00:00This town is haunted.
00:15Ghost stories are everywhere.
00:18We are standing pretty close to thousands of dead bodies.
00:21The dogs are running into the hall.
00:23Hello?
00:24Hello?
00:25You have to ask yourself, if this has happened, then what is next?
00:49Towns and buildings across America resonate with the energies of those who have lived within them.
00:55These energies leave psychic stains, dark echoes and scars of the past that continue to permeate buildings and objects long after the living have moved on.
01:08On North America's Atlantic coast, the small town of Pictou, Nova Scotia, holds on to psychic stains from the past.
01:21This historic harbor town was established by Scottish settlers in the 1700s.
01:28Pictou is famous for all the immigration from Scotland that happened after the Battle of Culloden and the Scottish clearances.
01:34Forced to flee the poverty and persecution imposed on them by the British in the 18th century, the settlers built this new town in the old Scottish style.
01:47But despite their charming exterior, the walls of the town resonate with the energy of terror and torment.
01:54Living in Pictou, the ghost stories are everywhere.
02:01I do believe that these buildings in the town of Pictou do hold something paranormal.
02:10The Lorraine Inn is definitely an interesting old home in town that I think has a lot of stories to tell.
02:16In the center of town sits the site of the former Lorraine Inn, built in the 1820s by stonemason John Lorraine.
02:27John Lorraine immigrated from Scotland and he actually brought some of the stone from his house in Scotland as ballast in the ship.
02:35And when he arrived here in Pictou, he rebuilt his house using the stone from the Scottish islands.
02:43Anytime you have organic material, wood, rock, stone, they all are capable of capturing energies.
02:52And so in this particular instance, you've got this home that was dismantled in Scotland and brought over to Canada.
02:58It's going to carry a lot of that energy with it.
03:00It's the very definition of a psychic imprint.
03:02The building originally served as an inn, tavern, and stagecoach stop and became central to the town of Pictou.
03:13John Lorraine was a very important person in the town.
03:19Not only was he a stone nation, he ran the inn and would also carve a gravestone.
03:26But as new industry developed, Pictou's importance as a harbor declined and the inn eventually fell out of use.
03:39Anne McNeil Porter now lives in the former Lorraine Inn with her husband Dave.
03:45The property has been in Dave's family since 1905.
03:48What I love the most about Pictou is my history's here.
03:52My whole family was born and raised here generations back.
03:56There's just something about this community that just makes you want to be here and watch it thrive and survive.
04:02But it wasn't long after I moved into the house with Dave that I realized that there was a dark entity here.
04:08I just started feeling chills, heard weird noises.
04:12You just had this uneasy feeling that there was something there.
04:16Anne soon has a terrifying experience that confirms she and Dave are not alone in the house.
04:24One afternoon, I was in the kitchen all by myself, just straightening up, doing some dishes.
04:28A nine-year-old Metro girl has a new lease on life thanks to surgery at the hospital for sick children.
04:33Tracy Hooper was given the liver of a nine-year-old accident victim in a four-hour operation.
04:38The food is in critical but stable condition.
04:40Normal after such an operation.
04:42Air condition will be monitored for 22 hours to see if there's any sign of organ rejection.
04:47Rick Manson's world motion tour is over and what a success it was.
04:51Manson skateboarded across Canada in 11 months.
05:00I've had this cold chill over my body.
05:03I just kind of froze.
05:15It wasn't music.
05:16It was just like three keys hit very slowly, just one after the other.
05:23It was actually quite eerie.
05:26The side door in the kitchen opens and Dave came in.
05:29So then I thought to myself, okay, he's here.
05:36Who played the piano?
05:37The two of us walked through the piano room.
05:55And it was empty.
06:06I just knew then that something paranormal was happening to us.
06:11Is the piano still in the house?
06:13It is.
06:13Would you like to see it?
06:14Yeah.
06:14Okay.
06:15Just follow us right through here.
06:17So this is what we call the piano room.
06:19The piano's been in the family since about 1905.
06:22It's always been in this house.
06:24So who played the piano then?
06:26I don't know.
06:27Dave's family used to say that the piano would play on its own quite a bit.
06:30So chances are it is somebody who was connected to the house, personally, spiritually.
