Transcript
00:00I think every hometown has its hauntings.
00:15There are a lot of ghosts here in Hamptonville.
00:18I was overcome with this overwhelming cold sadness.
00:24Whatever I'm looking at, I know that it's not human.
00:28I feel something in here.
00:33Something creepy.
00:36Very creepy.
00:48This place is so dead.
00:51Across America, many idyllic towns and cities conceal a dark past.
01:03Amongst the living, tortured spirits lurk.
01:07Souls warped and twisted by trauma and pain, doomed to suffer for eternity.
01:16An hour outside central Manhattan lies the village of Warwick, New York.
01:25A charming community filled with historic properties, surrounded by apple orchards and rolling fields.
01:34Warwick has always been just a great kind of farm town.
01:40Very peaceful and quiet and quaint.
01:42Kind of like a Norman Rockwell-type painting.
01:46Warwick has its own special character to it, its own special tone.
01:53It has its own little energetic pull.
01:57But beneath its quaint exterior, dark energy permeates the land.
02:06This area had been inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years.
02:10And in the late 17th century, European settlers began establishing new communities here.
02:16By the time of the American Revolution, almost all the local indigenous population had disappeared.
02:26There are these spaces in North America that are chronically haunted.
02:32Where there have been massacres.
02:34Where there have been events that have occurred between settlers and the indigenous people.
02:39Where there was a huge loss of life.
02:42There's a stain that exists there.
02:45The fabric has been torn by the violets.
02:49And I think that this particular space is one of those.
02:55Just outside the village stands one of Warwick's most iconic historic buildings.
03:00The Vale House.
03:05An original settler farmhouse, the building was owned by the Vale family from the 1920s to the late 70s.
03:11It was a fine federal house built in about anywhere from 1790 to 1810.
03:18But there was a lot of history to this house, good and bad.
03:22The man who owned it was a fellow by the name of Roy Vale.
03:27He was a master gunsmith.
03:32And he had a very successful antique business out of this big old house.
03:37Local legend says that one day in the 1970s, a farmer working in his field unearthed some unusual urns.
03:47And brought them to Roy Vale for inspection.
03:52Mr. Vale said they are indeed very, very early.
03:56These are sacred and should not be touched.
04:01And if they're brought to the surface, they should be immediately buried again because they carry a curse.
04:07But against his better judgment, Roy sold the vases.
04:12And then started the troubles for his family.
04:16Horrific incidents befell each of the gunsmith's family members, one by one.
04:22His sister who lived down the road was murdered.
04:25Her dogs, their throats were slashed.
04:29His brother drove his truck out in the middle of the field and set himself on fire with kerosene.
04:38His mother supposedly fell down a well.
04:46So there were all of these strange things that happened.
04:49And it left a kind of aura over the house.
04:53There's a tendency for tortured spirits to attach themselves to objects.
05:00And once they attach to objects, they sometimes make that leap to people.
05:04And in the case of Roy, he may very well have something attached to him.
05:09Simply from having mishandled these pieces of pottery.
05:18Roy Vale passed away in 1979.
05:21And a few years later, the house was bought by a local family who turned the heritage property into a restaurant,
05:27now known as Silvio's Villa.
05:31Today, the restaurant is run by Frank and Valentina Muto.
05:37Valentina interview, take two mark.
05:39My name is Valentina Muto. I grew up in South Italy.
05:44Frank is my husband.
05:46We own the restaurant, it's been 14 years now.
05:51It's been a family owned and operated restaurant for over 30 years.
05:55My father and his brother, Benny and Silvio, opened it up in 92, 93.
06:00When I got here, it was a little bit strange in the beginning.
06:11The first time I walked in here, I felt like there was something in the place.
06:19Something creepy.
06:21Very creepy.
06:22Very creepy.
06:27Before I moved here, I did the not-believing ghost.
06:31A few weeks after starting at the restaurant, a series of terrifying events shatter everything Valentina thought she knew.
06:39It was a very busy night.
06:49I was here waiting for the drinks when the bartender asks me for the bottle of vodka.
06:53I see the bottle, it's right there.
06:54And he says, no, the bottle of vodka, it's not there.
07:08I say, it's right there.
07:12Behind you.
07:13And then all of the sudden, the bottle flows off of the shelf, hitting the bartender.
