Pouring rain is likely to cause flash flooding throughout the week in Southern California, while multiple feet of snow fall at high elevations.
Transcript
00:00Let's go to the west now where video shows heavy rain coming down in California.
00:05This is Borrego Springs, one of the drier spots of San Diego County there.
00:11The desert floor, heavy rain underway.
00:14We're going to see more of this and take a look at this.
00:16It's a very active pattern.
00:17We've got one storm system in progress, another one coming down the pike,
00:20another one all the way out there into the Bering Sea.
00:22And this series of storms just will continue to come on around the North Pacific into the Northeast Pacific
00:30and impacting California.
00:32Very stormy pattern until at least the middle of next week, February 25th, rain, spotty thunderstorms.
00:39There is a risk for severe weather in parts of Southern California and localized flooding.
00:43And, again, we may see, this is pretty incredible, 12 to 16 feet of snow in the Sierra over a
00:50two-week window.
00:51Very impressive.
00:52It's in progress in a big way right now.
00:54You can see some of these areas in the high ground where we're going to stay well below freezing.
00:58Reno, some snow and periods of snow showers, 26 there for your low showers in San Francisco.
01:03But the heavier rain tonight, Fresno, Bakersfield, Los Angeles, San Diego,
01:07right down through Central and Southern California.
01:09The San Joaquin Valley is in on it.
01:11Flagstaff, a rain-snow mix.
01:12Phoenix, some rain showers.
01:14Rain at a Grand Junction, high-elevation snow.
01:16Salt Lake City, it's rain for you again.
01:18It will get colder throughout the course of the week.
01:20Snow level is coming down.
01:22Tuesday, a very, very wet day with rounds of this slinging into California's coast and moving through the interior.
01:29And the snow levels will be progressively getting lower and lower.
01:32That means you don't have to travel as far up into the mountains or as high in elevation to get
01:37from rain to snow.
01:38So the footprint of the snow is going to increase.
01:41And here's another surge of it.
01:42Tuesday, 10 a.m.
01:44Here we are.
01:45More snow and rain.
01:47That's actually 7 a.m. Pacific.
01:48That was 10 a.m. Eastern.
01:50So it's coming in pretty heavily.
01:51More rounds of this will be pivoting in into Wednesday night.
01:55And more Wednesday evening and Wednesday night into Thursday.
01:59It's just one after the next year.
02:00The trajectory of these storms coming in off the northeast Pacific, one after the other, impacting the Golden State.
02:07So it's very high-impact rain, very high-impact snow.
02:11This winter or wet season has had a very unusual rhythm.
02:15It was all in November into December.
02:17Then it got so quiet and dry in January, we lost some of our snowpack.
02:21But here we are into mid to late February.
02:23We're right back into it in a big way.
02:25Two to four inches of rain into San Francisco.
02:27You'll notice the coastal rain south of there near Pebble Beach.
02:31We're looking at potential for four-plus inches of rain there through the course of the week, Sunday through Thursday.
02:35Santa Maria to two to four inches, L.A., two to four.
02:38But up into the foothills north of the city, we'll see more than that.
02:43Localized four-plus.
02:44The Sierra snow is just incredible here.
02:47So through Friday, we're looking at eight to 12 feet of snow in the higher elevations of the Sierra.
02:52Road closures, if you're trying to get through Donner Pass, there will be times when it is just straight-up
02:57closed
02:58because of Caltrans just coming to tackle and coming to grips here with the tremendous amount of snow.
03:04This will certainly benefit summer water supply yet again.
03:07And the snow in Southern California's mountains will be mounting up here as well,
03:11eventually as we'll see a foot or two above 6,000 feet.
03:15Snow levels will gradually fall to around 3,000 feet on Tuesday.
03:18And there are potential closures for the Grapevine there to hone and Cajon Passes here.
03:24I-15 and I-5 could be closed at times as well.
