00:00One of the training you're about to see be attempted, unless under expert supervision.
00:05Eight braineese, one challenge.
00:08To use complex mass of 100 billion cells we call Brain,
00:12for chance to win Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt.
00:15This is Brain Jitsu.
00:23Born in Lancashire, trained in Japan, with mind as sharp as samurai sword,
00:28he is Brain Master, he is the Sensei.
00:33Konnichiwa, and welcome to Brain Jitsu.
00:38Mental training specially designed to boost brain power and focus.
00:43My trainees, or braineese, have been following a basic program of training in the comfort of their own home.
00:50A brain boosting routine of exercise, sleep, and enough fruit and veg to stock a greengrocer's.
00:56I've been training my brain with computers, so I'm really ready.
01:01I hope I win. I hope I've done enough to sort of get to the end.
01:04I'm going to win the black belt because I'm the best.
01:07Now my braineese must put their training into practice,
01:10by testing a part of the brain we use every day.
01:14Level one.
01:15No, no, Walt!
01:16Take a look at all these chocolates.
01:20Mmm, yummy.
01:21But how many white rabbits are there?
01:25If you've got six, then congratulations.
01:28You've just used your occipital lobes.
01:31This area, the seeing part of our brain, allows us to recognise and separate images from each other.
01:38The seven braineese who use their occipital lobes the best
01:41will be allowed to enter my brain jitsu dojo, where their training will continue.
01:46The one who fails will be left outside.
01:49Ho!
01:50Feel the burn.
01:52Enter the dojo!
01:54Our braineese must answer four questions by studying the shapes on the board in front of them.
02:01Get the questions right and they'll be left with a four-digit code,
02:04which they must then use to unlock a piece of brain and secure their place in the dojo.
02:09But with only seven pieces of brain and eight braineese,
02:12one of either Awa, Saha, Baba, Lucy, Livu, Kirsten, Sam or Ben
02:20will be left outside and eliminated.
02:24A bang of the gong reveals the four questions.
02:31How many stars are there?
02:40How many green triangles are there?
02:50How many rectangles are there?
02:52How many rectangles are there?
02:54How many orange triangles have the number five on them?
03:02The answer our braineese are looking for is 4-2-3-3.
03:06First off her stool is Lucy, but has she got the right cord?
03:18Or has she jumped too soon?
03:21Hot on her heels are Saha, Ben and Sam.
03:24And with seven braineese now working on all seven pieces of brain,
03:30it's Awa, who's been left at the noodle bar.
03:34Quickly joined by Lucy, who did go too soon.
03:38And faster than you can say, form-filled futon,
03:40Sam and Ben unlock their piece of brain and become the first to make it into the dojo.
03:45A quick reminder, that cord over braineese are searching for is 4-2-3-3,
03:53as there are four stars, two green triangles, three rectangles and three orange triangles are the number five on them.
04:02Come on braineese, work those occipital lobes.
04:06With three more braineese now also through,
04:17that just leaves Saha, Awa and Baba to fight it out for the last two places in the dojo.
04:24Saha reckons she's now finally got that cord.
04:27Will she open her lock this time?
04:29Oh yes!
04:31And while Baba continues to scan the board,
04:33Awa's also off her stool with what she thinks is the right combination.
04:39And this time she makes no mistake.
04:43Which means that Awa's in and Baba's out.
04:50While seven have proven themselves worthy of entering the dojo
04:53and continuing their brain training,
04:55for Baba, it's the end of the road.
04:58It went wrong when I miscalculated how many rectangles there were.
05:03Part of me was really unhappy, but I've tried.
05:08So with six levels to go,
05:10it's time for Sam,
05:11Ben,
05:12Kirsten,
05:14Lucy,
05:14Livu,
05:15Saha and Awa
05:16to receive their yellow brain belts.
05:19I'm very relieved because when I went,
05:21I was like proper nervous.
05:22I was very, very scared.
05:24I was shaking.
05:25I'm quite amused to get through first.
05:26It was good,
05:27but I reckon I'm going to win.
05:29I don't think yellow's my colour.
05:30Maybe black.
05:31You know.
05:34Brain Titu.
05:37In this next level of training,
05:38things are going to get really hard.
05:41Level two.
05:43Orange belt.
05:45We do things every day without even thinking about it.
05:49Like throwing a ball.
05:50The next time you're with your mates,
05:52try throwing it with the arm you wouldn't normally use.
05:56Yeah.
05:56A lot more difficult, isn't it?
05:58If you manage to do that,
06:00you're using part of your brain that deals with problem solving,
06:03the frontal lobes.
06:04And that's what level two is all about.
06:08Taking something you normally do without thinking
06:10and doing it differently.
06:12Work it.
06:13To prepare them for using their frontal lobes in the next challenge,
06:17my brainees are going to need some training.
06:20Room of mental nourishment.
06:24This is the room of mental nourishment,
06:27where our young hopefuls will train their brains between every task.
06:31The more seriously they take their training,
06:33the better prepared they'll be for the challenges that lie ahead.
06:35And in level two,
06:37that challenge is all about getting their brains to think in a new way.
06:41Brain training.
06:42Write the name of the braineer you think will win the black belt.
06:45Write backwards using the hand you don't normally write with.
06:48By having to do something they'd normally do without even thinking,
06:52our braineers are really going to have to work their frontal lobes.
06:56Starting with who's who.
06:58It's your name.
06:59It's on the tag.
07:00Nice tactic, Sam.
