00:00...or insects were harmed in the making of this program,
00:02and that none of the training you're about to see be attempted unless under expert supervision.
00:08Eight braineas, one challenge.
00:20To use complex mass of 100 billion cells we call Brain,
00:25for chance to win Brain Jutsu Black Brain Belt, this is...
00:30Brain Jutsu!
00:37Born in Lancashire, trained in Japan, with mind as sharp as samurai sword,
00:42he is Brain Master, he is the Sensei!
00:46Konnichiwa, and welcome to Brain Jutsu!
00:51Mental training specially designed to boost brain power and focus.
00:56My trainees, or brainies, have been following a basic program of training in the comfort of their own home.
01:03A brain-boosting routine of exercise, sleep, and enough fruit and veg to stock a greengrocer's.
01:10I really want to win the black belt because it'll give me, like, more dignity and give me more self-confidence.
01:16We've done so much training, to be honest, it's calming me down a lot.
01:19I really want the black belt!
01:21Now, my braineas must put their training into practice, by testing a part of the brain we use every day.
01:27Level one!
01:29You're no fault!
01:31Take a look at my very cluttered garage.
01:34Now, try to find the little rubber duck.
01:37Spotted, eh?
01:38Congratulations!
01:40You've just used your occipital lobes.
01:43This area, the seeing part of our brain, allows us to recognise and separate images from each other.
01:50The seven braineas, who use their occipital lobes the best, will be allowed to enter my Brain Jutsu Dojo, where their training will continue.
01:58The one who fails, will be left outside.
02:02Ho!
02:03Feel the burn.
02:04Enter the dojo!
02:08Our braineas must answer four questions by studying the different faces on the board in front of them.
02:15Get them right, and they'll be left with a four-digit code, which they must then use to unlock a piece of brain and secure their place in the dojo.
02:23But, with only seven pieces of brain and eight braineas, one of either Hayden, Ella, Arjun, Grace, Hayley, Dan Raj, Jack or Reece, will be left outside and eliminated.
02:39A bang of the gong reveals the four questions.
02:44How many green smiley faces are there?
02:47How many faces have freckles?
02:50How many yellow smiley faces are there?
03:07How many faces have one of you?
03:19The answer our brainies are looking for.
03:37It looks like Arjun is. He has to return to the noodle bar for a second helping.
03:51Hayden and Rhys haven't yet moved, really working those occipital lobes in search of the right combination.
03:58And it's Ella who's first to unlock a piece of brain with Dan Raj hot on her heels.
04:02Don't forget the code our brainies are looking for is 1694.
04:08As there is one green smiley face, six faces with freckles, nine yellow smiley faces and four faces with one ear.
04:19With two more brainies now through to the dojo, that leaves Hayden, Hayley, Grace and Jack to fight it out for the last three places.
04:27And it looks like someone really struggling. Come on brainies, keep that focus.
04:33With our brainies going backwards and forwards more times than a tennis rally, Jack at last pops up on his lock, followed by Hayley.
04:42Which just leaves Hayden and Grace.
04:47Suffering sumos, Hayden still hasn't got that combination. Can Grace now grab her opportunity?
04:53But she's not got it either. Surely Hayden can't slip up again?
05:00No chance.
05:02And as his piece of brain slots home, it's Hayden who's in and Grace who's out.
05:07While seven have proved themselves worthy of entering the dojo and continuing their brain training, for Grace it's the end of the road.
05:19I'm a bit disappointed, but it was hard though, it was quite hard. It required a lot of concentrating.
05:28The question I found really hard was to face the step one ear, because usually you got mixed up with two ears, so it was hard.
05:34So with six hours to go, it's time for Ella, Danraj, Arjun, Reece, Jack, Hayley and Hayden to receive their yellow brain belts.
05:45I was so nervous sitting there, because you could just hear the bits of brain drop, and I was like, that's another person. You have to hurry up.
05:54I feel really relieved that I'm here right now, and I just, I just prayed and prayed that I wouldn't have to go so early in this stage of the game.
06:02Brain jitter!
06:05In this next level of training, things are going to get really hard.
06:09Level two. Orange belt.
06:12We do things every day without even thinking about it, like using the remote control for the telly.
06:20But try turning up the volume with the hand that you don't normally use.
06:25Go on, a lot more harder, isn't it?
06:27If you manage to do that, you're using part of your brain that deals with problem solving.
06:32The frontal lobes.
06:34And that's what level two is all about.
06:37Taking something you normally do without thinking, and doing it differently.
06:40Work it!
06:42To prepare them for using their frontal lobes in this next challenge, our brainees are going to need some training.
06:48Room of Mental Nourishment.
06:50This is the room of mental nourishment, where our young hopefuls will train their brains between every task.
06:58The more seriously they take their training, the better prepared they'll be for the challenges that lie ahead.
07:03And in level two, that challenge is all about getting their brains to think in a new way.
07:08Brain training.
07:10Write the name of the braineer you think will win the black belt.
07:14Write backwards using your hand you don't normally write with.
07:18So, our brainees are going to be made to really think about something, like writing, that they'd normally do without thinking.
07:25Which one are you going to choose for who's going to win the black belt?
07:27I know.
07:28This is pretty hard.
07:30That's the whole point Hayden.
07:32If it was easy, it wouldn't be giving your brain a workout.
07:35Who did you do?
07:36I done Jack.
07:38Why?
07:39Because I think he's a very intelligent boy.
07:42That's one vote for Jack, and another.
07:44Who's a popular boy then?
