00:00One of our great co-workers, Joe Hawks, he's our Swiss Army knife.
00:05The man.
00:05He is the Swiss Army knife.
00:07He is the screwdriver, the scissors, two types of knives,
00:11and there's a toothpick in there.
00:13If you need something here at Odyssey San Francisco, you go to Joe.
00:16And he gets it done.
00:18We had a 60-second conversation about injuries and the 49ers,
00:23and he was kind of riffing about, well, you know, both of the torn ACL,
00:27that's got to be on the strength and conditioning guy, right?
00:30And I was laughing, and he's like, C.J. West, broken thumb,
00:34that's on the strength and conditioning guy, right?
00:36And I was like, oh, my God, this is like what all the fans are railing against.
00:41And I said to him, I said, you know what?
00:43This is like all the people who blame Bob Melvin for the fact that Marco Luciano
00:48can't play a position eight years into his career.
00:52Oh, that's on Bob Melvin.
00:53And Elliot Ramos doesn't know the infield fly rule.
00:57That's on Bob Melvin.
00:59And you can look at a number of different things that have gone wrong,
01:02and you can say, oh, that's on Bob Melvin.
01:05Is it really?
01:06Is it really on Bob Melvin?
01:08The fact that, you know, professional baseball players don't know the rules,
01:12and your 17-year-old phenom, who's quietly now 24, still has no position
01:18and can't come up to the major leagues because you've already got four DHs.
01:23So that was kind of the thing, Mark, is we look at Bob Melvin
01:26and we blame him for X, Y, and Z.
01:30And, well, maybe he's to blame for X, but certainly not Y and Z.
01:33And the strength and conditioning guy for the Niners,
01:36they're the most injured team year in and year out.
01:39Okay, there might be something to it.
01:41Nick Bosa tears his ACL for the third time.
01:44You know what, strength and conditioning guy, you need to strengthen his ligaments.
01:48That's on you.
01:49And that's from somebody who doesn't even work out with the 49ers in the offseason.
01:54He works out in Florida.
01:55And ask John Feliciano about Nick Bosa's body.
01:58What about it?
01:59Yeah.
01:59He was all but, like, he had a bromance with Nick's body.
02:04Nobody takes care of themselves better than the Bosa's.
02:08John yesterday was like, oh, have you seen that body?
02:10We've talked to his mom.
02:12He won't eat anything different from one day.
02:15Like, he won't.
02:16That would be too fatty.
02:17Yeah, what was the thing he wouldn't do?
02:20He used to, you know, allow himself a slice of toast.
02:23He used to allow himself a slice of toast.
02:30Oh, no, babe.
02:32Used to.
02:33Yeah.
02:34So, yeah, like I have, you know, like we all do.
02:38We got the old friend's text thread.
02:41There's a WhatsApp deal with all my high school buddies.
02:43Oh, yeah.
02:44And there's one of them who does this every single time a Niner gets hurt, which, by the
02:49way, is like twice a weekend.
02:51Every time somebody gets hurt.
02:52Who is our strength and conditioning coach?
02:55Like, who is it?
02:56Now, here's the thing.
02:58I, I'm going to split the difference a little bit on, on your comment, because what you're
03:04saying is fair, but in a, in another world, so is what the fans are saying, because what
03:11else are they supposed to say?
03:13In other words, there are all kinds of reasons going on inside these teams that lead to success
03:21or failure, and we don't get to know 99% of those things.
03:26How could we?
03:27We're not there.
03:28And that's even those of us who have some sort of, like, sometimes access, right?
03:35There's that famous quote from David West after the Warriors won the title.
03:39It's like, you don't even know.
03:41Y'all don't even know what the hell went on this year.
03:43Um, how about when Draymond Green punches Jordan Poole and half the league is like, you
03:50don't even know that that happens three times a year, every year with every team.
03:54And I don't know if it's that bad or whatever.
03:55I doubt it, but you get, you get the implication.
03:58We don't know what's going on.
04:01So it's fair for a fan who doesn't know what's going on to point to the only things that they
04:08can see.
