00:00I'm damn near something you're not allowed to be as a radio host.
00:05Disinterested?
00:05No.
00:06Apathetic?
00:07No.
00:08Silent?
00:10Speechless.
00:11Yeah, you're over there chewing on your nails.
00:14You can't do speechless.
00:15I can't carry this S.
00:17You're the guy.
00:18You talk.
00:19I make noises and crack jokes and occasionally cuss.
00:22And then, da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da.
00:26558.
00:27You ask me if I want to do it again?
00:28I say yes.
00:30Shoot your shot, and I'll see you tomorrow.
00:32You ever lying when you say yes?
00:34Usually.
00:37Do I want to do it again?
00:39Oh.
00:40Of course.
00:40I love my job, but if you offer me, like, a paid day off and two rounds of golf at
00:45Olympic,
00:46yeah, I'll take that.
00:47I forgot my frustration with the Giants.
00:50I forgot to keep going with our spelling bee game.
00:52You want to do another one real quick?
00:54Sure.
00:55I think the word is sucks.
00:58Um, no, but play the music, Randy.
01:00It's the semifinals of the National Spelling Bee, so we're testing dibs on major sports figures.
01:06Um, Jeff Samarja.
01:11Jeff.
01:12Yeah.
01:13Samarja.
01:14Can you use it in a sentence?
01:15Jeff Samarja used to pitch for the Giants.
01:18Okay.
01:19I thought you were going to say Jeff Samarja got tackled by, uh, Michael Morse.
01:24Jeff Samarja used to get tackled for a living when he played wide receiver at Notre Dame.
01:29Samarja.
01:30Samarja.
01:31S-A-M-A-R-D-Z-J-I-A.
01:39Samarja.
01:40Oh!
01:41Did you get the J-Z wrong?
01:43So close.
01:44Hova.
01:45Hova.
01:45I was going to say, yeah, you got the J-Z wrong.
01:48Man.
01:49Um.
01:49Samarja.
01:50By the way, uh, you didn't spell Jeff.
01:53We're not doing first names.
01:54Those have.
01:55G-O-F-F.
01:56Exactly.
01:57Not.
01:57No.
01:59You had it.
01:59S-A-M-A-R-D-Z.
02:03And you had it up to then.
02:05And then it's I-J-A.
02:08I-J-A.
02:09I think I went J-I-A.
02:10You did.
02:11G-I-A.
02:12Samarja.
02:14G-I-A.
02:14That's actually perfect to bring up J-Z.
02:16G-I-A.
02:17Yep.
02:18Um.
02:19Sorry.
02:200 for 2.
02:20J-Z.
02:21I got 99 problems and the Giants are all of them.
02:26It's a transition right there.
02:29All right.
02:30If you're just joining us, uh, the Giants have been swept by the Diamondbacks again.
02:34The final score today, 3-2.
02:36Giants led the game for much of the way, 2-0.
02:39Um.
02:39Courtesy of a Luis Arise two-run single.
02:42Um.
02:43I think in the fourth inning.
02:44Uh.
02:45Things got a little bit off the rails after that.
02:47They worked through it.
02:48Close game.
02:49Diamondbacks take a 3-2 lead.
02:50Eighth inning.
02:52Willie Adamas with a one-out double to left.
02:54It was courtesy of the left fielder for Arizona.
02:56It was just a fly ball down the, uh, left field line.
02:59Uh.
03:00Lost it in the sun.
03:01Hit him in the chest.
03:02Turned into a double.
03:03Uh.
03:03Next batter, Luis Arise.
03:05Base hit.
03:06Left center field.
03:07Just out of the reach of the center fielder.
03:09So, Adamas had to hold up to see if it would fall.
03:12Once it fell, he got on his horse.
03:13Get on your horse.
03:14Um.
03:15But the ball's already on his way to the infield.
03:17Before Adamas touches third base.
03:20Hector Borg sends him.
03:22He's out by a mile.
03:23Two pitches later.
03:26Arise is picked off of second base.
03:28All of this with Casey Schmidt.
03:29Either in the on-deck circle or in the batter's box.
03:33Giants run their way.
03:34Right out of the ball game.
03:36And right out of town.
03:37I was at both Saturday and Sunday's ball games.
03:40If you had told me on my way to the car with a Grogu bobblehead and 18 runs scored over
03:48the last two games that they were about to get swept by the Arizona Diamondbacks, I'd
03:53have bet you a lot.
03:55I'd have bet you a lot.
03:56But this has arrived at such a level of frustration because I think everybody can see where there
04:04are sort of roster warts, roster misconstruction.
04:10But too often what's also happening with this team is they take those warts, which means that
04:16they don't have a lot of wiggle room to make mistakes, and then they make them.
04:21A lot of them.
04:23And so this is a combination of a roster with holes combined with constant mistakes.
04:31It's just a constant flow.
04:33And this is where I'm forced to meet you halfway because I've defended the situations of Tony
04:40Vitello all year long.
04:41But we're also dealing with a team right now that unfortunately he is in charge of and is
04:48just not buttoned up.
04:50We got people not hustling.
04:52We got people rounding third when they shouldn't.
04:56Don't know how many outs there are.
05:00You're getting picked off in situations like the whole thing.
05:06The whole thing.
05:08You know what I mean?
05:10The pitch like Trevor McDonald like is a young pitcher and I think he's been really good.
05:14I'm not sure what exactly happened.
05:17A couple times in the middle of this game, he didn't have what I would call a wild pitch.
05:23He uncorked a couple of pitches that if Daniel Susak had three arms, he wouldn't have been
05:28able to reach.
