00:00Is it just me or is it quite hot in here?
00:02It is now.
00:03Four sets of holiday hosts.
00:05Oh, it's nice and comfy.
00:07Check into each other's places.
00:09Morning.
00:10Welcome to Ashby's.
00:12And check out one another.
00:14I find it very difficult to insult somebody's livelihood.
00:18It doesn't have to be an insult.
00:21Today, hosts are feeling sheepish.
00:24Had you stayed in Shepherd Huts before you had them here?
00:26No.
00:27What?
00:30As they battle.
00:31So I found this dirty mark.
00:33I think it's just really attention to detail.
00:36To be named best value for money.
00:38We got a seven.
00:39I think that's really very mean, actually.
00:47The first visit of the week is to Bondley, Devon and Burnswood Boutique Escapes,
00:53run by married couple Andrew Sinclair-Smith and Diane Coates-Sinclair,
00:58a couple going the distance.
01:00We've been together now for coming up for 20 years.
01:03I'm not sick of you yet.
01:04No?
01:05No.
01:06We just enjoy each other's company so much.
01:08It's really lovely.
01:09Those in it for the long haul can choose from one of two Shepherd's Huts
01:13or a studio apartment for up to £168 a night and meet hosts who've conquered the elements.
01:20You're not slumming it.
01:21It's flushing toilets, hot showers, baths, barbecues.
01:26But at the end of the day, you are in a field.
01:28LAUGHTER
01:29And this pair like to accommodate the artistic.
01:33There are two businesses here.
01:34We have the Sculpture School where we run workshops,
01:37but we also have an accommodation business.
01:40Mainly I'm a sculptor and a handyman.
01:42LAUGHTER
01:42About to arrive are today's first guests.
01:46Would you rather have to fight a hundred horses the size of ducks
01:51or a duck the size of a horse?
01:53I'd probably go for the duck the size of a horse.
01:56I think I could take it.
01:57LAUGHTER
01:58Scrapping and quacking is Mark Bridgen,
02:02owner of the dog at Wingham, Wingham Kent,
02:05who's joined in the competition by General Manager Matt Warren
02:07and their colleagues who work hard and play hard.
02:11I've known Mark for five years.
02:13Mark's a great boss,
02:14but sometimes he likes to hang around after work
02:16and have a few too many drinks and just get in the way a little bit.
02:18LAUGHTER
02:19Those looking for a lock-in
02:22will find eight rooms for up to £380 a night
02:25and meet hosts who believe in their boozer.
02:29Those guests that want more than just a night's stay,
02:31they've got a pub with local, real ale, restaurant-quality food.
02:36Just a fantastic package.
02:38And when it comes to staying away,
02:40they expect their hosts to turn on the waterworks.
02:44For me, one of the biggest things is a powerful shower.
02:46For me, it's all about the bed and the shower and breakfast.
02:50Yeah, we'll be keen to get a cracking breakfast.
02:52Here we are.
02:56One hell of a welcoming committee.
02:57Yeah, I know.
03:00Hello.
03:01Hello, welcome.
03:02I'm Andy, this is my wife, Diane.
03:04Hello, I'm Mark.
03:05And I'm Matt.
03:06Welcome to Burnswood Boutique Escapes.
03:08We've put you in Da Vinci's Den Shepherd's Hut,
03:10which is £148 per night for a minimum of a two-night stay.
03:14With self-catering, there is a breakfast hamper option available.
03:18So the mad butcher's breakfast is £25, the continental breakfast is £20.
03:23Pleasure.
03:27Oh, wow.
03:28This is all right.
03:30It's bigger than I thought.
03:31What do you reckon?
03:31It's stunning, yeah.
03:32It's lovely, isn't it?
03:33Very, very stylish.
03:36With Mark and Matt trying things on for size,
03:39today's next guest is admiring the area.
03:42Devon feels very pretty, very unpopulated.
03:45I'm dreading staying in something sort of stuck out in the middle of nowhere.
03:50I'm not really a Bear Grylls type.
03:54Opting for the indoors is Alicia Gibson,
03:57owner of Bosom B&B Bosom West Sussex,
04:00a woman who's proud to be a straight shooter.
04:03I'm very direct.
04:05I can upset some people,
04:07but I'd rather say it to your face than ch-ch-ch-ch-ch behind your back.
04:10Straight talkers can choose from three rooms for up to £115 a night
04:16and meet a host who's bet the house on it.
