00:14another we've just won quite a big award gold for best in the Peak District hold

00:18on we're up against professionals here today the group give it full throttle

00:23can we rev her up a bit John he'll be talking about this for years to come he's

00:27never been that happy in 25 years as they battle what do you make of these

00:32beans do you think they were homemade or were they tinned I don't think they were

00:36homemade to be named best value for money how were the facilities a six

00:48the second visit of the week is to bonus on Windermere in the Lake District and the

00:53Rybeck Hotel run by manager Jack Waring under the guidance of owner Neil Barnes a pair who know all

01:01the right words Jack is very conscientious works hard hopefully he'll continue in that vein Neil is a

01:07um be careful yeah I'm trying to be careful yeah so Neil is a hard-working kind generous funny bloke

01:18guests looking for a laugh can choose from 27 rooms priced at up to 258 pounds a night including

01:26breakfast in a place that proves it's all about location people come to the Lake District from all

01:32over the world and hopefully our hotel here on Windermere does it justice eight of the rooms have

01:38laid views I think we've definitely got wow factor and this pair aren't ones to dwell on the past or

01:46trying to be a country house with a modern twist everything is new all the beds all the carpets all

01:51the decorations new so it's a pretty newly renovated hotel yeah it's still got that character I hope I'm

01:56great views today's first guest is on the way and debating the destination I think it's going to

02:03be something different might be a double-decker bus who knows who knows it could be anything

02:08jumping to conclusions is Chris Long owner of Dale to Swale glamping in Richmond North Yorkshire earlier in

02:16the week during an outing on a steam train Jack didn't hold back about the location our properties in a

02:25really well-known tourist attraction in the UK so it'd be nice for y'all to come and see what's in

02:30the area look forward to it so today Chris is certain of a super setting I'm expecting something

02:38pretty spectacular because they've they've definitely bigged it up there's a beautiful view you can see

02:42all the way down the valley wow what an amazing place this must be what a lovely lovely hotel I hope

02:50my bed's overlooking the lake morning Chris welcome to the Rybeck Hotel Windermere good morning you'll

02:56be staying in our cozy king room this evening the price is 183 pound including breakfast fantastic

03:01thank you very much enjoy your stay thank you good-sized room like that and first impressions really

03:09pleased with that as Chris bigs up the space the next guests are ruminating their relationship we

03:15do complement each other very well because I want it done so things do get done a little bit quicker

03:21than they would if I left you do it all right darling looking for the quiet life are Jane and Phil

03:44been very hands-on with the latest venture I have yes yeah it was derelict really when we got it so today

03:51Jane and Phil are trading expectations I think Neil and Jack's place is gonna have a bit of character to

03:58it Neil said he's done a lot of the renovations I think it's going to be renovated and I would

04:03think very modern to a high standard I think they're gonna pull all the stops out hi hello welcome to

04:11the Rybeck Hotel Windermere you'll be staying in our grand room with late view the price is 258 pounds

04:16including breakfast brilliant thank you see you later oh wow look at that for a view this beautiful view

04:25isn't it stunning as Jane and Phil lust over the lakeside today's final guests are thrashing out

04:31themes given the area that we're in I thought like maybe Beatrix Potter because Beatrix Potter theme

04:38and Neil's dressed as a rabbit in a onesie hopping mad are married couple Naeem and Sarah Payman of the

04:46love lady shield hotel in Alston Cumbria last time out when they hosted hello welcome to love

04:53lady for some of the guests the devil was in the detail I just think some of the furniture and decor

05:00just needs upgrading it does need a bit of decorating in there we've got a bit of scuff there here there's

05:05a bit of wear and tear which meant marks how were the facilities that love lady shield we're a mixed bag

05:11and eight yeah I'm gonna have to go for about six and disappointing six oh that's painful and today

05:20Naeem and Sarah are fathoming feedback I mean I've been wondering whether some of it was just tactics to

05:26try and get the score down I think we should still stay fair I don't think we should follow in those

05:31footsteps I think we should just try and give a clear picture of the experience that we've had

05:36hello hello thanks welcome to the Ryback Hotel Windermere you'll be staying in our grand room with

05:43Lakeview price for tonight is 258 pounds great thank you enjoy oh wow wow for the price that we're paying

05:52I'd expect something slightly larger to be honest maybe an additional room some sort of a suite with

05:58the hosts out of the way the guests can see if all's in check at the Ryback and their dust until

06:05that view is really stunning it is a stunning view spotless yeah definitely looks nice and clean