06:43The spiritual energy is deeply woven into the fabric of the house.
06:49Anne begins to feel the spirits in every corner.
06:51Even the family dog can sense things aren't quite right.
06:57One night, I was here all by myself with just the dog.
07:00Sitting, reading, just having a quiet night.
07:03And all of a sudden...
07:04And all of a sudden, I was here all by myself.
07:34The dog went running into the hall, barking.
07:40He came back with his hair standing right up on his neck like he was totally upset and agitated over something.
07:45I'd never seen him react like that before.
07:48Just seeing the dog, that upset, was unsettling.
07:52Hello?
07:54Hello?
07:55My heart was racing.
07:57Is there somebody there?
08:00But there was nobody there.
08:01Usually when you have a spirit that is doing something that's very loud or destructive,
08:08it's really trying to show that it's not happy about having its space disturbed,
08:13that it might be a territorial spirit or a spirit with a lot of power.
08:17So this would be very indicative that John Lorraine, that his spirit is there.
08:22But it's not just the specter of John Lorraine that resonates within the walls of the home.
08:35The building itself has had many past lives,
08:38and psychic stains from its tumultuous history still remain.
08:42This is the facade of the house that faces the street.
08:46So these would be the stones that John Lorraine took down in Scotland,
08:50and he brought the house over back in 1820.
08:54How long it was in Scotland, we don't know.
08:57But this is how it's looked for centuries.
09:01The energy of this house is in these stones.
09:03One day through the front window, Dave sees an echo of this energy,
09:09an apparition from another time.
09:11I was coming from the kitchen over here.
09:15I'm walking in, I'm looking out the window.
09:21And then I noticed the silhouette of this person.
09:27It was a girl, like 16 years old.
09:33I watched this silhouette move, and it never goes to that second window.
09:51I go up to look to the window.
09:53No one's there.
09:56Unbelievable.
09:57Where is that person?
09:58There should have been someone there.
10:00So you question in your own mind, what did I just see?
10:03It's said that over 100 years ago,
10:08a young woman passing in front of the Lorraine Inn
10:11was trampled by a horse and coach and tragically died.
10:15And it was right in front of this house between the two windows.
10:19Poor girl, how traumatic that would have been.
10:25There's another person who has an attachment to this house.
10:27The manifestation occurring the way that Dave is describing it is not surprising.
10:33We have a tragic occurrence.
10:35We've got someone meeting their end in such a violent way.
10:38That is absolutely a recipe for a psychic compression or stain to be left behind.
10:42Over the years, many members of Dave's family have seen the figure of the girl in the window.
10:52And while this one psychic stain persists,
10:55other spirits have also left their own mark on the walls of this historic house.
11:00Is there any physical evidence of there being spirits here?
11:03There is a child, yes.
11:05There's a child on the third floor.
11:07And he's been here for years.
11:10It wasn't long after we moved in that we found a handprint in the bedroom down here.
11:14I can show it to you if you'd like.
11:15Yeah, can you show it to us?
11:16There is a handprint right there on the wall.
11:23And if you compare my hand, it's definitely a child's handprint on the wall.
11:26And there's no children in the house.
11:29Dave was not there before when we painted.
11:30And then suddenly it appeared.
11:33Who is the child? Do you know?
11:34We don't. He comes and goes.
11:36When we found the handprint, we knew right away that it was the little boy upstairs.
11:40Apparently he used to play with Dave's uncles where all the brothers slept in one room.
11:45And there was a little boy that used to play with them.
11:46And Dave's uncles talked about this little boy.
12:00Dave was watching the hockey game, so I came up to get ready for bed early.
12:15A few minutes later, the bedding moved.
12:40And I felt somebody get in the bed with me.
12:56There was a dark figure next to me.
12:59Dave!
13:02My heart is racing.
13:04Dave!
13:04Dave!
13:10I told him what happened.
13:29He looked all around the room.
13:31He said, there's nobody here.
13:34I felt so vulnerable.
13:35I just felt like, you know, there's somebody invading my space.
13:40It was very unsettling and unnerving that something or someone that I didn't know got that close to me.
13:47We always knew there was something in the house.
13:49But to actually feel it physically close for the first time was quite unnerving.