07:04Make sure everyone can see that name tag
07:06and perhaps they'll vote for you.
07:08Yeah, because he's won the first round.
07:09Yeah.
07:10There's one vote.
07:12Sam's name because I think he might win
07:14since he was first last time.
07:17Yeah, that's what I thought as well
07:18because he went first in the first one.
07:20Yeah.
07:21Holy karaoke.
07:23Does anyone not think Sam's going to win the black belt?
07:25Lucy will get the black belt
07:27because she tried first,
07:29so that means she's quite quick and she's quite confident.
07:32Looks like it says yuck.
07:33I'm upside down.
07:34Ooh, ouch.
07:36Time for a training tip.
07:39Picture the world in front of you before you write it.
07:42Think about each individual letter.
07:46If you want to work your frontal lobes,
07:48try writing backwards at home like Kirsten is right now.
07:51It will help improve your all-round focus.
07:54Who got the most votes?
07:55Sam.
07:56Sam.
07:56Yeah.
07:56Yeah, I think it was Sam.
07:58I got none.
07:59And I'm yuck, apparently.
08:01Thanks for that, Sam.
08:03No, it's mess.
08:05What?
08:05Um, I am...
08:07We will.
08:07We will.
08:08We will.
08:09Well, it was like a confidence boost
08:11when I had all the votes.
08:13Well, not all the votes, but most of the votes.
08:15Cool.
08:15But it's a bit of pressure as well.
08:17So, can Super Sam cope with the pressure of being top dog?
08:21And we'll leave who's lack of votes affect his confidence.
08:24It's time to find out as our seven braineys now put their frontal lobe training to the test.
08:30Guardian of the Dojo and Task Adjudicator, the Sheehan, will now demonstrate the level two challenge.
08:37Patsy-feely boxes!
08:41Inside seven boxes is hidden item, five of which match with item on shopping list.
08:47Braineys must take in turns to reach into each box and guess what inside.
08:53Not by looking, but by feeling.
08:55If they think that item matches with one on list, they must try to remember number of box it is in.
09:03Once brainey have felt all seven boxes, then have 15 seconds to identify which box they are in.
09:12Brainey with least number of correct answer will be eliminated from Dojo.
09:18My brainey tip for this task is to focus on just the items on the list
09:24and mentally tick them off as they fill each box.
09:28Work those frontal lobes.
09:30If you want to know what our braineys don't, here's what's on their shopping list today.
09:38In blue box number two, we have spaghetti.
09:42Orange box five hides an apple.
09:46In yellow box six, we have jelly.
09:49A banana is in purple box number four.
09:52And in green box number three, grapes.
09:55But there's also two distractions for our braineys.
09:58In pink box number one are maggots.
10:00And in red box number seven, some peas.
10:04And if all that wasn't enough to make our braineys think differently,
10:07you'll also have noticed we've jumbled up the box numbers.
10:11Three, two, one, it's going the gong.
10:13Braineys have just five seconds to identify each item before moving on to the next box.
10:21Not being able to see the items, the challenge is to use their training to think in a new way.
10:26Their hands must become their eyes as they focus solely on their sense of touch.
10:30So, has Super Sam worked out that he's found an apple?
10:36Have Kirsten's frontal lobes told her that she's touching a banana?
10:41And can Lucy remember that the grapes are in box number three?
10:47I always found those maggots and she don't look happy.
10:50Come on, Sam, it's not going to bite.
11:00And if you don't touch that apple, Lee-Voo, how will you know what it is?
11:10After touching those maggots, Awa has become totally freaked out about going anywhere near the other boxes.
11:16Can she remember her training and keep her focus?
11:20Time's up.
11:32Our braineys have 15 seconds to work out their answers.
11:38Here's that list again.
11:43And here are the box numbers.
11:48There's the final gong.
11:50So, who's benefited from the training and allowed their brains to think in a new way?
11:58Super Sam matched all five items with the correct box.
12:01As did Ben and cool Kirsten.
12:08Lucy, though, only managed to match the one item.
12:11And with Lee-Voo and Saha both matching three items each, it all hangs on Awa, and whether her panic got the better of her.
12:26But incredibly, she also matched three items on her list, which means that it's Lucy who must hand over her yellow brain belt and leave the dojo.
12:35I think the problem was I just was under pressure, so I didn't make sure I had the correct answers when I was checking them.
12:52So, with five levels to go, it's Sam, Ben, Kirsten, Lee-Voo, Saha, and Awa, who line up for their orange brain belts.
13:04The maggots, they were like boys.
13:09You know what I mean.
13:10Yeah.
13:10That's basically boosted my confidence a whole lot more, because I was first to get into the dojo, and I was also got top marks, five out of five, in the touchy-feely contest-y thingy.
13:25I know Sam's really confident, and I know he wants to win, but I would say good luck, because he's got no chance at all.
13:30I will completely thrash him.
13:31Brainy, not so brainy.
13:43Who's the clever clogs, and whose brain needs a lot more training?
13:47The Goggle Box.
13:48What an invention.
13:49And it's all down to this geezer from Bonnie, Scotland, Mr. John Logie Baird.
13:53John was too ill to fight in the First World War, so he spent ten years tinkering with electronics, until bingo!
13:59Bingo!
13:59He goes and discovers a way of sending pictures through thin air, and TV was born.
14:04Truly visionary.
14:06Oi, look, it's John Logie Baird again.
14:08Did you know that before he invented television, he faffed around trying to make diamonds by heating graphite?
14:14That's the stuff you get in pencils.
