00:00CBBC would like to state that no braineese or insects were harmed in the making of this program
00:04and that none of the training you're about to see be attempted unless under expert supervision.
00:10Eight braineese, one challenge.
00:13To use complex mass of 100 billion cells we call Brain
00:17for chance to win Brain Jutsu Black Brain Belt.
00:20This is Brain Jutsu.
00:23Born in Lancashire, trained in Japan, with mind as sharp as samurai sword,
00:34he is brain master, he is the sensei.
00:38Konnichiwa, and welcome to Brain Jutsu.
00:43Mental training specially designed to boost brain power and focus.
00:48My trainees, or braineese, have been following a basic program of training in the comfort of their own home.
00:55A brain-boosting routine of exercise, sleep, and enough fruit and veg to stock a greengrocer's.
01:03I've done a lot of training, so I know roughly what I'm going to do and what the challenges are going to be.
01:08I did the training and I feel much more confident and I hopefully will get through to the final round.
01:13But I'm really confident about this and that's what you need to get the black belt, so I might as well just have it now.
01:20Now my braineese must put their training into practice by testing a part of the brain we use every day.
01:27Level one.
01:28Level one.
01:30Take a look at this tin of Brain Jutsu beans.
01:33Now, try to find it amongst all the other tins.
01:39Spotted, eh?
01:40Congratulations.
01:40You've just used your occipital lobes.
01:44This area, the same part of our brain, allows us to recognise and separate images from each other.
01:51The seven braineese who use their occipital lobes the best will be allowed to enter my brain jutsu dojo, where their training will continue.
01:59The one who fails will be left outside.
02:02Oh!
02:03Feel the burn.
02:05Enter the dojo!
02:07Our braineese must answer four questions by studying the different shapes on the board in front of them.
02:14Get the questions right and they'll be left with a four-digit code, which they must then use to unlock a piece of brain and secure their place in the dojo.
02:21But with only seven pieces of brain and eight braineese, one of either Peter, Jesse, Kyle, Zena, Lucy, Luke, Bethany or Ria will be left outside and eliminated.
02:35A bang of the gong reveals the four questions.
02:42How many green squares are there?
02:50How many green circles are there?
02:56How many pink shapes are there?
02:58The answer our braineese are looking for is two, three, four, four.
03:18Peter's first off his stool, quickly followed by Kyle and a bunch of the other braineese.
03:23In fact, the only braineese not to have got up yet is Luke, but if he feels the pressure, he's not showing it because he looks as cool as a sea cucumber.
03:36And it's Peter who's first to unlock a piece of brain and claim a place in the dojo.
03:42Kyle and Zena, though, have had to return to the noodle bar for a second helping.
03:46Next to join Peter is Lucy, quickly followed by Luke, proving that patience really does pay off.
03:56Don't forget, the code I have braineese are searching for is two, three, four, four.
04:01Because there are two green squares, three green circles, four pink shapes and four blue circles.
04:08With three more braineese unlocking their piece of brain, it's now a straight fight between Kyle and Bethany for that last place in the dojo.
04:19Come on, braineese, work those occipital lobes.
04:24Kyle thinks he's now got the code, but will he be right this time, I wonder?
04:31Affirmative, Kyle's lock springs open, which means he's in and Bethany's out.
04:38While seven have proven themselves worthy of entering the dojo and continuing their brain training, for Bethany, it's the end of the road.
04:51I feel quite sad, but I tried my best and I couldn't do any more.
04:57When I'm under pressure, I feel like I just get a bit confused and I've got mixed up.
05:01So, with six levels to go, it's Peter, Lucy, Luke, Xena, Jesse, Ria and Kyle, who received their yellow brain belts.
05:12I'm so relieved. I got really scared when I saw it was two people there for me and Bethany.
05:20Everyone was up and I saw people pulling the chains off and I was like, no, I can't be out, I can't be out, please.
05:26I really want that black belt because, come on, I've got to beat all this lot, come on.
05:32My yellow belt loves me because I love it.
05:35In this next level of training, things are going to get really hard.
05:47We do things every day without even thinking, like eating with a knife and fork.
05:55Now, try swapping them over and see how you get on.
05:59I prefer chopsticks, mate.
06:02If you manage to do that, you're using part of your brain that deals with problem solving, the frontal lobes.
06:09And that's what level two is all about.
06:12Taking something you normally do without thinking and doing it differently.
06:17Work it!
06:18To prepare them for using their frontal lobes in the next challenge, my brainees are going to need some training.
06:24Room of mental nourishment.
06:26This is the room of mental nourishment, where our young hopefuls will train their brains between every task.
06:34The more seriously they take their training, the better prepared they'll be for the challenges that lie ahead.
06:40And in level two, that challenge is all about getting their brains to think in a different way.
06:46Take it in turns to call out the action on your cards.
06:49Everyone has to do the opposite.
06:50This exercise works our brainees' frontal lobes by making them think in a new way about something they'd normally do without thinking.
07:00I'll start.
07:01Both arms down.
07:04Touch mouth with right hand.
07:09Left knee up.
07:13Look sad.
07:14Our brainees are showing great focus, but then Ria trips up.
07:20Keep tongue in mouth.
07:26Oh, my goodness.
07:28Oh, heck, time for a tip.