07:46Has anyone chosen me?
07:47Uh-uh.
07:49Never mind Hayden, here's a brain tip.
07:53Picture the words in front of you before you write it.
07:57Think about each individual letter.
08:00If you want to work your frontal lobes and improve your all-round focus,
08:03writing backwards with your wrong hand is a great thing to do.
08:07But for Hayden, the exercise appears to have dented his confidence.
08:11You never know if you're going to win or not,
08:12and you know there are stronger people out of everyone than you.
08:15Then you.
08:16And out of everyone here, I'm probably the weakest.
08:20You shouldn't really put yourself down.
08:22Will Hayden get over his confidence crisis
08:24and find his focus in time for the next round?
08:27And will front-runner Jack live up to expectations?
08:31There's only one way to find out.
08:33It's time for our brainies to put their training to the test.
08:37Guardian of the Dojo and Task Adjudicator the Sheehan
08:41will now demonstrate the level two challenge.
08:43Spell backwards. Step forward.
08:46To stand chance of gaining orange belt,
08:49seven brainies must now think in reverse.
08:52Sheehan will show them picture.
08:54They have to say what is.
08:56That is cut.
08:58Then they spell word backwards.
09:00T-A-C.
09:01Get right and our brainies can step forward.
09:06Get wrong and they stay put.
09:08Brainies can choose length of word they want to spell backwards.
09:12Longer word, more time they get to answer.
09:15Three seconds for three letter word.
09:17Up to six seconds for six letters.
09:20More letters, more steps towards destination.
09:22There is slight advantage to going first in challenge.
09:26But order brainies take part is order they complete at level one.
09:30Whoever not finish will be eliminated from the dojo.
09:34My brainy tip here is to imagine the whole word
09:38and then break it down into groups of letters.
09:40Work those frontal lobes.
09:48Four.
09:50First to try and get her brain thinking differently is Ella.
09:53Drum.
09:55R-M-M-U-R.
09:59But it's not the start she was hoping for.
10:02Three.
10:03D-A-Raj meanwhile decides to play safe.
10:06E-R-A-E.
10:11Four.
10:14Lion.
10:15N-O-I-L.
10:17Lion.
10:18No hesitation for Arjun.
10:20Three.
10:22B-E-E-B.
10:27An easy beasy for Reece.
10:30Four.
10:31Next up is front runner Jack.
10:33Tank.
10:34K-N-A-T.
10:36Tank.
10:37And like the other boys it looks like his brain training has really paid off.
10:41Four.
10:43Duck.
10:44K-U-
10:46No.
10:47K-C-U-
10:49Hayley though comes unstuck with duck.
10:52It's now Aidan's turn.
10:53Four.
10:55Short on confidence after his training, can he now respond?
10:59Goat.
11:00T-A.
11:01T-A.
11:05Oh no.
11:06It's back to Ella.
11:08Three.
11:09Who this time gets off the mark.
11:11Mop.
11:12P-I-M.
11:14O-O-S.
11:15G-O-W.
11:16answers sees all seven braineas make good progress.
11:21Worm. M-R-O-W.
11:24But it's Arjun who's first to step onto the podium and claim an orange belt.
11:29Front runner Jack comes in second.
11:32And with Dan Raj, Reece and Hayley also claiming a place in the next level, that just leaves
11:37Ella and Hayden to battle it out for the last orange belt.
11:41Fire.
11:44E-R-I-F.
11:46And with that word, Hayden draws level.
11:49With both braineas now just a five-letter word away from a place in the next round, Ella
11:53decides to gamble and get the job done.
11:56Five.
11:58Watch.
12:00H-C-T-A-W.
12:05And she gets it.
12:07For Hayden, though, it's a sad sayonara, as he must hand over his brain belt and leave
12:12the dojo.
12:13Walk of eternal regret.
12:19It's just hard to spell backwards.
12:21I couldn't do it.
12:22I'm really disappointed that I went, but at the end of the day, someone has to go.
12:27And this time it was me.
12:28So, with five levels to go, it's time for Ella, Dan Raj, Arjun, Reece, Jack and Hayley to get
12:39their orange brain belts.
12:40I'm really, really relieved that I got through last round because I'm not very good at spelling.
12:48I was neck and neck with Hayden, so I just took a big risk and chose a five-letter word.
12:53And I felt really happy with myself after I'd done it.
12:57Brain T-Toon.
13:01Brainy.
13:02Not so brainy.
13:03Who's the clever clogs and whose brain needs a lot more training?
13:08Picture the scene.
13:09It's 250 years ago, and a lad called Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is only six years old and already
13:15playing the obstacle, composing amazing music and performing it to the Empress of Austria.
13:20But did he stop there?
13:21No, he did not.
13:22He only went on to write another 600 major works.
13:25Not bad for someone who only lived to the age of 35.
13:29Wolfgang-tastic.
13:30Get a load of this, what a racket.
13:33TV challenge shows are bursting at the seams with tuneless musical wannabes desperate for
13:37fame.
13:38Mr. Mozart will be turning in his grave.
13:41Brainy.
13:42Mozart.
13:43Not so brainy.
13:44Musical wannabes.
13:47Brain Jitsu.
13:50Pressure in Brain Jitsu Dojo Rising.
13:53Just six young hopeful remain to compete under Watchful Eye of Sheehan.
13:57Ella, first to enter Dojo.
14:01Front runner, Jack.
14:03Reese, steady throughout.
14:05I really want to win the black belt because it'll give me, like, more dignity and give
14:08me more self-confidence.
