00:00Well, it's pretty chilly out there at the moment, but things are set to turn even colder as we go through this week and into the new year with some snow likely across northern parts in particular.
00:10But at the moment, we do actually have a cold front sliding its way southwestwards as we head into Tuesday.
00:16And often fronts mark where there's a fair amount of rain, but that's not the case in this instance.
00:21There's not really any rain along this front, really.
00:24It's marking just the boundary with that colder air coming in from the northeast.
00:27So it is going to be largely dry as we go into Tuesday, not totally dry.
00:32There are a few showers for some eastern coastal parts of England, maybe a few showers towards some southern southwestern parts as well.
00:39But most places, like I say, having a fine day and plenty of sunshine.
00:43That's because that cold front as well as that cold air is what clearer air behind it.
00:48And so we're seeing a lot of that cloud clearing away, breaking up compared to Monday.
00:51So more sunshine on offer for most of us.
00:54With that colder air, though, temperatures, if anything, will be down a couple of degrees compared to the first day of the week.
01:00As a result, we're looking at them peaking low single figures across many northern parts, mid single figures across central areas, perhaps some places getting to high single figures across some parts of the south.
01:11But worth factoring in a brisk breeze across eastern, perhaps southeastern parts as well.
01:15So that will add to the chilly feel despite the often sunny skies.
01:19As we go through Tuesday night and into Wednesday, still firmly under the influence of high pressure towards the northwest of us.
01:26So a lot of calm weather for most and a lot of clear skies.
01:30And as a result, as you might expect, temperatures are going to plummet.
01:34So a cold, frosty start to the day for many of us on New Year's Eve.
01:38Temperatures in some prone rural spots could get to minus six, minus seven, minus eight Celsius, that kind of thing.
01:44So a harsh frost in some rural spots. But nonetheless, for many, it is going to be cold.
01:49It is going to be frosty. In the southeast, perhaps a bit of cloud, maybe some fog developing here.
01:55And if that does so, then temperatures not dropping quite as low as across other places.
02:00So less likely to see frost here.
02:03But as we go through New Year's Eve then, again, a lot of fine sunny weather around.
02:08A crisp feel to things. It is going to be chilly, that's for sure, despite the fact that there'll be plenty of sunshine.
02:14Staying generally fine across central and southern parts as we go through the afternoon towards the evening.
02:20A different story, though, across parts of Scotland.
02:22Cloud building and some showery outbreaks, initially of rain pushing their way in.
02:28Now, as we go through New Year's Eve through the evening, there's actually a front that's gradually going to edge its way southwards.
02:35And notice the tighter packed isobars indicating that the winds are going to be picking up as well.
02:41So it is going to start to turn blustery across northern parts as we head through Hogmanay, head through New Year's Eve and towards midnight.
02:49Across Scotland, really, it is going to turn quite unsettled.
02:52Outbreaks of showery, mostly rain pushing their way in, but some of them starting to turn a bit wintry, particularly across the northern isles.
03:00Further south, though, like I say, staying dry, lots of calm weather still as we head towards midnight here.
03:06So a very different story, a tell of two halves across the country as we go through New Year's Eve and into New Year's Day.
03:13Cold and frosty then across southern parts with the calmer weather here.
03:16Temperatures not dropping as low further north.
03:19But there is the chance of some winteriness, some sleet, some snow over higher ground.
03:24Then as we go through New Year's Day itself, the snow risk actually increases.
03:29We're going to see plenty of showers piling their way down from the north on brisk northerly winds.
03:35And with those snow showers, they're going to lead to some lying snow building up across some parts of Scotland in particular.
03:42We do have a warning out for snow and ice across the northern half of Scotland through Thursday, through New Year's Day.
03:48And into Friday, that's because we could see 10 to 20 centimetres above 200 metres or so,
03:54and perhaps up to 30 centimetres of lying snow over the highest roots.
03:59If we get these plentiful showers coming down on that brisk northerly wind through New Year's Day itself,
04:05there will be some dry, bright weather around, but also a few outbreaks of rain feeding their way southwards.
04:10But it's always in areas exposed to that northerly wind where we're going to see those showers most frequent.
04:16Temperatures for some on New Year's Day may be a degree or so higher compared to New Year's Eve,
04:21but there's still that chilly feel to things and those strong winds towards the north really strengthening as well.
04:27Then as we go into New Year's second day, into Friday, we are going to see that front that pushes through through New Year's Day,
04:34clearing away towards the south.
04:36And then we really just end up in this brisk northerly flow.
04:39So it's, yes, areas exposed to that northerly flow where we're going to continue to see those showers.
04:45And it's why we're going to see those snow levels building up across some parts of northern Scotland in particular,
04:51because of those snow showers pushing that way in.
04:54We're likely to see also a few showers across some parts of Northern Ireland,
04:58maybe down western parts of Wales, southwest England could see a few showers pushing in,
05:03maybe a Pembrokeshire dangler developing as well.
05:06And also down eastern parts could be a few showers.
05:08But the further south you are, the less chance you are of seeing any sleet or snow.
05:12It's not out of the question, but it's definitely more likely across northern parts of Scotland.
05:17Cold air plunging down across the country means temperatures on Friday likely to be a degree or so lower than on Thursday.
05:24So a real cold feel to things, especially in areas where you're exposed to some brisk winds.
05:29If we look at the winds now, just running through Thursday and Friday, strong winds.
05:34We're talking northerly gales and exposed spots of northern and eastern Scotland.
05:38Some strong winds down the North Sea coastal parts as well of England as we go through the first couple of days of 2026.
05:45And so that's going to add to that cold feel to things.
05:47It's going to feel pretty raw, even if you don't see any of that snow.
05:51But what do we have as we go through this coming weekend?
05:54Well, the cold weather sticks with us.
05:56If anything, it's going to be even colder, meaning we're going to see some widespread harsh frost across many places.
06:03The risk of snow showers actually continues mainly in the north.
06:06But we can't rule out a little bit of snow pushing further south, particularly if we see a front making its way southwards.
06:12Well, that could bring some sleet or snow across more central southern parts of the UK.
06:15But that's one to keep an eye out for at the moment, because for the time being,
06:20we're a little bit more firmed up with the details as to what we can expect through New Year's Day and through Friday,
06:26when we do already, like I say, have a warning out.
06:29Whatever you're up to for New Year's Eve, I do hope you have a great one.
06:32And I'll see you again soon. Bye bye.
06:33Bye bye.