07:20And the bottle shatters on the floor.
07:24I was pretty shocked at what I just saw.
07:29I cannot believe what just happened, and I didn't even know how to explain it.
07:34Having a bottle fly across the room like that indicates a negative energy, but also a violent spirit.
07:45There's clearly the torture spirit that wanted her attention, but in an aggressive manner.
07:51This could be a way of connecting with a human, trying to let her know that the spirit is there.
08:04The tortured spirit in the restaurant didn't stop there.
08:09A few days later, when she is in the bar, alone, Valentina is seized with fear.
08:21So, we were finishing the night.
08:28I'm putting everything away. Frank already went upstairs.
08:31I feel something that's in here.
08:42I heard steps.
08:45These footsteps like very clear.
08:53I felt a presence.
08:56It's like very big male presence.
09:01When I go to turn the light,
09:08I feel someone grab me from my shoulder.
09:12But when I turn around,
09:17there is nobody there.
09:19I don't know what to think.
09:21I don't know what is going on.
09:23I was speechless. I couldn't even talk.
09:25So, I feel like they wanted me to know that they were here.
09:36The occurrences in the restaurant escalate,
09:39and the spirits begin to torment other members of the Muto family.
09:43I was up in the attic, tidying up for the season.
09:47I was all alone.
09:49And I was on my way downstairs.
09:52As soon as I put my hand on the railing,
09:58my leg literally went pins and needles, froze up on me.
10:04I got really cold.
10:07My body froze.
10:08I was overcome with this overwhelming cold sadness.
10:19I looked over,
10:21and above my head,
10:25over the single doorway,
10:28there's a sign that says Roy Vale.
10:31I had never seen this sign, ever.
10:37It really freaked me out.
10:39We've owned the restaurant over 20 years,
10:42and not anyone in my family, my wife,
10:45any other random employee that had ever been in the attic,
10:48had ever seen that sign.
10:50As scary as it was for me,
10:52I kind of felt that it was a sign.
10:54What exactly that means, I don't know.
10:56The spirit was trying to get their attention,
10:58and they're saying, I'm here.
11:01I want to reach out, and I want to communicate with you,
11:04but my options are limited.
11:06Just imagine how frustrating it is.
11:08You can't communicate with people,
11:10even though you can clearly see them,
11:12they don't understand you.
11:14And in this case, you have a spirit that is a tortured spirit.
11:17That level of frustration is obviously ramped way up,
11:22because you're carrying this anguish, this despair, this sadness,
11:25and now no one is aware that you're there.
11:30Roy veils paranoia over not returning the sacred urns,
11:34and his family's subsequent horrific deaths convinced him that he was cursed.
11:40Rumor has it he was filled with so much pain and guilt,
11:44that one night, Roy took his own life with one of his guns.
11:47Valentina soon realizes that the guests are being affected by this tortured spirit too.
12:00So I'm bringing the customer to the table, they pick the table down here.
12:05And when they sit down, I take their drink order.
12:14When I come back with their drink, I see the lady is completely pale.
12:21She goes to me, there is a man right there staring at me.
12:25So I look behind me, towards table 24, and I don't see anything.
12:39And she keeps saying there is this man looking at me.
12:44And I was like, I wish I can help, I don't know what to say.
12:49The lady is completely pale and scared.
12:52Then they just left the money at the table and they just left.
12:57I never saw that money again.
13:02Table 24 is where Roy veils bedroom used to be.
13:10And it's also where he took his own life.
13:15When Frank's parents bought the place, the bullet was still in the ceiling.
13:23They keep patching it up the bullet hole all the time.
13:27But the hole always comes back.
13:32The act of taking his life, I think, has tethered Roy to that space.
13:38That is why people see him there.
13:41He's not choosing to be there.
13:43He's tied there and is continuously, I'm sure, tortured by his own anguish.
13:49I think, psychologically, Roy probably shoulders a lot of guilt for the events that unfolded within his family.
13:56And in his mind, the cause is not doing the right thing with these pieces of pottery.
14:01He feels as though he is cursed and that that curse is something that now continues.
14:05Valentina and Frank continue to be plagued by strange events, but are determined to stay strong.
14:19We put our blood and sweat and tears into this restaurant.
14:27We learn to coexist with the spirits that they are here.