14:15So, did it work?
14:17Did it heck?
14:17He cut off Glasgow's power supply.
14:20Are you great numpty?
14:21Brainy, John Logie Baird.
14:23Not so brainy, John Logie Baird.
14:28Brain Jitsu.
14:29Competition in Brain Jitsu Dojo hotting up.
14:34Only six brainy now remain to battle it out on the watchful eye of Sheehan.
14:39Super Sam, winner of first two level.
14:43Ben, hot on his heel.
14:45I will completely thrash him.
14:47Cool Kirsten, calm under pressure.
14:51Awa, lucky to get through last task.
14:53I don't think yellow's my colour.
14:55Maybe black?
14:56Livu.
14:56And steady Saha.
15:00Challenge is about to get even tougher.
15:03Only two brainy will make final test.
15:05Table of supreme four cards.
15:07Where?
15:08Must move ball with power of mind for chance to win.
15:12Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt.
15:14It's time for level three.
15:17Who is that?
15:18Now, we all like to chat.
15:21But did you know that using words to communicate is one of the main reasons why our brains have grown so incredibly powerful?
15:29And that having a conversation exercises both halves of the brain.
15:34Now, if all that's doing your head in, allow me to explain.
15:39Imagine you're on a movie set where each crew member is focusing on their own particular job.
15:45But the director, he has to be aware of what everyone's doing.
15:50It's the same with the brain.
15:52There's the left half, which deals with the details.
15:54And there's the right half, which looks at the overall picture.
15:57This next level of training strengthens my brainy's focus by working one half of their brain under pressure.
16:05Hey, pump it up!
16:12It's our brainy's second visit to the Room of Mental Nourishment, where once again they'll train for the next challenge.
16:17Which, remember, is all about using the two halves of the brain to communicate.
16:22Brain training.
16:23Get into two groups.
16:25One group describes the picture in front of them.
16:27The other group draws it.
16:28So, while the girls use the right side of their brain to explain how to draw the teddy bear,
16:33the boys must use the left side of their brain to interpret the girls' instructions.
16:38Steady Sahar kicks things off.
16:39Curved line.
16:41From the two points.
16:43E4 and E3 and E4.
16:44So, yeah.
16:45So, like, over the circle?
16:46Not over the circle.
16:47On top of the circle.
16:48OK, yeah.
16:50And until that curve line, draw a, um...
16:54But her instructions are getting more and more unclear, and Ben's as lost as a tourist in Tokyo.
17:00Yeah.
17:01Sahar tries again.
17:02You see, like, E3 and E4, don't do the circle in the middle.
17:05Don't.
17:05Yeah, don't.
17:06We've already done one on E3.
17:08OK, just cross that out.
17:10OK, go on.
17:10Oh, OK, I think we've done this a bit wrong.
17:12I'll say.
17:13Do you know what it is yet?
17:15No.
17:15Is it glasses?
17:16No.
17:16Oh, dear.
17:17Time for a training tip.
17:20Use short, clear instructions.
17:22Imagine yourself hearing me.
17:23Yeah, and also, when you tell some instructions, don't go back to the previous one and then tell
17:28us on the earth about that.
17:29Could we have just lost you?
17:30You tell them, son.
17:32You see, the girls must imagine exactly what information the boys need, because good communication
17:37is all about putting yourself in someone else's shoes.
17:40Is it, sir?
17:40In F3, in the middle, in the middle of F3.
17:43Yeah.
17:43Draw a small circle.
17:44We've done that.
17:45It's not linked to anything else, it's just in the middle.
17:47Yeah.
17:48We've lost you, we don't know what I'm saying anymore.
17:50We are completely...
17:51Yeah.
17:52Come on, girls, remember that training tip.
17:55Can you guess what it is?
17:56It doesn't look like anything.
17:57Oh, my God.
17:58Oh, my gosh.
17:59Isn't it?
18:00That is a top ring.
18:01Oh, there's a duck.
18:02What is that?
18:03It looks laughing like a teddy bear, doesn't it?
18:05No.
18:06Yeah.
18:07That went very, very badly.
18:10I didn't know where they got the diamond from.
18:12Because we told them curved lines.
18:15They don't know what they're talking about.
18:16Just because when they gave us instructions, it was wrong.
18:20I tried to get really good instructions, but obviously they're not very good at listening.
18:24Can our brainies improve their communication skills in time for the next task?
18:29It's time to find out as our six now put their train in to the test.
18:36Barrel tip two mats quick.
18:38This is test of communication skill.
18:41So, six brainy must first divide into teams of two by drawing chopsticks.
18:46Quickly as possible, team must tip over six barrel containing number that go together to make sound.
18:56Pairs need to decide who is guider, who is tipper.
18:59As tippers will be blindfolded, they will be relying on guider to help them find barrel.
19:05Once all six have been tipped, brainies stop clock by shouting,
19:11RINJITSU!
19:12Quicker they up-end barrels, more time to pick up number and make some.
19:18When brainy happy with answer, hit gong!
19:21First two teams to work out correct answer will get green belt and advance to next level.
19:30One brainy from losing team will be eliminated.
19:33The key to success here is for the guider to use the right side of their brain to follow their team mate's progress and give them clear instructions.
19:43For their partner, it's vital they use the left side of their brain to focus on these instructions and nothing else.
19:51First to put their communication training to the test are steady Sahar and Ben.
19:57Given Ben wasn't too impressed with Sahar during training, how will the two work together as a team?
20:02OK, take one step forward.