06:13yeah all spotless it's like everything's been cleaned there's paint on this clothes hanger I mean

06:21that's not a great finish and you can see a proper wave in the wall there oh no that's comfy it is yeah

06:28it's got tea and biscuits fresh coffee in the morning absolutely perfect the coving up here

06:35there's quite a bit of a mismatch looks like they've just forgotten to fill it it is a lovely

06:39view lovely garden but I was hoping for a lakeside view oh it's nice it does look clean it's modern I

06:48can just fit in this one just a little more space would be would be preferable I'd have expected

06:53something that at least matches with the color instead of all this stainless steel type finish

06:57room inspections almost over Chris can't help falling in love I'm feeling like the cozy king

07:03with this excellent Sarah's scaled up and Phil and Jane joined the club all we need now is a bottle of

07:14fizz and a cigar the lake district consists of 16 bodies of water but only one is officially a lake

07:27Windermere is in fact a mere defined as shallow in relation to its depth and today the mere mention

07:35of a trip aboard a steamboat hi okay welcome on has the guests fired up have you ever been on a steamboat

07:42before no first time first time looking forward to it and as the boat hits the water Chris is in full

07:53flow what sort of guests to generally come and stay at your place generally they're coming to see all

07:58the amenities that the lakes have to offer I mean walking boating even the town itself's quite quaint

08:0418 million tourists per year that's what it has here if you made a pound out of each of those 18

08:10million tourists you'd be laughing right we've only had 17 million this year so let's hope you've got a

08:16better here next year really enjoyed it weather's been perfect crystal clear water and a great

08:22experience Jack there's a castle at the far end of the lake so that's actually rare castle it's a

08:27big tourist attraction as well I can't say I've actually had a chance to go there yet you've got

08:30plans to go and have a look I've not got plans but I would like to go yeah okay it sounds like Neil's

08:37working you too hard Jack yeah I think so he's only just cut back off holiday that's the first time

08:43we've seen Naeem and Sara since the feedback and it seems all okay no tension in there yeah I feel

08:49like normal since we've had the feedback I'm not taking anything to heart it hasn't changed my

08:55opinion on any of the other people so yeah well good with relations on calm waters Neil has a surprise

09:02he hopes won't rock the boat we've got a bit of a treat for one lucky person who's gonna get to steer

09:07the boat captain Phil don't crash okay and with Phil at the helm can we rev her up a bit John the group

09:19let off some steam Phil there's an iceberg to the starboard he'll be talking about this for years he's

09:27never been that happy in 25 years Phil was like a pig in muck when he was driving the boat he seems

09:35so happy bless him and Jane said that he loves that kind of stuff so who's captain Phil for sure

09:40I've lined us up look we're coming straight in with the afternoon a soaring success

09:47wow the hosts are flying high we've definitely pushed the boat on this one today haven't we Neil

09:55yes good vibes we've had the perfect visit up to now let's just hope it carries on

10:00the second visit of the week is to bonus on Windermere in the Lake District and the Rybeck Hotel

10:12where hosts Neil and Jack have invited their guests downstairs to the bar for drinks cheers

10:18cheers and with tipples tasted Chris inquires as to his host's history new to meeting how has that

10:26all worked we have over hotels and Jack was at one of the other hotels then he was promoted to this

10:32hotel are we happy with that yeah well it's been a great opportunity for me I started off doing kitchen

10:37work and then I got this opportunity to come to the lakes which I couldn't say no to you must have

10:42great faith in Jack and that does actually show you've got a great career and future ahead of

10:46you Jack thank you we may give him a full-time contract yeah I think it's nice that Jack's been

10:53given this opportunity at such a young age yes definitely responsibility isn't it 27 room hotel so

11:00where did you guys get the inspiration for all this decor there wasn't a lot for that's just me

11:04winging it I'm afraid really this is my job really this is what I do really I do I do renovation work

11:10from properties really and it was in disrepair it'd been empty for two years it was a tired

11:14old place weren't it yeah water coming through the ceilings when I first came through the door

11:18yeah and we'll put a bit of love back into the building hopefully you've definitely done that

11:21I couldn't find a fireplace so I just bought a load of boxes and just built the fireplace out of it so

11:27you know a bit like blue peter just make things you know what I mean but you've obviously got a flare

11:31as far as hotel standards go there's bits and bobs here and there that could have done with a bit of

11:36fine-tuning and finishing off and I'm sure in years to come they'll keep reinvesting and improving

