00:00The problems remain.
00:01They're going to have to address some things here.
00:03Yes.
00:03There's no question.
00:04They still can't run the ball, still can't rush the passer.
00:06McCaffrey, 22 carries for 57?
00:09I mean...
00:10That's not going to get it done.
00:11Last night was like a couple that's having problems,
00:15but they got together for a great date night,
00:20and it went well, and nobody fought.
00:23And for that night, they connected like hell.
00:26But you're going to have to wake up tomorrow and work on your problems.
00:29Right.
00:29Still going to have to do that.
00:31That's how I see last night.
00:32That's actually a great analogy,
00:34because the problems that this marriage has is
00:38you give the ball to your best player,
00:41and he doesn't get to go anywhere.
00:43And it's because you're not able to block it up,
00:45and you're not able to get him loose in the run game.
00:49The pass game is pretty damn good.
00:51McCaffrey and Tongis and Bourne,
00:55and Demarcus Robinson had a couple of great catches
00:58and also a huge block in overtime, and so...
01:00I like him.
01:01Yeah, I really like him.
01:02I like him more than I was expecting to.
01:04And, you know, the other things that they need to fix,
01:07and we'll go to the phones.
01:08I know we've got a ton of people looking to talk,
01:10but how many times did Shanahan, like, have to call timeout
01:13because guys are not in the right spot?
01:16Because they're all so new.
01:17They don't know the playbook yet.
01:18What a night.
01:19What a night.
01:19Let's go to Ahmad on 680.
01:22Hi, Ahmad.
01:23Thanks for calling.
01:25Hey, guys.
01:26How are you doing?
01:27Although I'm not at 680, so I'm picking up my kids,
01:30so you may see some background noise.
01:31Okay.
01:32Oh, man.
01:32What a game.
01:35Sorry.
01:35Go ahead.
01:35No, love it.
01:36Love it.
01:36It's all good if we've got a little background noise.
01:38Put your kids on.
01:39Let them scream about it, too.
01:40Yeah, they're about to enter the car.
01:45Go ahead.
01:46No, but my first thought was gratefulness for the fact that I actually
01:52let them watch the last two minutes of the game.
01:54I was so on edge, and they were watching through the stairwell.
01:57You guys got to get away from me.
01:59I'm too emotional about this.
02:01But then finally caved in and watched the last two minutes,
02:03and it made for a great memory because we had a great time celebrating the win.
02:09Love it.
02:09So that's my first thought.
02:11But I wanted to kind of do two quick comments and then ask you guys a question.
02:16So the first comment, Shanahan, people should stop questioning.
02:21He's a genius.
02:21The fact that you go and win with all those backups and the way you've teamed it up.
02:27Everybody makes mistakes.
02:30Imagine that you are being judged by thousands of people every step of the way
02:36in your job.
02:37So, like, of course, he's going to make mistakes,
02:39but ultimately he pulled it through an amazing coaching job.
02:42That's the first comment.
02:43The second comment is around we have to really stop this whole Mac-Brock thing.
02:47Like, you can't please everybody.
02:49What do we want to do?
02:50Like, last year we didn't have a Brock backup,
02:52and everybody's disappointed and can't believe Brock's out because we know we're going to lose,
02:57and you're not a happy fan.
02:58And then now we actually have a great backup.
03:00Mac is playing out of his mind, and we should be happy.
03:03We have a great backup.
03:04But Brock, he's done it.
03:06He's taken us to two NFC Championship games and the Super Bowl.
03:10You know, he's our unquestioned leader.
03:11When he's good to go, he's good to go.
03:12And we should be thankful we've got a great backup in Mac.
03:15Now, the question for you guys is, I have, you know, two big things that make me kind of squirm.
03:21Number one is the whole line.
03:22It feels like it's going to get all our quarterbacks and running backs killed.
03:26Like, it seems like nobody's playing well, even Trent.
03:28And then the second is around Marquis Siegel, who he had a great play to end the game,
03:33but it seems like teams are targeting him.
03:35And he was targeted, obviously, with, I think it was a 2-2 at low one,
03:38and some other ones throughout the game.
03:39So, it seems like teams are catching on.
03:41He may be a great player moving forward, but right now it seems he might be a liability.
03:47So, just wanted to get your thoughts on those two things.
03:48Absolutely.
03:49Okay, thanks for the call.
03:50I think those are some great observations.
03:52And they give us a lot to chew on there.
03:55As far as the offensive line, I actually thought last night,
03:57look, the run-blocking thing, there's no holes, blah, blah, blah.