07:30Tip.
07:31Don't rush.
07:32Pause for two seconds to think before you react.
07:34Sit down.
07:36Ace advice.
07:37Because stopping to think before rushing in really can improve your focus and help you to perform better.
07:44Wakey, wakey, Kyle.
07:49Let's shut our left eye.
07:54I don't think I'm going to lose the next round.
07:57Okay.
07:57Be quiet.
07:58Because I made a mistake the last one.
08:01I rushed it and didn't think about it.
08:04And I think, um, you are going out.
08:10Are you sure about it?
08:11I think it's you, actually.
08:12Okay.
08:14So, will confident Kyle get one over his new rival, Kool and Luke?
08:20And will Ria remember her training when their pressure's on?
08:23Time to find out as our seven now put their frontal lobe training to the test.
08:31Guardian of the dojo and task adjudicator the Sheehan will now demonstrate the level two challenge.
08:38Confusing colour challenge.
08:42Braini's will take turn to stand in middle of confusing colour challenge map.
08:46Sheehan then flip through 15 cards.
08:49On each card is name of colour.
08:51Ignoring actual word and focusing only on colour that word is written in.
08:57Braini's must then jump with both feet onto matching circle.
09:01So, if see this, must jump on blue.
09:05Braini will need to be on ball because Sheehan will be turning over cards at fair old lick.
09:11Player with least number of correct colour matches will be eliminated.
09:15My braini tip for this task is to focus the mind on just one letter and not the whole word.
09:23What's important here is not the word, but the colour that it's written in.
09:32Luke and Cam, our level one winner Peter, takes to the mat.
09:36And while the pace is fast, it's not putting this braini off, as Peter's frontal lobes process those colours.
09:50So that's yellow.
09:52That's orange.
09:55And that's pink.
09:56The gong sounds and that looks like a terrific score, but Peter will have to wait just a bit longer for his final tally.
10:08Next up is Lucy, and like Peter before her, her training looks to have paid off.
10:12Pink.
10:17Red.
10:20And pink again.
10:22It's another impressive display of focus, and yes, Lucy's got every right to look pleased.
10:29But not all her braini's are finding the task quite so straightforward.
10:35With two mistakes right from the gong, Kool and Luke's getting his brain in a right old twist.
10:42While Jesse's brains is as confused as a tourist in Tokyo.
10:58One by one, our braini's take their turn on the mat, furiously working those frontal lobes to help them separate the words from the colours.
11:06While Rapid Rear has no problem with keeping up with the Sheehan.
11:17Confident Kyle's frontal lobes are struggling with the pace.
11:26As the gong sounds for the last time, out of our seven braini's done.
11:30Peter scored a brain-tastic 15 out of 15 colour matches, as did Lucy and Xena.
11:42Just behind them was Rhea, who scored an impressive 14 matches, followed by Kyle on 12.
11:49Leaving just one of either Luke or Jesse to claim that last place in the next level.
11:54And with Luke scoring 10 matches to Jesse's nine, it's Kool and Luke, who scrapes through.
12:01Leaving Jesse to hand over her brain belt and leave the dojo.
12:04The walk of eternal regret.
12:17I don't think I did very well, or could have done better.
12:20I could have paid more attention to the colours, or like, I could have done it faster.
12:25At least I got to go into the dojo, which is good.
12:27So, with five levels to go, it's Peter, Lucy, Luke, Xena, Rhea and Kyle, who received their orange brain belt.
12:41I'm just happy that I actually even got through.
12:44I have to win it by it from now, because that was lucky and I've got to up my game a bit.
12:51Brain T2!
12:53Brainy, not so brainy.
12:59Who's the clever clogs and whose brain needs a lot more training?
13:03Money, dosh, wonga, moolah makes the world go round.
13:06Who's that love?
13:06Anyway, see this geezer with a beard, Mr Richard Branson.
13:10He set up his first business at the tender age of 16 and has since cashed in an estimated 4 billion pounds,
13:16which he uses to fund some unusual hobbies, like breaking world records in our air balloons
13:20and building rockets to send people into space.
13:23Ker-ching!
13:24Right, off to the USA now, and someone who's not quite so clever with the cash.
13:28A bloke in his mid-thirties walks into a shop, buys some grub and pays the cashier.
13:32Sounds pretty run-of-the-mill, except for one thing.
13:35He only goes and tries to pay with a million-dollar note.
13:38What a wonga, wally.
13:40Brainy, Richard Branson.
13:42Not so brainy, million-dollar note nitwit.
13:44Brainy, Jitsu.
13:51Competition in Brainy, Jitsu, dojo, hotting off.
13:54Only six brainy remain to battle it out under watchful eye of Shihan.
13:59Peter, winner of first two levels.
14:02Confident Kyle.
14:03My yellow belt loves me because I love it.
14:08Cool hand look.
14:10Rapid rear.
14:11I feel much more confident, and I hopefully will get through to the final round.
14:15Lucy, runner up in both levels.
14:18And Xena.
14:19I really want that black belt.
14:21Come on, I've got to beat all this lot.
14:24Challenge is about to get even tougher.
14:26Only two brainy will make final test.
14:28Table of supreme forecast.
14:30Where must move goal with power of mind.
14:33A chance to win.