04:08And the only thing a Giants fan can see other than the ball being hit real hard by other
04:15players on other teams, other than that, the only thing that you can sort of see is, well,
04:21we're not hitting the ball.
04:23Well, so hitting coach, we're not pitching the ball.
04:26Well, so pitching coach, or we're doing weird stuff on the field.
04:32So head coach, or in this case manager.
04:35And then like, I even hear the things that people ask for, you know, guru does this a
04:42lot, flip the spread.
04:44Well, how do you, you don't even know that he's not, I don't even know that people flip
04:49the spread anymore, but Logan Webb admitted a few weeks ago, he goes, Bob yells at us.
04:54Yeah.
04:55Bob yells like go in there and yell.
04:58No, he does.
04:59He does.
05:00So I understand that when you say what you say can sort of make a fan feel like, well,
05:06wait a minute, then can the manager ever be at fault?
05:09Sure.
05:10Of course.
05:10But I tend to look at with a head coach or a manager in professional sports, what I look
05:16at is, have they lost the guys?
05:20That's what I'm looking at.
05:21Have you lost the guys?
05:23It's not so much, I mean, sure, if you're out there making the wrong pitching change
05:27every time, okay, but that can blow up in your face no matter who you're sticking in
05:31there.
05:32Like, so have they lost the guys?
05:35Gabe Kapler, for example, he lost the guys.
05:38Pussoydos.
05:39He lost the guys.
05:40Kyle Shanahan has never lost the guys.
05:42Steve Kerr has maybe lost the guy.
05:45He hasn't lost the guys.
05:46He lost one of the guys.
05:47Um, and we'll see where that whole situation goes, but if you haven't lost the guys, then
05:54largely you're usually in the right place.
05:57And I personally don't believe that Bob Melvin has lost the guys.
06:02So I'm going to buy what you're saying, which is, I think most fans are pointing at him
06:07simply because they don't know where else to point.
06:09And you can point at him.
06:11And I think that you're not really important.
06:13And for each of you fans out there, 888-957-9570.
06:19We'll take your phone calls right now.
06:23Bob Mel, yes or no, next year.
06:25And why?
06:27Why?
06:28Like, back your point.
06:29We would love to hear from you.
06:31Bob Mel, you in or you out just for next year.
06:36888-957-9570.
06:39Here's what I want to say.
06:41I'm very largely with you.
06:42I have been all year long.
06:45I have not thought that Bob Mel was going anywhere.
06:48There were some conversations, call it maybe three, four weeks ago, that weren't direct,
06:55but I very much took them as, I think I know where this organization is looking,
07:00and they're not looking at him in terms of their frustration and what they want to do next.
07:04But let me just say this.
07:08I'm not as confident today as I was a week ago.
07:13Wow.
07:14About his...
07:15I think he's going to be back.
07:17But I am not sure.
07:20I am not sure.
07:21And it goes way deeper than what we're about to play for you.
07:25But you listen to this, and you tell me.
07:28This is from the clear and present leader of the clubhouse.
07:34I know Adamus and Chappie, they're the day-to-day, the everyday guys, they're leaders.
07:39But there's the homegrown dog, ace of the staff, man who's been in charge, vocal leader of the San Francisco Giants for a while now.
07:50And it's Logan Webb.
07:51And I want you to listen to what he had to say on NBC Sports Bay Area yesterday.
07:58First of all, he's talking about this particular group.
08:02These teammates, this is what he says.
08:04Every year's different.
08:05I think for this year's probably the most frustrating.
08:07There's one thing about Buster Posey is I don't think he's okay with losing.
08:11I don't think he's okay with even being 500.
08:14He wants to win.
08:15And I'm not going to play his job because it's not my job.
08:18But I don't think he's okay with this.
08:20I don't think there's a lot of people okay with this in this clubhouse.
08:22Okay.
08:24So, let's stack those comments up.
08:27This is the most talented team I've ever played on.
08:30This is the most frustrating season so far.
08:33We had a lot of things go wrong.
08:35We let them stay wrong.
08:37And Buster Posey is not okay with this.