04:00We've got to figure that out.
04:02They're going against a really good D-line last night.
04:04I'll take the effort that I got from the offensive line,
04:08considering all things going into last night.
04:11I thought they kept Mack Jones upright pretty nicely.
04:15I know that they, was it one sack?
04:17I know he got hit.
04:18One sack.
04:18Yeah, he got hit a few times.
04:20I mean, that's going to happen.
04:21It's a great defensive line, and you dropped back 49 times.
04:24And you don't have a very elusive mobile quarterback.
04:26Right.
04:27Even when healthy.
04:28Correct.
04:28He's got a bum leg, and he's not mobile anyway, so he's going to get hit.
04:32Yeah, so I'll take that effort.
04:34As far as the safety play, I think it's a good observation.
04:37They are getting picked on a little bit back there.
04:39It's not just Siegel.
04:41It's Pinnock as well.
04:43They're getting picked on a little bit.
04:45But you want Siegel as a rookie.
04:47He's going to get better quickly.
04:48Again, this is another one of those spots that I think can be a lot better
04:52in the second half of the year than the first half, because Siegel is a rookie.
04:56You want that to keep developing.
04:57And don't forget the name Malik Mustafa.
05:00You know, they loved him last year, and he's getting close.
05:04From what I'm told, that practice window could open up as early as next week.
05:08I don't know what the ramp-up will be to get him back,
05:11but I do, in my head, imagine that the second half of the season,
05:16I hope Mustafa's out there as one of the safeties,
05:18and that'll change that group.
05:19Yeah, and we'll get into Grandy's grades in the 5 o'clock hour,
05:22and we can break it down a lot more.
05:24But part of the secondary woes is that you don't rush the passer.
05:28Right.
05:29So you're asking these guys to cover forever,
05:31and nobody can do it covering forever,
05:34and you're going up against Devontae Adams and Puka Nakua.
05:37So last night's assignment, even with a good pass rush,
05:40was going to be difficult.
05:41And when you have to, you know,
05:43Tutu Atwell and the big catch in overtime,
05:45that was a complete deep crosser.
05:48And to do a deep crosser, you run 20 or 30 yards down the field,
05:52then you run all the way across the field.
05:54That takes time, and they were able to do it
05:57because you didn't get to Stafford.
05:58That's a great point.
05:59It's a great point.
05:59I'm also glad he brought up what he did.
06:01And again, all opinions are welcome,
06:02and I know there's no way we're going to stop the world
06:05from talking about the quarterback position today.
06:09But along the lines of his observation,
06:12I do think it's wild that we're here this quickly.
06:15Nobody's immune.
06:16Nobody's immune.
06:18This is professional sports, and if somebody else outplays you,
06:21somebody else outplays you and does this.
06:23But it is wild to me that you have a quarterback
06:26who still hasn't even, like, this is the final year
06:29of his original rookie contract, if you will.
06:32He still hasn't even expired the rookie contract.
06:35He's taking you to two NFC title games.
06:37He's taking you to a Super Bowl.
06:38And this, that's how some fans want to do him?
06:42Three games, three wins without him, and now got to get him out of here.
06:46And by the way, he's played twice this year,
06:48and he won one of those two, and it was a road game in Seattle.
06:50I just find it weird.
06:53You want to have the opinion, okay,
06:55but, like, you really want to erase all of that this quickly?
07:00You said it earlier in the week that tell me you don't believe in Brock
07:04without telling me you don't believe in Brock,
07:05and that's what this is.
07:07I think that you and I are of like mind where you can celebrate Mac Jones,
07:12and we have and we will and we are.
07:14And you can have the Brock Purdy conversation if you even think there is one.
07:18That can be a separate conversation.
07:20For me right now, I'm basking, I'm masking in Mac Jones
07:24because he has been unbelievable.
07:27And last night, the grit, the toughness, the throws he made,
07:32they weren't all Picassos.
07:33He had a couple that maybe should have been picked off, but they weren't,
07:37and that's the way football goes.
07:38But Mac Jones has been spectacular.
07:40He was tremendous last night.
07:41And in a moment where the moment got big, the assignment got even bigger,
07:47and the platform was huge, and then it got tougher as it went
07:52because he just kept getting more and more hurt as the night went on.
07:55I don't know how you can't come away inspired in the moment
07:59by what he did last night.
08:02I mean, it was the biggest professional night of his life.
08:04Yeah, and the opening two drives, 163 yards combined, two touchdowns,
08:09and that was what won the game.
08:11Yep.
08:11After that, you only had four field goals.
