00:00this town is definitely haunted you know that you're not the only one here I can feel a cold
00:21hand against my back I bolt out of there as fast as possible the room was full of electrical energy
00:29you could feel it the door just ripped right out of my hand in the name of Jesus Christ I command you
00:34to leave this is my house get out I thought this can't get any worse and then it did
00:51this place is haunted
00:52towns and cities across the world are haunted by departed souls and among them child spirits walk
01:07unseen their short lives tragically taken far too soon child spirits can be very unpredictable
01:14they're imbued with mischievousness with silliness with playfulness we should approach those kinds
01:20of spirits with care and caution
01:22in central Kentucky lies the picturesque town of Cynthiana a small community with a big heart
01:34the childhood was the most memorable experience anybody could ever have riding your bikes playing
01:41outside just just a wonderful town what I love about Cynthiana is uh like how small it is
01:47I just like the country atmosphere we pretty much know everyone here or you know someone who knows
01:56someone it's really a family-oriented little town
02:00Cynthiana's streets are lined with historic buildings but stories of tragedy and death lie just beneath the
02:09surface the city was the site of multiple battles in both the American Revolution and the Civil War
02:15when you walk on Pike Street here you're walking on the site of the Civil War battles part of the
02:23county was southern part of the county was northern it really was family against family
02:28lots of people died here in Cynthiana there is blood in the soil you walk on top of it all the time
02:36over the years the town has also fallen victim to many deadly fires
02:41a lot of the buildings on Pike Street here in town were burned in the 1800s it really was a tragic
02:48thing that happened in the fires countless lives were lost and local residents know the town still
02:56retains dark shadows from its tragic past there is a dark history in Cynthiana this town is definitely
03:04haunted Cynthiana has been around for a long time a lot of the buildings downtown are really old so
03:09there is something mysterious going on here Cynthiana does have many historical sites the Ross Opera
03:17House is one of the greatest treasures we have in Cynthiana a former theater the Ross Opera House was
03:24built in 1871 on the ashes of the incinerated Pike Street it's been home to a traditional cinema since
03:32the 1940s and is the oldest continually running movie theater in Kentucky
03:40Roger Slade is co-owner of the theater and has lived in Cynthiana his whole life Roger interview take one mark
03:48Cynthiana is the kind of town that you would read about in years gone by typical small town Americana the
03:56neighborhood kids we went out when the sun came up and came home when the street lights came on played
04:01baseball just typical nostalgic childhood my first movie was here as a kid you almost time travel it
04:11takes you to another world was just magic you could escape for for two hours
04:15but Roger was soon to experience a different world altogether when a number of terrifying scenes
04:27inside the theater play out like a real-life horror film
04:33so I came in one night it was a winter night it was dark outside and I had to meet a courier down here
04:38the hallways always dark but tonight there was a heaviness to the darkness something seems off I get
04:47right about here I heard something and it was a giggle a little creeped out at this point because
04:55there's nobody in this building except me hello you could tell they were coming from the main theater
05:03I'm not alone I know there's somebody in the theater with me
05:16hello anyone there
05:25now flip on the breakers as fast as I can
05:28I'm thinking I'm gonna see a child and there's nobody there
05:34then I hear noise coming from the front of the theater
05:38and it's the courier who's come in to deliver the film
05:42there's one more little he he he giggle I'm not gonna go look and see what it is I just
05:47decide that it's time to go home
05:56movie theaters are fun they're exciting they're also these magical places in which you know we're thrust
06:02into different kinds of stories and realms so a child spirit being drawn to a theater makes a lot of sense
06:10roger soon realizes there is an entire cast of ghostly characters walking the halls
06:15so I'm here it's a slow night um I'm always hanging out by the concession just in case somebody comes and they want something
06:30there's a fire I think you need to go back there see a woman and she says hey there's
06:39some smoke in the stairway so obviously you're in an old theater you hear smoke you're thinking
06:44got to be a fire I glance into the concession stand to make sure no popcorn's burning anytime
06:50you see smoke in a theater in these older buildings with the wiring and the extreme temperatures of
06:54the bulbs you want to get to the projection room as soon as you can
06:57I realized that nothing's on fire there's no hot breakers and I come down the stairs I get about right here
07:10this cold air comes down the steps it wasn't natural if that makes sense
07:17I've realized I'm standing right in the middle of something that's paranormal
07:30it was overwhelming exhilarating and terrifying if that makes sense
07:35I'd snapped a picture with my cell phone and this is what was on the picture some kind of energy some
07:40kind of mist you can see a child here that we caught going right up these stairs when documenting