13:56Despite the many spirits and psychic stains resonating within the old home,
14:00Anne and Dave are determined to preserve its history.
14:06After that night, I was nervous about going to bed by myself.
14:10But then I thought, this is our family home.
14:12We belong here.
14:14I'm not going to let this stop me from feeling comfortable in my own home.
14:18When I married Dave, I married all the spirits that come with this house.
14:23It's almost like a huge extended family in a weird way.
14:26Honoring this house is, it's a privilege and it's a lot of responsibility.
14:34The house means more than just my family.
14:37You know, it's more than that.
14:39It belongs to the town.
14:41Dave and I love the house so much.
14:43We're keepers of the house, just preserving it and also preserving the spirits that are here with us.
14:48Because they belong here just as much as we do.
14:50On the banks of the Missouri River sits the beautiful town of St. Joseph, Missouri.
15:06Established as a trading post in the early 1800s,
15:09it was a final supply stop for pioneers heading west.
15:12And the town quickly became incredibly wealthy.
15:16Lavish buildings were constructed,
15:17and St. Joseph became renowned for its stunning architecture.
15:23But St. Joseph's most imposing structure lies on the outskirts of town.
15:28A former psychiatric hospital.
15:30Originally built to house 250 patients.
15:34But by the 1930s, we housed over 3,000.
15:39The immense facility contained surgery wards,
15:42isolation cells, an autopsy room,
15:44and for those that died within its walls,
15:47a morgue.
15:50It was intended to be a safe place for people to come.
15:54But by the early 1900s,
15:57changes in our knowledge about medicine and science shift.
16:03There's a lot of medical experimentation that's happening
16:06in the state hospitals in the United States.
16:12Electroshock therapy.
16:13Removing patients' teeth.
16:17They were sometimes used as threats
16:21or punishments for bad behavior.
16:25And what made these asylums very scary
16:28was that these treatments were done on patients
16:31without their consent.
16:32In 1997, the mental health services moved to a more modern facility across the road.
16:41And the old asylum was converted for use as a correctional facility.
16:45The former hospital and surgery building now housed the Glor Psychiatric Museum.
16:52And many locals believe energies from the asylum's former patients still exist within its walls.
16:58The Glor Psychiatric Museum is a very interesting place.
17:04I think anyone who's been inside there is hard to deny that it definitely carries some weird energy to it.
17:11The weight of history, the pain of a lot of things that have happened there.
17:15St. Joseph, Missouri, definitely has its spiritual side, both dark and light.
17:29There are hundreds of years of traumatic occurrences here.
17:34It's hard to imagine that that hasn't marked the land and the people in some way.
17:39Max Morgan, the museum's curator, has lived in St. Joseph his whole life.
17:47I started interning here at the Glor Psychiatric Museum as an archival assistant.
17:56And from there, I really just fell in love with the building and all of our town's history.
18:03Not long after starting at the museum, Max was working in the archives,
18:07photographing the collections, when he realizes he's not the only one in the building.
18:12The third floor of our museum used to be the infirmary of the psychiatric hospital.
18:19It would be where patients who had operations would recover.
18:27And now it is where we house all of our objects and historical documents
18:32that aren't on display to the public.
18:34I was entirely alone up here.
18:37I would have been in this room right here.
18:42I would have been sitting right here, and I would have had a box out here with me,
18:46and I would just be taking photos.
18:49In order to get the best photographs of our objects,
18:52we need to have a very dark room.
18:54I get this weird feeling.
19:06I feel like I'm being watched.
19:14Out of the corner of my eye,
19:16I saw someone walk by through the stacks.
19:18It was a very scary.
19:31Hello?
19:32Somebody here?
19:36And when I went in there, there was no one in there.
19:43It was very scary.
19:44I saw something, I don't know how it got in here, I don't know how it got out, and I don't know where it went.
19:49But it was up here with me for who knows how long.
19:55Max would soon find out this was just the beginning.
20:01The next evening, as Max locks up the former surgery rooms for the night, the spirits get too close for comfort.
20:14I was closing up, I was the last person in the building, and I had to go through all of the floors and turn off all the lights.
20:37So the last switch would be right here.