20:06OK, put your arm up.
20:07Move it left a bit.
20:09Move your arm, yeah.
20:11The pair get off to a shaky start.
20:12No, the other way, that's left.
20:14Back a bit.
20:15Sahar confusing her left with her right.
20:17There, pull.
20:18Take two steps forward.
20:21But then their training kicks in and the pair begin to speed up.
20:25There, pull.
20:25Tip.
20:26One step right.
20:29Arm up.
20:30Tip.
20:31Left.
20:33Move two steps right.
20:35Tip.
20:36Blip range hit soon.
20:37Eventually stopping the clock in one minute, 27 seconds.
20:42How much time it's earned them to find their numbers, we'll have to wait and see.
20:45Next up are the boys, Super Sam and Leivu.
20:51Now, put your arm up.
20:53Tip hard.
20:55With Sam doing the guiding, Leivu is obviously benefiting from his partner's clear instructions.
21:02Move forwards.
21:04Tip.
21:06Go to the left.
21:08Tip.
21:09Brain jutsu.
21:12Brain jutsu.
21:13Their last barrel tip.
21:14The boys stop the clock in one minute, 30 seconds.
21:17Just three seconds slower than the blue team.
21:22Last to go are cool Kirsten and Awa.
21:25Put your arm up.
21:27And tip.
21:28Two steps forward.
21:30Of all her brainees, Kirsten is the only one using the left side of her brain to give precise instructions,
21:37telling Awa exactly how many steps she must take.
21:40Two steps to the right.
21:43And tip.
21:49Right on mark.
21:50Tip.
21:51It's a good performance.
21:53Brain jutsu.
21:54And but for a lack of speed across the floor, their time of 1 minute 34 would have been even better.
22:03As the fastest to tip all six barrels, it's steady Sahar and Ben who set off first to find their numbers,
22:09with the others following at five second intervals.
22:15Here's what our brainees are looking for.
22:17See if you can work out the sum.
22:19Remember, the first two teams to work it out will go through to the next level.
22:23Saha and Ben are the first to gong, followed by Awa and Kirsten, with Sam and Lievu bringing up the rear.
22:37But do the numbers add up?
22:42Nine times two minus six equals twelve.
22:47That looks good.
22:48In fact, all our teams have found the right answer
22:54But as the last to finish, it's Sam and Livu
22:58Who must now battle it out to avoid elimination
23:00In the...
23:02Stare off
23:03With just one green belt up for grabs
23:07Both brainies must use all their powers of focus
23:10To fight the urge to blink
23:12The first to falter will be eliminated
23:14And it's Livu who goes from think to blink
23:22While Super Sam's staring skills have brought him a step closer
23:26To that elusive black belt
23:27The only thing Livu's now staring at is elimination
23:30Walk of eternal regret
23:37After the brain training, I felt pretty confident
23:41But it all fell down
23:42While we're dealing with Sam
23:43We didn't communicate well enough
23:46And we should have worked more quickly
23:48So, with four levels to go
23:51It's Sam, Ben, Kirsten, Sahar and Awa
23:55Who line up for their green belts
23:57Sahar was better in the task than she was in training
24:00Because she wasn't doing the instructions I was
24:02Actually, I hate to admit it
24:04But Ben was actually very good at giving instructions
24:06This fourth level requires our brainies to master a primitive part of the brain
24:22Called the amygdala
24:24The area that responds to threat
24:26Remember the last time you felt afraid or panicky?
24:34Maybe that time you were about to take a really crucial penalty
24:37Well, that feeling was triggered by the old amygdala
24:41Now, stress can make you lose focus
24:44Fact
24:45Which is why my brainies must train to keep their emotions under control
24:51Room of Mental Nourishment
24:54We're back in the Room of Mental Nourishment
24:57And it's time for our five remaining green belt holders
25:00To overcome their fear and stay focused
25:03Form a circle
25:05Pass the disgusting drink around the circle
25:07Only passing it on when you have said a different word
25:11Ending in the letter D
25:12After one minute
25:13The brainy holding the drink has to drink it
25:17But hey, drink what?
25:19Mmm, cod liver oil
25:21How have your brainies get cracking?
25:24Dead
25:25But
25:28Wicked
25:30Farted
25:31Bed
25:33And before long, they're passing round that glass as rapidly as a ninja performing backflips
25:39Pooed
25:40Good work, brainies
25:43Um, food
25:45There's the gong
25:49And it's Awa who's left holding the drink
25:51But she takes it on the chin and bravely knocks back the glass of gloop
25:58What does a drink taste like?
26:04Um, coddy
26:05Time for a training tip
26:08Concentrate
26:10Try to blank out the time and fear of the drink to avoid panicking
26:13I don't get that
26:15Basically it means that you've got to concentrate more
26:17But don't, like, don't think of, um, how fast the time's going
26:22Or the fear of the drink
26:23So avoid the panicking, basically
26:25Exactly, Sam
26:28You see, by keeping your emotions under control
26:30It'll help you focus in almost any pressure situation
26:33Like dreaded exams, for example
26:36Clapped
26:36Planted
26:38Walloped
26:39Walloped
26:39Once again, our brainies are doing a great job of keeping their amygdalas under control
26:44Except for Brave Hour, who's beginning to hesitate
26:50Is the memory of that drink getting in the way of her concentration, I wonder
26:54Um, painted
26:59Dumped
27:01There's the second gong
27:06And this time it's Super Sam
27:08Who has to sample the slimy slop
27:10Three
27:11Two
27:12One
27:12Drinks
27:12Here
27:13Isn't cod liver oil meant to be good for you?