08:42Okay.
08:43Add all that up.
08:44And I'm going to tell you, and again, I'm not just reacting to these comments from Logan Webb.
08:50But if you add all of that up, how can you firmly with certainty say that Bommel is going to be back?
08:59And let me add one other thing to think about.
09:01If Bommel was like, certainly, certainly going to be back, why wouldn't have Buster Posey said that by now?
09:08Why wouldn't you come out and say it?
09:10I mean...
09:11Now's not the time.
09:12Why not?
09:13Well, you already extended him.
09:14So, do you really need to come out and give him another vote of confidence?
09:18Sure.
09:18Because the question's being asked.
09:19I promise you, if Buster Posey is talking to any media member, it's the number one question being asked.
09:25So, what's your answer?
09:26If the answer was, he's back next year, somebody would have reported that.
09:30Or that would have been broadcast wherever Buster was talking.
09:33They haven't done that yet.
09:34All I'm saying is the silence around Bob right now isn't very silent.
09:39It's not silent.
09:41And Stiney and Goo, during our crossover, Stiney played the truncated Bob Melvin comments after the game.
09:48And you can hear his frustration.
09:51And Bob is smart enough and he's veteran enough to know exactly what's going on.
09:57And if you want to go back two weeks ago, almost two weeks to the day, and you talked a lot about it, I'll never forget that Friday night.
10:04We'll always have that.
10:05The Pat Bailey walk-off salami that got you right on the cusp of a playoff.
10:11And it was a culmination sensation of a great two-and-a-half-week run.
10:16And since then, they have been absolute dog-schmidt.
10:21Dog-schmidt.
10:22And last night was just another example of that.
10:25And so, Bob's not only frustrated with what's happened, but he also is well aware of what this means for him and for everybody.
10:33Let's go to Mark in Piedmont.
10:34Mark, thank you for the call.
10:36What do you think?
10:38Yeah, hey, guys.
10:39Enjoy your show.
10:41I think Logan Webb just contradicted you totally, Willard.
10:45Melvin, did he have the best talent in the world at the Padres with Soto and Tatis and Machado?
10:52And did he do well there?
10:55No.
10:56So, it's not about the clubhouse.
10:59But, Mark, I'm confused.
11:00What do you mean Logan contradicted me?
11:02Well, I'm confused.
11:04Logan said we have the best talent he's ever seen.
11:08Yeah.
11:09Melvin had the best talent in the Padres.
11:11If Logan's correct and they had the best talent that he's ever seen with the Giants when he's been here, then it's not the clubhouse.
11:21But you lose the clubhouse because you don't know how to manage, you don't know how to pick the right players, and you make the wrong game-time decisions.
11:28I'm not saying otherwise, Mark.
11:30That's why I'm confused by the whole contradiction idea.
11:33I agree with you.
11:34That's what Logan's saying.
11:36And what I'm telling you right now is that for four weeks, I've stood on a box and said, you can think Bob Melvin should go.
11:43I'm telling you he won't.
11:44And I am now moving my position.
11:46I still think he's a slight favorite to stay, but I am no longer convinced, and Logan's commentary is only part of that.
11:55But I agree with you, Mark.
11:58Well, that's fair, then.
11:59I think he's gone.
12:01You can't have a season like they just have, like a roller coaster, and tell me that he's not gone.
12:08I mean, if they were to continue to win a few, but, I mean, 9 out of 11, or 10 out of 12, losing at the end of the year.
12:16The other thing is the manager's the one who decides to put the players on the field, right?
12:22And if he doesn't put the right players on the field, right, then they're not going to win.
12:27There are computers that are partially doing that now, Mark.
12:30I mean, that is just a sign of the times in baseball.
12:33Well, yes, Bomell has a lot of say, and certainly he's also the final say with making pitching changes and things like that.
12:44But as far as lineups and even the plan in terms of what reliever's going to come in,
12:49you'd be shocked at how much that's computers and how much that's decided before a series even starts, let alone a game.
12:57That's fair.
12:58Maybe not be aware of that.
13:00That's very fair, Willie.
