00:00hey guys welcome back to the prizes once again this is your host and in today's video i'm going
00:08to be doing yet another anime review today i'm going to be talking about school life
00:17all right now school life from what i've read or as you can call it gakugurashi that's the japanese
00:24name itself what this is a horror psychological turn slice of life anime that is in short it's
00:36basically around this this little high school girl who lives at this private school right she
00:44actually lives in a school and she spent times at the school living club alongside fellow members
00:49friends you know um she's basically living in the school during the zombie outbreak that
00:56overwhelmed the city but that's the the simplest way to put it but well let's get into it because
01:03a lot to unpack here in this anime and i'm glad to go through it in depth because there's a lot
01:12i gotta say in terms of like the storytelling and your main character is yuki she uses you know
01:20dirty pink hair little one happy cheerful now here's the the weird shit when it comes to character due to
01:28the um the zombie outbreak it really affected her mentally and she had like a mental breakdown due to
01:36it and she ended up like creating like like a fantasy around like in her like this delusion of what is
01:44going on thinking that everything is normal you know her friends and teachers are alive right there is
01:52sort of like mental stuff here to do with this where the brain can't process all the information or too
01:59much stress or something it's like something to do with an actual medical condition
02:03but it was like touch upon it here in a way that i did not really expect because watching it in
02:10the first episode two episodes i think like up to like around halfway into the show right i was watching
02:17i was wondering like all this and this zombie outbreak and you know she's with all these other characters
02:24and i think to myself like so they're just trying to pretend that everything
02:33is normal and live like normal while the zombies are outside or something i'd say like from the
02:41first episode i i really did not get it like what it was actually doing with the characters like in
02:50terms of like psychologically it really did went over my head and it wasn't like until like later on
02:58coming to the end behind me i actually figured it out and by then i was like well you know so slowly
03:06she realizes the you know the truth around her surroundings but she acts oblivious about it
03:12you know what sometimes in some episodes later on in the show she might have a panic attack on some
03:19occasions where she breaks down she she's looking at what's really in front of her however since
03:25leaving the school she has so weak coming terms to reality and becomes more useful to the group
03:32you know much more of a dependable character and such um i guess i can take the one because there's
03:38something that has something to do with the you know what i said earlier with the anime being cut
03:45short at the first season all right so outside her you have the next character kurumi everywhere
03:52ever could be but she is a twin tail girl she's one who's like the the muscle of the group no she's
04:02not on the dangerous mission she carries on her shovel at all terms terms of like you know for zombie
04:08encounters um that has mainly to do with the fact that i think it was a saint or something but someone
04:16who was like in one of the upper classes was you know she was like trying to get the thing on and um
04:26when the zombie outbreak occurred he was infected he tried to attack her and she killed up the shovel
04:32so it kind of like gives you a backstory of why she uses the shovel and it kind of like makes it a
04:38feeling right she's a shovel to like beat starting zombies so yeah i think she's probably the most
04:45interesting character after you because of the art she goes through later on in the show like past the
04:54halfway point you know with her going out and doing the more dangerous missions and her actually doing
05:02more the the heavy lifting like physically when she's fighting the zombies she gets bitten by a zombie
05:11fight megumi which i will get to in a second spoiler alert i'll have to go there due to the nature of this
05:21story so if you guys do one spoilers you might want to skip through this part she gets cured by the
05:27antidote but her body remains cool and she's ignored by other zombies suggesting that the antidote
05:33it didn't work properly or it just had like a different effect on her it's not like making her immune
05:39so much now there is more to it in the manga chapters which i'll have to get to later on in the video
05:48because of reason that i mentioned earlier the next character you have is yuri wakasa now this character
05:56she is the one who's like i would say the house right the manager you know she she has to look out
06:04out for the food visions the electricity and you know teach another character and so on so she is like
06:12you know with the governor of the group you know the or the big brother or in this case the big sister
06:17now while she is in the very high manager position amongst the others in the group she still is very
06:27mentally fragile i know she gets unstable quite a bit later in the um show you know when the stuff gets
06:35more serious also there's this weird bit about her she has a younger sister named woo who she thought
06:42she rescued from an elementary school but then it reveals that it was yuki stuck teddy bear which
06:48ended up like you know affecting her or something then you have mickey laoiki however you pronounce
