00:00Silence!
00:02Four sets of holiday hosts.
00:06Check in to each other's places.
00:08Morning, ladies.
00:09Morning.
00:10And welcome to Beck and the Treats.
00:11And get to grips with one another.
00:13I thought you both looked a bit snarly, perhaps.
00:16Snarly?
00:17I can be sometimes, but strangers don't normally see that.
00:20Today, things are all shook up.
00:24Poor Jean, it's not happening.
00:26As they battle.
00:27How do you do with tricky customers?
00:29Up until today, I haven't actually had any.
00:33To be named best value for money.
00:35I think the price point is spot on.
00:44The first visit of the week is to Blackpool in Lancashire.
00:47And Sefton Blackpool, run by owner Andy Patterson.
00:51A man on a date with destiny.
00:54I'm currently living my childhood dream to run a guest house.
00:57It's my job, but it's also my passion.
01:01I did view over 50 hotels when I was choosing Sefton.
01:05And as soon as I walked in the front door, I just fell in love.
01:08Guests looking for a fatal attraction can choose from one of six rooms for up to £80 per night,
01:14with an additional £10 per person charged for breakfast, and meet a hands-on host.
01:20My role here is one-man band, yeah.
01:22I'm everything.
01:23Receptionist, cleaner, cook.
01:25Anything you can think of, it's down to me.
01:27I do believe Sefton's a true reflection of me, yeah.
01:31And when it comes to the competition, Andy hopes the hometown won't be a hindrance.
01:37I think Blackpool's got wrong stereotypes.
01:39If you hear something negative about Blackpool, it tends to be from people that have never actually been.
01:44About to arrive are today's first guests.
01:48I'm looking forward to meeting some friendly people.
01:51As long as somebody doesn't boss me about.
01:52You don't like being told what to do, do you?
01:54Apart from you.
01:56You never listen to that anyway.
01:58Under orders are Karen and Brian Bebb, who run beckon retreats near Newtown Powis, a couple who compliment each other.
02:07Karen's best trait, I don't know, it's been Karen, she's just great.
02:12My family do call him golden balls, because he's just lovely.
02:15That's the nickname that they've given him.
02:19Guests with an appetite for affection can choose from four lodges for up to £200 per night,
02:25and find hosts who trumpet the tranquil.
02:28Our lodges provide a perfect tonic, a release from the busyness that people have in their day-to-day work.
02:35It's a reset for people.
02:37Guests do seem to enjoy it though, we get lovely feedback.
02:40People come here to get away.
02:42And when it comes to judging others, this pair plot a perceptive performance.
02:47Karen has a good eye for detail, the cleanliness of the property Karen will pick up on.
02:51When you're paying to go away, you want to go in and it be sparkly.
02:54What do you think Anna?
02:58It looks brilliant.
02:59It looks nice, doesn't it?
03:00Yeah.
03:01I'm excited.
03:02Cool, shall we go in and see?
03:03Yeah, brilliant.
03:08Hi, welcome to Sefton Blackpool.
03:10My name's Andy.
03:11Hi, I'm Brian.
03:12I'm Karen.
03:13Tonight you'll be staying in room six.
03:14It's £70 a night, I hope you have a canny stay.
03:17It's lovely, isn't it?
03:18Oh, it's lovely.
03:19Yeah.
03:20It's really nice.
03:21Gorgeous window.
03:22Best impressions are good.
03:23Yeah.
03:24While Karen and Brian light up, the next guests are making mischief.
03:30I think I'm naughtier than you.
03:32I always best behaviour.
03:34You don't want me to be quiet.
03:36If I'm quiet, that's it.
03:37You're never quiet even when you're in a mood, you bangy.
03:43Sounding off are owner, Ying Crook, and staff cook, Jean Ashton, of the Castle Inn in
03:49Knuckless Powys, a pair who believe honesty is the best policy.
03:54Jean is quite funny, very honest.
03:58Ying's off her head.
04:01Nah, she's lovely.
04:02Don't know how I put up with her, but she's lovely.