14:34Brainy, Jitsu, black, green belt.
14:37It's time for...
14:40Level three.
14:41Winner.
14:42Now, we all like to chat, but did you know that using words to communicate is one of the main reasons why our brains have grown so incredibly powerful?
14:53And that having a conversation exercises both halves of the brain.
14:58Allow me to explain.
15:00Think of it like a policeman guiding traffic.
15:04While the drivers are focused on their own individual journeys, the policeman, he has to control all the cars and where they're going.
15:12It's the same with the brain.
15:14There's the left half, which deals with the details, and there's the right half, which looks at the overall picture.
15:19This next level of training strengthens my brainy's focus by working one half of their brain under pressure.
15:27Hey, pump it up!
15:30Room of mental nourishment.
15:33Yay!
15:35It's our brainy's second visit to the room of mental nourishment, where once again they'll train in preparation for the next challenge.
15:42Which, remember, is all about using the two halves of the brain to communicate.
15:46Each pin, a body part, onto the sumo wrestler.
15:52Another brainy must direct the blindfolded brainy only using three instructions.
16:01Got that, brainy's.
16:02Three instructions.
16:04Clutching a sumo mouth, Xena is first to volunteer.
16:08But her partner, confident Kyle, has been about as useful as a chocolate chopstick.
16:12Up, up, to the left, this is left.
16:21You've had three instructions.
16:24Oh dear, not even close.
16:30With Kool and Luke doing the directing, it's now Peter's turn to flex the left side of his brain.
16:35I'll move it to the right until I say stop.
16:38Stop.
16:39Stick it.
16:40That's quite good.
16:45No, that's quite bad.
16:46Time for a training tip.
16:50Develop a system of measurements, i.e. how many hand widths are pulled down.
16:56Armed with this new technique, it's rapid Rhea's turn to guide, with Luke following her instructions.
17:01Okay, bend down.
17:04It's four hand widths up.
17:06What's that?
17:07Three.
17:07One.
17:08And with just that extra bit of information from his partner, Luke's body part homes in on its target more directly than a racing pigeon in a bullet train.
17:17Yeah.
17:18Did I?
17:18Yeah, look.
17:20I'm the best!
17:20Okay, stop staring at me.
17:22Shut up.
17:22Putting yourself in someone else's shoes and giving them all the information that they might need is the key to good communication.
17:29Listen, yeah.
17:30My, my leg, can you see that, was the best.
17:34Look at the placement on that.
17:36He was blindfolded, so he didn't see anything at all.
17:39My brilliance was nothing to do with my instructor.
17:42She was terrible.
17:43I was the one who directed him and told him what to, where to put the leg.
17:47But I will give that much credit to her, that much.
17:53But nobody wants to listen to your nonsense.
17:55No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
17:56The reason why these two did well, because I read the tip before they did it, so it was mostly me.
18:04So, will Kool and Luke's brilliance shine through in the next task?
18:08Will Rapid Ria race to her first level win?
18:12Or will Perfect Peter make it a perfect 3 out of 3?
18:17It's time to find out, as our six now put their communication training to the test.
18:25Hands through number two.
18:28This is test of communication skills.
18:31So, six brainy must first divide into teams of two by drawing chopsticks.
18:38Quickly as possible, teams must punch six bucket containing number that go to make some.
18:45Pairs must decide who is guider, who is puncher.
18:49Puncher is blindfold and relying on guider to help find bucket.
18:53When all six bucket punched, brainy stop clock by shouting, brain jitsu.
19:00Quicker they punch bucket, more time they have to pick up number and make some.
19:06When brainy happy with answer, hit the gong.
19:09First two team to work out correct answer, get green belt and advance to next level.
19:15One brainy from losing team will be eliminated.
19:18The key to success here is for the guider to use the right side of their brain
19:23to follow their teammates' progress and give them clear instructions.
19:28For their partner, it's vital they use the left side of their brain
19:32to focus on these instructions and nothing else.
19:35First to put their communication training to the test are Xena and Rapid Ria.
19:43Go, go, bit, right, right.
19:45In training, Ria was the best at guiding, but now she's punching.
19:49So, have the girls made a tactical error?
19:52Oops, go, bit, um...
19:53Certainly Xena's not exactly helping her partner.
19:56Go, bit, back. More back.
20:00A bit could mean anything.
20:02Oops, go, bit, um, right.
20:04And Xena's lack of detail is costing the girls valuable time.
20:10OK, now go forward.
20:14Punch.
20:15Yes, go forward.
20:18Punch.
20:20Brain jitsu.
20:21At last they stopped the clock.
20:23But is one minute fifty seconds quick enough to have bought them that extra time to make their sum?
20:30Take three little steps forward.
20:32Next up is Lucy and Perfect Peter.
20:34And go to the right a bit.
20:36The taller of the two, Peter's decided to do the punching.
20:39Forwards.
20:40But will the left side of his brain be up to the task?
20:44Punch.
20:45It sounds as though Lucy's remembered her training.
20:48And punch.
20:49But then the two suffer a communication breakdown.
20:52Punch.
20:54To the right.
20:55Punch.
20:55Punch.
20:59Punch.
21:01Brain jitsu.
21:01The pair stopped the clock in one minute twenty-eight seconds.