06:56that name around about it probably and this is a blonde hair girl who's uh yeah below the other girls
07:03right and she's nicknamed me cool by yuki much to this me she was rescued by the school living club
07:11while they were scouting a shopping mall right where she had been living since the update and she
07:19she initially was hesitant with the group she wasn't getting along with how yuki was acting and how the
07:30others in the group was with the way she acts but later on she you know comes to understand it
07:37and you know becomes more friendly to them after finding out more of their troubles and such
07:44um she's more aware of certain things than the others not with how she reacted to the whole outbreak
07:52her backstory has to do mostly with she was with one of her friends when they had to go and
07:58hang out in one of the stores she was worried about going back outside so they had to like
08:04spend their time inside the store she was caught up with um in the store during the outbreak when
08:10happened she was a friend and she was worried about the whole situation i was gonna like
08:19if they won't be able to survive if they come out so she asked her friend to stay in the um close
08:24of the area where they luckily they had like a bunch of food and such water but her friend got fed up of
08:34like staying there the whole time understandably being confined and not going back out to like
08:40try and get out so friend left her and her dog which is by the way the dog um don't even stack her mouth
08:49the dog um there's an interesting thing with the what they do with the dog but it has to do with the
08:56the manga that it sort of like violates the manga's um stuff in a way that i found was like disingenuous
09:05to the the manga but watching it in the anime i was like okay i also want to get a slide for that
09:13in that aspect um but yeah the dog in the anime is portrayed as another character but in the manga
09:23he's actually just a flashback so there's that to it i didn't really like find that as a bad decision
09:32because they did a lot of interesting stuff with the dog in the anime so i'll give them props for how
09:39they handle it going with that decision aside from that going back to the characters you have
09:45megumi right this is the one who was like the major key alert for the anime she is the teacher and
09:52advisor for the school living club and she was affectionately called meguni by a student said now
10:01she was to form the club to protect the girls when the outbreak initially occurred and she was shown to
10:07be a teacher with rather little persons you know often being taught by girls this was like due to
10:13the um whole thing with use to um mental delusions that they were playing at the beginning of the show
10:20you know i'm halfway into the show they reveal that she was actually infected shortly after roaming the
10:26school club forced herself into a hidden part of the school before completely succumbing to the
10:32zombie-ness and then she's eventually found she ends up infecting kumi before being put down by mickey
10:38that was one thing that really did fucked me up watching it the anime showed the first
10:46few episodes is that how they they portrayed it it really did felt like like it was actually there
10:53but then you know i realized oh it was just mind games that they were doing with you so yeah so i think
11:00that's pretty much it for the main characters there there's not really much else there's like some
11:05side characters here and there but they're not really all that much you know people that was shown
11:14in the show like in the beginning before the update or flashback stuff um then there's other characters
11:21that have to do with the continuation of story but that's after the anime stops because the anime
11:27stops after the first season but the story itself and the manga it it's still ongoing up till now
11:33which is impressive because this is like several years in almost like a whole decade you know that i
11:40think the manga said that it started like around 2012 the anime started in 2015 right tell you how big
11:47this is this even got a live action in january 2019 um except it's one of those live actions you know
11:58japanese low budget pretty much like fanfare stuff um it didn't have anything impressive or standing out
12:06to it just like like people on youtube could have probably gather some people on a camera and
12:14pretty much replicate what the live action for this did you know so it's nothing like too special the fact
12:22i got live action is still pretty interesting so it shows that this anime is up there but the ironic
12:30stress in this um that while i do think this anime should get more recognition i don't think this anime is
12:38underrated because of the certain elements in the story that gets changed up and how the narrative is
12:46but i do think it's very still very well done and has a very nice way of how it sets up the characters
12:56and how it plays off of them i had to read the manga because i was curious about the story and what these
13:04characters will know what happened to them after the first season where did they go what did they do
13:10and i can't really fault you know the anime itself for that lack of continuation because it's on the
13:18studio you know they say they didn't get enough blu-ray sales so they had no choice they're like
13:23you know we're not getting the money so we're gonna cut the code right you know if we got the money we
13:28could have continued you know so yeah but i will have to say the big detractors that this anime did
13:35and what i noticed as to why did it is the you know changing up the narrative elements in the story