14:10Danraj, calm and collected.
14:12Hayley.
14:13I'm really, really relieved that I got through last round.
14:16And Arjan, winner of last level.
14:19Challenge is about to get even tougher.
14:22Only two brainy will make final test.
14:24Table of supreme focus.
14:26Where?
14:26Must move ball with power of mind.
14:28For chance to win, Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt is time for...
14:33Level three.
14:35Quiz belt.
14:37Now, we all like to chat.
14:39But did you know that using words to communicate is one of the main reasons why our brains have
14:45grown so incredibly powerful?
14:47And that having a conversation exercises both halves of the brain.
14:52Now, if all that's doing your head in, allow me to explain.
14:57Imagine you're the trumpet player in an orchestra.
15:00Your main focus is on your own notes.
15:03But the conductor, well, he has to listen for everyone's notes.
15:08It's the same with the brain.
15:10There's the left half, which deals with the details.
15:12And there's the right half, which looks at the overall picture.
15:16This next level of training strengthens my brainy's focus by working one half of their brain under pressure.
15:23Hey, pump it up!
15:26Room of mental nourishment.
15:30It's our brainy's second visit to the room of mental nourishment, where once again they'll train for the next challenge,
15:36which, remember, is all about using the two halves of the brain to communicate.
15:40So, while one group will use the right side of their brain to explain how to make the shape,
15:55the other group must use the left side of their brain to interpret the words.
16:01Arjun gets the ball rolling.
16:02So, at the bottom, there's one brick, which has four, like, kind of cylinder things at the top,
16:10goes right at the bottom.
16:12But Dan Raj and Hayley are finding it hard to get a word in edgeways.
16:15Four blocks going, like, vertically or horizontally.
16:19It fits onto one side of the square.
16:22Not put off by Hayley's interruption, Arjun continues with his one-man show.
16:26The other side, the other...
16:27Red.
16:27Red.
16:28But in his enthusiasm, he seems to have forgotten that hand signals are of little use to a team who can't see you.
16:34Is it like a similar version of the two-one?
16:36Yes.
16:37Meanwhile, Hayley's given up entirely.
16:41Is that what it's meant to look like?
16:43Let's see.
16:43Let's see.
16:44No.
16:45Put it almost like it.
16:46Hold it, almost.
16:47Oh, never mind.
16:48Time for a training tip.
16:50Tip.
16:51Use short, clear instructions.
16:53Imagine yourself hearing them.
16:56Understand?
16:56Yep.
16:57In other words, our guideers must think exactly what information the others need.
17:01Because good communication is all about putting yourself in somebody else's shoes.
17:07Oh, Brinny, start again.
17:08And it looks like this time Dan Raj is going to begin.
17:11Should we start from the beginning, then?
17:13Yeah.
17:14But wait.
17:15Arjun's obviously decided that he's been silent too long.
17:18And then you get the two rectangle ones, yeah?
17:21Yeah, it's got that.
17:22Yeah, from the right-hand side, like, on the right.
17:24It doesn't matter.
17:24Yeah.
17:25Yeah, is that it?
17:25Yeah.
17:25Yeah, just twist it.
17:26Whoa!
17:27We got it, we got it.
17:30No, I said it should be in the middle.
17:33So the bottom one should be at the middle, or the bottom cube.
17:36Oh, oh, right.
17:36It should be in the middle.
17:37But now it's right.
17:39Yes!
17:39Yes!
17:40Yes!
17:40Yes!
17:42The instructions were right, it's just, they weren't perfect.
17:46They could be better.
17:47I got really frustrated with Rhys because he showed the wrong block, even though I said a slice of four cylinders on it.
17:55I don't really think you should be frustrated with me because I don't really get it.
17:59And I think you could improve your instructions.
18:02I think you've got a point that I do rush, but I think I'll improve in my communication skills.
18:07So will Dan Raj's lack of practice cost him in the next task?
18:12And will forceful Arjun ever let anyone get a word in?
18:16It's time to find out as our six now put their communication training to the test.
18:21This is test of communication skill.
18:31So six brainy must first divide into teams of two by drawing chopsticks.
18:37As quickly as possible, teams must whack open six lanterns containing numbers that go together to form some.
18:45Pairs first need to decide who is guider, who is whacker.
18:48Whackers will be blindfolded and will be relying on guider to locate lanterns.
18:54When all six are open, brainy stop clock by shouting,
18:58Brinjitzu!
18:59Quicker they whack lanterns, more time they have to pick up numbers and work out some.
19:05When brainy's are happy with answer, hit gong!
19:09First two teams to provide correct answer get green belts and advance to next level.
19:15One brainy from losing team will be eliminated.
19:18The key to success here is for the guider to use the right side of their brain to follow their teammates' progress and give them clear instructions.
19:28For their partner, it's vital they use the left side of their brain to focus on these instructions and nothing else.
19:36First to put their communication training to the test are Dan Raj and Rhys.
19:43Take a step to the left.
19:44With guider Dan Raj working the right side of his brain and Rhys to the left, the boys get off to a good start.
19:50Take a step to the right.
19:52Whack.
19:53But then Rhys' radar goes awry.
19:55Take a step to the right.
19:57Right.
19:58Slightly back.
20:02Whack.
20:03And now the boys are losing valuable time.
20:06Whack.
20:08Whack.
20:10Brain jitsu.
20:11The pair finish in 1 minute 45 seconds, but they'll have to wait to find out how much extra time, if any, it's bought them to make their sum.