04:05Guests looking to be charmed can choose from one of six rooms for up to £135 a night
04:11and meet a duo who hope their hosting will be held in high regard.
04:15Castle Inn provide good service, good quality, home-cooked food and friendly.
04:22Everything's good about this class.
04:25The cook.
04:28And when it comes to the competition, these two are enthused about offering their expertise.
04:34We're looking forward to judging other people.
04:37I think we'll be fair judges.
04:39I do have a very good eye for the detail.
04:41I'll be quite honest and straightforward.
04:44Wait and see.
04:51Hi, welcome to Sefton Blackpool.
04:53My name's Andy.
04:54I'm Jean.
04:55I'm Ying.
04:56Tonight you'll be staying in Room One.
04:58It's priced at £60 per night and £10 per person for breakfast.
05:02Come in.
05:03Hope you enjoy your stay.
05:11Oh, oh, oh.
05:13Good side, to be fair.
05:14Picking up.
05:15Don't you be reaching out to me in the night, mate?
05:18Yeah, I'll be kicking you on the leg.
05:20With Ying and Jean made to measure, today's last guests are making their bow.
05:26This is my first time to Blackpool.
05:28Is it what you expected?
05:30I didn't really have too many expectations.
05:32I know it's got to be trashy because the young farmers come here every year and trash the place.
05:36Well, yeah.
05:37That's probably why it looks to run down.
05:38The young farmers have trashed it.
05:41Damaging reputations are couple Charlotte Cleveley and Matt Wood of the Apple Farm in Snitterfield, Warwickshire.
05:48A duo with doppelgangers.
05:50Have we ever been compared to anyone famous?
05:54Nearly obvious.
05:55Woody Toy Story.
05:57Or Woody Warpecker.
05:58I don't think I have.
06:00Yeah, I know what you're going to say.
06:01Mrs Trenchbowl.
06:02That was the one that popped into mine.
06:04Yeah, I thought so.
06:05Guests looking for a characterful stay will find four bell tents for up to £125 a night and meet hosts who rave about the rural.
06:15It really is a beautiful spot.
06:17I'd like to think that we do offer the ultimate countryside experience from our location.
06:21That really is what we're about.
06:23And when it comes to their own excursions, Charlotte avoids certain accommodation options.
06:29I'm probably just being ridiculously stereotypical.
06:32But a Blackpool B&B, that probably wouldn't be my first choice.
06:37I hate Blackpool.
06:40Have you seen any neck curtains so far, Charlotte?
06:42There's a lot of neck curtains, isn't there?
06:43I don't understand neck curtains.
06:45They're just awful.
06:47They just massively give me the ick.
06:55Hiya.
06:56Welcome to Sefton Blackpool.
06:57My name's Andy.
06:58Hi, I'm Charlotte.
06:59Hi, I'm Matt.
07:00Tonight you'll be staying on our deluxe suite.
07:02It's £80 a night.
07:03Come in and have a canister.
07:05Oh, wow.
07:06That's colourful.
07:08Better than I was expecting for a Blackpool hotel.
07:12Yeah.
07:13I really like it.
07:14With the host out of the way, the guests can see if Sefton Blackpool towers.
07:19Nice cool mattress protector.
07:20The mattress is all clean underneath, yep.
07:21Oh, it's nice that, yeah.
07:22That's a good mug.
07:23I like a good mug.
07:24Oh, I like these curtains, Jean.
07:25They're like mine at home.
07:26They must have good taste, innit?
07:27You've got tea, hot chocolate, little biscuits.
07:28Coffees.
07:29I think that's well put together.
07:30It all feels soft and fresh.
07:32I think we'll have a good night of sleep on that.
07:33Quite good that all the angles are matching, isn't it?
07:34Yeah.
07:35Usually they're all mismatched.
07:36OK, here we are in the bathroom.
07:37It's a bit snug, but...
07:38But it's bright.
07:39Yeah.
07:40Definitely goes with the sparkliness of Blackpool that I like.
07:41Blackpool tints.
07:42We haven't got any net curtains, though.