21:05That's quicker than the blue team, but the green team are still to punch.
21:10Last up are confident Kyle and Kool and Luke.
21:13Both strong individuals.
21:15Can the two work together as a team?
21:18I should cook, huh?
21:20Stop punching.
21:21With Kyle working the right side of his brain to great effect and Kool and Luke punching as cleanly as a Tokyo toilet, the two are racing along.
21:30Don't punch.
21:31Yes, forward.
21:34Right.
21:35To the right.
21:37Punch.
21:38Brain jitsu.
21:39Stopping the clock in a punch-tastic one minute six seconds, it's a great show of communication from the boys.
21:45Enough to make sure it's them who set off first to find their numbers.
21:50OK.
21:51Plus.
21:51Six.
21:53Six.
21:53Plus.
21:54Here's what our brainy's are looking for.
21:56See if you can work out the sum.
21:57Remember, the first two teams to work it out will go through to the next level.
22:04As fast as you can say tasty tempura, Lucy and Peter bang their gong.
22:10Just ahead of Xena and rapid rear.
22:14But confident Kyle and Kool and Luke are having a bit of a domestic over the digits.
22:19Now that equals 21 still.
22:21This is actually messed up.
22:22Oh dear.
22:24No, sorry.
22:25Take away five.
22:26Yeah, it was 24.
22:27Are you sure?
22:28But that's not an...
22:28No, I'm sure.
22:29At last they bang their gong.
22:31It's so simple.
22:33So, do the numbers add up?
22:3720 plus 9 minus 5 equals 24.
22:40That's a thumbs up for the boys.
22:43And a thumbs up for Lucy and Peter.
22:46But what's this?
22:4820 minus 9 plus 5 equals 24?
22:51Ria and Xena's numbers definitely don't add up.
22:54And so, although Kyle and Luke were last to finish, they survive.
22:58And it's Xena and Rapid Rear who will be battling it out to avoid elimination in the...
23:04Stay off!
23:08With just one green belt up for grabs, both brainies must use their powers of focus to fight the urge to blink.
23:15The first to falter will be eliminated.
23:17As wide-eyed as a couple of manga cartoon kids, our brainies are refusing to back down.
23:29But at last it's Ria who goes from think to blink.
23:33While Xena survives to fight another day, for Rapid Rear, it's time to hand over her orange brain belt and leave the dojo.
23:46Walk of eternal regret.
23:50If I could do that task again, I would change positions with Xena because if I could guide her, we'd maybe gone a bit quicker.
23:57I think that Luke or Lucy are going to win the brain jitsu black belt because they're very confident.
24:06So, with four levels to go, it's Peter, Lucy, Luke, Xena and Kyle who line up for their green belts.
24:14I just had a staring condition and now my eyes are watering and I'm so glad I got through.
24:21I didn't really concentrate on the training because I know I'm very good at communicating with others anyway.
24:28Next, I have to win again so I can get the blue belt.
24:35Brain jitsu!
24:39Level four.
24:41Blue belt!
24:41This fourth level requires our brainies to master a primitive part of the brain called the amygdala.
24:49The area that responds to threat.
24:52Ha ha!
24:53Oh, phew!
24:56Remember the last time you felt afraid or panicky?
24:58Perhaps you're on a ghost train at a fairground.
25:01Well, that feeling was triggered by the old amygdala.
25:05Stress can make you lose focus.
25:08Fact.
25:09Which is why my brainies must train to keep their emotions under control.
25:15Room of mental nourishment.
25:17We're back in the room of mental nourishment and it's time for our five remaining green belt holders to overcome their fear and stay focused.
25:30Form a circle.
25:31Pass a disgusting drink around the circle, only passing it on when you have said a different word relating to the last word someone says.
25:40After one minute, the brainie holding the drink has to drink it.
25:46Urgh.
25:47You're starting.
25:48Yeah.
25:49Sounds simple enough until you realise that the drink in question is full of salty seaweed.
25:57Doing their best to ignore the signals coming from their amygdalas, our brave brainies get started.
26:02And pretty soon, the room of mental nourishment is sounding like a language school.
26:08Adios.
26:10Whatever.
26:11Cool blood.
26:12Bravo.
26:15Salutations.
26:16Peace out.
26:17Zina's had a complete mental block.
26:22Just the thought of the drink of stink is stopping her from thinking of another word.
26:26Nice meeting you.
26:28The minute's up and it's cool and Luke who's left holding the slimy slot.
26:33Okay.
26:34Drink it.
26:35Drink it.
26:36Drink it.
26:37Drink it.
26:37Okay, stop.
26:37Okay.
26:38It's a water.
26:38Oh, no, no, no.
26:48Oh, that's disgusting.
26:49Time for a training tip.
26:54Concentrate.
26:54Try to block out the time and fear of the drink to avoid the panicking.
26:59Top tip.
27:00Because the calmer you are, the better you'll perform.
27:03Luke, however, seems anything but calm.
27:05I'll say straight to pee.
27:06I'm not doing it now.
27:07No, that's unfair.
27:08No, I'm going to drink some.
27:10Oh, so it's just a school.
27:11Yellow.
27:12Unable to stomach any more of that seaweed, Luke decides to sit out the rest of his training.
27:17White.
27:18Oh, yeah.
27:19It actually sits on.