04:19This is my home,
04:20so it is awkward sometimes when you stay in somebody's house,
04:24but you have your own space.
04:27And when it comes to the competition,
04:29Alicia's attempting to manage expectations.
04:32I'm a bit of a perfectionist,
04:34but you need to be fair.
04:35You are judging somebody's character.
04:40Hello, lovely to meet you.
04:42Hello.
04:43I'm Andrew and this is my wife, Diane.
04:45I'm Alicia.
04:46We've put you in Rodan's retreat,
04:48which is £148 a night.
04:51Have a lovely time.
04:52Very cute.
05:00Very pretty.
05:01While Alicia enjoys instant attraction,
05:04today's final guests are on lookout duty.
05:06I spy something beginning with G.
05:11Gate.
05:12No.
05:13I don't know, Mibs, you tell me.
05:14Grass.
05:15Grass.
05:16Just look at it.
05:17Indulging in espionage,
05:20our partners Mubi Price and Stephen Ferguson,
05:23owners of Ashby's Accommodation in Portsmouth, Hampshire,
05:26a pair who do things by the book.
05:29Steve is like a walking encyclopedia.
05:33Encyclopedia.
05:34Yeah, that's the word.
05:35Mubi is fun-loving, outgoing.
05:38She's very eclectic, and I think...
05:41I don't like eclectic birds.
05:42I know, but she is.
05:44Guests who think variety is the spice of life
05:47can choose from 16 self-catering rooms
05:49for up to £155 a night
05:51and meet hosts who aren't having an identity crisis.
05:55We are not a boutique hotel.
05:56We are accommodation only.
05:59We put in here what we like
06:01when we go to the holiday place.
06:04And when it comes to the competition,
06:06this pair plan to keep them peeled.
06:08I can just spot things.
06:10I see what hasn't been done in a room.
06:13Our standards are really high.
06:15Hello.
06:18Hiya.
06:18Hi.
06:19I'm Andy, this is Diane.
06:21Hi, lovely to meet you.
06:22Me too.
06:23Lovely to meet you.
06:23Movie and Steve.
06:24Lovely.
06:25We've put you in the artist's garret,
06:27which is £168 a night.
06:29Hope you enjoy your stay.
06:31Thank you very much.
06:35Wow.
06:35Oh, my God, it looks really nice.
06:37I like the way they styled it.
06:39With the hosts out of the way,
06:41the guests can see if Burnswood Boutique Escapes
06:44avoids giving them sour grapes.
06:47Feather cushions.
06:48They're lovely, aren't they?
06:49Really nice.
06:50I love the decor.
06:51I love the colouring.
06:52Yeah, they blend together really well.
06:55Yeah, everything looks really clean.
06:57That's really clean, isn't it?
07:00Yeah, it's spotless.
07:01Yeah.
07:02I found this dirty mark on the inside of the duvet cover,
07:05and I think it's just really attention to detail.
07:08It's a huge fridge, isn't it, really?
07:10English mustard for my breakfast.
07:12I've thought about everything.
07:14There is a coffee machine, toss machine.
07:16It's got pretty much everything you're going to need.
07:18It's all good quality.
07:20Very clean.
07:21Spotless again.
07:22Yeah.
07:23It is super clean.
07:24There's no watermark.
07:26Perfect.
07:27It's a decent shower.
07:28It's a good use of the space as well.
07:30Yeah.
07:30Nice and clean.
07:31Nice and fresh.
07:34Oh, look at that.
07:35Oh, this looks good.
07:36Something different.
07:37Definitely.
07:38It's awesome.
07:39Room inspection's almost over.
07:41Stephen and Mubi are wrapping things up.
07:43I think it is the one-size-fits-all.
07:47Mark's hitting the hay.
07:48Yeah, it's good.
07:50I could actually have a kitten right now, actually.
07:54And Alicia's not on the right track.
07:56I would like the stones to be a little bit more exposed
08:00so that I wouldn't get my feet all wet.
08:08Bondly is in Devon, the only county in England to have two separate coastlines.
08:13And the hosts think they're on to a sure thing today with a lesson at their own on-site sculpture school.
08:21I've never done any sculpting before.
08:23Hopefully I don't get too messy wearing a white T-shirt.
08:26First, host Andrew wants to highlight his own handiwork.
08:29Welcome to the sculpture school.
