Jamie and Georgina trailing behind
23:07but do the sums add up
23:12first Lottie and Yushra
23:1530 minus 15 plus 13 equals 28
23:19that looks good
23:21their numbers may be in a different order
23:26but Neil and Devin have also made their sum
23:28it looks as though all our teams have found the right answer
23:37but as the last to finish
23:40it's Jamie and Georgina
23:41who'll be battling it out
23:43to avoid the elimination
23:44in the
23:45step
23:46but with just one green belt up for grabs
23:49both brainies must use all their powers of focus
23:52to fight the urge to blink
23:54the first to falter
23:55will be eliminated
23:56oh and it's Georgina
24:07who can resist no longer
24:09while Jamie lives to fight another day
24:11for Georgina
24:12it's time to hand over her orange brain belt
24:15and leave the dojo
24:16walk of eternal regret
24:21we weren't fast enough in the beginning doing the sum
24:25and we got it wrong
24:26but I didn't actually do the sum
24:29Jamie did
24:30I just think Yushra will win
24:33because she's a strong character
24:36and I think she's really good at all the tasks so far
24:39so with four levels to go
24:45it's Devin
24:45Neil
24:46Lottie
24:47Yushra
24:48and Jamie
24:49who line up for their green belts
24:51the technique I used for the stare-off was
24:54to blink a lot beforehand
24:56and then just focus
24:57I was really pleased I was picked with Lottie
25:00because the way in the training
25:01she done really good
25:03I think the girls are definitely better
25:04this fourth level requires our brain ease
25:17to master a primitive part of the brain
25:19called the amygdala
25:20the area that responds to threat
25:23remember the last time you felt afraid or panicky
25:30maybe you'd just seen a spider
25:31well that feeling was triggered by the old amygdala
25:36now stress can make you lose focus
25:39fact
25:40which is why my brain ease
25:42must train to keep their emotions under control
25:46prepare to harness the power of the mind
25:50the room of mental nourishment
25:53we're back in the room of mental nourishment
25:56where our five remaining green belt holders
25:59are about to train in how to overcome their fears
26:01and stay focused
26:03form a circle
26:06pass the disgusting brain boost drink
26:08around the circle
26:09only passing it on when you have said a different colour
26:11after one minute
26:13the brainy holding the drink has to drink it
26:15alright everybody
26:16let's do this
26:18so our brain ease must block out the fact
26:20that they might cop a mouthful of revolting seaweed
26:23and concentrate only on coming up with a new colour
26:26it's time to train
26:28a million
26:30perfect usher starts the ball rolling
26:33and one by one
26:34her fellow brain ease follow
26:36indigo
26:37bloom
26:38adding more colours than a DIY superstore
26:41burgundy
26:43but as the clock ticks down
26:44it's Jamie
26:48who must knock back the drink of stink
26:50just drink a tiny bit
26:52get some water as well
26:53drink it all
26:56take the water
26:56take the water
26:57take the water
26:58time for a tip
26:59block out your fears
27:01and do not look at the drink
27:03a million
27:04our brainy start again
27:06this time
27:07doing their best to avoid eye contact
27:10with a glass of gloop
27:11ignoring your fears like this
27:13allows you to keep your emotions under control
27:15and helps with your focus
27:16in almost any situation
27:17but perfect Yushra seems to have forgotten her own tip already
27:24literally unable to tear her eyes away
27:27the gong signs for a second time
27:31and it's Yushra who must pay the price for letting her amygdala take control
27:36ooh that's disgusting
27:43it was quite difficult to think of the colours
27:47especially while you were holding the drink
27:49because the thought of drinking that is horrible
27:54this tasted like mouldy fish
27:57so will perfect Yushra be able to master her amygdala in time for the next task
28:03can quiet calm Lottis stop her mind from going blank
28:08and will the taste of that seaweed stop Jamie from finding his focus
28:13it's time to find out