27:20Oh, my God.
27:22But Lucy can't resist a quick sniff.
27:24Oh, my days.
27:25That smells like quality of oil.
27:26I'm seriously going to be serious.
27:28You know what?
27:29I've actually tasted something like this before.
27:31I'm not joking, you know.
27:33No, no, no.
27:35I'm not drinking it.
27:36No.
27:37This time, it's Xena who must down the drink of stink.
27:40Five, four, three, two, one.
27:45Drink a little.
27:52You're out of order.
27:55Oh, I can't wait, man.
27:58Well, because I knew I was going to drink something really nasty, I panicked a bit.
28:08It's like, oh.
28:09I drank more because, like, I'm kind of a dare to myself to overcome my fear of yuck stuff.
28:19Will Brave Xena's bold approach pay off?
28:23Will Kyle find his confidence once again?
28:25And will Kool and Luke regret swapping his train in for Sweeties?
28:32It's time to find out, as our five are challenged to overcome their fears once again.
28:39Creepy Crawly word grab.
28:41This level, real test of mind over matter for brainies, and will push them to really overcome their fear.
28:48Underneath the creepy crawlies lie an assortment of letters worth different points.
28:53Brainies have just one minute to plunge hands into tank and pick out up to seven letters each.
28:58They then have a further minute to make higher scoring what they can.
29:05To do well, my brainies must block out the signals coming from their amygdala and ignore the creepy crawlies.
29:12The quicker they combat their fear, the more time they'll have to pick out the high scoring letters.
29:21Let's see if our brainies have remembered their training.
29:26Oh, wow.
29:27Oh, I'm joking.
29:29The answer appears to be no, as out-and-out panic descends on the door, Jo.
29:33I don't like this.
29:34Oh, no, I really don't.
29:36Underneath these crickets are an extra five golden letters.
29:39If our brainies manage to use one in their word, they'll double their score.
29:43Oh, there's no letters.
29:44You have to dig your hand in it.
29:46Oh.
29:48I'm going to do it, everyone.
29:52There's the gong, and our brainies force themselves to stick their hands in.
29:57After the early fuss, most appear to be getting on with it, ignoring the signals coming from their amygdalas to get the job done.
30:07That's mine.
30:07That's mine.
30:08Please don't have it.
30:09But as in training, Lucy is struggling to block out her fear.
30:13So far, she's only picked out two letters.
30:15Unless she forces herself to find more, she'll be struggling.
30:19What the heck, man?
30:20You guys are looking.
30:21I just...
30:22The minute's up.
30:25Our brainies now have a further minute to make the highest scoring word they can from their letters.
30:31I've lost.
30:32Can I make a word?
30:34I've lost.
30:35Could I make a longer word?
30:36Lost?
30:36No, not necessarily.
30:38Peter might have seven letters, but they're all vowels.
30:40See if you can make a word from the anagram on the screen now.
30:52There's the final gong.
30:54Hovo brainies done.
30:58No word.
30:59With his board a consonant-free zone, that's a big fat zero for perfect Peter.
31:05So?
31:06That's two points for Lucy.
31:09B.
31:10Four for Kulan Luke.
31:13Oak.
31:14Seven for brave Xena.
31:17Ox.
31:19And a winning nine points for confident Kyle.
31:25And so, with no points to his name, it's perfect Peter who must leave the dojo.
31:30Walk of eternal regret.
31:39I'm feeling quite bad, actually.
31:42Because I did feel that I was a strong contender for the black belt.
31:46Even though I sort of got the most letters, I just didn't pick the right ones.
31:51They were all vowels.
31:52With three levels to go, those who used their craniums to conquer the crickets are duly
31:59rewarded with their blue belts.
32:03I was really, really scared.
32:04I was like, am I going to do this?
32:05I'm going to lose.
32:06I may not just even put my hands near them.
32:09And it was disgusting.
32:11Lots of thoughts were running through my head.
32:13When I saw Xena drink the drink in the training, I just thought, it just encouraged me to overcome
32:18my fears and mucking and just get on with it.
32:23Brain T2.
32:27Brainy, not so brainy.
32:30Who's the clever clogs and whose brain needs a lot more training?
32:34First up, astronauts.
32:36This exclusive group is made up of some of the brightest bods on Earth.
32:40In 1969, astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon uttering the immortal words,
32:45one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.
32:49I wonder if that was off the top of his head.
32:50Here's another group.
32:51Now, not McFly.
32:53Oi, get your hair cut.
32:55This lot.
32:56Now, they may not believe the moon is made of cheese, but they do believe in rolling down
33:00a steep slug to win some.
33:02E-dem, that's gout of hurt.
33:04Brainy astronauts.
33:06Not so brainy.
33:07Cheese rolling chumps.
33:11Brain T2.
33:12Tension in Brain Jitsu Dojo mounting.
33:16Just four young hopeful remain to compete under watchful eye of Shihan.
33:22Confident Kyle, winner of last level.
33:24Lady Luck is with me today.
33:26Brave Xena.
33:27I really want that black belt because, come on, I've got to beat all this law.
33:31Cool hand Luke.
33:33I'm through.
33:34So that means I'm winning it.
33:35And Lucy.
33:36I'm just going to go for it and do my best.
