Transcript
00:00Distance runner Shane Bissoon has been on an upward trajectory on the road. He's
00:05hoping to compete in the 1500 meter event and the 5000 meter race if he
00:10qualifies for the Currifter Games. He is 17 years old and attends Presentation
00:14College San Fernando and was proud to win the Prez 7k road race and reduces
00:19winning time by two minutes. I'm just well my predicted time is way under the
00:26Currifter time but I have a little mental issue where I doubt myself a little too much so
00:33because of that I'm a little bit slower than well a little bit yeah a little bit
00:37slower than the Currifter standard time. So I'm hoping to unlock my true potential by
00:43the end of by Currifter. He wants to reach up to the marathon level but he
00:47enjoys the 10k the most. In his last marathon in Barbados, Bissoon finished
00:52seventh overall on debut in a time of 3 hours 34 minutes 46 seconds. I think I
00:59like like 10k the most yeah but I guess that comes with time the amount of
01:06mileage you do and things. Before I liked 5k's a lot and I hated the 10k's but
01:15now that I'm doing and increasing my mileage and training and all that I started to like the 10k's
01:20and I saw what I want to reach up to a marathon. To run a marathon comfortable and do sub 2.50.
01:29Apart from having to achieve the standard time of sub 17 minutes for the
01:345,000 meter event for Currifter, he may also have to battle for a spot with
01:38other runners to make the national team. His coach Brian Maynard believes he has
01:43the capability to make it but the trick is to unlock his mental barriers. On track
01:48yes I should say to make I'm qualifying standard yes but as his coach right now
01:57present he still has a lot still has far to go mentally not physically. So is it
02:04that you're pushing him so hard that he isn't sure that he could go any places
02:10that you want him to go? It's more how I put it is not that I'm pushing him physically but
02:17mentally he's unlocked that talent within him. And how do you do that?
02:23That is something is it's not just physically coaching naturally need to be
02:28sitting down one-on-one and talk and it's a trying process. Maynard believes that once
02:35he unravels that puzzle Bassoon's magic will flow come race day. Sergio Dufour