27:19It's meant to clear our own spots, I think
27:22Sorry
27:27Based on that training, I think Hour might be eliminated
27:32I drank it, didn't I?
27:35So, will Brave Hour recover from the taste of that cod liver oil in time to find our focus?
27:40Or will Ben's prediction come true?
27:44It's time to find out as Hour 5 are challenged to overcome their fear once again
27:49Creepy, crotty, word grab
27:52This level, real test of mind over matter for brainies
27:57And will push them to really overcome their fear
27:59Underneath the creepy crawlies lie an assortment of letters worth different points
28:04Brainies have just one minute to plunge hands into tank
28:08And pick out up to seven letters each
28:10They then have a further minute to make higher scoring word they can
28:15To do well, my brainies must block out the signals coming from their amygdala
28:22And ignore the creepy crawlies
28:24The quicker they combat their fear, the more time they'll have to pick out the high scoring letters
28:29Underneath this pile of cockroaches are an extra five golden letters
28:39If our brainies manage to use one in their word, they'll double their score
28:43Brave words from Ben, by telling himself over and over that the cockroaches pose no threat
28:53He's doing a great job of keeping his fear at bay
28:55There's the gong, and straight off Hour looks to be in a bit of a panic
29:02Kirsten on the other hand looks as cool as a sea cucumber
29:07Holy karaoke, Sam's found one of the golden letters
29:13If he can use it in a word, he'll double his score
29:15The minute's up
29:21Our brainies now have another minute to make the highest scoring word they can from their letters
29:25For all our early panic, ours still managed to pluck out several letters
29:34I don't think you'll find that in the dictionary
29:39See if you can make a word from the anagram that's on the screen now
29:43There's the final gong
29:54Over our brainies done
29:55Titch
30:00A quick check in the dictionary, and that's a whopping 16 points for Super Sam
30:09Sawyer
30:12That's 7 points for Fearless Ben
30:15Pet
30:175 points for Cool Kirsten
30:19Repel
30:21A respectable 8 points for Steady Sahar
30:25Quiet
30:27And a quite lovely 13 points for Brave Hour
30:31And so it's Cool Kirsten who must hand over her brain belt and leave the dojo
30:39Book of Eternal Regret
30:47I think it went wrong because I chose the wrong letters
30:50So I ended up getting short words and I ran out of time
30:55So with three levels to go, those who use their craniums to conquer the cockroaches are duly rewarded with their blue belts
31:04I didn't get very good letters, so I just had to think of any random word and hope it was a word
31:09I've been scared of insects all of my life
31:11I just feel, I can feel them crawling all over me
31:15Can I go now?
31:18Brain T2
31:23Brainy, not so brainy
31:28Who's the clever clogs and whose brain needs a lot more training?
31:33Emails, internet brain training computer games
31:35None of which would be possible without John Vincent Atanasoff
31:38Who invented the first ever electronic digital computer back in 1937
31:43www.computerboffintastic.com
31:46Now, back in 1988, another electronic boffin called Robert Morris
31:49Created the first computer virus
31:51And had the bright idea of releasing it onto the internet as a harmless experiment
31:55Problem was, his little virus quickly grew out of control
31:59Causing millions of computers to crash worldwide
32:01And costing the US government alone over $10 million
32:05Now that is what I call a bad day at the office
32:08Brainy, John Atanasoff
32:11Not so brainy, Robert Morris
32:14Brain T2
32:17Attention in Brain T2 Dojo mounting
32:21Now, just four young hopeful remain to compete under watchful eye of
32:25Sheehan
32:26Super Sam, winner of three levels so far
32:30He just don't want to lose now
32:31Brave Awa
32:33Steady Saha, dark horse of group
32:36I hope I've done enough to sort of get to the end
32:39And fearless Ben
32:41I think I'm ready now to beat everyone else
32:43Only two brainy will make final showdown
32:46Table of supreme focus
32:48Where must move ball with power of mind
32:51Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt is within the grasp
32:54Now, if you're learning how to ride a half pipe on a BMX bike
33:05Then you might be interested to know that your new hobby is doing wonders for your old grey matter
33:11Exercising both the thinking part of the brain, the cerebrum, and the doing part, the cerebellum
33:18You see, doing new things increases the flow of blood into your head
33:22Which keeps your brain cells topped up with the oxygen they need to perform at their best
33:28So, in level five, my brainy's are going to be challenged to learn new skills
33:33Now, you can speed up how quickly the brain takes in new stuff
33:38And this is what our brainy's are going to train for now
33:41Room of mental nourishment
33:45It's our brainy's fourth visit to the room of mental nourishment
33:49Where they'll be training their brains in how to learn new skills
33:53Brain training
33:55Spin the drumsticks between your fingers for as long as possible
33:58That's easy, I'm a drummer
34:00In that case, Ben, there should be no excuses
34:03While most of our brainy's start twirling those drumsticks as skilfully as a troupe of majorettes
34:09Sam's having a spot to bother
34:11This is tiring
34:15I need more crisps to put energy in me
34:19Now, that hour is the most feeble excuse I've ever heard
34:23Nice twirling from Ben
34:26But Sam's still struggling
34:29I give up
34:32Oh dear, time for a training tip
34:36Be confident in yourself
34:39Look in the mirror and tell yourself you can do it
34:42Well, I look good