08:32As well as the hospitality side of the business, I'm a professional sculptor.
08:36Is all of the work in here yours or are there other artists?
08:39Most of it.
08:40We teach here as well, so there's quite a lot of the students' work.
08:44Where can we see your sculptures?
08:47Well, David Bowie, funnily enough, is in Aylesbury.
08:49This is what's called the artist's cast and it's made of resin.
08:52The problem with Bowie is that every decade he reinvented himself completely.
08:57So to make this sculpture appeal to all the generations, I wanted to get all of those in.
09:01Right.
09:02What do you think of it?
09:04It looks beautiful.
09:05Very, very lifelike.
09:07Oh, thanks, Alicia.
09:08I think that some of the Bowies are better than the others.
09:11Let's move on.
09:13Mark was a tough critic when it came to Andy's sculpture.
09:16He could be an outspoken and difficult judge when it comes to feedback.
09:23With the sculptor's star man dividing opinion, it's time for the guests to get hands-on.
09:29So we're going to have a go at making an ear.
09:32Ears, one I made earlier.
09:35And as everyone gets to work...
09:37If you just grab a good handful of clay...
09:40The group begin to sound each other out.
09:45Whose ear are you doing?
09:46Michelangelo's.
09:48Oh, very good.
09:50I'm going to make a big ears.
09:51I have a big ears.
09:53Like Dr Spock.
09:56You'll be getting a thick ear.
09:58Oh, very good.
10:00Very good.
10:01I think there's quite a nice feel to the group.
10:05It's early days at the moment, but I'm enjoying their company.
10:09Sculptures styled.
10:10It's time to put ears to the ground and discover who is teacher's pet.
10:15That is very nice.
10:16That's brilliant.
10:16Yeah, well done, Steve.
10:18Always getting my ear chewed off.
10:19I know exactly what that looks like.
10:22Mubi, that's very, very good.
10:23Very good.
10:24Well done.
10:25Well done.
10:26I've gone for more of a cauliflower ear.
10:28Yeah, it's brilliant.
10:29Mark.
10:30Very good.
10:31Excellent.
10:32Alicia.
10:32I'm a good listener.
10:34Yeah, very good.
10:35Yeah, excellent.
10:36Is there a winner?
10:37I think Mubi's ear is excellent, closely followed by Alicia's.
10:41I think they were two of the best ears here, so that was lovely.
10:45Both Andy and Diana are very personable hosts, definitely in the right business.
10:50They're a team, aren't they?
10:51I mean, set the bar really high for the competition.
10:54And with class dismissed.
10:56Well done, guys.
10:57Well done.
10:58The guests are looking forward to some extracurricular action.
11:02It's been great to do the sculpting activity.
11:05It was a lot of fun.
11:05But I think it'll be good to get to know Andrew and Diane over a few drinks.
11:09Absolutely.
11:16The first visit of the week is to Bondley, Devon and Burnswood Boutique Escapes,
11:21where hosts Andrew and Diane have invited their guests...
11:25Good to see you again.
11:26Nice to see you.
11:26Down to their art studio for a drink.
11:30Cheers, everyone.
11:31Cheers.
11:31Cheers, everyone.
11:32Cheers.
11:33Cheers.
11:34And with glasses full, Mubi raises a point of order.
11:39Which one came first, teaching aspect or accommodation?
11:44So we set up the school here exactly ten years ago this year,
11:48but then we needed to diversify.
11:52We thought we've got this fabulous land and we just wanted to share it.
11:55Over the last ten years, we've gradually transformed what, in effect, was a four-acre field.
12:00So people will come and do a course and stay and, yeah, really get into the place.
12:05Yeah.
12:05With the art and everything else, it's just quite a unique thing, really.
12:08And I think it's lovely to make the most of it.
12:11It fits beautifully, doesn't it?
12:13Those two as a couple and the business as a whole, they're both passionate about the sculpture and that fits together perfectly.
12:20Sight sussed out.
12:22Matt's interested in the host's accommodation experience.
12:25Had you stayed in shepherd huts before you had them here?
12:28No.
12:29And we still haven't.
12:31What?
12:33You must stay in them and you see if there are any issues.
12:37We're only sitting in there the other day, actually, and thinking, God, this is really nice.
12:42Always stay in all of your rooms.
12:44We tried the baths out, didn't we?
12:46We were in the bath for two hours and you just turn into a kind of...
12:51Fully pruned.