33:39Only two brainy will make final showdown.
33:41Table of Supreme Forecast.
33:43Where must move ball with power of mind.
33:47Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt is within their grasp.
33:50Is it time for...
33:52Level 5.
33:53Brain Belt.
33:54If you're learning how to morris dance, then you might be interested to know that your
34:00new hobby is doing wonders for your old grey matter.
34:04Exercising both the thinking part of the brain, the cerebrum, and the doing part, the cerebellum.
34:11You see, doing new things increases the flow of blood into your head, which keeps your brain
34:17cells topped up with the oxygen they need to perform at their best.
34:21So, in Level 5, my brainees are going to be challenged to learn new skills.
34:26Now, you can speed up how quickly the brain takes in new stuff.
34:31And this is what our brainees are going to train for now.
34:35Room of Mental Nourishment.
34:40It's our brainees' fourth visit to the Room of Mental Nourishment, where they'll be training
34:45their brains in how to learn new skills.
34:47Flick the bean bag from the top of your head to the back of your neck.
34:54Well, that's kind of easy because I play football, so...
34:57Easy, is it, Luke?
35:05Certainly, Lucy doesn't think so.
35:07If there's anything to do with the challenge, I'm going to go out.
35:10In fact, most of her brainees are finding their new skill harder to crack than a Japanese
35:15crossword.
35:15I'm really bad at balancing.
35:18I'll do it, I'll do it, I'll do it.
35:22Oh, I'm not saying that.
35:24Well done, Luke.
35:24Time for a training tip.
35:26I'm lost and I'll watch you.
35:27Go on, mate.
35:29Be confident in yourself.
35:32Look in the mirror and tell yourself you can do it.
35:35I can do it.
35:37No, I can't do it.
35:37Yes, you can, Zina.
35:39Mirror, mirror in my hand.
35:41Who's the best of the clan?
35:43It might seem weird telling yourself...
35:45...that you're wonderful.
35:46But self-confidence really can help the brain to master new skills.
35:51Where the brain's concerned, there's no such wear as can't.
35:56But just as our brainees are beginning to feel the benefit of their training,
35:59things start to fall apart.
36:01Why has it got a crack in it now?
36:03Oh, dear.
36:08I'm sitting down now, I'm tired.
36:14I'm not surprised, but it's not mental fatigue.
36:17Oh, that training session wasn't so good, wasn't it?
36:22If it says you need to, like, practice, we obviously need to practice.
36:27So, will our brainees come to regret not taking their training more seriously?
36:32Only time will tell, as our four are now put to the test.
36:36To win red belt, brainees must use confidence training to help learn new skills.
36:48Racing against clock, they must steer car around obstacle course.
36:52But this brainees is too, so controls in reverse.
36:57To go right, must steer left.
36:59And to go forward, must steer backward.
37:01With time penalty lurking along course, brainees will need to remember training,
37:06stay positive, and get hung of tricky controls as quickly as possible.
37:12The tip for my brainees in this next task is to
37:15remain calm and think positive thoughts.
37:20Giving in to frustration will only lessen their focus and slow them up.
37:24So, will our brainees remember their training and stay positive,
37:28or will they let the pressure get to them?
37:31First to tackle this new task is Lucy, who gets off to a shaky start.
37:4230 seconds after the gong, and she's still at the beginning.
37:49But then she remembers her training.
37:51That's a five-second penalty, though, for knocking over the blocks.
38:07Easy does it through the slalom.
38:13Now for the goal.
38:14If her brainees can knock the ball into the net, they'll get ten seconds knocked off their time.
38:21She shoots.
38:22She misses.
38:23Still, it's a good effort.
38:24How good?
38:25We'll have to wait and see.
38:29Next to get behind the wheel is Kool-Hand Luke.
38:32It's a great start.
38:34Luke's showing that he's not just got Kool-Hands, but a Kool-Head.
38:37But, oh dear, that's five seconds to add.
38:47Oh, no, and five more.
38:51Looks as though you could have used that training after all, Luke.
38:54And instead of staying positive, as his training suggested,
38:57Luke is letting his frustration get the better of him.
39:00His focus in tatters, Luke finally makes it through the hoops.
39:11A ten-second bonus here for getting the ball in the net would certainly help matters.
39:16But it's not to be.
39:18That's embarrassing.
39:22It's now Zena's turn.
39:25While good with the speedy bit, it's the steery part that Zena's having trouble with.
39:30But then Zena begins to find her groove.
39:40Safely past the blocks.
39:45No problems either with the hoops.
39:51And despite missing the goal bonus, it's a great effort.
39:57Last up is confident Kyle.
39:59Will he also regret his lack of training?
40:05Well, it's nice and neat so far, but can confident Kyle hold it together?
40:15Despite a penalty for bashing the blocks, it's a great showing from the young brainee.
40:19His cerebrum and cerebellum working well together.
40:22No time deduction for a goal, but it's a crack in time.
40:30So, which of her brainees have steered their way to the next level?
40:34With one penalty to add to her time of 3 minutes 58, Lucy finishes in 4 minutes 3 seconds.
40:43Racking up two penalties, Kool and Luke got round in a not-so-cool 6 minutes 17 seconds.
40:51With no penalties, brave Zena finished in 2 minutes 49.