20:40This goes off, then the entire floor is dark, and you've got to walk all the way back to those double doors right there.
20:56I made my way walking through just like a pitch black, dark nothingness.
21:03Passing empty rooms, mannequins.
21:10I close the door, and I start heading down the stairs.
21:21And I get to this step, all the way from the end of the hallway.
21:25I hear someone running, trying to race towards the door to get me.
21:37I hear the door slam full force, like someone was really, really angry.
21:44So I booked it down two flights of stairs.
21:47I was just like freaking out, just like, please, whatever this is, don't let it get me.
21:59When I got to the front door, I was really hurrying with the key, trying to close up.
22:05Can't get it to turn.
22:06And freaking out, and like losing my mind.
22:08But eventually, I did get outside.
22:20Nothing ever came down the stairs.
22:23Nothing showed up to the front door.
22:26It was like the building was empty.
22:28A place like an asylum is going to be saturated and effused with so many different energies.
22:37Usually lower vibrational energies.
22:39Depression, grief, sorrow.
22:41Those kinds of energies are very hard to remove from a space.
22:44So that psychic stain is going to be more concentrated.
22:47Max is not the only one that can feel the spiritual stains.
22:51His colleagues are also experiencing terrifying encounters of their own.
22:55Jared runs the museum's educational programming and conducts private tours of the old building.
23:05Where do you take your sanity, Jared?
23:07Well, we're going down to the basement level of the surgery building from 1968.
23:14There's a morgue and an autopsy room down here.
23:20This is all the original stuff inside.
23:23Even the brain jar is original.
23:25Once the autopsies were complete, the bodies of those that died at the asylum were unceremoniously buried in the adjacent cemetery.
23:37We are standing pretty close to thousands of dead bodies.
23:41And these are some of the original headstones.
23:44So you can see that they were burying them by their patient number.
23:46In places where someone's been laid to rest in an unmarked grave, there are often hauntings.
23:52In these places, those spirits need more acknowledgement that they lived and died.
23:57They need the living to bear witness to their suffering.
24:00It's thought that many of these unnamed souls remain trapped at the asylum, neglected and forgotten.
24:11The psychic stain of their unaccounted deaths persisting for eternity in the walls of the old hospital wards.
24:16One evening, while leading a group tour, Jared has an encounter with a former patient.
24:23This night, I had a small group of about seven, and I load them on the elevator.
24:31I usually take the stairs up to the next floor so that I can meet them up there.
24:35Before I go upstairs, I look down into the conference room, and I see a person.
24:47There shouldn't have been anybody else in here, so I just come down to check in on him.
25:14And when I get here, there's no one in the room.
25:17The only explanation is that I saw an entire apparition.
25:36What's the feeling you get in that moment?
25:38I don't say dosed.
25:40Right, I mean, that's the big mystery, right?
25:42It's 150 years of hospital history.
25:47So anything that you can possibly imagine was probably occurring.
25:53Lots of suffering and so on.
25:58But if there's any place that's haunted, I mean, I would have to say that it's a state hospital.
26:02And the tunnels also are just very haunted.
26:10So all of the different buildings that were on this facility were connected by underground tunnels.
26:15And the tunnels were used to transport goods, clothing, people, and the occasional dead body.
26:20It is very echoey.
26:31That metal gate would have been used to prevent patients from escaping out that way.
26:35How does it feel for me to be down here?
26:42At night, this is the worst place when all of these lights are off.
26:47We've had quite a few paranormal experiences down here.
26:51A shadow figure climbing on the ceiling in the darkness.
26:54Hello?
27:01Do you hear that?
27:06It's like a weird knocking sound.
27:09Seriously, did you hear that?
27:13What was that?
27:16What was that sound?
27:17I don't know.
27:17That was freaky.
27:19Yeah, I heard that.
27:19Let's get out of here.
27:23The spirits lurk in every corner of the hospital building.
27:31One evening, Max makes the mistake of trying to communicate with the spirits that haunt the hospital's walls.
27:39This is one of our boiler rooms that powers the whole building.
27:42Me and a group of other staff members, it was after hours.
27:45And we decide to try and communicate, reach out to the spirits.
27:54We're all sitting in a circle, and we're taking turns passing around the spirit box trying to get responses.