34:47It might seem weird telling yourself that you're wonderful
34:50But self-confidence really can help the brain to master new skills
34:55If you can do it, twiddle, twisty, turny thingy
34:58Where the brain's concerned, there's no such word as can't
35:02You can twiddle as much as the mighty twiddler of God and twiddler himself
35:06I am the best, I can get the blackmailed
35:08I am the best at everything
35:10That's the spirit, Ben, you beg yourself for
35:13That's how you do it
35:14I can do it
35:14I can beat the boys
35:16You will win
35:17I love the twiddling
35:18You look really nice and you smell gorgeous
35:20Oh, mighty gracious one
35:23Oh, I've been going for a long time, actually
35:24You see, Sam, there's nothing like a bit of self-confidence when tackling a new skill
35:28I know where you live
35:30The person who I think is eliminated next, I reckon, probably could beat our game, sorry
35:39Well, king of fiddle sticks or whatever you call yourself
35:42I can fiddle more than you
35:46And think about yourself, man
35:48You dropped the sticks so many times
35:50So will Super Sam's super new twiddling skills set him up for another task win
35:56Will Brave Hour's newfound confidence give her the edge
36:01Only time will tell as our four now put their brain training to the test
36:06Quick, quick, don't drip
36:10Brainy must use training to keep clear head and steady hand
36:16To carry water across obstacle course
36:19Spilling as little as possible
36:21There is trampoline to glide over
36:23Seesaw to deal with
36:25And stairs to climb
36:27But blue belt holders also racing against clock
36:32And the faster their time, the more points they can add to their total
36:36Brainy with lower score will be eliminated
36:38The tip for my brainies in this next task is to
36:44Remain calm
36:47And think positive thoughts
36:49Giving in to frustration will only lessen their focus and slow them up
36:53The Sheehan fills the balls and the tension begins to mount
36:58But which of our four brainies will best use their confidence training
37:02To master this tricky new skill?
37:04First up is Super Sam
37:09Ooh, but that's some precious water gone already
37:15Sam's certainly fast, but in sacrificing steadiness for speed, is he making a big mistake?
37:26A few more drops lost on the steps
37:34And there's the gong, so how's he done?
37:42Brainy's get a point for every unit of water saved and further bonus points for speed
37:46From three points for the quickest to zero for the slowest
37:50With 18 units of water left, that's 18 points for Sam
37:56But we'll have to wait to discover if he's picked up any bonus points for speed
38:00Next up it's Fearless Ben
38:05A little spill there right at the start
38:15And a lot more lost there on the trampoline
38:23And as the seesaw strikes, Ben's losing more water than a sumo in a sauna
38:34So, how much liquid has he left?
38:46That's 16 units, which means 16 points
38:50It's now steady Sahar's turn
38:54But that's most definitely not a steady start
39:02That mini-tsunami aside, this is still a confident performance from Sahar
39:12Or should that be Sahara?
39:15Because that ball's looking almost as dry as a desert
39:18And 19 units of water means 19 points
39:25Last to go is Brave Hour
39:29Will she remember her training and stay positive?
39:37Again, a little leak at the start there
39:39But then her training does indeed kick in
39:44With the thinking part and the doing part of Hour's brain working in perfect harmony
39:50She's literally racing across the course
39:52One more spillage with the end in sight
39:56And Hour's home and very dry
40:00With 21 points for all that saved water
40:05And a good chance of bonus points
40:07Surely Hour's done enough
40:09Let's find out
40:10Finishing in 39 seconds
40:15Super Sam was the second fastest
40:17Bringing him two bonus points
40:19Added to his 18 points for those 18 units of saved water
40:22That gives him a total of 20
40:24Finishing in 57 seconds
40:28Ben was slowest
40:30Which means nothing to add to his total of 16 points
40:32Steady Sahara picked up one bonus point for her time
40:38Giving her a total of 20 points
40:40While Hour with a time of 37 seconds
40:44Picked up the maximum three bonus points
40:46Giving her a total of 24
40:48Which means that it's fearless Ben
40:52Who's eliminated
40:53And must leave the dojo
40:55Walk of eternal regret
41:03I am very disappointed
41:05To be out at this stage
41:07Because I was very close
41:08And I really wanted to get black belt
41:09But yeah
41:10I think I got quite far
41:11So I'm happy
41:12So with two levels to go
41:17That just leaves Sam
41:18Sahara
41:19And Hour
41:20Just damn proud in red
41:22Some kids said I'm going to be out
41:24But I'm not
41:25And they're out instead
41:27And I'm happy
41:28Because now I'm in the same final
41:29Ben's gone
41:30I've got no rival now
41:32Brain Tito
41:36Level six
41:39Roll boat
41:41It's this level
41:43Which will decide
41:44Which two of my remaining brainies
41:47Will go on to battle it out
41:49For the black belt
41:51Now imagine you're a gymnast
41:55Not only do you have your routine to remember
41:57But you've got to keep in time to the music
42:00And you've got a load of people watching you
42:03It's remembering stuff like this under pressure
42:06That level six is all about
42:08It centres around three areas of the brain
42:11The seeing part
42:13The occipital lobes
42:14The memory part
42:16The temporal lobes
42:17And the movement part
42:19The cerebellum
42:20To the max
42:22Room of mental nourishment
42:26Our three surviving brainies are back in the room of mental nourishment
42:32This time for some memory training
42:35Brain training
42:37Memorise the sequence of objects
42:39On all of them
42:41What is this for?