13:43right i mentioned earlier the parts with the dog right they they made him a more recurrent character
13:51like almost like a supporting character even though in the manga he was just a flashback
13:57right and they saw like did most of them for that another bit the anime did was it excluded certain
14:07narrative elements and even a subplot that has to do with a helicopter um you know scouter coming
14:16into the area the school looking for people coming into the um the mall where they were at looking for
14:24survivors and then he passed back by the school and he's like oh and then he like crashes on them
14:32blow up whatever hell um that's in the manga but it's not in the anime you know that whole
14:39plot and it's a subplot in itself because there's a bit of stuff that goes on between it but it was
14:46removed from the anime and i don't understand why i don't know if it was probably due to the
14:51the short minute enough it'd been a 12 episode format but even if that was the case they should
14:58have just negated all of the stuff that they were doing with the dog and we've got more more time
15:04slot to add that in but i'd probably stress that what is that they probably we did not add that in the
15:13anime why they excluded it probably has to be with the fact that how the anime itself portrays the
15:20cats and the story it's portraying it as a isolated incident something that's very contained right
15:28these people like like there's these like four or five girls in the school right and they're like
15:35locked off and they're like all by themselves and most of the stuff that you see happens in this
15:40in the confront of the school with the flashbacks even and then there's the zombies outside there's
15:46really any bits of them getting in the fights with the zombies and such right but there's mostly them
15:53contained by themselves in the school and interacting with each other as if it's normal and not like
16:02trying to like stay alive and when you have that sort of like approach of you know isolation and containing
16:10the story it makes sense like thematically to like you know do away with some of those parts and i get it
16:24but at the same time you also like taking away like story elements from the manga itself and making it seem
16:34less faithful to the manga story wise so i do get thematically what they were going for i still disagree with
16:45you know them doing it for the sake of the the accuracy to the source material i would say
16:54but outside of that i would say this anime is bangers outside of that right you get into the second half
17:01where things start to pick up and it you know when you start to figure out more and more what was going
17:07on and they don't reveal everything to you you know um you get bits of information and pieces about
17:16other stuff and then you find out more about the characters and you also get a little bit of
17:21information on the zombie virus outbreak in itself right um that all um the school itself it was like
17:32i don't know for this sort of situation happening you know the school they're in and then you also get
17:40a pretty bizarre scenario where i mentioned earlier when i was discussing the different characters you had
17:47the um the twin haired um girl she she gets bitten and then there's that stuff happens towards the end
17:57and you know she covers because they get they got the medicine and then they you know in the ending
18:04well this is like the ending because the anime itself stops here they they basically like you know
18:11leaves the the school right they had this really nice way how they wrapped up the the story and
18:19the ending of the episodes and i'd say is a pretty heartwarming story with the characters right
18:27um there is some spicy elements to it um there's nothing that that much i would say as in terms of
18:34what i've reviewed in the past though they made the girls look spicy but only like certain parts um
18:42there's nothing too much of a point where you want to like you know question like oh again a bit hot
18:48you know it's not that level well at least so far um but yes they for the most part the characters
18:57there they handle themselves and they match a picture and they get out right and the anime stops there
19:05okay so what you have now is the rest is purely manga and the interesting thing there is that
19:14when you go to watch it you like read the manga after watching the anime i think to get a continuation
19:19of the story that in a way it tends to make you understand more of the the characters
19:27the backgrounds the backgrounds though the world that they're in you know into the outbreak itself
19:32because later on in the anime they get more stuff on terms of like
19:41you know them shopping outside pastor school and get to see them meet more characters
19:49um it also gets pretty dark um although this anime was dark from the beginning right because you know
20:00it's a bit of horror psychological thriller um although i would slash up the horror bit because
20:05there's nothing that was scary in this which is like interesting thing i noticed a lot of these
20:09enemies that are described as horrors in the genre they're not really that horror i mean there's more
20:16psychological children yes i agree that slice of life yes but not horror um but yes there are some dark
20:23moments with the characters but when you read in the manga as it goes on past the you know that
20:29where that anime ended in the first season it gets more darker especially for i've read in some commentaries
20:38there's some more psychological crazy stuff that goes on with the characters you know how that that they
20:45leave the school and yeah um though they they end up finding out more stuff when they see new characters