28:01A spirit box is a tiny machine that bounces between radio frequencies.
28:07And it's believed that ghosts can impact the machine and make it respond.
28:11So instead of radio static, you'll get, like, a short one- or two-word response.
28:16No one's really getting any responses.
28:19And then it was my turn to use the box.
28:22So I tried to be genuine and reach out.
28:26Is there anyone here with us?
28:27Everyone freezes, because we had been getting nothing all night.
28:43I asked, what's your name?
28:47Margaret.
28:50How long have you been here, Margaret?
28:5330 years.
28:54And we kind of just keep on going back and forth.
29:00Margaret, who's your favorite employee?
29:02You, Max.
29:06I was the only one who got responses, so I'm kind of feeling full of myself.
29:10So I reached up, and I'm like, Margaret, will you hold my hand?
29:12My arm.
29:21I can't feel my arm.
29:26My hand immediately goes numb, just, like, radio static.
29:30But then it started moving up.
29:31My arm and that tingling, cold feeling got stronger and stronger.
29:37I freak out.
29:38And I feel like the presence kind of just, like, lifts, like, a weight.
29:51Like, just went back to normal.
29:52It was terrifying to sort of reach out and actually, like, have contact with a spirit.
30:07I get the idea that maybe she was a nurse.
30:11There was, at one point, 3,000 people who called this place home, and that's not even counting the people who worked there.
30:17So it could be any number of things.
30:22So I don't know.
30:25But not normal.
30:33That tingling sensation, that's that spirit drawing that energy from this person.
30:39In a lot of instances, the connection that the spirit is looking for is to kind of empower them,
30:43to give them a little bit more energy.
30:47It's scary, especially the first time you experience something like that.
30:52Max continues to work at the museum, undaunted by the psychic stains contained within it.
30:59Part of the job working here is being okay with things that you can't explain.
31:04If you pay attention to every single weird, creepy thing that happens, you're never going to get any work done or stay sane.
31:14We are custodians of the building, and part of that is being custodians of the ghosts who call this place home.
31:22We try to be very respectful of them.
31:26These were real people with full lives, experience, loved ones.
31:31And that them living in a mental asylum did not make them lesser or otherwise.
31:38They are still people whose stories deserve to be told.
31:41In the small town of Beaton, Ontario, psychic stains cast a dark shadow over every street.
31:57Beaton is a cute, quaint little town.
31:59It's a lovely town, but there's a little bit of spookiness about it in Beaton.
32:06Beaton has gone through a lot of traumatic times.
32:09There's spirits in this town.
32:12Established in the mid-19th century, the bustling town was the site of a terrible tragedy.
32:17In 1892, a fire broke out on the main street, and in less than four hours, much of the town was reduced to ashes.
32:26The fires, well, they started just up the street here, and they came down the street, and they took all this.
32:35The next morning, this was gone.
32:38Of all things.
32:40In a town like Beaton, where you've had a lot of destructive events, such as fires, sudden loss of life,
32:45those areas leave behind very high psychic stains that are imprinted in a higher concentration.
32:54The fire stopped just short of a beautiful property known as the Simpson House.
33:00While it narrowly escaped the fate of the rest of the town,
33:03its walls still contain echoes of terror from this past devastation.
33:08For the last 14 years, the house has been owned by Jody Farrell James and her family.
33:15The first time that we drove to Beaton, it was like driving into the past.
33:21My husband and I were both raised in a small town, and having a historical home,
33:26that's actually been a dream of ours for a very long time.
33:28But on the first day that we moved in, we realized that there was something else going on with his home.
33:36While unpacking boxes, Jody and her daughter Lauren have a ghostly encounter.
33:43On moving day, my mom wanted to be as out of boxes as she could.
33:48You know, her dream home set up by the end of the day.
33:50We worked very hard to unpack everything.
33:56And being in a new place, I wanted to check things out.
34:00So I thought that I would walk into this front room here.
34:04I noticed standing right here in this archway was a dark figure.
34:09I couldn't make out any features.
34:13I thought it was my brother.
34:14So, what do you think?
34:20He said nothing to me, which is odd.
34:28Caleb, what's wrong?
34:38Lauren?
34:40Who are you talking to?