07:43I am over the moon about that.
07:44That's all right, innit?
07:45Considering the room is good.
07:46It's good.
07:47It's good.
07:48It's good.
07:49It's good.
07:50It's good.
07:51It's good.
07:52It's good.
07:53It's good.
07:54It's good.
07:55It's good.
07:56It's good.
07:57It's good.
07:58It's good.
07:59It's good.
08:00Considering the room is quite small, that room's quite a decent size.
08:05You pretty much got everything in here.
08:07It's clean.
08:08It's fresh.
08:09It has a modern feel to it.
08:10For £80 a night, I think...
08:12It'd be worth the money.
08:14Yeah.
08:15It's strange not having a wardrobe, but that is space saving and you can hang your clothes.
08:19Yeah.
08:20Ideal.
08:21OK.
08:22It's OK.
08:23Nice and clean.
08:24Room inspection's almost done.
08:26Yeah, it's clean.
08:27Brian and Karen are airing their views.
08:30Brilliant.
08:31You can see the sea.
08:32Yeah.
08:33Ying's out for the count.
08:35We need more than one.
08:37Two people, two each.
08:40And Charlotte and Matt are listening to the lav.
08:44Huh?
08:45The toilet talks.
08:46Blackpool is home to reputedly the world's largest mirror ball, made with 47,000 mirrors.
09:01And today, host Andy wants to light up everyone's day with a trip to an arcade.
09:07I reckon that's going to be a great laugh.
09:09It'll be a good bit of fun.
09:10It'll be a chance to meet everybody properly.
09:12Yeah.
09:13I'm sure we'll have a giggle.
09:15First up, it's the iconic Camel Derby, where players must roll balls into holes so their
09:21mechanical camel prances along in pole.
09:24Coming down, I'm going to Walsham and Blackpool Camel Derby.
09:26One pound a goal every time.
09:28Gear on, guys.
09:29Gladiators ready.
09:31For the first race, host Andy takes on Karen and Brian.
09:38Up you go.
09:39Come on, then.
09:46And it's neck and neck.
09:48Go, go, go, go, go.
09:50But home advantage helps the host, who humps ahead.
09:53Andy's got the hang of it.
09:54Come on, Andy.
09:55And takes victory.
09:57Winner number 16.
09:59That's it.
10:00Well done, Andy.
10:01Oh, come on.
10:03Andy seemed a good laugh, I think.
10:05Yeah.
10:06It's easy to get along with.
10:07Yeah, it's definitely made us all feel welcome.
10:09Andy, the host today, has been really good.
10:11Sorry he enjoyed his company.
10:12Yeah, he was good fun, wasn't he?
10:13Yeah, very welcoming.
10:14Super.
10:15He couldn't have been nicer, really.
10:16Next up...
10:21It's time for Charlotte, Matt, Ying and Jean to race.
10:24Where's the ball?
10:25Come on.
10:26Go slow.
10:27It's a crowded field, but Ying streaks ahead.
10:31Am I close?
10:32You're winning?
10:33No.
10:34Winning, number 19.
10:35What did you get?
10:36Oh, well done.
10:3714.
10:38No-one likes a sad loser.
10:39I think Charlotte was stealing balls.
10:40That might make a...
10:41I'll come back at him.
10:42Race run.
10:43Next, some guests are riding high.
10:44Ah!
10:45Oh, they'll come!
10:46Here they are!
10:47Oh!
10:48What do you do?
10:49There are two?
10:50Oh!
10:5114.
10:5414.
10:55She's so happy.
10:57He's are cute, mate.
10:58Isn't it?
10:59It's a nice gift?
11:00I think Charlotte was stealing balls.
11:02That might make it more competitive.
11:03Race run.
11:04Next, some guests are riding high.
11:06Oh!
11:07Oh, they come!
11:08Here they are!
11:09Oh!
11:10Oh, they come!
11:11Oh, they come!
11:12Oh!
11:13You keep making it, you're here.
11:14Andy, sit bloody still.