11:40standards even further decor discussed Chris turns the tables on Phil and Jane and just wondering how

11:47are you guys find working with each other do you work well I do the day-to-day running of it pretty

11:52much do everything Phil will step in and help when it's very very busy because I can't do it all

11:56single-handedly on my own yeah do you have no stuff at all I have a little bit of help yeah but not a lot

12:02most of it ourselves don't we Jane's a one woman sure I think Jane's is going to be a lot more

12:08boutique and I think it could be quite swish hers as well yeah I think she may put a lot of effort

12:12into it like Jane I also work by myself and we are self-catered anything that we need to bring maybe a

12:20torch some warm clothes and some wellies I'm not a big outdoors person myself so oh I feel you there

12:27you'll survive are your facilities off-grid to a degree but you will have your creature comforts

12:33oh let's see looking forward to this yeah it does yeah I'm open to some electric and hope we can flush

12:42your loo at least yes we don't want you wetting the bed do I don't want to wet the bed drinks done

12:46it's all up to bed when name's getting crossed wires I have to bend all the way down and move this

12:52bedside away from the wall to be able to plug my phone into I hope you can't reach out at all so

12:57your phone runs out so that you don't go on anymore good night morning has broken over Lake Windermere

13:07I had a great night sleep but the bed was so comfy I was thinking I was just a little bit disappointed

13:13that we are actually above the bar it's quite noisy up until about 11 o'clock right I was woken up just

13:19before seven o'clock this morning I could hear some cars outside I had a quick look and it looked

13:23like it was a delivery but overall I had a great night's sleep and over in their room the bathroom

13:28doesn't wash with Naeem and Sarah I noticed that that glass was completely transparent see-through

13:34I'd expect some level of frosting to give privacy and the shower this morning was a bit disappointing

13:39as well I had to almost stand on the slope to be able to get enough water on me it just didn't have

13:45enough pressure I guess yeah the temperature it wasn't as hot as I would expect at full temp Phil

13:51and Jane also have bathroom blues they did find it a little bit awkward getting into the shower because

13:57of the position of the toilet yeah very little room there and that shower screen doesn't get it to

14:02open and the the shower control surround is very loose as well yes and also you can get the light to

14:09the mirror it's a bit dark while you're having a shave wasn't it downstairs breakfast prep is underway

14:16I'm not really got any qualms with breakfast this morning people come here for our food the sausages

14:21are on the way and when they get here Wow if you use that and someone says it all like the sausage and

14:26and with everyone seated Jack's on hand for the orders Jada Phil what can I get you I'll have the

14:36very English affair please could I please have the hash browns and sausages please I'll go for eggs

14:41for y'all yeah with orders in come on guys right breakfast is busy we need to have it ready the guests

14:47soak up the surroundings it really is breathtaking the view from here isn't it have you got a view from your

14:52room I've got a view of the garden so coming down here for breakfast first time I've seen that view

14:57yeah lovely did you guys have a room with a view yeah yeah we did what about you guys yeah you're

15:02making me quite jealous sorry sorry Chris I did feel a little bit sorry for Chris I didn't realize

15:07that he didn't have the amazing view that we got views reviewed the hot food hits the tables we got

15:15the English affair sunny side up for you now thank you eggs royale wow look at that it looks beautiful

15:20thank you very much Jack looks very good thank you wow that's exactly how I want my poached eggs to

15:28pour out the eggs to me look like they can only be free-range organic eggs to be that rich golden

15:34color how about your sausages to be honest I like mine a bit firmer my sausages combined with the red

15:39onions good choice tastes delicious it's a great combination yes what do you make of these beans do

15:45you think they were homemade or were they tinned I don't think they were homemade and I have to say I've

15:49had better beans in terms of the actual taste of things I was a bit let down sausages weren't that

15:56tasty and the beans you could almost tell they'd been microwaved every bit runny like mashed up

16:02together almost yeah cooking cut into it's the rooms under the knife the room itself was amazing but I

16:09think we were just a little bit disappointed with the bathroom weren't we it was the layout that was the

16:14main thing wasn't it just wasn't laid out very well you virtually have to go with the toilet to get in

16:18the bath didn't you so it wasn't great Naeim had a little gripe with the shower as well yeah the pressure

16:24and the temperature on the shower went great and I ended up having to stand on the slope of the bath

16:29oh did you almost be under the shower for me in my room the shower was was compact and there wasn't

16:35much room for maneuver wasn't it no I do think Neil and Jack will actually appreciate this kind of