42:43It's a gnome
42:43You could hear a grain of rice drop
42:46As our brainies focus on the objects
42:48Their temporal lobes work in overtime
42:51Finished
42:56Off you go then, Ewa
42:57Chicken
42:59Mouse
43:00Bell
43:01Gnome
43:01Toilet
43:02Egg
43:03Hammer
43:04Wand
43:05Eiffel Tower
43:06Glasses
43:07A poison bottle
43:08Cabbage
43:09Crocodile
43:10Chicken
43:11And that's it
43:12That's a pretty good effort
43:14Can Sam do as well?
43:15I bet I ain't gonna get anything
43:16I can't remember my own name sometimes
43:18Time
43:18Hey young Samuel
43:20That's enough of that
43:21In brain jitsu
43:22There's no such word as can't
43:24Roast chicken
43:24Frog
43:27Crocodile
43:28Pot of crackers
43:29Rast of water
43:31Empty bowl
43:31That's it
43:33What does I miss?
43:36You miss the mouse
43:37The gnome
43:39The toilet
43:39You miss pretty much everything
43:42Yeah
43:42Yeah
43:43Time for a training tip
43:44Create a story linking the objects together
43:48First tip and change them all into a different order
43:50Memory training like this isn't just great for the brain
43:54It's also very useful
43:55Next time you're out and about
43:57Create a story from all the street names in your area
44:00And see if you can remember them all
44:02Sitting comfortably
44:04There once was a gnome who was a secret magician with a wand
44:06He had poison, eyeballs and even frogs
44:09Sat on the loo with fried egg
44:11Ew
44:12I think you want to get through
44:13Because you're quite good
44:15And you remember things quickly
44:16I'm not sure if I might go
44:19Because I'm not
44:19I don't remember things at all
44:21In the right order
44:22I think that the tip worked
44:24And that's really going to help me in the next task
44:26More than the other ones
44:27So will Steady Sahar's lack of confidence be a downfall
44:31And will that training tip help Super Sam
44:34Only time will tell
44:38As our final three put their memory training to the test
44:40For one of two brown brain belts
44:42And a place on the table of supreme focus
44:46Super memory dizzy dance
44:50A brainy is a spin around on busy wheel
44:54Total of ten time
44:55While using all power of focus
44:57To memorize five images in front of them
45:00Then must rise against clock
45:03To cross balancing beam
45:04And collect exact opposite
45:06Of those image from ten hanging above them
45:10If brainy remember seeing sun
45:12Then must pick moon
45:14When happy they have arranged images in correct order
45:18Must hit gong to make clock stop
45:21My tip for the brainy's
45:24Is to keep focused on the main objective
45:27And use their training
45:28To link the five images together
45:30Time to spin
45:35As our final three brave the dizzy wheel
45:40Will their memory training help them to remember the images
45:43And ignore the effects of being spun round
45:45Like tadpoles in a tornado
45:47First up is Sam
45:52Don't forget our brainy's must fight the dizziness
45:55And pick out the opposite images
45:57Of the ones they saw on the wheel
45:58So here are the images that Sam saw
46:04And here are their opposites
46:05As Sam remembered his training
46:08And linked those pictures together
46:09I don't think he wants that monkey
46:17For every image Sam gets wrong
46:21There's a five second penalty
46:22The brainy with the slowest time
46:24Will be eliminated from the dojo
46:26There's the gong
46:31And with those two mistakes
46:32Sam will have a nervous wait
46:34To see how the others perform
46:35Next to spin is steady Sahar
46:41Lacking in confidence after her last training session
46:44But she's made a good start
46:47Plucking down those first couple of images in no time
46:50But what's this?
46:54Suffering sumos
46:55Sahar's having a complete mental block
46:58Come on Sahar
47:00Work those temporal lobes
47:02So far so good
47:10But oh dear
47:13That looks like 15 seconds worth of penalties to me
47:16Last to go is Brave Hour
47:20Steady there
47:24Don't forget
47:33As well as trying to remember the images
47:35Our brainy's are racing against the clock
47:37And ours definitely dawdling
47:39There's the gong
47:55But with those two mistakes
47:57Has Arwa done enough?
48:01With two penalties to add to his time of 1 minute 19
48:05Sam finished in 1 minute 29 seconds
48:08Steady Sahar picked up three penalties
48:12Giving her a time of 1 minute 48
48:14And even though Brave Hour only picked up two penalties
48:20Added to her time of 1 minute 57
48:23That still gives her a final time of 2 minutes 7 seconds
48:27So it's Sam and Sahar who remain in
48:31And Brave Hour who goes out
48:33Walk of eternal regret
48:40I think my time was slow because I was confused
48:46And I was dizzy
48:47I'm feeling quite upset because I didn't think I was going to win
48:51But I didn't think I was going to lose as well
48:54So with just one level to go
48:58That leaves Sam and Sahar
49:00To don their brown brain belts
49:02In preparation for the final showdown
49:04I did not expect that
49:06I'm so happy
49:08I've got what it takes now
49:10I want that black belt so much
49:12As if I can say it with my name on it
49:14Brain Jitsu
49:19Eight young hopeful arrived at Brain Training Dojo
49:25To fight for Brain Jitsu Black Brain Bell
49:28As training got tougher
49:30So Brain East fell by wayside
49:32Some lack focus
49:33Others confidence
49:35Now just two remain
49:37Super Sam
49:38Winner of three levels so far
49:40And Steady Sahar who hung in there
49:43And has shown her mental toughness
49:45But who will use Brain Training to the max
49:48To win last challenge
49:50Level 7
49:52Black Belt
49:53So this is it
49:57Between my two remaining brainies
49:59And the black belt
50:00Stands Brain Jitsu's ultimate challenge
50:03A mental duel that is head to head
50:06In every sense
50:08The battlefield
50:09A table
50:10But not just any table
50:12For this my friends
50:13Is the table of supreme focus
50:16Where our two brainies
50:18Will attempt to move a ball across the table
50:20Using only
50:21The power of their mind
50:24By getting this far
50:25They've already demonstrated
50:27Mental control
50:28Under many different types of pressure
50:30But now
50:31They must learn to focus their minds
50:33By entering a state
50:34Of total calm
50:36To prepare them
50:37My two finalists
50:38Will need to get into
50:39The zone
50:41Room of mental nourishment
50:44Yay!
