Cyclists from across the region are gearing up for greatness.

As they take part in a two-week training camp hosted by the International Cycling Union.

This week marks week two of the initiative, taking place at the National Velodrome in Couva.

The participating riders say the experience has been a real boost and believe it'll go a long way in raising the level of competition across the Pan American region.

00:00Part of learning involves listening and cyclists in the UCI camp were all ears to the UCI coach
00:06James Hay on what they need to improve.
00:09So, I've taken some notes and there's a few common mistakes what I'm seeing amongst the
00:16group but I'll give you individual feedback.
00:19Obviously it's our first effort, you're just doing what you know.
00:23I'm a coach with a fresh set of eyes so don't say it personally, it's an observation, it's
00:28not a criticism.
00:2919-year-old Daniel James rides for Arima Wheelers and he has embraced the UCI camp experience.
00:37He has been cycling for four years, wants to compete at the World Championships and Olympics
00:41if possible.
00:42Thus far, he has won a bronze at the Junior Pan American Games and a double bronze at the
00:47Under-23 Pan American Games in Paraguay.
00:51His personal best in the Flying 200 is 10.2 seconds and he's hoping to do a sub-10 following
00:57the camp.
00:58So far, we have learned carrying, we did carrying simulations, that's my favorite sprinting
01:05event.
01:06We have learned about nutrition, what to eat.
01:11So do you think you'll be a better cyclist at the end of this camp?
01:15Yes.
01:16I think I must improve and if not on the bike, off the bike.
01:22The cyclist, Kevin Estrada is also happy that the UCI camp is taking place in TNT as he looks
01:28forward to competing against the Red, White and Black.
01:31I think it will be interesting because obviously you are seeing and we are seeing how they ride.
01:42They are pretty tough, they look pretty tough and yeah, it will be interesting.
01:48I like, I'm a competitive person so as much harder it will get, it's more exciting for me.
01:57The girls are also embracing the knowledge from the camp.
02:01Ariel Greaves, who represents Barbados, is a former triathlete who branched off to cycling.
02:06She started at age 15 and now at 17, she has gone all in.
02:10It's a very good opportunity because I get to learn more about the sport, the techniques and
02:18the more data side, the analytic side of the sport which is, now that I'm seeing, is a very
02:25important factor in cycling.
02:28She says the camp has changed her views on the sport as she understands now that feeling good
02:33about a performance is not the same as knowing the facts about your output.
02:37How do you intend to implement this moving forward?
02:41Use more of the training peaks that the coach has introduced to really see the improvements
02:49technically instead of just feeling because at the end of the day feeling is just a feeling but
02:55the analysis is actually true.
02:57She's hoping to go to the World Cup.
03:00TNT's Alexia Wilson is a track sprinter who also competes for Arima Wheelers and it's not her
03:05first UCI camp.
03:07Coming into this camp, what were your expectations?
03:11Well, it's my fourth UCI camp.
03:13So each camp, I come as a sponge.
03:16It's always a new coach.
03:18Every time I've come, I've gotten personal best, good tactics for the track.
03:23They always stress nutrition, diet.
03:25We learn that sport is a holistic, it's a holistic thing.
03:29So it's not just, oh, coming and training.
03:31It's what you're doing before or you're doing after, your mentors going in.
03:34And through this camp, I was really hoping to specify on my starts and I'm seeing it.
03:41At present, Wilson is aiming for 11.3 seconds in the flying 200 meters at the Pan American
03:46Championships in 2026.
03:48And she's taking the tips to get there from UCI coach James Hay.
03:52Sergio DeFort, TV6port.
