01:08um and uh so they're watching the giants game last night and the game kind of starts weaving toward the
01:15end and the giants lose the baseball game and even though it was one of the best offensive performances
01:22of the entire year by the san francisco giants apparently uh aurora looks at lucas and goes
01:29so how come they still can't hit and that's a great question that's a great that's a great i don't
01:38think it's going to be a very good ball game how would you have answered aurora why why can't they
01:44why still can they not hit it's uh it's too nuanced to really just say it's because they're too old
01:52they're not too old but i do think that either their bat speeds have slowed down or they are just
01:59getting overwhelmed by really good pitchers or some of them just aren't that good and i look at the big
02:06three adamus devers and chapman and that's where i would assign the majority of the blame because
02:10your job when you make that much money is to be that guy you have to be that guy and
02:16the other ones
02:17i just don't think they're they're good enough like bader and jung who lee's a head scratcher like
02:22okay let's put jung who lee aside for a second because we didn't like he had never played major
02:27league baseball before until two years ago and so um i think that's a separate subject but each of the
02:33the guys that you just mentioned maybe even hold out elliot ramos homegrown and then popped on the
02:41scene two years ago makes the all-star team after a lot of years in the minors and then you
02:46know the
02:46experience since then has been kind of up and down largely it's been pretty good offensively and pretty
02:51bad defensively um but he's struggling okay let's put that aside those names you just brought up
02:58like this giant's infield is all just wildly accomplished and and completely set in stone
03:05as to who they are right and none of them are 150 hitters so why are they all hitting 150
03:12and i know
03:13not all of them are hitting 150 but like why yeah why louisa rise is the only one who sort
03:18of looks
03:19like himself yeah he's still hitting what 300 or there about sack fly last night to get it done
03:24i it's hard to really pinpoint i think that devers and this hamstring situation that might be a part
03:32of his struggles willie adamas traditionally is a slow starter to the year and this is even slower i
03:38think than last year's slow start and matt chapman is the one where i'm kind of scratching my head i
03:43don't know why he's not hitting at his usual level although he well he suddenly now is he's so he's

03:50at 262 okay ops is north of 750 and he's got the one home run yeah chapman's problem is that
03:57he's
03:58yelling at people in the infield and the balls he's throwing are kind of going a little little hot
04:02there's a little all over the place seems um you know angry or or whatever rubbed raw i'm not sure
04:10exactly you know stealing bases when a little leaguer would know not to try to steal a base um that's
04:15been chapman's issue but yeah adamas uh what do we got right now 214 um rafi devers is hitting 190
04:26with an ops under 600 yeah and that's where i mean the batting average you know i'm old school i
04:32actually think that there's value in that but if i'm looking at those three you want the thump and i'm
04:38not seeing a lot of thump like last night in the ninth you had adamas go opposite field an absolute
04:44rocket shot off the wall and right i cannot remember a bunch of those type of exit velo
04:51rocket shots from your core three and i'd have to look at all the stat cast and bore people with

04:58those numbers but just the eye test there aren't a lot of at bats where you go man that ball

05:52seven game win streak and everything's fine like that could happen it could happen i doubt it but that
05:57sure okay that could happen um it's not about panic but it's completely fair right now as a fan to

06:06it about frustration because this is a difficult watch and i do think that you don't have to squint
06:14that hard to see some things on the roster that have been constructed poorly and so i'll tell you who
06:24paul bean is paul bean handles the analytics department for the san francisco giants and i want
06:34to know what the hell's going on in there in the analytics department i want to know what the hell's
06:38going on in there what are you what numbers are you running and what advice is it spitting out
06:48for you to give people and that goes to your lineup that goes to the decisions you make in the
06:56game
06:56that goes to who you trade for that goes to who you sign as a free agent all of that
07:05is coming from
07:07something in the analytics department that then spits out hey call buster and tell the giants to go do
07:15blank and he has been he was kind of elevated to a vice president of ops and analytics like the
07:24the
07:24leader he was elevated he was promoted last year but he's been kind of high level in charge of the
07:31analytics department since late in the bocce era so we're running on about eight nine years now
07:36i don't know paul and and i'm not like i hope this doesn't sound like i'm about to rip paul

07:42but this is a curiosity run here what is going on because what are we seeing you went to acquire
07:51rafi devers because he could hit the fastball and he doesn't hit the fastball and you went to badly
07:58go acquire jung hu lee because you thought he was this multi-pronged marketing central figure very good
08:08defensive player bat on ball bruce bocce and buster posey's absolute strategy keep the line moving
08:17make contact don't strike out bat to ball skills and last year jung hu lee was not terrible with that
08:26but let's be real about this what's the deal six years 113 million yay you're not getting roi
08:34you're not i don't care how big the jung hu crew is it's not working and you already had to
08:41move
08:41them out of center field right right and so if he's your corner outfielder and he's got zero home runs
08:46and he has no thump well you're giving up too many spots in your order for guys who are fitting

08:51bill including our guy louisa rise but he is exactly who you thought he would be your catcher has a

08:58hard time producing regularly at all your center fielder is a lot of fun to watch running around
09:04with his lavender sleeves but any hands to the heavens when you get a a flare for a base i

09:10ball hands to the heavens you've got your bottom five who are really struggling and your big three
09:16aren't producing the thump and you get a lead and then you can't hold it i love that harrison bader

09:34in more than a third of your bats the heavens are not what your problem is right now you have

09:48of swings that you with the whiff and bader and ramos are both among the top 40 or 45 in

09:56in that category adamus endeavors are literally right behind them yep between devers adamus bader
10:04and ramos you are talking about let me count them up 56 strikeouts on the season between those four
10:14players through 11 games do the math those four players are striking out over five times a game
10:23collectively tough to move the line i don't know you got guys striking out i don't know how to answer
10:30aurora i don't understand what's happening very well established big leaguers are not playing like
10:38big leaguers and certainly not to what the the level that they've established yeah the old back of the
10:44baseball card when you look at devers and you look at adamus and you realize he's going to play and

10:49600 at bats and he's got a great track record and when you're underperforming and multiple guys are
10:54then you have almost no chance to win so can we put this i i i want to put this

11:32something's broken in the baseball analytics department because a bunch of people are not
11:38doing what you hired them to do and they're all collectively doing it at the same time