28:16as our five put their brain training to the test
28:19in a fear filled challenge
28:20that will decide who gets their blue brain belts
28:23creepy crawly word grab
28:26this level real test of mind over matter for brainies
28:31and will push them to really overcome their fear
28:34underneath the creepy crawlies
28:35lie an assortment of letters worth different points
28:38brainies have just one minute to plunge hands into tank
28:42and pick out up to seven letters each
28:44they then have a further minute
28:46to make higher scoring words they can
28:49to do well my brainies must block out the signals coming from their amygdala
28:56and ignore the creepy crawlies
28:58the quicker they combat their fear
29:00the more time they'll have to pick out the high scoring letters
29:03underneath the pile of worms are an extra five golden letters
29:18if our brainies manage to use one in their word
29:21they'll double the score
29:22our brainies dive straight in
29:34even Yushra after that hesitant performance during training
29:37is doing her best to keep her amygdala under control
29:40while Devon seems happy taking his time
29:44Jamie's tactic would appear to involve grabbing anything in sight
29:48quiet calm Lottie meanwhile has found one of the golden letters
29:53if she can now just make a word
29:55she'll double her score
29:56the time's up
30:01our brainies now have a further minute
30:03to make the highest scoring word they can from their letters
30:06Devon might have grabbed himself a few extra letters
30:09but they're all low scoring
30:11will he pay for his pickiness
30:13with four letter words
30:17for each of Jamie, Yushra and confident Neil
30:20it looks as though this one
30:21might go down to the wire
30:23in fact only Lottie
30:25with her golden letter
30:26would appear to be truly safe
30:28see if you can make a word
30:31from the anagram
30:31at the bottom of the screen now
30:33and there's the second gong
30:42how have our brainies done?
30:47beg
30:48with just three scoring letters
30:51that's a disappointing six points for Devon
30:53head
30:55that's seven points for Neil
30:57week
31:00and a whopping 14 for Lottie
31:03thanks to that golden W
31:04boy
31:07like Neil
31:09that's also seven
31:10for perfect Yushra
31:11home
31:12and finally
31:14a respectable eight points for Jamie
31:16all of which means
31:19that it's Devon
31:20with just a measly six points
31:21who must leave the dojo
31:23walk of eternal regret
31:29I think it went wrong
31:31because
31:31there was
31:32worms in there
31:33that were
31:34really putting me off
31:36they were just disgusting
31:37I'm feeling quite depressed
31:40because I thought
31:40I could have done a lot better
31:41so with only three levels left
31:47those who use their minds
31:48to master the worms
31:49are duly rewarded
31:50with their blue belts
31:51after that last game
31:54I have much more confidence
31:55the next round
31:56I think Yushra
31:57is now my biggest contender
31:59we have that rivalry between us
32:01and generally I just want to beat her
32:04really
32:04brain titan
32:07brainy
32:10not so brainy
32:12who's the clever clogs
32:15and whose brain needs a lot more training
32:17ah the good old toilet
32:19the WC
32:19what would we do without it
32:21let's not go there
32:22most people credit a British plumber
32:24called Thomas Crapper
32:25with the invention
32:25but actually
32:26the idea of the toilet
32:28was first hatched
32:29just over 400 years ago
32:30when a geezer
32:31John Harrington
32:32installed one
32:33in his godmother's house
32:34her name
32:35Elizabeth I
32:36well you can't blame a queen
32:37for wanting to be ladylike
32:39another name for toilet
32:40is bog
32:41and for the last 20 years
32:42hundreds of hopefuls
32:43have been headed for Wales
32:44come summer time
32:45with dreams of becoming
32:46the world bog snorkelling champion
32:48oh bog off
32:49rainy
32:50Sir John Harrington
32:51not sobriety
32:52bog snorkellers
32:54brain titan
32:57tension in brain jutsu dojo
33:01mounting
33:01as now
33:02just four young hopeful
33:03remain
33:04to compete under