08:13You scored boom, boom, and then you kind of had to hold on for dear life,
08:17and he was literally fighting for his life out there.
08:20No question.
08:20No question.
08:21All right.
08:22Let's go to Mike in Davis City.
08:23Hi, Mike.
08:24Thanks for the call.
08:24What's up?
08:26Gentlemen, good afternoon.
08:27Thanks for taking the call.
08:28Yes, sir.
08:29Yeah.
08:29So, after watching the game, waking up this morning, definitely an awesome game.
08:35Edge on your seat game.
08:37Definitely a shout-out to Mac Jones, Big Mac, Mac Daddy, Mac Money.
08:42Very, very great performance.
08:43But how about big props to Eddie P?
08:48Eddie P, ice cold in his veins.
08:50De Niro, right?
08:53There's this Marvel character.
08:54His name is Deadshot, right?
08:56If you guys know.
08:56But that's my nickname for him, Deadshot De Niro.
08:59And love the fact that Jed York was rooting, waiting for him when they were running back
09:04for the tunnel to the locker room.
09:06So, that's it, guys.
09:07Thank you for taking the call.
09:09Okay, Mike.
09:09Thank you very much.
09:10I think we're all good now with the De Niro nickname, right?
09:13Like, we all wanted to see it first.
09:15We good now?
09:16Oh, I think we're good.
09:17We ready to ride?
09:18Eddie the Doinker De Niro.
09:21De Niro.
09:21And that wasn't a full doink.
09:22That was a grazer.
09:23Yeah, it was a drive-by.
09:25But I thought when that was heading toward the upright, I was thinking, oh, no.
09:29I mean, this could be a doinker, and he had his career-long a 59-yarder.
09:32My only concern about Eddie Pinero is the celebrations, because I'm thinking about Gramatica.
09:40Oh, boy.
09:40I think it was Bill Gramatica who tore at ACL.
09:42I think it was Martine, actually.
09:43It was one of them Gramaticas.
09:45Might have been both of them.
09:46I don't know.
09:46Either way, but he gets so excited.
09:49It's like, okay, settle down.
09:51No, but I like that.
09:52I like kicker trash talk or whatever.
09:54You know what I mean?
09:55Like, when he hit the one against Arizona.
09:57It was Bill.
09:58Was it?
09:59Yeah.
09:59W for you.
10:01Then again.
10:01Took the L last night.
10:03Yeah, Whittingham as a receiver.
10:04But anyway.
10:05Anyway.
10:06Yeah.
10:06I kept it until you wanted to smash my face in something, and then I'm like, I'm going
10:10to smash your face back.
10:12Anyway, I love that.
10:14Like, I wanted to know what he said when he kicked that ball through against Arizona.
10:20And it's Whittington, so.
10:21Whatever.
10:22You called him Whittingham.
10:23Anyway.
10:23Al did.
10:24Al did.
10:24Whatever.
10:25We're going to fight.
10:25The point is, when he kicked the ball through the uprights against Arizona, he sort of did
10:33like, he did a celebration that looked like Steph Curry, where it's kind of like, my house.
10:40This is my house.
10:41And I'm like, you just got here, dude.
10:43You don't even have a key yet.
10:44Right.
10:44So, I don't.
10:45You're renting somewhere.
10:46You're probably in a hotel.
10:47I don't even know what he was saying.
10:49But I so badly, I hope I'm in a locker room with him at some point where I can ask him,
10:54hey, will you take me back to that Arizona game?
10:56What did you say?
10:57Because I was like, I like kicker trash talk.
11:00I really want to know what he said.
11:02So, whatever.
11:04But I don't think he's going to, I don't think he's going to tear his ACL.
11:07I hope.
11:08No.
11:08Please don't.
11:09He reminded me a little bit of, and you don't know the bowler Pete Weber, but he would do
11:13the double crotch chop.
11:15Yeah.
11:15I've heard of that.
11:16He's the guy with the wild, slick back hair, and when he would have a big strike, he would
11:21go for the double.
11:22Sha, sha.
11:23And that reminds me of Eddie a little bit, because he gets fired up.
11:25Perfect.
11:25888-957-9570.
11:27Next is Ron in Walnut Creek.
11:30Hi, Ron.
11:31What's going on, man?
11:34Hey, guys.
11:34I love your show.
11:35But, hey, Willard, I didn't get to call you out on that comment you made in your all
11:40coaches make mistakes.
11:42Yes, it was.
11:43And that is about an 88% win rate when you get 30 rushes.
11:48So.
11:55And.
