This is the Met Office UK Weather forecast for the week ahead 01/12/2025. After an extremely wet start to the week, the next few days will be somewhat drier. But blustery and thundery showers will still bring an unsettled week to many . Bringing you this week’s weather forecast is Annie Shuttleworth
00:00Hello, it's certainly been a wet start to meteorological winter and although there's more rain to come this week, we've definitely had the worst of it already.
00:09We've got a powerful jet stream throughout this week that's going to be driving areas of low pressure down to the northwest of the UK.
00:17Now what's driving that powerful jet stream? Well, it's the strong temperature contrast across the northern parts of America.
00:24We've got very cold air driving that jet stream and that will bring some uncertainties to the forecast later on this week.
00:31But for now, it's just going to bring a pretty unsettled few days.
00:34As I said, we've definitely had the worst of it, so it's going to be more showery than persistent rain throughout Tuesday and Wednesday.
00:42Showers most frequent across western areas, particularly across parts of western Wales, southern England as well.
00:48Some of these showers could bring a risk of hail and thunder.
00:51So we'll also see some very heavy showers across northwestern areas of Scotland where there'll be pretty brisk winds too, risk of gale force winds here.
00:59The temperatures tomorrow will be a degree or so lower than Monday, but with more in the way of sunshine across eastern areas and somewhat lighter winds here, it will feel a little bit more pleasant.
01:09But if you're underneath these persistent showers across the south and west, you're definitely not going to be feeling the benefit of those double digits.
01:15Into Tuesday, we hold on to that area of low pressure.
01:19We don't have as much of a feature moving through though, so we won't see as many showers and there will be more in the way of sunshine between any showers.
01:28And clearer skies overnight on Tuesday mean it will be a chillier start on Wednesday.
01:33A touch of frost rurally under the clearer skies across north and eastern areas.
01:38Otherwise, further west, another damp start.
01:41It's particularly across western areas of Scotland through Wednesday where we'll see the most frequent showers.
01:45Again, quite strong winds as well.
01:47And some of these showers could turn to snow as they move inland towards the Grampians, for example.
01:52Still some showers across western areas of Wales, southwestern England.
01:56But for most of us, we should get away with a relatively dry day.
02:01But cloud will thicken as the day goes on ahead of this next front, bringing more persistent rain into Thursday.
02:09And as there will be more sunshine, more dry weather, it will feel a little bit warmer.
02:13But still, we'll be down in single figures for many north and east areas.
02:16That's around average for the time of year.
02:19Into Thursday, as I said, we've got the next front moving through.
02:22There is some uncertainty with this front because we may see a bit of a wave develop to the south of it,
02:27which could mean the rain lingers across southeastern areas through Thursday morning.
02:31So potentially a bit of a damp start here.
02:33Rain feeding into northern areas of Scotland through much of the day.
02:37And again, behind it, a drier slot, but then more showers to come on Thursday.
02:42I think they'll be quite frequent on Thursday once again after a slightly drier spell on Wednesday.
02:48Plenty of cloud around to temperatures around 9 or 10 degrees.
02:50That's about average for this time of year.
02:53Now, further north across northern Ireland, northern areas of England, it will probably be a bit of a drier day,
02:58but probably a chillier start as well.
03:01So temperatures around 6 or 7 degrees here through Thursday.
03:05So through the week from Tuesday to Thursday, we will see a number of showers, particularly across western areas.
03:10These are the rainfall totals and how they tot up through the week.
03:13And you can see they do slowly build up.
03:15Most areas will see at least some rain through the rest of this week.
03:19But it's particularly across the west where we will see the highest totals.
03:23And although one day won't bring any exceptional rainfall alone, because we do have very saturated ground and the heavy rainfall from Monday,
03:31we could see some further travel disruption and flooding at shorter notice.
03:35So do stay tuned to our warnings throughout this week.
03:39Now, things do get a little bit more complicated as we head towards Friday.
03:43There's a degree of uncertainty in the forecast.
03:47We're expecting this area of low pressure to drive a weather front by Friday evening.
03:51But before then, what happens to this low pressure ahead of it is yet to play for.
03:56Now, you can see here two different model runs.
03:59We've got ECMWF, the European model run, and the Met Office model run on the top here.
04:05And you can see the Met Office model run wants to allow this area of low pressure to mix in with the deeper area of low pressure in the Atlantic,
04:12creating a shallower area of low pressure by Saturday.
04:15Whereas the ECMWF model, the European long-range forecast model,
04:20wants to continue to keep this deep area of low pressure out to the north and west of the UK.
04:25So there's a big difference, actually, by Saturday morning between the two model runs.
04:30And actually, here at the Met Office, at this stage, we are preferring something like this,
04:35with a deeper area of low pressure out to the north and west by the end of Friday.
04:41So that means on Friday itself, it will likely be fairly dry, potentially a few showers across southeastern areas,
04:47and probably a colder start, the coldest start to the week so far,
04:51with a risk of some fairly widespread fog first thing.
04:55But some dry weather around.
04:57As I said, the next front, with that deep area of low pressure, is on the way for Saturday.
05:01So there's a risk of some further heavy spells of rain throughout this weekend.
05:05It's unfortunately staying unsettled, wet, and windy.
05:09But with temperatures at average, or just above, frost will be limited.
05:14And we'll be keeping a close eye on how Friday plays out throughout this week here at the Met Office.