33:05watchful eye of sheehan
33:06I was quite confident
33:09that I could go through
33:10determined jamie
33:12and perfect yusha
33:14I'm very excited
33:16because so far
33:17I've been doing really good
33:18also quiet calm lottie
33:21after that last game
33:22I have much more confidence
33:23for the next round
33:24only two brainy
33:27will make final showdown
33:28table of supreme forecast
33:30where
33:30must move ball
33:31with power of mind
33:33renjutsu black brain belt
33:35is within the grasp
33:36it is time for
33:37level 5
33:39red belt
33:40now
33:42if you're learning
33:43how to bull ride
33:43then
33:44you might be interested
33:45to know
33:45that your new hobby
33:46is doing wonders
33:48for your old grey matter
33:49exercising both
33:51the thinking part
33:52of the brain
33:53the cerebrum
33:54and
33:54the doing part
33:55the cerebellum
33:57you see
33:58doing new things
33:59increases the flow
34:00of blood
34:00into your head
34:01which keeps
34:02your brain cells
34:03topped up
34:04with the oxygen
34:04they need
34:05to perform
34:06at their best
34:07so
34:07in level 5
34:08my brainees
34:09are going to be challenged
34:11to learn new skills
34:12now
34:13you can speed up
34:14how quickly
34:15the brain
34:15takes in new stuff
34:17and this is what
34:18our brainees
34:19are going to train
34:19for now
34:20the room
34:21of mental
34:23nourishment
34:24it's our brainees
34:26fourth visit
34:27to the room
34:27of mental nourishment
34:28where they'll be
34:29training their brains
34:30in how to learn
34:31new skills
34:31brain training
34:35juggle the two balls
34:37using a hand
34:38one hand
34:39one
34:40for as long
34:41as possible
34:42sounds difficult
34:43time to clear the decks
34:45ok right
34:47who can juggle here
34:48not me
34:49I can't
34:50press us
34:51one hand
34:52you don't have to use
34:54both balls
34:54the idea
34:56is you throw one up
34:57then you throw
34:59another one up
34:59then you catch the first
35:01and chuck it up again
35:02before you catch the second one
35:04well that's the theory
35:06Neil
35:06the tricky bit
35:07is put into practice
35:08oh great
35:09it's landed
35:10in the polar water
35:11Neil you're the worst
35:13you can't do anything right
35:15hey watch it
35:16given that our brainees
35:18are finding this new skill
35:19harder than making
35:20an origami space shuttle
35:21you'd think their focus
35:23levels would be stratospheric
35:24but I've seen more focus
35:26squinting through a pair
35:27of milk bottles
35:28time for a trading tip
35:32have confidence
35:33compliment each other
35:35lovely
35:36the next time you face
35:39a tough mental challenge
35:41approach it in a positive way
35:42by remaining confident
35:44you're much more likely
35:45to succeed
35:46you're very good
35:47at dropping the balls
35:48Neil
35:48I think the card said
35:51to compliment one another
35:52you sure
35:52David I think
35:54you're getting much better
35:55that's more like it
35:56Lottie
35:57I think you're going to do
35:58really well in the next
35:59challenge Neil
35:59thank you Lottie
36:01it's a shame
36:01I can't agree
36:02ouch
36:04it was quite hard to compliment
36:07you sure
36:07we have like this war
36:08going on against her
36:09she's got quite a lot
36:11of confidence
36:11and I think I do too
36:12I think her confidence
36:14is a bit misplaced though
36:16so will confident Neil
36:23and perfect you sure
36:24be able to put aside
36:25their rivalry
36:26long enough
36:26to get through
36:27to the next round
36:28or will quiet
36:30calm Lottie's
36:31positive outlook
36:32give her the edge
36:33only time will tell
36:35as our four now
36:37put their new
36:37skills training
36:38to the test
36:39and compete
36:39for their red
36:40brain belts
36:41mind maze
36:45to win red belt
36:48brainies must remain
36:49mentally confident
36:50as they learn
36:51new physical skill
36:52brainie must guide
36:54marble to end of maze
36:56on their helmet
36:57by tilting head
36:58using the screen
36:59in front of them
37:00as guide
37:01but there is twist
37:03image they are seeing
37:04is in reverse
37:05that mean