20:19OK, walk forward.
20:21Left.
20:22Right.
20:22Right.
20:23Right.
20:23Sorry.
20:24Now, whack.
20:26Good.
20:27Next, it's the pink team of Jack and Arjun.
20:29In training, Arjun took complete control of the guiding team, but now it's Jack who'll be giving the instructions.
20:35Whack.
20:35Yeah.
20:37Don't smack it.
20:38Whack it.
20:39And he's doing a pretty good job of it.
20:41With forceful Arjun silent for once, the boys make good progress.
20:44Left.
20:46Whack.
20:48Brain jitsu.
20:49Stopping the clock in a whack-tastic 1 minute 23 seconds.
20:57Forward.
20:58Last up are the two remaining girls, Hayley and Ella.
21:01Whack.
21:03OK, backwards a little bit.
21:06Right.
21:09Whack.
21:09With Ella doing the guiding, it looks like she's remembered her training, giving Hayley clear and precise instructions.
21:15Whack.
21:19Left.
21:21Whack.
21:22That's the last lantern, and it's a good time.
21:25Just 1 minute 35 seconds.
21:27The quickest to whack open all their lanterns is Jack and Arjun, who set off first to find their numbers.
21:36Here's what our brainies are looking for.
21:39See if you can work out the sum.
21:42Remember, the first two teams to work it out will go through to the next level.
21:52Jack and Arjun are first to bang the gong, just ahead of Reese and Dan Raj.
21:56But the girls' brains are struggling with the numbers.
21:59At last, they bang the gong.
22:0211 plus 20 minus 6 equals 25.
22:05That looks spot on.
22:07But to be safe, the girls will be hoping that one of the other teams have got their sum wrong.
22:1120 plus 11 minus 6 equals 25.
22:15That's a thumbs up from the Sheehan.
22:18And no problems either for Jack and Arjun.
22:20So, even though they've found the right answer, as the last to finish, it's Hayley and Ella, who'll be battling it out to avoid elimination in the...
22:30STAIR OFF!
22:33With just one green belt up for grabs, both brainies must use all their powers of focus to fight the urge to blink.
22:44The first to falter will be eliminated.
22:46Oh, and it's Hayley who's first to go from think to blink.
22:55So, while Ella stays in, Hayley's out and must hand over her orange brain belt and leave the dojo.
23:02WALK OF ETERNAL REGRET
23:09I thought the brain training was useful.
23:13I could visualise what I was doing in my head.
23:16It was just the sun that got me down.
23:21So, with four levels left, it's green brain belts for Ella, Danraj, Arjun, Reece and Jack.
23:28The fact that I've come first has built in my confidence much greater.
23:31The method that I used to keep my eyes open was to blink really fast before I did the...
23:38ZEROF.
23:40RAIN TITTER!
23:44LEVEL FOUR
23:46REVOLT!
23:48This fourth level requires our brainies to master a primitive part of the brain called the amygdala, the area that responds to threat.
23:57Ha ha! Oh, two!
23:59Remember the last time you felt afraid or panicky?
24:04Maybe it was on a dark night.
24:06Well, that feeling was triggered by the old amygdala.
24:10Stress can make you lose focus.
24:13Fact.
24:14Which is why my brainies must train to keep their emotions under control.
24:20Room of mental nourishment.
24:24Yeah!
24:24We're back in the room of mental nourishment and it's time for our five remaining green belt holders to overcome fear and stay totally focused.
24:37Brain training.
24:38Form a circle.
24:39Pass the disgusting drink around the circle.
24:42Only passing it on when you have said a different word relating to the last word someone says.
24:47After one minute, the brainy holding the drink has to drink it.
24:52Hey, but drink what exactly?
24:54Well, how about a nice glass of cod liver oil?
24:57I'm going to throw chunks out after that.
25:00Disgusting or not, Arjun, it's time to play.
25:03Water.
25:06Liquid.
25:06Liquid.
25:07Drink.
25:09Orange juice.
25:11While most of our brainies are doing a good job of keeping their amygdalas under control, with Arjun, it's a different story.
25:17Just the thought of that cod liver oil appears to be slowing him down.
25:21Ginger ale.
25:24Ginger.
25:27Chewy.
25:29Bubble gum.
25:31Bubble.
25:34Soap.
25:36Tub.
25:36There's the gong, and it's Rhys, who's found himself holding the cup of yuck.
25:44Just hold your nose and drink it.
25:47Just don't think about it.
25:48Just hold your nose and drink it.
25:50Hey, easy for you to say, Danraj.
25:52Yeah, I'll just sit there.
25:54Ooh, it's tense.
26:00You're going to let me faint.
26:01Time for a training tip.
26:04Tip.
26:05Welcome the drink as your friend.
26:07It holds the answer.
26:09That's a good tip.
26:11If you do this training at home, then imagining the drink as something nice, like a fruit smoothie, will help you stay calm.
26:17Being afraid of it will only cloud your focus and stop you from coming up with a word.
26:24Arjun kicks things off a second time.
26:26Toilet.
26:27Toilet.
26:28Toilet bowl.
26:30Toilet?
26:30The idea is to think of the drink as something nice.
26:33Something gross.
26:34Flush.
26:36Flush.
26:37Diary inside.
26:39Green.
26:40Chicken.
26:42Finally, our brainies change the subject and immediately things start to speed up.
26:46Fried chicken.
26:47Buffalo wings.
26:48Yum.
26:50Hot.