12:52And you must always sit on the loo because you get a different perspective.
12:56Yes, that's a good idea.
12:56You get the perspective that guests get.
12:58It was a bit of a clangor to drop in the fact that we've never stayed in our own shepherd's huts, but just never got round to it.
13:05No.
13:05I personally feel that they should try it out because there are little things that I think they would realise.
13:12With Andrew and Diane not joining the flock, the next hosts decide to drop some hints.
13:18You are coming to our nest.
13:20We are not a hotel.
13:21We are accommodation.
13:23And the whole idea in ours is the experience.
13:27Yeah, fun and wellness.
13:28Fun and wellness.
13:30Fun and wellness.
13:31Ooh-hoo.
13:31It's not on the same scale.
13:33It certainly isn't four acres.
13:35We're not crazy enough to do that.
13:37All the chat around Steve and Ruby's place is quite intriguing.
13:42From what they said, you imagine it is going to be a bit quirky.
13:45It's a bit mysterious of what we're in for.
13:49Drink's done.
13:50It's all back to the huts, where Mark's feeling deeply dippy.
13:54This is the perfect way to end a pretty long day.
13:59Right now, Tony.
14:00Good night, sweetie.
14:01The sun is up in Bondly, and so are the guests.
14:11How did you sleep?
14:12Really bad.
14:14Me too.
14:14It was like lights out and that was it.
14:18Over in his hut, Mark's also feeling rested.
14:21How was your sleep?
14:22Lovely.
14:23Dark and peaceful and, yeah, great bed.
14:26The shower's a bit fun and games.
14:28It's a little bit peekaboo going between hot and cold.
14:31And in her accommodation, Alicia's also been washed out.
14:35The dial's ultra-sensitive.
14:37One millimetre made it scalding hot, the other way freezing cold.
14:42It wasn't nice at all, especially when you're washing your hair.
14:45Breakfast at Burnswood Boutique Escapes is self-catered, with a choice of an optional continental hamper
14:53for £20 or a meaty affair for £25.
14:57And the hosts believe they're packing a punch.
15:00They've got everything that we can think of that we would really want.
15:04Yeah, the quality's good.
15:06The only thing that could go wrong is they mess it up.
15:09With all the guests opting for a hamper, Andrew and Diane make tracks.
15:19Morning.
15:20Good morning.
15:20We've got your breakfast for you.
15:22Excellent.
15:22We hope you enjoy it.
15:24I'm sure we will.
15:24The granola's in there and jam and croissants in there.
15:27Thank you very much.
15:29All the guests inspect their hall.
15:32Butcher sausages.
15:34They look lovely.
15:35Zitter with a bacon.
15:36Two bacon each, flat pudding.
15:39Two eggs each.
15:40There's more than enough food here.
15:41Certainly enough for two, yeah.
15:42All looks beautiful quality.
15:46Continental, which is really well told out.
15:49Well presented, isn't it?
15:50Yeah, lovely and healthy.
15:53The ingredients and the produce were fantastic.
15:56Exactly what you want and more.
15:59Hamper's hailed.
16:00We need a touch more here.
16:01It's time to fathom the facilities.
16:04Every utensil.
16:06It's amazing.
16:07Got everything we need, yeah.
16:08It's really well equipped, isn't it?
16:10It is a very equipped kitchen, isn't it?
16:12Yeah, very much so.
16:13It has everything you will need for a stay.
16:16But in her hut, Alicia's not feeling switched on.
16:20The induction hob, this particular brand, isn't the easiest to work out.
16:24Personally, I would just pop the little instructions somewhere here.
16:27Just a short guideline of how to do it and then it's done.
16:30It doesn't need to be hidden away.
16:31Really amazing experience.
16:34100% attention to detail is amazing.
16:37Facilities were really good.
16:39I had everything I needed to cook, you know, full English.
16:44Equipment examined, it's time to tuck in.
16:46Mmm.
16:49Those sausages, lovely.
16:51And the overall stay is also on the menu.
16:54In terms of what's been provided, the quality of the produce, I think it's value for money.
16:58Yeah.
16:59£148 a night for a luxurious shepherd's hut and a breakfast like this.
17:04I think it's great value.
17:05For a really lovely experience.
17:07There are a few things that attention to detail could have been paid towards.
17:11I think £148.50 plus £25 for the breakfast is rather high.
17:18We've seen exactly what Diane and Andy are all about and they've obviously set the bar high.
