Following a snowy Friday across much of Virginia, the same line of storms is soaking areas farther south with rain as the weekend arrives.
Transcript
00:00This is the most snow we've had on December 5th on the ground since 2005, 20 years ago.
00:05Hard to believe that was 20 years ago.
00:07But we've been dealing with 45.4% of the nation covered in snow as of 1 a.m. this morning.
00:12They only capture this data once a day at 1 a.m. Eastern.
00:15But one thing that did not get captured by this was the additional, I don't know, 2, 3% of the nation covered in snow
00:23when we add in Virginia, Maryland, southern New Jersey, Delaware.
00:28Pretty good snow there.
00:30So that's for the lower 48 states.
00:32This is what was not captured in that data.
00:34So additional snow cover now here into parts of Virginia.
00:38And we had 4 inches down in Petersburg, Virginia.
00:41That's south of Richmond.
00:43Really impressive stuff.
00:44Current temps, we've got a big contrast.
00:4578 in Miami, but only 37 up in Charlotte and 35 in Nashville, Tennessee right now.
00:51So the rain's going to continue to move east, and our storm system has exited.
00:55But there will be some lingering low-level moisture, so freezing drizzle will be a concern.
01:00Into parts of Virginia tonight.
01:02And thunderstorms and showers rolling through the area of Jacksonville, Florida.
01:06Now through St. Simons Island and Brunswick as well.
01:09So rain and thunderstorms relatively heavy in the northeastern part of the Gulf Coast states.
01:12And into southern South Carolina, the low country there near Beaufort and Hilton Head and other areas nearby.
01:19So again, tonight, showers linger.
01:21But look at this.
01:22One more disturbance produces another round of rain into New Orleans, southern Mississippi, southern and central parts of Alabama.
01:28Tomorrow, this moves through Georgia, through South Carolina, often on periods of rain.
01:33And then Saturday afternoon and evening, we'll get a little quieter.
01:35There could be a shower up there near Charlotte, though, as the ACC championship game could be impacted by that.
01:42It's an outdoor event.
01:43A lot of these conference championships, like the one at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, under the roof.
01:48But again, the ACC championship game.
01:51Duke against Virginia in Charlotte.
01:54A couple of showers around.
01:55And they're playing there in an NFL outdoor venue.
01:59Sunday, we have more showers lingering near the Gulf.
02:02But most of us will be a little quieter.
02:04Also, some sneaky rain and maybe some snow into parts of Kentucky as well.