14:32And we are not afraid.
14:33And we are not afraid.
14:36We will hold on to this place as much as we can.
14:40It's part of our family.
14:41It's our life and we will never give up.
14:43Meanwhile, a few states away, other tortured spirits must endure their eternal pain.
15:01In rural North Carolina lies the farming community of Hamptonville, a small town established in the early 1800s.
15:08Hamptonville, it's just a good place to live.
15:13People are friendly.
15:14It's just down home country.
15:19Hamptonville is very quiet.
15:21A lot of pastures rolling, hills.
15:27We have a lot of churches.
15:32A lot of cemeteries.
15:33But the peaceful small town atmosphere conceals a history full of pain, intensified by its remote and undisturbed location.
15:48Mark Hagar is an historian, an author, who's written a number of books on the area's tragic past.
15:54Hamptonville is geographically cut off because of being between two river systems.
16:00It's very difficult to get into them.
16:03Once you're here, you're here.
16:08A lot of the time, when you do have the presence of water, it seems to really embolden spirits.
16:14So the fact that Hamptonville is right in the middle of these bodies of water, I think that does lend a lot of extra energy to those spirits that might be there.
16:24In the early 20th century, the area was ravaged by a deadly disease.
16:31Over 14,000 people perished across the state.
16:35And in Hamptonville, entire families were found dead in their homes.
16:39The great influenza pandemic of 1918 devastated this region.
16:47A lot of those meals were turned into making wood for coffins and people lining up their horse teams to get them for family members who had succumbed to the influenza pandemic.
17:00I couldn't imagine the trauma that would be in those families.
17:13On the edge of town stands a large brick building, the site of the former Trevette Clinic.
17:19Built in 1932 by local doctor William Trevette, it was the only hospital for miles around.
17:29The clinic housed x-ray equipment, a surgery room, and also provided controversial treatment for those with mental illness.
17:37And then in six years, it was over. The doctor contracted pneumonia and died. With his passing, the clinic was gone.
17:51The negative energy that is present at that hospital, you know, over the course of time, it does leave an imprint on a space.
17:56Given the fact that there's so much negative emotion, so much sadness, so much despair, that creates a bit of a breeding ground for spirits.
18:06Not only those who called that space home from the moment they left this physical realm, but also for other spirits who might be traveling through.
18:14They may become connected to that space.
18:17When Dr. Trevette died, the hospital ceased operations.
18:21Over the years, the facility fell into disrepair, but many believe that the building still contains the pain and agony felt by the souls who died at the hospital.
18:34You can feel the spirits. A lot of people might think that that's a little weird.
18:39Not necessarily a physical presence, but it's almost like you can still, you can still feel troubles from the past.
18:47There are a lot of ghosts here in Hamptonville. The clinic has a lot of history with ghosts.
18:57Doug Gallagher now owns the clinic property and has lived in the area all his life.
19:02As a child, we would drive through Hamptonville coming to church.
19:11Just driving by the property. It was kind of shaded, hidden in the trees.
19:18I never dreamed that someday I'll be the owner of this property.
19:21In 2007, Doug and his friend, Tim Trevette, a distant relation of the former doctor, bought the decaying property to save it from demolition and fulfill their dream of maintaining a plant nursery.
19:39The building had really, it had gone downhill. It needed a lot of work.
19:46When I first walked into the house, there was a feeling that you were being watched.
19:52It wasn't something that you could put your finger on, but you knew you weren't alone.
19:59Doug and Tim start renovating the building, but are soon plagued by unexplained events.
20:04I was coming downstairs, and I heard a muffled sound like voices in another room.
20:23I started looking around to try to see where the voices were coming from.
20:30There's nobody in the house.
20:31There's nobody in the house.
20:40I heard something upstairs moving.
20:46And then I hear an elderly woman's voice.
20:49I couldn't believe what I had actually just heard.
21:01She was actually talking to me, letting me know that she was with me.
21:05Renovation, remodeling, any sort of change to a space will absolutely generate paranormal activity because this was their home.
21:20This is where they were daily.
21:22And so for someone to come in and start to adjust things, you know, it's going to upset them.
21:26Immediately the spirit wanted to make it clear that they were there and they made it the point to say we're here and not I am here.
21:34So that lets me know that there's multiple spirits in the space.