07:47the paranormal it's really important to photograph the things you see or sense because these cameras
07:53can detect things that the human eye can't register for instance full spectrum cameras or thermal cameras
07:59can see into a different range of the infrared that our human eyes can't while you're here keep the
08:04cameras rolling make sure you keep your audio going because I guarantee you're going to get more on
08:09there than just what you're catching with me
08:17the mischievous child spirits soon find a new playmate and begin to toy with the other owner of
08:22the theater james smith is my best friend from third grade he's also the local mayor here in
08:28cynthiana he's just all-around good guy up until recently james was the biggest skeptic who didn't
08:34believe in any of the paranormal or the ghost stuff at all but he's now a believer that there's something
08:39at the ross opera house one day when james is alone in the theater he has an experience that
08:48challenges his disbelief in the paranormal while i was walking into the balcony one day i came down
08:54to the light board so that i could turn on the lights on the stage
08:57and that's when i saw him right down there by the stage was this little boy about nine ten years old
09:09he was so solid and so normal looking that he didn't look out of place
09:17for a moment you think did someone get in the building did someone leave a child in here
09:22well why is this child in here all by himself with no parent
09:35it shocked me it sent chills down my spine
09:40and then he took two or three steps toward the exit door
09:44and before he hit those curtains he just disappeared in the thin air
09:50he had just gone from solid as you and i to
09:53nothing the realization hits you that i've just experienced something paranormal
10:01that's when i turned around and ran as fast as i could out of the building
10:04because it startled me so bad well i heard something but it was like a shift
10:11sounded like something in a chair moving look that hair sticking up in my arms right now
10:16that happens in this building you'll see things out of the corner of your eye
10:19just move and then when you look there won't be anything there
10:25really didn't believe in ghosts i was very much a skeptic but when you see it and when you experience it
10:32with all of your senses there's just no way to deny that there's something paranormal this
10:38mysterious building it's a big building so lots of things can happen anywhere at any time
10:49not long after james's terrifying encounter roger experiences a surge of paranormal activity
10:55on the theater's balcony
10:57so i was up here one night the upstairs of the theater was totally closed off it was almost
11:04impossible to get to there had been some damage to the ceiling in the hallway outside so we've got
11:09it completely blocked off nobody can get up here
11:15so i get the movie started i look out to make sure that it's centered on the screen i make sure that
11:21it's focused and i look over through the doorway
11:28and there's this young child she's dressed in white she's solid high collared dress ruffles on the
11:34sleeve it was victorian in nature
11:39she's walking into the balcony so i go follow her down
11:42so i'll come into here i get to about right here
11:54nobody's up here but me
12:03the electricity in that balcony my hair literally stood up on my arms and on the back of my neck
12:09the room was full of electrical energy you could feel it
12:17it's building this building it was almost like it was if you stayed here too long it would blow the
12:21circuit it was terrifying
12:39i have to get out of the balcony and i actually run
12:56do you feel anything right now i can feel something right now not quite as heavy but yeah
13:00there's somebody here with us she knows we're talking about her she's here you can feel it or i can feel it
13:09the spirit spirits are able to manipulate electrical fields they create a static field when you hear
13:15about hauntings where people are having this literal hair racing experience that's an effect
13:21of static electricity them creating that static field
13:29roger and james are learning to live with the child spirits haunting the theater
13:33cynthiana is a close-knit town and the locals look out for each other even if they've crossed over to
13:40the other side the building that was here prior uh burned there's some theory that although we can't be
13:46a hundred percent sure is that the spirits of the children who haunt this place come from that tragedy
13:50we figure although it can be a little bit creepy they probably have as much of a right to be here as we
13:55do they they've been here longer than we have i do know that theaters are typically happy places so if
14:04if i had passed on and i was looking for some place just to hang out around happy people a theater is
14:10where i would go to hang out it gives you a little bit of comfort knowing there's something after this
14:16life i've experienced enough here to know that we don't necessarily end when we take that last breath
14:22so in that sense it has changed me across the border in tottenham ontario child spirits play sinister
14:34games with the town's residents
14:44tottenham is a charming small town with a history steeped in traditional family values
14:49i really like the community around here i like how it's a small town i've lived in tottenham my
14:54whole life um the best part is the nature it's beautiful everybody here is nice everybody knows
15:01each other it's just a really quaint town tottenham has a very unique history our town was founded