26:52Scrumptious.
26:52That's the second gong, and this time it's Dan Raj who has to gulp down the gloop.
27:00Block your nose, Dan Raj.
27:02Stop, you mean.
27:03Block your nose.
27:05Drink it down.
27:07Dan Raj.
27:08That was disgusting, but the tip did help me into drinking it.
27:17I found it harder to concentrate because of the element of fear, because the drink was passing around, and I was like, don't come to me, don't come to me.
27:26Will Reese manage to keep his concentration in the next task?
27:30And will Arjun remember his training and think nice thoughts?
27:34It's time to find out as our five are challenged to overcome their fears once again.
27:41Creepy Crawly Word Grab.
27:43This level real test of mind over matter for brainies, and will push them to really overcome their fear.
27:50Underneath the creepy crawlies lie an assortment of letters worth different points.
27:55Brainies have just one minute to plunge hands into tank and pick out up to seven letters each.
28:00They then have a further minute to make higher scoring words they can.
28:07To do well, my brainies must block out the signals coming from their amygdala and ignore the creepy crawlies.
28:14The quicker they combat their fear, the more time they'll have to pick out the high scoring letters.
28:19Underneath this pile of mealworms are an extra five golden letters.
28:32If our brainies manage to use one in their word, they'll double their score.
28:41Our brainies dive in.
28:42But what's this?
28:43Instead of looking for letters, frontrunner Jack is waving his hands about in the air,
28:47completely forgetting his training.
28:52That can't be said of Ella, though.
28:54Her face, that of someone whose amygdala is well and truly under control.
28:59But forceful Arjun's only picked out three letters so far.
29:03Remember, Arjun, think nice thoughts.
29:05Move it.
29:07I'm still...
29:08When the minute's up, our brainies now have a further minute to make the highest scoring word they can from their letters.
29:15With just three letters to choose from, frontrunner Jack is finding his options somewhat limited.
29:20But not Ella.
29:22If she just moves that S to the end, she'll have a great word.
29:25See if you can make a word from the anagram at the bottom of the screen now.
29:40There's the last gong.
29:41How have our green belt holders fared?
29:46Sheet.
29:47Unbelievable.
29:49Ella never did find that word, and no word means no point.
29:54Gone.
29:55But that's five points for Dan, Raj.
30:01Joel.
30:02No points for Arjun, either.
30:06Hole.
30:08Top hole, more like, because that's six points for Rhys.
30:12Two.
30:13While Jack earns two for two.
30:17So, with both Arjun and Ella tied on zero, we've got ourselves a tie-break.
30:22Our two brainies will get one chance to prove the power of their mind and save themselves.
30:27It all hangs on the...
30:29Tie-break chopstick challenge!
30:31Oh, it's tough but fair.
30:36Our brainies must use their occipital lobes, the seeing part of the brain, and work out how many chopsticks they see.
30:42They've got just five seconds to write down their answers.
30:45If they lose focus and panic, it'll all be over.
30:48Time to reveal our brainies' answers.
30:50Fifty-eight for Arjun.
30:56And thirty for Ella.
30:58The actual number is 64, so Arjun's answer of 58 is the closest of the two, meaning that it's Ella who must now leave the dojo.
31:09The walk of eternal regret.
31:20I went for sheet because I thought it was a longer word than the others you could have picked, but then after I'd done it, I thought it was a bit risky and I shouldn't have chose to make that move.
31:31I'm kind of sad to be out of brain jitsu because I was hoping to get it to at least red belt.
31:39So with only three levels left, those who use their minds to master the mealworms are rewarded with their blue belts.
31:47When I was in the tie-break of Ella, I was like, oh, so terrified because she beat Hayley.
31:54But when she hadn't showed me 64, I just felt like screaming so loud.
31:58The training really helped me, especially the tip, because it made me forget about all the maggots and just focused on getting the words out.
32:07I knew that they couldn't harm me, so I was just really calmed down and I was just trying to focus on getting the right word and trying to win.
32:15And luckily I did it.
32:18Brain jitsu!
32:22Brainy, not so brainy.
32:24Who's the clever clogs and whose brain needs a lot more training?
32:29Doctors! I love them if you feel ill.
32:31All you have to do is go and see them and they'll help you get better.
32:34No wonder! They spend around seven years at medical school and then up to four years training.
32:39Enough respect. Stethoscope-tastic!
32:41Right, it's doctors again, but this time of the 17th century.
32:45This load of quacks believe that our personalities came from one of four types of fluids flowing through our bodies.
32:51What a load of nutters.
32:53Ooh, don't mind if I do.
32:55Brainy, modern doctors. Not so brainy. 17th century quacks.
33:01Brain jitsu!
33:05Tension in brain jitsu dojo mounting.
33:08Now just four young hopeful remain to compete under watchful eye of Shihan.
33:12I really want to win the black belt because it will give me, like, more dignity and give me more self-confidence.
33:23Front runner Jack!
33:25Forceful Arjun, talker of group.
33:28I just feel like screaming so loud.
33:30And Dan Raj, never out of top three.
33:33Ugh! I'm nasty!
33:36Boney too, Brainy, will make final test.
33:38Table of supreme focus.
33:40Where must move ball with power of mind?
33:44Brain jitsu black brain belt is within their grasp.
33:47It's time for...
33:49Level five.
33:51Red belt!
33:52Now, if you've just taken up competitive bog snorkelling, then you might be interested to know that your new hobby is doing wonders for the old grey matter.