34:42Caleb.
34:42Caleb is upstairs unpacking boxes.
34:49I was just talking to him.
34:50That's not Caleb.
34:58I just froze.
34:59I couldn't move.
35:01I felt a tightness in my chest.
35:12That he was gone.
35:19I tried to make it make sense.
35:24There was no one in this house who that could have been.
35:26And that was when the fear really hit.
35:32My mother and I looked at each other and we didn't even know what to say.
35:37I can remember thinking, what did we do?
35:41This was our first day in the home.
35:45It made us wonder if maybe we'd made a mistake by moving here.
35:49Here we have the spirit that is mimicking the human form.
35:55You would think that she would be able to tell if she was actually talking to her brother.
35:58But this spirit has convinced her.
36:00That's a powerful form of energy.
36:04At times it can be quite unnerving to be alone in this home.
36:07There's a lot of creaking, a lot of door closing.
36:13Sometimes we hear people walking.
36:16It's not a good feeling.
36:20This house is so important to my mother.
36:23She has put her heart into every square inch of this place.
36:26It's her dream home.
36:27It's what she's always wanted.
36:29And the thought of it becoming a frightening, unsafe place for her is very upsetting.
36:37The guest room for some reason is always a different temperature than the rest of the house.
36:45One afternoon when Jody was alone in the house, she gets the feeling that something is not quite right.
36:56I could feel this draft and couldn't figure out where it was coming from.
37:07I realized that the window was open.
37:20I'm getting a strange feeling.
37:24Close the window.
37:26Lock it.
37:28And quickly leave the guest room.
37:30And quickly leave the guest room.
38:00Later, lo and behold, that window was open again.
38:12I closed the window and I realized that I'm not alone in the house.
38:20Here's the guest room.
38:21So, why is the window open?
38:33I don't know if somebody's trying to get our attention.
38:35Somebody's trying to get out.
38:37I think it's maybe a ghost saying, hey, look, I'm here.
38:40Pay attention.
38:40When was the last time this happened?
38:48I don't know.
38:48It happens all the time.
38:49So, probably a month ago or so.
38:51Yeah.
38:52It still happens frequently.
38:54It's possible that Jodi keeps finding this window open because the spirit might be doing something on a symbolic level.
39:01Opening, creating a portal into her home.
39:04This home already holds a lot of psychic energy.
39:07So, with the opening of this window, the spirit might be trying to magnify or focus this energy into the home.
39:13There's something in this house.
39:19Whatever is going on here, we are getting the message that we're not alone.
39:24The dark presence in Jodi's home continues to make itself known.
39:28And one night, it reaches out to her directly.
39:32I was alone, just cleaning up after dinner.
39:35The hairs on the back of my neck stood up.
39:54I could feel a presence.
39:57Male presence.
39:58Hello?
40:00Somebody there?
40:05I felt a hand on my shoulder.
40:35You have to ask yourself, if this has happened, then what is next?
40:59Jodi's son, Caleb, feels the horrifying impact of psychic stains in another room of their house.
41:05One night, it was just me and my girlfriend.
41:08We were picking something to watch on TV.
41:16She got up to go to the washroom.
41:18And suddenly, I hear this blood-curling scream.
41:39She was just terrified.
41:40She closed the medicine cabinet door, and in the reflection, there was a figure, dark and shadowy.
41:54I checked around.
41:56I run outside to look.
41:57And there's no one on the property.
42:09Whatever this figure was, it wasn't natural.
42:11Mirrors are often used as spirit portals from one dimension to the next.
42:20A mirror might provide another means of really identifying what that psychic stain is, acting as a conduit, a view screen between worlds.
42:31I don't tell people that the house is haunted, but it's such a small town that everyone talks about it.
42:39You can feel the presence of something.
42:42Jodi and her family love their hometown of Beaton and won't be pushed out.
42:48I think that it's a spirit that has a connection to this place that can't leave.
42:56And I feel to that spirit, it's important to know us, to know who is coming into their home.
43:05My parents went through so much to be here, and we wouldn't leave for the world.
43:13We love this home.
43:14Whatever's here is part of the home now, and it's part of us.
43:19There are a lot of paranormal experiences that happen in this little...