37:07to go right
37:08they must tilt left
37:09what is more
37:10brainie is up
37:12against clock
37:12brainie with
37:14slowest time
37:14will be eliminated
37:16the tip for my
37:17brainies
37:18in this next task
37:19is to
37:19remain calm
37:22and think
37:22positive thoughts
37:23giving in to frustration
37:25will only lessen
37:26their focus
37:27and slow them up
37:28confident Neil
37:30is the first
37:31to get the ball rolling
37:32and it's a pretty
37:37good start
37:38the young brainie
37:40working his
37:41cerebellum
37:41and his cerebrum
37:42with great skill
37:43but I don't think
37:46you want to go
37:47that way Neil
37:47this is confusing
37:56next is quiet
38:01calm Lottie
38:01in her training
38:02she found that
38:03thinking positively
38:04really helped her
38:05to learn a new skill
38:06but after a promising
38:09start
38:10she quickly
38:10runs into trouble
38:11like a tourist
38:16in Tokyo
38:17Lottie seems to
38:18have lost
38:18all sense of direction
38:20remember
38:22you need to
38:23think in reverse
38:23so
38:24next time
38:25tilt forwards
38:26not back
38:27oh dear
38:29at last
38:38Lottie reaches
38:38the finish
38:39but will her
38:40mental tailspin
38:41have cost her
38:41that red belt
38:42you should
38:46meanwhile
38:47is having trouble
38:48right from the start
38:49the secret here
38:52is to remember
38:53to stay positive
38:54and let your mind
38:55guide your body
38:56and she's off
38:58navigating her way
38:59round the maze
39:00like a rickshaw
39:01during rush hour
39:02last up is Jamie
39:12who like Ushra
39:13is finding it hard
39:14to get going
39:15will his training
39:19kick in
39:20not that way
39:22Jamie
39:23there's the gong
39:29the wipe of the brow
39:30reveals just how
39:31mentally demanding
39:32that really was
39:33that was tense
39:34so which of our
39:37brainies
39:38was most phased
39:39by the maze
39:39Neil
39:4143 seconds
39:43Lottie
39:461 minute
39:4651 seconds
39:48Ushra
39:5042 seconds
39:52and Jamie
39:541 minute
39:5416 seconds
39:56and so Ushra
39:58just pips
39:58Neil to win
39:59by a single second
40:01while for Lottie
40:02it's a sad
40:03sayonara
40:03as she hands
40:04over her brain
40:05belt
40:05and exits
40:06the dojo
40:07walk of eternal
40:13regret
40:14I found the training
40:16quite easy
40:17but the challenge
40:17was much harder
40:18I'm sad to go
40:20but I'll remember it
40:21for the rest of my life
40:21so with two levels
40:24to go
40:25that now just leaves
40:26Neil
40:26Ushra
40:27and Jamie
40:28to receive their
40:29red brain belts
40:30I was quite confident
40:32so I think the tip
40:34in brain training
40:35really helped me
40:36Neil is really
40:37the one I'm worried
40:38about
40:38I'm not that worried
40:38about Ushra
40:39because I don't think
40:40she'll get to the final
40:42brain teeter
40:45it's this level
40:51which will decide
40:53which two
40:54of my remaining
40:54brainies
40:55will go on
40:56to battle it out
40:57for the black belt
40:59imagine you're
41:01performing a dance
41:02as well as you
41:03move to remember
41:04there's the other
41:04dancer to think about
41:05and there's loads
41:06of people watching you
41:07it's remembering
41:08things under pressure
41:09like this
41:09that level 6
41:10is all about
41:11it centres
41:13around three areas
41:14of the brain
41:15the seeing part
41:16the occipital lobes
41:18the memory part
41:19the temporal lobes
41:21and the movement part
41:23the cerebellum
41:24to the max
41:26the room
41:27of mental
41:28nourishment
41:30final here we come
41:33our brainies
41:34are back in the room
41:35of mental nourishment
41:36this time for some
41:37memory training
41:38brain training
41:40memorise the sequence
41:41of the objects
41:43mouse
41:44banana
41:44snake
41:45eiffel tower
41:46mouse
41:47banana
41:47snake
41:48poison
41:49so guys
41:51should we
41:52turn around
41:53oh yeah
41:54that might help
41:56monster
41:58arm
41:59fly swat
42:00fried eggs
42:01sunglasses
42:02eyeball
42:03frog
42:04mouse
42:05banana
42:06snake
42:07eiffel tower
42:09toilet
42:09very good
42:11chaps
42:11and what about
42:12you