34:04Exercising both the thinking part of the brain, the cerebrum, and the doing part, the cerebellum.
34:11You see, doing new things increases the flow of blood into your head, which keeps your brain cells topped up with the oxygen they need to perform at their best.
34:20So, in level five, my brainy's are going to be challenged to learn new skills.
34:26Now, you can speed up how quickly the brain takes in new stuff.
34:31And this is what our brainy's are going to train for now.
34:35Room of Mental Nourishment.
34:39It's our brainy's fourth visit to the Room of Mental Nourishment, where they'll be training their brains in how to learn new skills.
34:45Flip and catch as many drink coasters as you can.
34:52OK.
34:54Rhys starts the ball rolling.
34:56I'll show you how to do this.
34:58Yeah, sure.
34:58Not bad at all.
35:01Ooh!
35:02Nice tackle!
35:03Oh, my days!
35:05It's been attacked.
35:06The cookies have been attacked.
35:07I'm welcome.
35:09Dan Raj has also made a decent start.
35:13Cookie!
35:13But not everyone's having quite as much success.
35:16Yes, it's been great!
35:18Ow!
35:20Run-runner Jack is finding this particular skill harder to crack than a Japanese crossword.
35:26Oi, time for a training tip.
35:29Tip.
35:30Approach this positively.
35:33Laugh out loud for 30 seconds.
35:37It might seem weird, but the next time you face a mental challenge, you try lapping as well.
35:41Not only can it help with confidence, but it also increases our heart rate, which sends
35:47extra oxygen into the brain, helping it to perform at its best.
35:52Jack, though, has decided there's more than one way to increase his heart rate.
35:56We've got a heart!
35:58Look at that!
36:00All of them!
36:01Oh, dear.
36:02There's positive, and there's positively daft.
36:05That was the worst one I've ever got.
36:07That's right, son.
36:08You have a lie down.
36:10Yeah!
36:11Do you know the tip?
36:12Well, it helped me by, like, making me more cheerful, so my brain was, like, more in gear.
36:18And so that's why I was so hysterical and demented, basically.
36:23I think fooling around ain't going to help you pass the next task.
36:26No way.
36:28No, they're going to lose anyway.
36:30So, will reliable Reese be able to recall his training when the heat is on?
36:34And will frontrunner Jack regret fooling around?
36:38Only time will tell as our four now put their latest brain training to the test.
36:45Chop! Chop!
36:46Don't drop!
36:46To win Red Brain Belt, brainies must remain mentally confident as they learn new physical skill.
36:54Remaining four must keep ball in airflow and guide it along obstacle course, through hoops and into basket.
37:02It is race against clock, but brainies must remain confident.
37:05There is five-second penalty every time ball drops.
37:09Brainy with slowest time will be eliminated.
37:11The tip for my brainies in this next task is to remain calm and think positive thoughts.
37:20Giving in to frustration will only lessen their focus and slow them up.
37:28So, can our brainies stay positive or will they let the pressure get to them?
37:34First to go with the floor is Dan Raj, who straight away looks as smooth as a sumo's backside.
37:41Slickly through the slalom, it's clear that Dan Raj has got both the thinking part and the doing part of his brain working well.
37:51A slam dunk at the end and that's a great effort.
37:57Next up is forceful Arjun, but immediately he runs into trouble.
38:04And unable to force the ball to do what he wants, Arjun is forgetting to stay positive.
38:09His confidence in Tatters, Arjun's round, goes from bad to worse.
38:31It's now the turn of reliable Reese.
38:34While moving along at a good pace, it's not the cleanest of rounds.
38:43But then Reese's confidence picks up.
38:48That's good through the slalom.
38:51And a basket and one stops the clock.
38:53Finally, it's Jack's turn.
38:58Is he about to pay the price for fooling about in training?
39:02It's not the best of starts.
39:06And what's more, he never really gets going.
39:09A bit of bother with the basket.
39:17Come on!
39:21And Jack eventually stops the clock.
39:30So, which brainy flowed too slow?
39:32With no time penalties, Dan Raj got round in an impressive 57 seconds.
39:42With 17 penalties, forceful Arjun crawled round in 3 minutes 44.
39:50With five time penalties to add on, reliable Reese completed the course in 1 minute 2 seconds.
39:55And racking up 11 penalties, Jack finished in 2 minutes dead.
40:04Which means that it's forceful Arjun who's eliminated and must now leave the dojo.
40:09Walk of eternal regret.
40:20I feel so disappointed to be out of brain jitsu because I think I was going to get the brown belt.
40:25But I didn't.
40:26The brain training helped me but it wasn't enough to make me win.
40:34So, with just two levels left, that leaves Dan Raj, Reese and Jack to stand proud in red.
40:40I'm feeling very confident because in all the tasks I've done, I've done quite well.
40:47And I think I'll be able to get the black belt.
40:50I'm really pleased that I actually got through.
40:52I never even thought that I'd get this far.
40:54I'm here now.
40:55So, that's a big relief because this is something that's a big step for me.
41:01And I think that I've done really well.
41:06Brain jitsu.
41:07It's this level which will decide which two of my remaining braineys will go on to battle it out for the black belt.
41:20Now, imagine you're in your school play.
41:24As well as lines to remember and moving around on stage, there's also the audience watching you.
41:30It's remembering stuff under pressure like this that level six is all about.
41:35It centres around three areas of the brain.
41:40The seeing part, the occipital lobes, the memory part, the temporal lobes and the movement part, the cerebellum.
41:49To the max.