15:11by a single mother with six kids who arrived here in the 1860s from armagh county ireland
15:19the government announced that there was cheap lots of land so she told her sons you go and get
15:25that land she gave them the money and our town is named after her despite being a warm welcoming family
15:34town the streets of tottenham echo with the cries of past terror
15:38tottenham's history includes many tragic events massive fire train derailments and gruesome murder
15:50suicides these left an imprint on the history of the town forever
15:57i believe tottenham is haunted just weird things that happen here all the time and you just feel a
16:03presence sometimes i've heard lots of ghost stories the buildings in particular super super old i'd say
16:12it's haunted one building holds many secrets a century-old property that now contains the victorian
16:22charm antique store the historic house is built on land that was originally part of an expansive pioneer
16:29farm with a chilling past local legend has it that a little girl was drowned by her father in the
16:39bathtub in the house and now her spirit roams that entire area that would have been her playground her
16:46backyard before it was all developed in situations where you have a murder or a sudden loss of life
16:54where someone just wasn't done living yet it really roots them to that physical location so they come
16:59back again and again sometimes reliving that traumatic experience irene ferguson has owned the antique store
17:06for over 13 years and her granddaughter-in-law jesse stratton lives in the apartment above the shop
17:14thank you so much for having us jesse you're welcome i'm happy to have you guys here when i first
17:19walked in here it was a homey feel definitely very welcoming but you always had that kind of feeling
17:24that something might have been a bit different here
17:29like there was more than meets the eye i guess is what you could say
17:40not long after moving into the apartment with her infant daughter
17:44jesse soon realizes another child spirit is in the house with them in the front of the house we have
17:51a storefront that's the antique store that our grandmother owns in the back we have a kitchen
17:57so every evening i come down here to prepare a bottle for chloe for bed it's part of our nightly routine
18:04this evening i noticed on the floor another bottle was sitting there i pay no mind to it
18:13because i'm used to seeing things like that all the time
18:23after i finish preparing her bottle i turn around to leave and as i am walking
18:34i hear the bottle tip over and start rolling
18:44i see it
18:57it ends up doing the same thing again
18:59back to where it was originally there's no slope in the floor there's no reason it would have moved
19:06that way itself it was pretty freaky it gave me a very uneasy feeling
19:15all i can think is there's definitely a presence in this room i gotta get out of there
19:19to me it almost seemed childlike as if possibly a kid was playing a joke on me or just playing with it
19:29and so you then actually verified this by reviewing the camera footage in the kitchen
19:36yes so we have a camera here in the kitchen to watch over the house the store just as a precautionary
19:43you can go back in the footage and it actually has caught on the recording this bottle falling and moving
19:55i think it was something childlike for sure i didn't feel like anything evil i felt more just
20:01playful but still definitely cause for concern
20:04little did jesse know irene had concerns of her own about the strange activity in the house
20:18i believe this house is haunted there's a feeling there's an energy the fact it's an antique store
20:24things come in on a daily basis some stuff has energies attached to it it's unavoidable
20:29and whenever there was storms rolling in we've always noticed a lot of weird things one night
20:39she finds herself in a tug of war with the other side i was closing up for the night and there was a
20:45storm coming in i was standing right here hello
20:52the voice was crystal clear so i made my way over to the front door it opened up okay
21:08hello there's nobody
21:14i went to close it
21:15but it felt like there was somebody behind it pulling it back and there was a tug of war that
21:24went back and forth finally the door just ripped right out of my hand
21:45it was a dark shadow goes up the stairs and at that point i started shaking i realized that
21:52there's something here it was weird tapping on the walls upstairs
22:00radios playing
22:06doors opening and closing
22:15it scared the heck out of me and that is the only time in 13 years that i have run from the store
22:25storms are a climate and environmental confluence so even from a physical and scientific standpoint
22:32there's a lot of energy interacting and being exchanged we get thunder and lightning it can shake
22:37the ground so it makes sense again in a spiritual realm energy can get stirred or activated based on a
22:43storm how do you feel being right here at the threshold in the stairs now i'm definitely a
22:48little nervous standing here right now it's definitely a dark presence and yes it's troublesome
23:00the presence lurking in the house seems drawn to jesse and she soon has her most terrifying encounter
23:06yet if you could walk us through that night when you're up in the bathroom getting ready for bed
23:15when you come up the stairs from the uh store there's a bedroom to your right and the bathroom is to
23:22your left
23:27so one evening i was in the bathroom here getting ready for bed while chloe was sleeping in her bedroom