21:37It's no surprise that once Doug started to do renovation that the paranormal activity increased.
21:42When this was the clinic, the room at the top of the stairs to the right was the operating room.
21:49And the operating room, they did all kinds of surgeries.
21:54The operating table would have probably been right in this area.
21:59And then there is one spot of blood on the floor at the foot of the bed that remains.
22:16In the operating room, Doug finds a number of disturbing medical remains that the former occupants left behind.
22:22This is one of the needles that we found on the property.
22:35There were body parts that had been preserved in jars.
22:39It's kind of creepy if you think about it.
22:41The spirits at the clinic are determined to make themselves known.
22:55A week later, Tim is alone and preparing to leave for the night.
23:01I just finished fixing the gate and getting ready to close for the evening.
23:11And I just get this weird feeling, like a real eerie feeling somebody was watching me or something.
23:32I looked up toward the house and these images in the window.
23:39What is that?
23:42Then I realized it was like people just staring down at me from the window.
23:48My heart starts racing and I feel really nervous.
23:52My face was starting to get really warm.
23:55I just wondered if they were going to stay in the house or could they actually come out.
24:00It was just kind of eerie, so I just got in the car and left.
24:04The dark energy in the house intensifies.
24:17And one day, while working in the basement, Doug finds himself bound with fear.
24:22Most of the time, we didn't go down to the basement by ourselves.
24:28It was a really creepy area.
24:30This is really dark and musty.
24:33I was still feeling in the basement.
24:35This is probably one of the scarier places in the house.
24:41So we'll go downstairs and let you see.
24:45You may get a little nervous, so just be cautious.
24:49There's a lot of memories in this space, and there are probably not a lot of good memories because it was in this corner where people were chained to the wall when they were being treated for any kind of mental illness.
25:07The shackles, there were sets.
25:11They set on this wall, and then another set on this wall where the people were actually chained hands and feet to the wall.
25:25So why did you take down the shackles?
25:26You could almost feel the way the people would have felt when they were being restrained, the sadness, and maybe the anger.
25:38But the act of removing the chains from the wall sparks one of the most terrifying moments Doug has ever experienced.
25:46We're working in the basement, removing the chains, and something just doesn't feel right.
25:51It's just a heavy feeling that you know that you're not alone, that there's something with you.
26:03And then things got really strange.
26:13I could see shadows moving.
26:15Suddenly, I'm surrounded by entities.
26:40And, needless to say, I've never climbed those stairs faster.
26:43These shackles would have held, at some point, patients.
26:48People who, perhaps, were dealing with mental health issues.
26:51There would have been a lot of fear, a lot of anguish.
26:54It would have felt like they were being tortured.
26:58A shackle that's brushing against the arm of somebody who is in a very deep, dark, emotional state,
27:05it's going to pick up some of that energy.
27:06It's going to hold it.
27:07And Doug was feeling all of that.
27:09The spirits become increasingly displeased at the changes Doug is making to their home.
27:15And one evening, escalate things to the next level.
27:19I come upstairs.
27:21I'm standing here.
27:22And it was like something just kind of drew me towards the doorway.
27:35And I see dark shadow in the doorway.
27:38It's the size of a big man.
27:39Whatever I'm looking at, I know that it's not human.
27:44The shadow races toward me.
27:49It's up in my face.
27:52And I feel a tightness in my chest.
28:01I can barely breathe.
28:03Like I'm getting ready to pass out or something.
28:08The feeling was just really strange.
28:11I think they were using that opportunity to possess me.
28:15I just felt like I needed to get away from whatever was trying to attach itself to me.
28:28Tim knew that there was something going on.
28:34You okay?
28:35As quickly as it started, the dizziness went away.
28:46Whatever had been trying to attach itself to me was gone.
28:52When it comes to feeling possessed, it's basically the spirit trying to control you.
28:58Trying to envelop your body.
29:00You feel like you are losing control.
29:01You feel sick, dizzy.
29:03It's horrible.
29:05There was someone that wanted to inflict their pain on Doug.
29:08And he was absolutely picking up on that.
29:10The type of spirits that are there with him, these are tortured spirits.
29:14There is a high chance that they're going to inflict some sort of pain.
29:20Or inflict energy towards him that, you know, might harm him and his family.