17:25So now, you know, bring it on.
17:28Plates polished.
17:29It's time for the guests to fill out their anonymous feedback forms.
17:33This is what it all comes down to.
17:35Mmm.
17:36How are your hosts at Burnswood Boutique Escapes?
17:40Bubbly and welcoming hosts.
17:42Very friendly and attentive.
17:44Ten.
17:45How clean was Burnswood Boutique Escape?
17:49Very clean.
17:50Very clean.
17:51No issues.
17:52Ten.
17:53Ten.
17:54There was a grass stain on the underside of the duvet cover.
17:59So I'm going to give them an eight.
18:01How were the facilities?
18:03Very well equipped hut.
18:04Swedish bath is awesome.
18:06Please just test shower temp.
18:07Hot to cold.
18:08I think it's a nine.
18:09Yeah.
18:10Facilities faultless.
18:12We love the decor.
18:13A ten.
18:14Yeah.
18:15Overall, the facilities were to a higher end spec.
18:18The stepping stones need tidying up so your feet don't get wet in cold weather.
18:23The shower went from scalding to cold.
18:27I'm going to score them a seven.
18:29How did you sleep?
18:30A top-notch sleep.
18:32Dark and peaceful.
18:33It's a ten.
18:35We slept on logs.
18:37Yes, ten.
18:38Yeah.
18:38How was breakfast?
18:40Love the hamper.
18:41Lovely produce.
18:42Great kitchen.
18:43Got to be a ten.
18:44Now time for the big question.
18:48Would we stay here again?
18:49Yes.
18:50Of course, Lizzie, yes.
18:51Definitely.
18:52100%.
18:53When I go away, I don't necessarily want to stay in a shepherd's hut, self-catering facilities.
19:00For me, it would have to be no.
19:04Now the guests must pay what they think their stay was worth.
19:08Payment time.
19:10The cash will be kept secret until the end of the competition.
19:13But for now, Andrew and Diane can see if their guests thought Burnswood Boutique Escapes
19:18was smoking.
19:20Shall we open it, then?
19:21I think we'd better.
19:23How clean was Burnswood Boutique Escapes?
19:26A ten.
19:27Wow.
19:28That's good.
19:29Very clean.

19:52Let's see.
19:53Yes.
19:54Fantastic.
19:54That is brilliant.
19:57Let's move on to the next one, then.
19:59How were the facilities?
20:01Nine.
20:02Nine's a fantastic score.
20:03Very well-equipped hut.
20:06That's great.
20:06Swedish bath is awesome.
20:08Please just test shower tent.
20:10Hot, too cold.
20:12They are just temperamental.
20:14Yes.
20:14And you have to have that tap-on for a minute for the temperature to settle down.
20:20How did you sleep?
20:22Ten.
20:23That's amazing.
20:24Wow.
20:24Top-notch sleep.
20:25Dark and peaceful.
20:27That's perfect.
20:28Yeah.
20:28How was breakfast?

21:02Friendly and attentive.
21:04That's a really lovely thing.
21:05Yeah.
21:06How clean was Burnswood Boutique Escapes?
21:08We got an eight.
21:10I wonder what wasn't perfect.
21:11There was a grass stain and bits of grass on the underside of the duvet cover.
21:16We changed the duvet cover because we noticed there was a tear,
21:21so I'm really surprised there was a bit of grass.
21:23How were the facilities?
21:25And we got a seven.
21:26That's not so good.
21:27Not so great.
21:28Not so good at all.
21:29The stepping stones need tidying up so you don't get your feet wet when walking to the bath.
21:35I think that's really very mean, actually.
21:37They're staying in a field and we put the stepping stones in specifically to stop them from getting muddy feet.
21:43The shower went from scalding to ice cold.
21:47We know about this issue.
21:49It's to do with the gas heating.
21:51Yes.
21:51And it's easily solved.
21:53Yes.
21:54Bye-bye.
21:55Bye-bye.

22:06Yeah.
22:06But I'll be keeping my eye on a few people, I think.
22:11Next time, when Stephen and Mubi host...
22:13Good morning, Alicia.
22:14Welcome to Ashby's.
22:16Some guests don't want to shelve the stay.
22:19It's genuine marvel, darling, and it's absolutely spotless.
22:22But others aren't switched on.
22:25Bulb out.
22:26The attention to detail's missing, isn't it?