23:33and i was standing at this vanity looking here in the mirror brushing my teeth
23:51the energy in the room seems to grow heavy
23:55i look up to the mirror the closet behind me is open i feel like something's watching me
24:10i see a dark shadow standing in it
24:25it came at me and i can feel a cold hand against my back
24:40i panic i bolt out of there as fast as possible to make sure chloe is safe above all else
24:46it's very unsettling it's not something you want to experience especially in your own home
24:59yeah for sure it's a place you're supposed to be safest it's definitely makes you worried about
25:07what it could do we have done protection spells to protect ourselves from it like we have literally
25:15like crystals sitting in here to help it with the energies that we think have been in here before
25:28the unsettling energy in the house grows stronger and soon the child's spirit reveals itself to
25:34another member of the family irene's other granddaughter amy i was standing behind the
25:40counter working on some jewelry that my grandmother had me pricing
25:45and i feel like something's wrong i felt like i had something watching me
25:54and i started scanning the room trying to see if i could see anything
25:58i realized that there was a little girl standing off in the doorway kind of blurry
26:09so i could tell that wasn't a natural human tilted my head to see what she was doing
26:14she did the same exact thing
26:21i turned and i started walking down here
26:30and as i got to about here
26:33i just ran down the hallway she was gone i have had it happen multiple times it still surprises me
26:45but now it's like okay yeah it's happened but why is it happening
26:52the child's spirit continues to come and go but irene and jesse love their home
26:57and won't be driven out by a mischievous spirit why do you stay it becomes a part of your life
27:04we have a really deep deep connection with this house and that is part of the reason we're still
27:08here to walk away would hurt i'm not ready to walk away this place definitely uh is sentimental
27:16to the family we have a lot of history here sometimes again it's uneasy but i've come accustomed
27:24to some of it where i'm like oh it's just she's letting us know that hey i'm still here i'm still
27:29watching you i just want to know that you know i'm here still too
27:43meanwhile in america some child spirits aren't quite what they seem
27:54in america salt lake city utah is known as the historic crossroads of the american west
28:02founded in 1847 by mormons fleeing religious persecution in the east the thriving city has a
28:08growing population who loves its vibrant culture and stunning natural surroundings salt lake city
28:14has a little bit of everything you have museums you have the mountains closed i've never been anywhere
28:20like salt lake city it's kind of its own little bubble it's beautiful
28:26well it's a mormon pioneer town all grown up in the 21st century the great divide between the mormons and
28:33the gentiles makes salt lake city in utah unique the great divide has caused the city to suffer through a
28:43traumatic and fractured past so salt lake is filled with a deep history it was both a spiritual home base
28:53for a church and a wild west town the mormons established the city as a safe space to practice
29:00their strong religious values but it didn't turn out to be the perfect zion they had expected the problem
29:06it was also located just perfectly on the train to the gold rush you had miners and cowboys these
29:14other secular settlers coming through who had a very different idea of what the salt lake valley
29:18should be there was brothels there was gambling there was drinking there was a lot of things that
29:23the mormons themselves did not believe in and that led to a strong cultural conflict
29:27one such conflict was the mount meadows massacre in 1857 a large group of pioneers heading west to
29:37california camped near the city threatened by memories of their previous persecution the mormon
29:44militia slaughtered 120 of the party's members leaving only 17 children as survivors
29:50and then there's so many untold stories in the conflict between the secular settlers and the
29:59mormon settlers stories of heartache and persecution from a group that had been persecuted themselves
30:05and there would have been a great deal of of conflict and trauma in that space
30:11today in salt lake city the deep influence of religion is inescapable
30:16salt lake city is an area where there's a lot of religious presence a lot of sacred spaces like
30:22churches and temples salt lake city would be a liminal space which is kind of broadcasting
30:28transmitting a lot of spiritual energy definitely something that would attract the attention of different
30:34spirits and many locals feel these spirits all across the town
30:40growing up here in salt lake city over and over again you hear stories of it being haunted
30:49you can't escape them salt lake is most definitely haunted
30:55this is a spiritual place we all believe like energy moves through us it guides us a lot of people feel
31:01energy here there are places with a lot of history and there's definitely some trapped spiritual energy there
31:10so exactly where Ahhh
31:13Darcy Benenkosa grew up in a Mormon community just outside salt lake city and as a child dreamt of living
31:20in one of its large historic homes when i really decided to make salt lake city my home it was because
31:28i wanted to know my community i wanted to feel a sense of belonging and i wanted to have
31:35the nicest people around be my neighbors.