11:17Andy, sit up. Sit up, Andy.
11:19She's chilling off already.
11:22Stay still. Don't start.
11:25Hi, Jean. Hiya.
11:26I'm not letting go to either anybody, but...
11:29OK.
11:32Jean is not loving that.
11:34Captain Andy was rocking the boat,
11:36and I don't think Jean is a fan of heights.
11:38I think she could really have some fun with us
11:41as we go through the week.
11:43The trip on the monorail was fun,
11:44apart from Jean having a heart attack all the way around.
11:47Me and Jean have grew closer today due to the monorail.
11:51With Jean shaken, not stirred,
11:53host Andy takes the group to chill out.
11:56So, Andy, are the arcades something
11:58that you often recommend to your guests?
12:00Yeah, I always recommend them,
12:02but after seeing you who's on the derby, I'm going to rethink that.
12:06So, Andy, what do you recommend in Blackpool?
12:09Blackpool's one of the only seaside towns that's open all year round,
12:12so, like, it starts in January.
12:14They have, like, a pigeon convention.
12:16A what?
12:17Believe it or not.
12:17Pigeon convention.
12:18And then February, they have a magic convention,
12:20so it brings in, like, 20,000 magicians from all over the world.
12:23And then Easter comes, and then the season starts.
12:27So, basically, you can come to Blackpool all year round.
12:31All year round, yeah, there's always something to say
12:33and always something to do, yeah.
12:34Secretly, everybody likes a little bit of Blackpool,
12:37so hearing about it always interests people.
12:41Blackpool probably wouldn't be somewhere we'd choose to come,
12:43but I think you could have a fabulous family holiday here.
12:46We have been pleasantly surprised by some of it, yeah.
12:49With the afternoon drawing to a close, everyone's mouthing off.
12:54We've done the appos, we've done the camels.
12:56I think we deserve a drink now.
12:58We are very thirsty.
12:59The first visit of the week is to Blackpool in Lancashire,
13:09where tonight host Andy has invited his guests
13:12to a local bar for a bevy.
13:14I just want to have a toast to a successful first day together.
13:18Cheers.
13:18Cheers, Andy.
13:19Cheers.
13:21And as the group whet their whistles,
13:23Ying's intrigued by Andy's origins.
13:26What make you come to do this kind of...
13:29It stems back to family holidays when I was young,
13:32staying in various guest houses,
13:34and from that young age,
13:36I knew that that's what I wanted to do for a living.
13:38I came and viewed many hotels,
13:40and I just fell in love with Sefton as soon as I'd seen it.
13:43So you make your dream come through?
13:45Yes, it looks like I did, yeah.
13:46Yeah.
13:47Fair place, fair place, yeah.
13:49And has being in hospitality met your expectations?
13:53I think I've always actually been in hospitality,
13:55because before this, I worked in hairdressing
13:57and then had my own hairdressing business.
13:59So I've been doing that since I left school.
14:02So you can cut somebody hair as well?
14:04I can, yeah.
14:05That's a bit handy.
14:06Could be a unique selling point.
14:08Bed and breakfast and a trip.
14:11Andy, as host tonight, was really good, wasn't he?
14:13We've enjoyed chatting to him, finding out more about him.
14:16I thought it was lovely that he said it was the childhood dream
14:19to have his own hotel, and he's achieved that.
14:22Ambitions realised.
14:24Next, Andy wants to deal with a little local difficulty.
14:27So when everybody found out you were coming to Blackpool,
14:30what were your thoughts?
14:31Well, I was absolutely delighted, wasn't I?
14:33Because this is where I was born.
14:34I'm very proud of Blackpool.
14:36Trip down memory lane.
14:36Yeah, trip down memory lane.
14:37There's so much to do.
14:39You can't really get bored, can you, in Blackpool?
14:41There's always something to do.
14:42Yeah, there's something for everyone, isn't there?
14:44I have to be honest, I thought, oh, God, Blackpool.
14:48But yours is in a lovely location.
14:51Definitely pleasantly surprised.
14:53Charlotte said she was dreading Blackpool.