50:46In this their final visit
50:47To the room of mental nourishment
50:49Our last two brainies
50:50Are about to train
50:51In how to stay focused
50:53No matter what's happening
50:54Around them
50:55Mentally prepare yourself
50:58For the final task
50:59Don't let the sounds
51:00Put you off
51:00So our two finalists
51:03Must block out the noises
51:04And concentrate only
51:05On finding their focus
51:07Is that a pig?
51:09I keep scaring on you!
51:09But instead of focusing
51:10Our brainies seem more interested
51:12In having a chat
51:13It's hard to know
51:15Whether Sam is trying to block out
51:17The sound of those pigs
51:18Or Saha
51:19Time for a tip
51:22Visualise and focus on
51:24Somewhere you feel happy
51:26And calm
51:26That's more like it brainies
51:36In order to make me feel calm
51:44I just stared forward
51:46And basically thought
51:48Of winning the black belt
51:49It made me feel comfortable
51:50So will Super Sam realise
51:54His black belt dream
51:56Or will it be steady Saha
51:57Who comes out on top?
51:59Let's find out
52:00A table of supreme focus
52:05Rules are simple
52:09Each brainy must push ball
52:11To the opponent's end of table
52:12Using only power of mind
52:15Sensors in brainy's headbands
52:17Measure brainwaves
52:18This is converted into electrical signal
52:21Which moves ball
52:22More focused mind
52:24Stronger signal
52:26And faster ball will travel
52:27See how brainies are doing
52:30On this readout
52:31Two lines represent
52:33Each player's brainwaves
52:34Lower the line
52:35More concentrated their mind
52:37To make sure
52:43This is the test of all tests
52:44Our brainies must win
52:46The best of three rounds
52:47So this is the big one
52:53Our two finalists
52:56Must use all their brain training
52:58To enter their zone
52:59Of absolute focus
53:00This is the reason
53:04They came to the dojo
53:05This is the moment
53:07They've been training for
53:08Sam is first
53:18To get the ball rolling
53:19But almost immediately
53:20Saha pushes him back
53:22You can see from the lines
53:25On the readout
53:25Just how little there is
53:26Between them
53:27But then Sam's green line
53:37Suddenly goes all over the place
53:39His focus clearly gone
53:41It's 1-0
53:48And Sam will have to dig deep
53:50And call on all his training
53:52If he's to turn this around
53:53Round two
53:59This time it's Saha
54:12Who's quickest out of the blocks
54:14Her lower black line
54:16Showing that she's focusing
54:17The better of the two
54:18What's more
54:22There's no let up
54:23Saha quickly finishing the job
54:31That's it
54:33It's all over
54:34And it's Saha
54:35Who's come out on top
54:37To prove herself
54:38A true master of the mind
54:40And worthy winner
54:41Of the black belt
54:42Of brain jitsu
54:43I'm so happy
54:47I didn't expect it
54:49I'm so really
54:51Just over
54:51But I'm so glad
54:53But glory for one
54:55Brings disappointment
54:57For another
54:57And although he battled
54:59Valiantly
54:59Super Sam
55:00Must now leave the dojo
55:02Warp of eternal
55:08Rest
55:09I think the reason was
55:11Basically that I had
55:12More worries
55:13In my head
55:13And Saha may have been
55:14Clear of worries
55:15But I thought
55:16I had a good chance
55:18Because I'm lazy
55:19And I like to relax
55:21I'm gutted to lose
55:23What a display of focus
55:32From steady Saha
55:33Up against the toughest
55:35Of opponents
55:35This determined young
55:36Brainee
55:37Refused to buckle
55:38Under the mental strain
55:40And when the pressure
55:41Mounted
55:41It was Saha
55:42Who was able to
55:43Call on all her training
55:44And grab that
55:45Black brain belt
55:46The way I move the balls
55:50The same as I used
55:51In the training
55:52I thought
55:52Feathers
55:53And white lace
55:54And sort of
55:55Calm thing
55:55A lesson I've learnt
55:59From all this
56:00Has been not to doubt
56:01Myself
56:01That I can really do it
56:03And that
56:04To always think positive
56:06Because deep down now
56:08I know I can do something
56:09Our journey
56:10Has come to an end
56:11Another brainee
56:13Has proven themselves
56:14Worthy
56:14To wear the brain jitsu
56:16Black belt
56:17But while brain jitsu
56:19Might represent
56:20The most extreme
56:21Form of brain training
56:22Its philosophy
56:23Can be shared
56:24By all
56:26Each and every one of you
56:28Has it in your power
56:29To grow your mind
56:31All it takes
56:32Is dedication
56:33And practice
56:34This
56:35Has been
56:36Brain jitsu
56:39Brain jitsu
56:39You