40:55While confident Kyle, with one penalty to his name, raced round in a rapid 1 minute 58 seconds.
41:04Which means it's the end of the speedy, tricky, steery road for Kool and Luke, who must now leave the dojo.
41:11The walk of eternal regret.
41:19As soon as I touched the car and saw how agile it was, I knew I wasn't going to do very well.
41:23I got very angry, to be honest, so I gave up.
41:29So, with two levels to go, that leaves Lucy, Zena and Kyle to stand proud in red.
41:35Oh yeah, go Kyle, I'm the best, I got the shortest time, Luke is out of fear.
41:41I was especially confident in this game because at home I just turn my mouse upside down
41:45and sort of mess around with it on the computer and see if I can get it working.
41:49I really want to win this because I'm quite competitive.
41:52I'm going to get that black belt no matter what.
41:59Rain Tito!
42:02Rumble 6R!
42:04Roll bolt!
42:05It's this level which will decide which two of my remaining braineys will go on to battle it out for the black belt.
42:15Imagine you're about to kick a conversion in an important rugby match.
42:20As well as remembering your technique, there might be a strong wind blowing.
42:24Plus, there's a big crowd watching you.
42:26It's remembering stuff like this under pressure that level 6 is all about.
42:31It centres around three areas of the brain.
42:34The seeing part, the occipital lobes, the memory part, the temporal lobes and the movement part, the cerebellum.
42:43To the max.
42:45Room of mental nourishment.
42:48Our three surviving braineys are back in the room of mental nourishment.
42:55This time, we're a spot of memory training.
42:57Memorise the train map.
43:01This gives me a very good idea about our next task.
43:04I think it's a memory one.
43:05Yeah, me too.
43:06Hey, there's no kidding Kyle, is there?
43:08I know, listen, listen.
43:09We'll have a line each and then it'll be much easier to memorise.
43:12There are three lines.
43:13There are three lines.
43:14Sounds like a smart plan.
43:15Wait, okay.
43:16Glasgow, Belfast, Stafford, um, Middlesbrough, something beginning with a bee and something
43:32else beginning with a bee and I'll go.
43:35Time for a tip.
43:36Split the tasks, memorise a train line each.
43:41Wow, we're so smart.
43:42We've already done that.
43:43Who done that?
43:44The next time you're out shopping with your family, try dividing up your list and see if
43:48between you, you can remember everything on it.
43:51Edinburgh, Carlisle, Manchester, Warwick, um...
43:57Not that it's made too much difference to Kyle, that has to be said.
44:01What?
44:02Worcester.
44:03Worcester.
44:04Based on this training session, I might get expelled from the dojo, but I'm not 100%
44:13sure if it's me.
44:14I think it'll be Zena.
44:16Thank you, Kyle.
44:17Kyle.
44:18Oh!
44:19See, I can't remember your name.
44:21So, Lucy second-guessed the training tip, but will she be quite so on the ball back in
44:25the dojo?
44:26And is confident Kyle on his way out as he himself predicts?
44:32Only time will tell as our final three put their memory train into the test for one of
44:37two brown brain belts and a place on the table of supreme focus.
44:41Super memory dizzy dash.
44:48Reni is spin around on dizzy wheel total of ten times while using all power of focus to
44:55memorize five images in front of them.
44:58Then, must race against clock to cross balancing beam and collect five images they have not seen
45:05from the ten hanging above them.
45:09Then, must arrange in alphabetical order.
45:13When brainy happy with selection, hit the gong to stop clock.
45:19My tip for the brainy's is to keep focused on the main objective and use their training
45:25to link the five images together.
45:28So, as our final three brave the dizzy wheel, will their memory training help them to remember
45:34the images and ignore the effects of being spun round like worms on a waltzer?
45:39It's time to spin.
45:54Looking a little dazed, Lucy unstraps herself from the dizzy wheel.
45:57Here are the images she saw on the wheel.
46:00Which means that this is what she's now looking for.
46:03Don't forget our brainy's must fight their dizziness and pick out the five images they
46:08didn't see on the wheel, arranging them in alphabetical order.
46:12For everyone they get wrong, it's a five second penalty.
46:15The brainy with the slowest time will be eliminated from the dojo.
46:19Here are those images again.
46:21No need to look worried, Lucy, because that looks like full marks.
46:30But you'll have to wait a bit to discover your time.
46:35Next to go is brave Zena.
46:40But oh no, she's immediately chosen one of the images she did see on the wheel,
46:45earning her an automatic five second penalty.
46:48Zena also appears to have forgotten that speed is of the essence.
46:58Laying out her pictures as if she's going to put them on the wall.
47:09A bit more thinking time.
47:11And Zena finally bangs her gong.
47:28Last up is confident Kyle.
47:31And it looks like his training's paid off after all,
47:38as he plucks out five images in no time.
47:45And what's more, Kyle is determined not to slip up over the right order,
47:49running through that alphabet in his mind.
47:52Kyle bangs his gong, but has he been fast enough to secure his place in the final showdown?
48:08Let's find out.
48:09With no penalties, laid back Lucy finished in an easy one minute 15 seconds.
48:16With one five second penalty for that wrong image, brave Zena finished in one minute 28 seconds.
48:24While confident Kyle picked up no penalties, giving him a time of one minute 12 seconds.