42:12Shra
42:12cabbage
42:14no cheating
42:15you
42:15Shra
42:15cabbage
42:16cabbage
42:18hammer
42:19photo frame
42:20wand
42:21and poison
42:22you took the longest out of all three of us
42:28because I remember it was that way
42:31I remember it was that way too
42:33well I remember it was that way
42:34oh no not another argument
42:36quick where's the training tip
42:38there
42:38well it was your idea
42:39create a story linking the objects together
42:44right let's swap
42:45right let's swap them
42:45memory training like this isn't just great for the brain
42:48it's also very useful
42:50next time you're going shopping
42:51create a story out of your list
42:53and see if you can remember everything on it
42:55in the eiffel tower
42:57there was a toilet
42:58where a rat lived
43:00called Barry
43:00he wore sunglasses
43:02and had a spatula
43:03he had a picture of his wife in a pink fluffy frame
43:05he ate cabbage
43:07he was attacked by a snake
43:09and she lost his arm
43:10but then he grabbed a hammer
43:12and some poison
43:15and the magic wand
43:16and turned the snake into bananas
43:20and a frog
43:22then he went home and ate some fried eggs
43:24that was just weird
43:26it might not be JK Rowling
43:29but as their story helped our brainies
43:31memorise those objects
43:32in the eiffel tower
43:34there was a loo
43:35and a mask called Barry lived in there
43:38he had a
43:39there was two things
43:41he
43:41no
43:42he had a
43:43no he had glasses
43:44and he had a wand
43:45no
43:46a spatula
43:47he had one arm
43:48once again
43:49Eusher's temporal lobes let her down
43:51he was attacked by a snake
43:53and lost his arm
43:54but then he picked up a hammer
43:57and a magic wand
43:58and turned the snake
44:00into some bananas
44:02while the boys appeared to have their memory licked
44:05to his friend Jumpy
44:07and had a fried egg
44:08but I'm good at memorising stuff
44:11just not stories
44:12personally I think Eusher's gonna go out
44:15I've given up arguing with you two
44:17let's just see what happens
44:19she's given up
44:20well done Jimmy
44:20will Eusher master her memory in time
44:25to make it through to the next level
44:27or will her arch rivals
44:29confident Neil
44:30and determined Jamie
44:31prove just too strong
44:33it's time to find out
44:35as our three red belt holders
44:37put their training to the test
44:39super memory dizzy dance
44:43rainy is spin round and round
44:47on dizzy wheel
44:48total of ten time
44:49task is to use all power of focus
44:52to memorise five zoomed in picture
44:55in front of them
44:56then race against clock
44:58to cross balancing beam
45:00and collect full sized version
45:02of same image
45:03from ten hanging above them
45:05then they must arrange
45:08in order that they have seen
45:09from the wheel
45:10when Brainy is happy with selection
45:13hit gong
45:14to stop clock
45:15my tip for the Brainy's
45:20is to keep focused
45:21on the main objective
45:22and use their training
45:24to link the five images together
45:26so our final three
45:29brave the wheel
45:30to compete for their brown brain belts
45:32and their chance of a place
45:33at the table of supreme focus
45:35it's time to spin
45:36will their memory training
45:41help our Brainy's
45:42to remember the images
45:43and ignore the effects
45:44of being spun round
45:45like slugs and cement mixer
45:46the pictures they're looking for
45:48are at the bottom of the screen now
45:50looking a little unsteady
45:56confident Neil wobbles off
45:57but I don't recall
46:01seeing one of those
46:02don't forget
46:04our Brainy's
46:05must fight their dizziness
46:06and remember the five images
46:07they saw on the wheel
46:08some of which
46:09look very similar
46:10for every one they get wrong
46:12it's a five second penalty
46:14the Brainy
46:15with the slowest time
46:16will be eliminated
46:17from the dojo
46:18he is the right order again
46:21and it looks like
46:22Neil has hooked himself
46:23a couple of red earrings
46:25those fish might look the same
46:34but look closely
46:35and you'll see
46:36they're subtly different
46:38perfect Yusra