29:25If someone like Doug decides that they want to stay in that space,
29:27he needs to make it clear that he is in control and that is his property.
29:31Doug and Tim continue to experience the dark entities in the clinic,
29:36but choose to endure the fear that overcomes them.
29:40We really haven't tried to get rid of these entities.
29:44This is their home.
29:46They were here before we were.
29:47When you're here for a while, it's like the place becomes a part of you.
29:53Some of the spirits that are still with us feel the same way.
29:57So who knows down the road, I may be one of the spirits in the house.
30:04Elsewhere in America, some tortured spirits tragically fill an entire town with their dark energy.
30:12On the southern shore of Lake Erie lies the small town of Euclid, Ohio.
30:25For 200 years, Euclid has been a growing middle class town filled with hardworking residents.
30:30It's very blue collar family oriented. There's a lot to do. We've got the lake right by us.
30:37It's just a very nice, comfortable town.
30:40Euclid was first settled in the late 1790s.
30:45We're a very proud Midwestern hardworking city.
30:49We're happy with our lake in our backyard.
30:51That's like a little taste of luxury for us hardworking people here.
30:54But Euclid's past hasn't always been so luxurious.
30:59The city grew so rapidly in the early 20th century that new homes and railroads had to be built anywhere they could.
31:07Even on already occupied land.
31:10Early settlers had multiple family burial plots, which were swiftly built over, with no regard for those laid to rest there.
31:19Burial grounds are sacred, and to have someone bulldozing or building property over sacred land, or disturb it in any way, can absolutely conjure up tortured souls and paranormal activity.
31:35The newly expanded city continued to attract dark energy.
31:41And in the 1930s, a string of horrific murders occurred along Euclid's picturesque lakeshore.
31:50The torso murders took place in the general Euclid area between 1935 to 1938.
31:58There were at least 13 victims.
32:01All of them were decapitated and mutilated.
32:03The decapitated torsos were unidentifiable.
32:11Body parts, limbs, and organs were found along the train tracks, with torsos even washing up on Euclid Beach.
32:19People were scared from it, definitely traumatized from it.
32:23The torso murder was never found.
32:25The case, even today, still remains unsolved.
32:27The victims of these crimes, their spirits very likely remain in those spaces.
32:33A lot of that fear and anguish probably continued in the spirit world.
32:37They would have met their end abruptly, so they are now kind of wandering, you know, looking for an explanation.
32:46Local residents still feel the impact of the horrific past, experiencing dark energies in locations all across the city today.
32:54Certain parts of Euclid can be haunted.
32:57At Sam's Park.
33:01The road that goes down to the pier.
33:04Like, weird noises that comes out of the woods.
33:08It can be some good spirits, it can be some bad spirits.
33:12It can be some spirits that's been tortured just trying to get your attention.
33:16So, Euclid may be haunted.
33:20Historical misery and economic conflict can lead to someone who walked these grounds years ago still having some scores to settle.
33:31Maria Miller grew up in Ohio, and like many hardworking residents, fell in love with Euclid's beautiful beaches and affordable family homes.
33:44Five years ago, she and her partner Mark happily moved into what they thought was their dream house.
33:49Mark.
33:53The first time that I saw this house, I fell in love with it.
34:00I love being in my backyard at the end of the day.
34:04When the sun starts going down, I see the light coming through the leaves.
34:09It feels safe and it feels comfortable.
34:12I love being outside here, but inside, that's a totally different story.
34:21Immediately after moving in, Maria begins to feel things aren't quite right.
34:27The atmosphere in the house is really dark and impressive.
34:32When I'm inside this house, I feel very uncomfortable.
34:35I feel as if the walls are closing in on me.
34:42When we moved into this house, my life started to fall apart.
34:49One evening, the oppressive energy in Maria's house takes a dark turn.
34:55I was sitting here, watching TV, just doing my thing.
34:59And I just had this, like, creepy feeling.
35:18Maria.
35:20Out of nowhere, I hear a voice.
35:22Maria.
35:23It sounds like the man is standing a few feet away.
35:31Maria.
35:33It totally unnerved me.
35:42I looked over.
35:44Nobody was there.
35:46I was totally freaked out.
35:49And that voice just startled me to my core.
35:55Maria.
36:01The energy in the house grows stronger.