05:30I don't know what the hell, like if the ball slipped or what.
05:33I mean, we're talking.
05:36Just a bit outside.
05:38You hit the ball, dog.
05:39Like what the hell?
05:41Where are you throwing the baseball?
05:43Home plate's over there.
05:45Yeah.
05:46It happens.
05:47But there was a couple wild.
05:48It doesn't.
05:49There was a couple wild misses for sure.
05:52Um, you know, you're in Philadelphia trying to defend a lead.
05:57This is going all the way back to the Patrick Bailey era.
06:00You're calling the same pitch nine times in a row until somebody walks it into right field
06:04for, for a game tying knock.
06:07There's just, this is too much.
06:11You're asking too much of the fans right now.
06:13Right.
06:14And even to, to, to stick with you.
06:16So just look at the late game today where Adamus shouldn't have run third base coach
06:21messed up and arise gets picked off the lead.
06:25He had, I was showing you during the break.
06:26I encourage you all to look at the highlight of arise getting picked off because the catcher
06:31does this slapping motion with the glove to the pitcher.
06:34Like dude, dinkle, dinkle.
06:36So in a second, pick him off.
06:38Yeah.
06:38He's got him.
06:39He's got him.
06:39And he was like dead to rights on the pickoff, but it's the one that I don't think we've talked
06:44about yet.
06:44Matt Gage comes in to replace McDonald and Corbin Carroll hits a little number and Gage
06:51saunters over to get it and just can't bend over quick enough.
06:54And it trickles through like a croquet ball going through a wicket.
06:57And now the bases are loaded with one out instead of second and third with two outs.
07:02Next guy, Perdomo sack fly.
07:04Arizona's got the lead unearned run.
07:07And that's your ball game.
07:12That's your ball game buttoned up.
07:14How much of this do you put on Tony?
07:16I mean, I like, I think I've made my position pretty clear.
07:20707 just texted in.
07:22This is a completely fair point.
07:23At some point, Giants players have to take accountability for not playing like professionals
07:27and playing like little leaguers.
07:29You can't put that on Tony.
07:30I totally agree.
07:31Like even, even take, let's just spotlight the play you're talking about.
07:35Louisa rise.
07:35You get picked off.
07:37You're in scoring position with two outs in the bottom of the eighth of a one run game
07:41with your best hitter at the plate.
07:42Like, is that not buttoned up and therefore a reflection of Tony?
07:48Or did a 30 plus year old veteran big leaguer just do something ridiculous?
07:56And I, I guess you could nod your head to both.
07:59You could nod your head to both, but most of the time when I'm looking at what's going
08:05on with Giants baseball this year, I feel, I feel bad for the position that Tony's in.
08:11I don't think he's been perfect.
08:13Far from it.
08:14I think that some of his learning curve was predictable.
08:17There are definitely some things that I'd love to see him do differently, but I also am giving
08:23him some, some space and some rope because he's a rookie manager who's never done this
08:28before.
08:29And I, I, I think he brings some things to the table.
08:34So you can put however much you want on him.
08:37I do think the majority of what has unfolded this year and frustrated Giants fans is either
08:44player driven or front office driven does not make Tony completely perfect, but I do not
08:51put a lot of what we're watching on Tony by tell ultimately the buck stops with Tony
08:55by tell you, you're the manager.
08:57And when you have Willie Adamas, not know how many outs there are, he's supposed to know
09:01how many outs there are, but that's a sign of your team not being buttoned up.
09:05Your veteran gets picked off a second when there's no business for you having a 15 foot
09:10lead or even bigger, where are you going to go?
09:13You're not stealing third with two outs, get close to the base.
09:16Don't even make a pick off a possibility with two outs.
09:19You mentioned it earlier, you're going on contact.
09:21So as the pitcher winds and delivers, you're going to take your secondary lead anyway and
09:25get to 20 feet off the base.
09:27They're not going to snap, throw down to second and get you.
09:30So where are you going?
09:31That's a mental mistake.
09:32All these mental mistakes, as they continue to add up to me, that does fall on the doorstep
09:39of the manager.
09:39And we talk about Steve Kerr and one of the big bones of contention this off season was
09:44the organization wants them to cut down on the turnovers.
09:47And you're Steve and you're thinking, yeah, 16 a game is too many.
09:51Am I supposed to like yell at Draymond every time he turns it over?
09:55That's the question, I think, that I'd love to dig into a little bit more.
09:59Yeah, Grandy, what's up?
09:59I know we're up against it, but really quick, I know you were wondering if Tony Vitello was
10:03asked specifically about Borg, not just what happened on the play.
10:07Our very own Ken Luttrell covering the game down at Oracle today.
10:10I asked him, he was there for the postgame and he said, no, no one specifically asked Tony
10:15Vitello about Hector Borg and what happened there.
10:17I'm not going to, listen, I wasn't there.
10:21So I'm not going to, I'm not going to fire on the assembled media when I wasn't in the
10:26room and I don't know the vibe of what's been said and what's taking place.
10:29But that is surprising to me that his name did not come up in the postgame press conference.
10:35It feels like a question that needs to be asked right now.
10:37And it feels like something that he should, Tony should be addressing this.
10:40I don't even know if that's Tony's call.
10:43That's the other thing.
10:44I don't even know how that works.
10:45I've never, I've never worked around a team before that, that's had to question the status
10:51of a base coach in the middle of the year.
10:53I got no idea.
10:56Um, but you can weigh in on the eight at eight, nine, five, seven, nine, five, 70.
11:01How does Tony fit into all this for y'all?
11:04Like how much do you put on Tony?
11:05This is, this is a, this is a rough season to say the least.