41:51Room of mental nourishment.
41:53Our three surviving braineys are back in the room of mental nourishment.
41:59This time, for a bit of memory training.
42:03Brain training.
42:05Memorise the sequence of the colours.
42:08Oh, that's hard.
42:09Indeed it is, Dan Raj.
42:11No, wait.
42:11Why don't we do a table each?
42:14Okay.
42:14I do this one.
42:15That, on the other hand, is not so hard.
42:17And finding ways to make training easier isn't really the name of the game.
42:21If you read them all out loud, we'll get mixed up and start thinking of your combination.
42:25Sorry.
42:26You might, but then you'll have only got four colours to remember, Jack.
42:29Who thinks they can remember all of them?
42:31Me.
42:32I think I might.
42:32That's more like it.
42:34Some proper training.
42:36So, purple, green, orange, red.
42:38Blue, grey, green, purple, red.
42:42Now you're looking through that.
42:44Yeah, right.
42:45Time for a training tip.
42:46That way, no one will need to peek.
42:51Tip.
42:52Create a song linking the colours together.
42:55How about we just do, like, purple, purple, red, red, green, green, green, grey, blue, orange,
43:02Oh, dear.
43:02Looks like our brain isn't finding another show.
43:04Cut.
43:05No, just go purple, purple, blue, orange, red, red, yellow, green, green, green, orange.
43:09How about that song?
43:10You need to put some majesticness, whatever that means, in it.
43:12Purple, purple, purple, blue.
43:15No, like, think of a word, like, pee, like, pee for poo.
43:20Memory training isn't just great for the brain, it's also incredibly useful.
43:25Try turning your school timetable into a song and see if you can remember every class.
43:29We've mixed them up.
43:30How is it supposed to make sense now?
43:33Not that our brains are showing any signs of singing whatsoever.
43:36I'm not going to do a song because it's humiliating.
43:39Can't I just do it in my own way?
43:40I'm just going to say the one.
43:41Silver, orange, purple, purple, green, green, green, red, silver, green, yellow, green, yellow, green, green, green, green, green, green, no, yellow, no, sorry, grey, yellow.
44:08No, no, he swapped them.
44:11Oi!
44:12I remember yellow being it then.
44:14You know, I've seen more focus looking through a pair of old milk bottles.
44:18I did do pretty well.
44:20Don't you think that Rhys was the worst at this memory game?
44:23I only actually had two goes.
44:25I went once across and then I had my go and then I went once across and then I had my go.
44:29Hang on, hang on.
44:30I had one and I still got it.
44:31That means I'm the best.
44:32Yeah, but you...
44:34No, but I'm the best.
44:35End of story.
44:36Will Dan Raj prove to be the pick of the bunch?
44:40And will Jack pay a heavy price for not singing?
44:43Only time will tell as our final three put their memory training to the test for one of two brown brain belts and a place on the table of supreme focus.
44:53Super Memory Dizzy Dash
44:56Each brainie is spun around on Dizzy Wheel a total of ten times.
45:02Their task to use all their power of focus to memorize five images in front of them.
45:08Then race against clock to cross balancing beam and collect same five images from ten hanging above them.
45:18Then must arrange images in reverse order.
45:21When they are happy with their selection, a hit of gong stops clock.
45:31My tip for the brainies is to keep focused on the main objective and use their training to link the five images together.
45:39So, our final three brave the Dizzy Wheel to compete for their brown brain belt and a place on the table of supreme focus.
45:48Time to spin.
45:49Will their memory training help them to remember the images and ignore the effects of being spun round like worms on a waltzer?
45:59The order they need to remember is at the bottom of the screen.
46:07First to wobble off in search of those images is Dan Raj.
46:10And straight away he appears to be struggling with his memory, plucking out an apple instead of the tomato he needs.
46:20This really is the ultimate test of memory for our brainies, as they fight their dizziness to pick out the five images they saw on the wheel, arranging them in reverse order.
46:28For every mistake they'll pick up a five-second penalty, the brainy with the slowest time will be eliminated.
46:38While Dan Raj now has his five pictures, he's wasting valuable time going backwards and forwards for each one.
46:44And that's a patchy performance from Dan Raj.
46:52Next up is reliable Reece, who's repeating the pictures out loud to help him remember them.
47:10That's the five images. Now all Reece has to do is put them in the right order.
47:14Oh-ho, five out of five.
47:22Last to go is front-runner Jack, the brainy who found his training so humiliating.
47:28In next to no time, Jack plucks down those five images.
47:40But apart from that spider, none of the other pictures look to be in the right order.
47:44Is he about to pay the ultimate price for not trying harder in the training?
47:49Let's find out.
47:51With three penalties to add to his time of 1 minute 22, Dan Raj finished in 1 minute 37 seconds.
47:57With no penalties, reliable Reece rang his gong in a rapid 1 minute 19 seconds.
48:06And even though front-runner Jack racked up four penalties, he still finished in 1 minute 22.
48:12Meaning that Jack's still in and Dan Raj is out.
48:19For Dan Raj, it's time to hand over his brain belt and leave the dojo.
48:24Walk of eternal regret.
48:31I am quite forgetful.
48:34I just hate doing stuff like that.
48:37The brain training did help in a way.
48:40But I also tried my hardest.
48:43But obviously I couldn't get to the finals.
48:47So with only one level to go, that just leaves reliable Reece and front-runner Jack to don their brown brain belts
48:59and prepare for the final showdown.
49:01I am so happy.
49:02I've never been so happy in my whole entire life.