36:04And soon, an entity reveals itself to Maria.
36:08What happened was, one night after I got out of the tub,
36:12I was getting ready for bed and I always sleep on this side of the bed.
36:15So I crawled in.
36:18And I was asleep.
36:30Then I feel a pressure on the side of the bed.
36:33And I thought Mark was getting into bed.
36:39But I opened my eyes and he wasn't there.
36:47But I have a mirror right there.
36:51I looked in the mirror and there was this man.
36:56It looked like an old man sitting on the end of my bed.
37:04I couldn't see him on the end of the bed.
37:09However, I was able to see his reflection in that mirror.
37:13I knew I had to get out.
37:28So I got up, got out of the room and spent the night on the chair in the living room from that point.
37:35Who do you think that man is?
37:40I honestly, I don't know.
37:42Could have been somebody possibly buried near here.
37:47I know in Euclid there are several areas where they build houses right over top of the cemeteries.
37:52Didn't bother moving anybody that was there.
38:07The tortured spirit from the grave beneath Maria's house grows restless and soon reaches out to her from the other side.
38:14We had just gotten done having dinner and I came up to the sink, put the dishes in the sink and I was standing here.
38:28And I, I heard footsteps.
38:51This hand, it grabbed my shoulder hard and it spun me around.
38:56And there was nobody there.
39:02And I'm just, I'm frozen.
39:05I didn't know what to think, what to do.
39:10I booked out of here. I ran out the door.
39:16Whatever grabbed my shoulder, absolutely it was not friendly.
39:21It crossed a line.
39:22I feel like my personal space has been violated and I can't shake that feeling.
39:32I decided not to tell Mark about what had happened.
39:41I kept it to myself.
39:44I don't want to frighten anybody.
39:45I don't want to bother anybody with it.
39:48But it's, it gets hard.
39:49But unbeknownst to Maria, her partner Mark was also harboring a secret.
40:00Mark reveals he had endured a paranormal encounter of his own.
40:05I was sitting here in the chair.
40:08I started to smell cherry pipe tobacco.
40:10It wasn't coming from outside.
40:11Towards the center of the room.
40:12The odor was even stronger.
40:14And then it was gone.
40:19First thing that comes to mind is paranormal.
40:21I was sitting here in the chair.
40:22I started to smell cherry pipe tobacco.
40:23It wasn't coming from outside.
40:24Towards the center of the room.
40:25The odor was even stronger.
40:30And then it was gone.
40:37First thing that comes to mind is paranormal.
40:41Possibly it was someone who lived in this house at one time.
40:46I just don't know.
40:48The next night, Maria comes face to face with the tortured spirit in her home.
40:54I was sitting right here.
40:59My phone was sitting on that part of the couch.
41:15And I started smelling, it was like pipe smoke, I guess you would say.
41:28Out of nowhere, my phone just flew at me.
41:32And it hit me in my ribs.
41:35And it just, it hurt.
41:37It was like somebody physically picked up that phone.
41:40And just full force, just threw it at me.
41:45And that's when I see this old man standing in front of me, glaring at me.
41:57Like, what are you doing in my space?
42:00If Mark hadn't walked through the door, I don't know what would have happened next.
42:17I told Mark everything.
42:27Mark was amazing.
42:30He believed everything that I just said to him.
42:35He also told me that he had, in fact, smelled the tobacco himself.
42:45I was very surprised when she told me about the experiences that she had.
42:54I didn't know it was as heavy as it actually is for her.
43:00I'm not worried about her at all because she's a strong person.
43:05I'm here for her.
43:08I've got her back.
43:09I'm going to help her with anything she needs with this.
43:11With Mark's support, I have been trying to make things better in the house.
43:17I burn a lot of sage.
43:20I utilize crystals.
43:22I sprinkle salt, which is supposed to help clear houses.
43:27Whatever is happening inside my house, I'm fighting it.
43:30There's no doubt about it.
43:31I'm not going to let it take me over.
43:37Tortured spirits are everywhere.
43:40And it's easy to get sucked into their vortex of guilt and anger and frustration.
43:46When dealing with a tortured spirit, stay positive.
43:50You have to remember that you are in control.
43:52We can give them attention, but not too much.
43:54Otherwise, we'll get dragged down with them.