31:39Everybody who has bought a home here
31:41sees it not just as a home,
31:43but a piece of history to be preserved.
31:47So when this one opened up,
31:48there wasn't a doubt in my mind
31:49that this was where I was meant to live,
31:52that this was my dream house.
31:55Not long after moving into her dream home,
31:58Darcy realizes she's not the only one in the house.
32:01When I moved into the house,
32:02I started to do some renovations,
32:04and one day I was downstairs.
32:09I had the sense that I was not alone.
32:15I heard something.
32:17It sounded like a little girl crying.
32:22I thought maybe it was the neighbors,
32:24maybe it was something else.
32:28But the more I listened,
32:30I knew it was coming from upstairs.
32:34So I went upstairs
32:35and kind of followed the noise.
32:42I could hear the crying
32:44coming from the other side of the closet.
32:50There was a real sense of her
32:54just feeling lost and scared.
32:56when I opened it,
33:09there was nothing there.
33:16And I just thought,
33:17oh my God,
33:18I have bought a haunted house.
33:20I decided to call the previous owner
33:27to see if I could get some answers.
33:29There's something going on in this hall closet.
33:32He said,
33:33actually,
33:33before I made it into a closet,
33:35it was the entrance to a little girl's room.
33:37And when I knocked down that wall,
33:39there were a bunch of little girl's clothes
33:42from who knows how many decades ago.
33:45He said he got pretty scared with that.
33:48Immediately,
33:48I knew that was the ghost
33:49that I was hearing.
33:52But there was a sadness in her cry
33:54that I cannot still to this day ever forget.
33:59The sound of somebody crying,
34:02that to me is very much like
34:04trying to get somebody's attention
34:06because crying is very evocative.
34:08We even have instincts as parents
34:11that when we hear a child cry,
34:13our physiology reacts to that.
34:16Either a child is trying to get the attention
34:19of somebody in the space
34:20or a spirit that's trying to mimic
34:22or present as a child
34:23is trying to get somebody's attention.
34:25I just had the sense of dread that I knew
34:39there were other things in the house with me.
34:45I would see shadows move.
34:48Things were moved, shifted.
34:49The old sink, it would fill up with water.
34:59I know I did not turn on water.
35:02So I open it up, let it drain.
35:12The next day, it's full again.
35:16I never knew when it was going to happen.
35:17Sometimes once a week,
35:19sometimes three times a day.
35:23And I noticed noises.
35:28Hello?
35:30Little kids chattering.
35:32Who's there?
35:34One night, Darcy is shaken
35:36by a close encounter with the child spirits
35:38whose unrelenting presence
35:40she now feels in every room.
35:44This is my bedroom.
35:45And at the time,
35:47it was like the only place
35:48I could find sanctuary in the house.
35:51I'm lying there in bed.
35:58I heard footsteps
35:59running up the steps
36:00as fast as they could.
36:09Bam!
36:09And the door shakes.
36:15It was like somebody banged into it,
36:17like they were trying to open it.
36:26And the door never opened.
36:29I think it's over.
36:30The bed starts to shake
36:37on every corner of these young boys' fears of children.
36:42That just took it to a whole new level of fear.
36:47I just didn't know what to do.
36:49I just started using my voice.
36:50You have no power here.
36:53You need to leave.
36:56This is my house.
36:57This is my house.
36:59Get out.
37:04Go away!