49:05I'm so happy.
49:06I'm in the finals and I'm going to win.
49:09I'm really, really hoping, fingers crossed, that I will win.
49:14I really, really want that black belt on my head.
49:18Brain Jitsu.
49:21Eight young hopeful arrived at Brain Training Dojo to fight for Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt.
49:27As challenges got tougher, trainees got fewer.
49:30Some lacked focus.
49:33Others speed.
49:35Now just two remain.
49:36Reliable Reece.
49:39Winner of two levels so far.
49:41This is something that's a big step for me and I think that I've done really well.
49:46And front-runner Jack.
49:48Confident throughout.
49:49I'm in the finals and I'm going to win.
49:52But who will use Brain Training to max to win final challenge?
49:58Level seven.
49:59Black Belt.
50:01So, this is it.
50:03Between my two remaining braineys and the black belt stands Brain Jitsu's ultimate challenge.
50:10A mental duel that is head-to-head in every sense.
50:15The battlefield?
50:16A table.
50:17But not just any table.
50:19For this, my friends, is the table of supreme focus.
50:23Where our two braineys will attempt to move a ball across the table using only the power of their mind.
50:30By getting this far, they've already demonstrated mental control under many different types of pressure.
50:37But now, they must learn to focus their minds by entering a state of total calm.
50:43To prepare them, my two finalists will need to get into the zone.
50:47Room of Mental Nourishment.
50:52Yeah!
50:53In this, their final visit to the Room of Mental Nourishment, our two remaining braineys are about to train in how to stay focused, no matter what's happening around them.
51:05Brain training.
51:07Mentally prepare yourself for the final task.
51:10Don't let sounds put you off.
51:11So, our two finalists must block out the noise and concentrate only on keeping their focus.
51:20While Rhys is blocking out the noise by focusing on a single point, Jack has buried himself under a pillow.
51:30But even that doesn't seem to be working.
51:33Jack, stop laughing, you're putting me off.
51:35But isn't that one of the points?
51:37Time for a training tip.
51:39Tip.
51:42Visualise and focus on somewhere you feel happy and calm.
51:48While Jack's focus is certainly better this time, it doesn't last long.
51:52Will Jack get into the zone in time for his toughest challenge yet?
52:07Or will it be reliable Rhys who grabs the glory?
52:10Let's find out.
52:11Table of Supreme Focus.
52:19Rules are simple.
52:20Each brainey must push ball to their opponent's end of table using only power of mind.
52:27Sensors in braineys' headbands measure brainwaves.
52:30This is converted into electrical signal which moves ball.
52:34More focused mind, stronger signal, and faster ball will travel.
52:38See how braineys are doing on this readout.
52:43Two lines represent each player's brainwaves.
52:46Lower the line, more concentrated their mind.
52:48To make sure this is the test of all tests, our braineys must win the best of three rounds.
53:03So, this is the big one.
53:05Our two finalists must use all their brain training to enter their zone of absolute focus.
53:12This is the reason they came to the dojo.
53:14This is the moment they've been training for.
53:24It's Jack who's first to get the ball moving.
53:27His lower black line on the readout, a clear sign of his better focus.
53:30Barely able to keep a smile off his face, Jack makes it 1-0.
53:45And reliable Reece will have to call on all his training if he's not to be eliminated.
53:50Round two.
54:02And again, the low black line on the readout is showing that it's Jack who's really found his focus.
54:08But Reece is refusing to back down and stops the ball in its tracks.
54:12And as Jack begins to fidget, Reece takes full advantage.
54:22Leveling the score at one apiece.
54:28Oh, it's all down to the final round.
54:31This is now a test of mental endurance as much as anything else.
54:34Who will cope best with the brain strain?
54:36Round three, and both our brainies are fully focused.
54:47You can see from the two lines on the readout just how evenly matched they are.
54:54But little by little, Jack starts to make headway, inching that ball back towards Reece.
54:59It's all over, and it's Jack who's emerged triumphant.
55:12His training really has paid off.
55:14Frontrunner Jack truly has proven himself to be a master of the mind
55:17and worthy winner of the Brain Jitsu Black Belt.
55:22Makes me feel so great to have won this.
55:26I thought I didn't think I was going to do it.
55:28I thought I was going to be knocked out early into the game.
55:32I just feel like jumping.
55:34But glory for one brings disappointment for another.
55:37And although he fought valiantly, Reece must now leave the dojo.
55:43Walk of eternal regret.
55:46I think it went wrong because every time I saw the ball on my side,
55:53I was so stressed.
55:54And I was trying and trying, and I was just looking at the ball,
55:56and suddenly it just went the other way.
55:58And I was like, no, not good.
55:59I've been so depressed.
56:01I've never felt so depressed in my life.
56:03I'm going to go home and meditate for the rest of my life.
56:05I feel great that I won.
56:12I think all the tips that help me focus and everything else really helps in the game,
56:19and I think it will help in real life.
56:20For Jack, his journey to mental mastery is now complete.
56:24Up against the toughest of competitors in reliable Reece, he refused to back down.
56:29And when the pressure was really on, it was Jack who was able to call on all his training
56:34and grab that black brain belt.
56:43Our journey has come to an end.
56:47Another brainy has proven themselves worthy to wear the brain jitsu black belt.
56:51But while brain jitsu might represent the most extreme form of brain training,
56:57its philosophy can be shared by all.
57:01Each and every one of you has it in your power to grow your mind.
57:06All it takes is dedication and practice.