14:54It didn't really come as a surprise,
14:56because I feel like it's perceived as a Marmite town.
14:59You either love it or hate it.
15:01But I think Charlotte and Matt have been converted to Blackpool,
15:04and they'll return.
15:05There's good and bad parts anywhere you choose to go.
15:08Blackpool's a good laugh, I think.
15:10I do have to admit, to what we've experienced today,
15:13I have been pleasantly surprised.
15:15Civic pride restored.
15:17Now Matt wants to learn how the host handles guest gripes.
15:20Andy, how do you deal with tricky customers?
15:24Well, up until today, I haven't actually had any.
15:28So has anybody got any stories of tricky customers?
15:31Well, we get complaints about the cock-a-doodle-doo, don't we?
15:34Yeah.
15:35Is that from yourself?
15:38It's the countryside, so you get a bit of cock-a-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo.
15:43What can you do about a cock-a-doodle-doo?
15:47Jean and Ying, they're obviously out in the country,
15:50a little bit, because of the cock-a-doodle-doo.
15:53Jean's cock was making a lot of noise.
15:55She said the cock-a-doodle-doo.
15:59We've had the odd tricky guest,
16:02and I think the one that probably sticks in my mind the most.
16:05She called prior to her stay, because she was really quite concerned.
16:09Was she going to be safe, and would there be bears?
16:13Yes.
16:17Twitch actually informed me that, yes, of course she would be safe.
16:20I thought she was going to say, yes, there will be bears.
16:25You're all right, Jean.
16:26There is no bears.
16:30Charlotte and Matt seem, yeah, they seem really good fun.
16:33I think Charlotte's funny.
16:34I think she could be a lot of fun.
16:36Matt's still a bit quiet.
16:37Matt's a bit quiet, isn't her?
16:39Well, look at me, I'm quiet.
16:40Well, you're not really quiet, to be fair.
16:44Bare necessities laid out.
16:46Charlotte offers up further details about her and Matt's destination.
16:50So, you're coming to stay with us next.
16:52You will be coming into 50 acres of countryside.
16:58We do offer self-catering.
17:00We do also have a brilliant cafe just literally next door.
17:06You will be glamping.
17:06Jean looks terrified.
17:08No, I'm brilliant.
17:09I'm good with that.
17:11And you will be in bell tents.
17:13What's a bell tent, that?
17:14Well, you're going to find out soon, aren't you, Jean?
17:16Very soon.
17:17Very soon.
17:18They hinted that it was on 50 acres, so I wonder whether it's a farm as well.
17:22Yeah.
17:22A little bit like ourselves.
17:23Can't wait to get into a bell tent.
17:25It's a different experience, isn't it?
17:27Just be aware of the bear.
17:31Preview pitch perfect.
17:33It's time to bounce back to the B&B for bed.
17:35It's nice.
17:36Have a bounce.
17:39Nice.
17:39Like being in a bouncing castle.
17:43Good night.
17:44Good night.
17:44Thank you, Jean.
17:49In Blackpool, the sun's up and the guests are stirring.
17:54How was your sleep?
17:55It was good.
17:56Yeah, I slept well.
17:57Did you?
17:58Very good.
18:00Slept like a baby.
18:01You snored.
18:02Yeah, I did.
18:03Meanwhile, in their room, trouble's not brewing for Charlotte and Matt.
18:09Did you sleep well, my love?
18:11Yeah, I slept well.
18:11Nice comfy bed.
18:12Yeah.
18:13I do like this window.
18:14Yeah.
18:14It's a nice spot.
18:15It makes the room nice and bright.
18:16And you can see the sea.
18:21Due to unforeseen circumstances, host Andy is unable to continue in the competition.
18:27So this morning, his guests are venturing out to a local caf for their breakfast.
18:31A little bit disappointed we can't be at Andy's place, you know, to have his cooking for breakfast.
18:39I'm sure it would have been brilliant then.
18:40Yeah, I think so, yeah.
18:42We really enjoyed our stay and loved Andy.