16:41people yeah and they can put these things right now moving forward yeah I'd appreciate the honesty I was

16:47relieved to know other people thought the same well hopefully from now on you can trust my judgment a

16:51bit hmm breakfast finished it's time for the guests to tuck into the anonymous feedback forms how

16:58were your hosts at the Ryback Hotel very attentive it's got to be a 10 yep how clean was the Ryback

17:05Hotel the room was spotlessly clean I would like to score a 10 how were the facilities shower

17:11accessibility awkward bathroom mirror light doesn't work loose shower controls yeah but overall amazing

17:20location with absolutely stunning views seven seven yeah good selection of coffee and tea it was a real

17:27shame there wasn't a view of the lake from the bedroom and the bathroom was quite compact and

17:31quite tight I'm gonna score eight beautiful view finishing touches required shower pressure temperature

17:42and layout disappointing better planning bathroom frosting bedside electrics and let's go with the six

17:49how did you sleep I slept very well up until about seven o'clock when I heard a lorry delivering I think it

17:56some food and drink I would like to score eight slept well one noise from bar stopped we're gonna

18:05sure happy to go for a nine yeah so how was breakfast perfectly poached eggs some ingredients

18:13slack quality and taste maybe an eight sounds about right here exceptional egg quality beans

18:22watery happy with a nine yeah so final question would you stay here again yes I would yeah I mean look at

18:31those views fantastic I'm lacking a view of the lake and the size of the bathroom no unfortunately for me it's a

18:39no to me it doesn't represent good value for money yeah no for me too now the guests must pay what they

18:48think their stay was worth happy yeah the cash will be kept under wraps until the end of the competition

18:54but for now Neil and Jack can see if the rybeck reaps rewards let's have a look how clean was the rybeck

19:02hotel and we've got a 10 yes that's what we're here for Neil the room was spotlessly clean I'd

19:08definitely say we go the extra mile for every room how were the facilities and eight let's see what

19:14they've got to say good selection of coffee and tea so that's a positive yeah shame about the lack of a

19:20lake view well Chris got the short straw there we didn't give him a lake view we can't have 27 lake views

19:26the bathroom was too tight and compact I agree totally with that comment the shower cubicle is

19:32one of the smaller cubicles how did you sleep an eight and eight I had a great night's sleep but was

19:39a walk around 7am by a van delivery fair comment but a lot of the deliveries coming big hotels come in

19:45the morning thanks for a great stay pleasure having you thank you and let's find out if Chris will stay

19:51here again okay here goes no shell shot yeah it must be his cup of tea one down two to go how are the

20:01facilities they give us seven it does seem like a very low score seven shower accessibility awkward

20:08well it's a shower over a bath bathroom mirror right didn't work we all the maintenance man I never

20:15checked it okay I never checked the mirror loose shower controls I've never noticed the loose

20:20amazing location and stunning views okay so finished off well how did you sleep and nine

20:27that is a good sleep slept well once noise from bar stopped our quiet times are from 11 till the

20:33morning how was breakfast it's a nine nine's good exceptional egg quality I'm happy with that

20:39however beans were runny beans are beans so beans are induced do you think they're gonna stay at the

20:46Ryback again 100% yes I'm happy with that amazing happy with that let's get into the next one okay

20:53then here goes how are your horse at the Ryback Hotel 10 yeah brilliant very attentive I'm real happy

21:00with that yeah I'm happy with that I'm happy with that overall how are the facilities a six beautiful view

21:07it's good really good yeah finishing touches required hard will work in hotel unless he decorated it every

21:13time a customer checked out there's no way you can keep it like that shower pressure temperature and

21:20layout disappointing it's really high quality shower valve bath shower head and screen and layout

21:27disappointing I wonder what they mean by that we're gonna have to get them to elaborate on that I think

21:30better planning bathroom frosting it's an issue that will address itself in the future that

21:35bedside electrics I agree with that sockets above are easier for yeah how was the breakfast

21:41eight and eight and okay it's really perfectly porched eggs absolute positive some ingredients lack

21:49quality and taste sausages hope you have a great stay thank you bye-bye would you stay here again no

21:59wow don't know what more we could have done there's hotels like this charging three times what we're

22:05charging around here I think we need some clarification on the comments we've been given and I'd like to

22:11see that on payment day next time when Chris hosts hi Chris how are you doing you're all right

22:17some guests lose their spark for me not having mains power is a bit of an issue isn't it it is and

22:23others are wheeled in now oh hey yeah that's my girl