20:52and all that stuff and then there's a fact where you have yuki or she already has that mental capacity
21:02stuff going on with her that was thinking about stuff it's it's crazy it's dark um i might question
21:09myself if i actually go down it because it has a lot um it's going on for a long while now so
21:16i'm watching how it's playing out so far but that's all manga territory right remember this is anime
21:26territory right this is called anime video so i got to exclude that manga stuff but i just i just only
21:36brought it up in case if you guys want to check out more of this story because this has a lot to unpack
21:42for you if you go into the manga to get the rest of the story but if you're just an anime person and
21:48you just want to step up to the anime well you'll probably get a fairly satisfying view of the story
21:57um you know once you can get past the negation of that sub that i mentioned with the the research the
22:05survivor crew looking in a helicopter and the way how they added in the in the dog to get more you
22:12know emotional points in the to the arm story once you can look past those two like from my reviews like
22:20those two stuff mainly you'll probably enjoy this um i think you'll like this a lot the anime it does
22:28a pretty good job at capturing the characters the way they look you know in the voices the animation is
22:35pretty good i like the way it's shot i like the music with the two it's all done pretty well well produced
22:45such i have no complaints there um just aside from those two minor things well not so minor things
22:55depend on who you ask you know but overall i'm gonna just sum it up i'd say school life is a pretty
23:03good anime right if you're looking for something quick you know a quick slice of life in a disaster
23:11pandemic right um something might be more relatable now given the position that we're in in society
23:19as a whole nowadays it's probably more relatable to you um the story is very nice has a really nice
23:28touching ending for it um even though that's not the actual ending of the story just the ending of
23:34the anime given the circumstances that um happen with the anime from getting a second season if you like
23:44um disaster movies or like you know those sort of like zombie outbreak stuff you're gonna have a
23:52good time watch but just note it's not that heavy in action it's more on character right so i'm gonna
23:59take a little bit patient with its pacing if you want to get more of the story um if you want to get
24:07like the whole story you know like me and you're really interested in what's going on and such and
24:13what happens afterwards then you're really gonna have to check that manga out as from what i've
24:19read i don't think there's any confirmation of this game in a season two although i will say
24:26i won't really fault them too much for not actually pushing for a season two because like i said the way
24:34the anime handles the storytelling it goes in more contained direction around the manga
24:41how the story actually is it's not that contained it's it has quite a lot going for it and i think
24:50if they will continue the story in the anime they will continue it with season two and three and
24:57whatever it will end up doing more friendly service to the the story as a whole in my opinion because of
25:04how they choose to approach it and know them wanting to like soften it up and you know drop certain subplots
25:14and such um i think that would be disingenuous um i could be wrong though maybe they they announced
25:22season two and three and they come out and they're like bangers but in my opinion from watching the anime and
25:26how wholesome they it was portraying the story i just don't really feel like you know continuing the
25:36anime would um really do it for the story it'll just continue it in the way the anime um sees it you know
25:47where they negate certain stuff and they they change up certain bits of the characters for it to fit the
25:54anime narrative you know and while i have mentioned what i am talking about is quite a lot this is
26:00actually quite common in the anime right you know when you go back into the manga side
26:07basically for like any big anime out there there's a lot that excluded like for now for example there's a
26:16lot more in the manga for now too same with one piece same with dragon ball any big anime you're talking
26:23about but the only difference is that those are big franchises that have ongoing storytelling right
26:32both anime and manga this one just stops at the anime so there's you know while there's a lot more there
26:42to look at over here with this anime there's a lot less and there's you know a lot less to criticize and
26:50more anyways guys i'm gonna sum up i would say this is a good anime right at the end of the day i enjoyed
26:59watching it i enjoyed the way how it portrayed it's the story despite the shortcomings i'd say it's
27:07worth watching if you guys want to check it out um if you want the full story or just read the manga
27:13but if you're looking for a quick thing one season thing you should check this anime out give it a shot
27:21right so yeah guys that pretty much sums up the video overall um let me know what you think in the
27:27comment section down below but do you have you seen school life um do you like it do you hate it do
27:35you think it did a good job you know handling the story in the um manga or do you think it did a bad
27:42job do you want the season two in order to be continued anime or you're just fine with the manga be sure to let
27:48me know the comment section down below and be sure to check out my other videos and i guess i'll see you
27:54guys later