18:44He seemed to super, super chatted the breakfast menu.
18:46And the breakfast menu looked really lovely.
18:48It was a real shame.
18:49Morning, guys.
18:50Morning.
18:50Morning.
18:51Waiter Wayne is on hand to take the orders.
18:54Could I have a full English, please?
18:56One full English, yeah.
18:58Could I have the breakfast omelette?
18:59No sausage, though, thank you.
19:01Could I have poached egg plates on toast with some bacon?
19:04Yeah, I'll get that sorted out for you.
19:09Orders in, bedroom matters are next on the menu.
19:12How did you sleep last night, Grace?
19:14Yeah, I'm really good.
19:15You had a good night, sir, yeah.
19:16Lights out straight to sleep.
19:17Yeah.
19:18Yeah.
19:18I slept well as well, yeah.
19:20I don't always sleep well, but I had a good night last night.
19:22That's good.
19:23A good night's sleep, yeah.
19:24Apart from Ying.
19:26Do you think the name is almost snoring?
19:30The atmosphere at breakfast, I thought, was generally upbeat, cheery.
19:34Everyone seemed in a good, spring-full mood.
19:36I think it's a pity we've lost Andy,
19:38but otherwise I think the group's keen to carry on with the rest of the week.
19:42Slumber stories shared.
19:44The grub is up.
19:45A little more full English.
19:48I can't.
19:49Mmm.
19:49That's lovely.
19:50Does look nice.
19:56Mine's nice.
19:58Lovely.
19:59I'm enjoying mine, can you?
20:01You're a mouthful.
20:02Yeah, it's good.
20:03Yeah, good.
20:05It's a nice bacon.
20:06Bacon looks great.
20:06My eggs are cooked nicely.
20:08How are your poached eggs, ladies?
20:10Lovely.
20:11Lovely breakfast to start off the day.
20:13Mmm.
20:14It's great to have some good options of nice cafes to come out.
20:17There's loads, isn't there?
20:18Go to support the local as well.
20:20Yeah, definitely.
20:21I think having the option of a really late night,
20:24and then you can have your bit of a lie in,
20:25and just stay in bed till brunch.
20:26I think everybody enjoyed the food at breakfast this morning.
20:30Everybody seemed to tuck in.
20:31Yeah, there were six completely clear plates,
20:34which is always a good sign.
20:36Accessible eateries admired.
20:38Next, talk turns to Andy's overall offering.
20:40So, what do you think about Andy's place,
20:44about his room price?
20:46I think the price point at £80 a night,
20:49I think that is spot on for value for money.
20:52I think his place, I think it's reasonable,
20:55value for the money.
20:56Yeah.
20:56Especially when you're in, you know, Blackpool.
20:59I know Blackpool, it's really, really competitive.
21:01It does a good job, doesn't it?
21:02Yeah.
21:02Yeah.
21:04I've paid a lot more
21:06and not had as good a stay as we've had.
21:09From our perspective, I think it's good value for money.
21:12Price pontificated, discussion diverts to the next stay.
21:16I can't wait to see your place tomorrow.
21:19Looking forward to it.
21:20I'm glad you're excited.
21:21Yeah, it's something totally different.
21:24Yeah, I hope you guys will come with an open mind.
21:26We've really tried to make the most out of the space that we have.
21:30I guess, ultimately, I set up something that I would like to stay at.
21:35So, I hope you like it too.
21:37I'm really looking forward to it.
21:39I am.
21:39I can't wait.
21:40Yeah, we can't wait to have to go.
21:41I just hope the weather turn out to be nice.
21:43It's going to be fine.
21:44It never rains with us.
21:46Oh, there you go.
21:47Perfect.
21:50Breakfast done.
21:51Charlotte and Matt forecast some forks in the road ahead.
21:55People do seem to be genuinely interested and excited in coming to us.
21:59I hope we meet with their expectations.
22:01What you perceive to be cleanliness can be such a personal thing.
22:05It will be interesting to see what their thoughts are.
22:09Next time when Charlotte and Matt host...