37:10It took a while,
37:12but eventually they left.
37:13It was almost the final straw.
37:16These spirits of children
37:17were really trying to intimidate me.
37:19They were dark,
37:20and they wanted me gone.
37:22And I thought,
37:22this can't get any worse.
37:24And then it did.
37:32The child's spirits terrorizing her home
37:35soon reveal their true selves to Darcy.
37:38I was here on the couch.
37:43I usually like to end my evenings here.
37:45The fire's going.
37:46Everything felt cozy and beautiful.
37:48And then suddenly,
37:49the energy shifted.
37:51I saw a shadow start
38:07to come right across the wall here.
38:12I stayed deathly still.
38:15And then it was joined by a second one.
38:18They were very tall,
38:19eight or nine feet.
38:21They weren't human.
38:25And all of a sudden,
38:26I saw the children
38:27inside the shadowy figures.
38:33I could not understand
38:34in a language I don't know.
38:41And then all of a sudden,
38:43they were gone.
38:48Terrified by the shape-shifting spirits,
38:50Darcy decides she needs help.
38:53Buying this home was my dream.
38:55And even though it came
38:57with so many problems and issues,
39:00I was not ready to give it up.
39:05The first person I call with anything
39:07is my sister, April.
39:10When Darcy needs me,
39:11I'm there by her side.
39:12It doesn't matter what time of day,
39:13I'm there.
39:13When I told her about the spirits,
39:17she immediately said,
39:19with intention,
39:20with tools,
39:21with sound,
39:22there are a lot of different rituals.
39:24It had gone on way too long.
39:26So we just,
39:26we had to do something about it.
39:28So when April came over,
39:36we heard knocking
39:38coming from the basement.
39:40We had to get some answers.
39:42I could not go down there by myself.
39:44The basement is dark.
39:55There's one small light overhead.
40:00And we pause.
40:02Can't even breathe in.
40:04And we just look around,
40:07searching for what's causing the noise.
40:10I feel nervous.
40:15I don't know if I can take
40:16any more ghosts,
40:18any more weird energies
40:20coming at me.
40:29And then there's just a noise.
40:34And it's coming from under the stairs.
40:40And then April saw old children's toys.
40:57And I knew a child had been
41:09under these stairs.
41:23April looked at me.
41:24She said,
41:25we need to cleanse this.
41:27One of the ways to cleanse the house
41:41is with intention,
41:43with tools,
41:44with sound.
41:45There are a lot of different rituals
41:47and rites,
41:47and we tried them all.
41:49In the name of Jesus Christ,
41:51I command you to leave.
41:52I send you to the light with love.
41:54You are no longer welcome here
41:55in this house.
41:57With all the light and love,
42:00you are no longer welcome here.
42:02We send you back to the light
42:04from where you came,
42:05and you take you,
42:07all your darkness,
42:08and go towards the light.
42:11We got holy water
42:12and spread it around.
42:15Rattles to move the spirits,
42:18getting rid of all that stuck energy
42:20that just seemed to be trapped.
42:21This is my sister's house,
42:26and you need to leave.
42:27I command you to leave.
42:33You are no longer welcome here.
42:35This is my home,
42:36my energy,
42:37and I reclaim it now.
42:38There are certainly forces
42:51on the other side
42:52that are responsible
42:53for helping different entities
42:55ascend to a higher level
42:56of consciousness.
42:57When you have two people
42:59coming together
42:59for a singular purpose,
43:01it's definitely magnifying
43:02that energy.
43:03So where you have people
43:04engaging in spiritual practices
43:06to draw evil out of a home,
43:08it's that much more powerful
43:09with two.
43:10After we started cleansing the house
43:18and getting rid of these spirits,
43:21the house had a lighter energy.
43:24I felt a sense of guilt
43:25sometimes getting rid
43:27of these children,
43:29like, oh, maybe they need
43:30a place to be,
43:31but I could not live with them.
43:33They were disrupting
43:34my entire life,
43:35and so I know
43:36that they needed to go,
43:37and the thing that always
43:38brought me comfort is
43:39there's a better place
43:41for them to be.
43:45It's funny how the one
43:46sconce there seems to flicker.
43:48You like to flicker sometimes
43:49when you talk about these things?
43:50Don't come back,
43:51little children.
43:52We got rid of you.