46:42is next to step off
46:43the dizzy wheel
46:44has their training
46:45helped to remember
46:46those images
46:47it might well have
46:50but if you don't get a move on
46:51then it won't matter
46:52if Yusra's remembered
46:53them all or not
46:54as it turns out
47:06Yusra's memory
47:07is not up to much either
47:08she's even forgotten
47:09that there are five images
47:11to collect
47:11not four
47:12last but not least
47:33it's determined Jamie
47:34faster than you can say
47:40crispy California rolls
47:41Jamie grabs his five images
47:43but are they the right ones
47:44here's the order now
47:54and like the others
47:55it looks as though
47:56Jamie might be adding
47:57some penalties
47:58to his overall time
47:59so who's remembered
48:02enough of their training
48:03to secure their place
48:04in that final
48:05let's find out
48:06Neil finished in
48:08one minute 43 seconds
48:10but with three penalties
48:11his total time
48:12was one minute 58
48:14Yusra only picked up
48:17two penalties
48:18but still enough
48:19to give her an overall time
48:20of two minutes 17 seconds
48:23while Jamie
48:24despite his four penalties
48:25raced around fast enough
48:27to give him a total time
48:28of one minute 20
48:29which means it's perfect
48:32Yusra who must hand over
48:34her brain belt
48:35and leave the dojo
48:36walk of eternal regret
48:43it all went wrong
48:44where we were spinning
48:46round because it was
48:47a bit too fast
48:48so I completely forgot
48:49about everything
48:50I'm feeling quite
48:51disappointed
48:52but I'm also quite happy
48:54that I'm at least
48:55in the top three
48:56and that's what I wanted
48:57to be
48:57so with just one level
49:02to go that only leaves
49:03confident Neil
49:04and determined Jamie
49:05to don their
49:06brown brain belt
49:07and prepare for
49:08the final showdown
49:09I'm quite confident
49:11about the table
49:11of supreme focus
49:12because I'm very good
49:14at just focusing
49:15and keeping my mind
49:15on something
49:16I really really badly
49:18want that black belt
49:19Brain Jitsu
49:22Eight young hopefuls
49:25arrived at
49:26Brain Jitsu Dojo
49:27to fight it out
49:28for Brain Jitsu
49:29Black Brain Belt
49:30As training got tougher
49:33so brainies fell by wayside
49:35some lack focus
49:36others speed
49:38now only two remain
49:40confident Neil
49:41stronger each level
49:42I was quite confident
49:44that I could go through
49:45and determined Jamie
49:47winner of three tasks
49:49so far
49:49Neil is really the one
49:50I'm worried about
49:51but who will use
49:53brain training
49:54to the max
49:55to win last challenge
49:56level seven
49:58Black Belt
49:59so this is it
50:03between my two remaining
50:05brainies
50:05and the black belt
50:06stands Brain Jitsu's
50:08ultimate challenge
50:09a mental duel
50:11that is head to head
50:12in every sense
50:14the battlefield
50:15a table
50:16but not just any table
50:18for this my friends
50:19is the table
50:20of supreme focus
50:22where our two brainies
50:24will attempt to move a ball
50:25across the table
50:26using only
50:27the power
50:29of their mind
50:30by getting this far
50:31they've already demonstrated
50:33mental control
50:34under many different
50:35types of pressure
50:36but now
50:37they must learn
50:38to focus their minds
50:39by entering a state
50:40of total calm
50:42to prepare them
50:43my two finalists
50:45will need to get into
50:45the zone
50:47Room of Mental Nourishment
50:50In this
50:52the final visit
50:53to the room
50:53of mental nourishment
50:54our last two brainies
50:56are about to train
50:57in how to stay focused
50:58no matter what's
50:59happening around them
51:00Brain training
51:03mentally prepare yourself
51:05for the final task
51:06don't let the sounds
51:08put you off
51:08ok
51:09so every two finalists
51:17have to block out
51:18the noises
51:18and concentrate
51:19only on finding
51:21their focus
51:22while confident
51:24Neil resorts
51:25to shutting his eyes
51:26determined Jamie
51:27appears to have
51:28entered a trance
51:29it looks like
51:31neither are going
51:32to let themselves