48:31Which means that it's brave Zena who must relinquish her brain belt and leave the dojo.
48:38Walk of eternal regret.
48:43It slowed down a lot because I was so dizzy.
48:48It's quite tough. I'm not so good in memory.
48:51So with one level to go, that leaves just laid back Lucy and confident Kyle
48:56to don their brown brain belt and prepare for the final showdown.
49:00I'm still in shock.
49:01I can't actually believe that I got through because I thought,
49:03oh this is it, I'm out, I'm out, I'm out.
49:05Woohoo, go Kyle, go Kyle.
49:08That black belt would look very good to me.
49:14Brain T2!
49:15Eight young hopeful arrived at Brain Training Dojo to fight for Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt.
49:24As training got tougher, Brain E fell by wayside. Some lack focus.
49:30Others crack under pressure.
49:33Now just two remain.
49:35Laid back Lucy and confident Kyle, winner of last three level.
49:40But who will use Brain Training to the max to win last challenge?
49:47Level seven.
49:48Black Belt!
49:50So, this is it.
49:53Between my two remaining Brain E's and the Black Belt stands Brain Jitsu's ultimate challenge.
50:00A mental duel that is head to head in every sense.
50:04The battlefield? A table.
50:06But not just any table.
50:08For this, my friends, is the table of supreme focus.
50:12Where our two Brain E's will attempt to move a ball across the table using only the power of their mind.
50:20By getting this far, they've already demonstrated mental control under many different types of pressure.
50:26But now, they must learn to focus their minds by entering a state of total calm.
50:32To prepare them, my two finalists will need to get into the zone.
50:36Room of Mental Nourishment.
50:40In this, their sixth and final visit to the Room of Mental Nourishment, our last two Brain E's are about to train in how to stay focused, no matter what's happening around them.
50:51Mentally prepare yourself for the final task. Don't let the sounds put you off.
50:56As the room becomes louder than a busy karaoke bar, both Brain E's look rather bewildered.
51:03I was actually really starving.
51:08That's the whole point, Lucy. The skill lies in not letting it affect your focus.
51:14Oh, heck. Time for a training tip.
51:17Breathe in slowly through your nose. Feel the passage of the air. Count to five. Breathe out slowly through your mouth. Counting to five. Repeat.
51:28While Kyle tries to use the tip, Lucy, now has a fit of the giggles.
51:43Before long, neither can control themselves.
51:46Oh, dear, oh, dear. Hardly ideal preparation for the toughest test yet.
51:53If it's going to be something like we just did, I don't think I'm going to do very well.
51:57I'm going to win it. Forget about her. Me.
52:01So, can confident Kyle, winner of the last three levels, make it four in a row and take the black belt?
52:09And can laid-back Lucy get over her giggles to rediscover her focus in time for her biggest challenge yet?
52:16Let's find out.
52:19Table of supreme focus.
52:22Rules are simple. Each brainy must push ball to the opponent's end of table using only power of mind.
52:32Sensors in brainy's headbands measure brainwaves. This is converted into electrical signal which moves ball.
52:39More focused mind, stronger signal, and faster ball will travel.
52:44See how brainy's are doing on this readout.
52:47Two lines represent each player's brainwaves. Lower the line, more concentrated their mind.
52:57To make sure this is the test of all tests, our brainy's must win the best of three rounds.
53:06So, this is the big one. Our two finalists must use all their brain training to enter their zone of absolute focus.
53:13This is the reason they came to the dojo. This is the moment they've been training for.
53:21Kyle is first to get the ball rolling. His low black line, a clear sign that his mind is the more focused of the two.
53:36But laid back Lucy keeps her cool and begins to push Kyle back.
53:45But her resistance doesn't last as Kyle digs deep to rediscover his focus.
53:50It's 1-0 to Kyle and laid back Lucy is going to have to call on all her training so far if she's not to be eliminated.
54:04Round 2
54:05Round 2
54:23You can see from the low black line on his readout that Kyle is really using his new breathing technique to maximise focus.
54:29And although Lucy is once again battling hard to push her opponent back, it's not enough.
54:41It's all over and it's Kyle who's emerged triumphant.
54:46In an epic battle of concentration and focus, his training has paid off.
54:49Confident Kyle truly has proved himself to be a master of the mind and worthy winner of the brain jitsu black belt.
54:58But glory for one brings disappointment for another.
55:02And although she fought bravely, Lucy must now leave the dojo.
55:06The sounds in training really distracted me and made me really nervous for the final task.
55:21And that's what made me do it.
55:23I'm really, really disappointed and I really, really wanted to win.
55:26But to get this far is just amazing.
55:28What a performance from confident Kyle.
55:34Winner of four out of seven levels.
55:37This impressive young brainy has swept all before him.
55:40Drawing on all his brain training to date, he turned it on when it really mattered.
55:45To grab that brain jitsu black brain belt from Lucy's grasp.
55:49I just want to say a couple of things in a very physical way.
55:52I made it. I made it. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. I'm the champion. Oh yeah.
56:00The way I moved that ball was to focus and relax.
56:04Which is a very easy task, but for my opponent it wasn't.
56:13Our journey has come to an end.
56:15Another brainy has proven themselves worthy to wear the brain jitsu black belt.