51:33become distracted
51:34interesting
51:38visualise and focus
51:42on somewhere
51:42you feel happy
51:44and calm
51:44thinking beach
51:46and sea
51:47that should do it
51:49I'd say
51:50with both brainies
51:59looking cooler
52:00than a kimono
52:00in a heat wave
52:01it looks like
52:02we're in for a
52:03real mental battle
52:04I do think
52:06I'm focused
52:06at this point
52:07already
52:07the tip helped
52:08a bit
52:09but I don't think
52:09it was really
52:10necessary
52:11it's a 50-50 chance
52:13for both of us
52:14better be me
52:15yeah
52:15bring on the pain
52:16then Jamie
52:17bring it on
52:19to survive
52:21the table of
52:21supreme focus
52:22and win the
52:23black brain belt
52:23our brainies
52:24must now put
52:25all their brain
52:26training to their
52:27test
52:27will confident
52:28Neil's positive
52:29outlook
52:29get him that
52:30elusive black belt
52:31or will determine
52:34Jamie block his way
52:36let's find out
52:38table of supreme focus
52:43rules are simple
52:46each brainy must push ball
52:48to the opponent's end of table
52:50using only power of mind
52:52sensors in brainy's headbands
52:55measure brainwaves
52:56this is converted into electrical signal
52:58which moves ball
53:00more focused mind
53:02stronger signal
53:03and faster ball will travel
53:05see how brainies are doing on this readout
53:09two lines represent each player's brainwaves
53:12lower the line
53:13more concentrated their mind
53:15to make sure this is the test of all tests
53:23our brainies must win the best of three rounds
53:25so this is the big one
53:36where two finalists
53:39must use all their brain training
53:41to enter their zone
53:42of absolute focus
53:44this is the reason
53:46they came to the dojo
53:47this is the moment
53:49they've been training for
53:50and they're off
53:54at first both brainy
53:57seem pretty evenly matched
53:59but eventually
54:03it's determined Jamie
54:05who gets the ball rolling
54:06his lower black line
54:09on the readout
54:10showing that he's the one
54:11who's just got the mental edge
54:13it's 1-0 to Jamie
54:27and confident Neil
54:28now faces an uphill battle
54:30will he remember his training
54:35and find his focus
54:36the pressure's really on
54:38but once again it's Jamie
54:50whose powers of concentration shine through
54:52pushing the ball towards his opponent
54:54in one go
54:55it's all over
55:04and it's determined Jamie
55:05who has come out on top
55:07drawing on all his brain training
55:10when it really mattered
55:11this young master of the mind
55:13has truly shown himself
55:15to be a worthy winner
55:16of the brain jitsu black belt
55:18I feel just amazing
55:19to have won the black belt
55:20it's just about the biggest thing
55:22I've ever won in my life
55:23but triumph for one
55:26brings disappointment for another
55:27and although he fought well
55:29Neil must now leave the dojo
55:31war of eternal regret
55:40everything's so tense in the final
55:42it is really really hard
55:44to just conjure up
55:45a way to totally let go
55:48after the first round
55:50I just felt a bit shattered
55:51and I didn't really know
55:54how to get past Jamie
55:55what a display of brain power
56:05from determined Jamie
56:06calling on all his training
56:08when it really mattered
56:09this tough competitor
56:11found just that extra bit of focus
56:13to get one over on his rival
56:15Neil
56:15and grab the black brain belt
56:18yes
56:18come on
56:21that game was just about
56:22the most tense game
56:24I've ever played in my life
56:25I just concentrated on the ball
56:27and nothing else
56:29I'm just about as proud
56:30as I could be of myself right now
56:32our journey has come to an end
56:35another brainy
56:36has proven themselves worthy
56:38to wear the brain jitsu black belt
56:40but while brain jitsu
56:42might represent the most extreme form
56:45of brain training
56:46its philosophy can be shared
56:48by all
56:49each and every one of you
56:51has it in your power
56:53to grow your mind
56:54all it takes
56:56dedication
56:57and practice
56:58this has been
57:00Brain Jitsu
