00:00I'm going to freely admit in this conversation, it's kind of stupid, but it's how I feel.
00:06Like, if baseball teams, and we learned this, we learned this from Tim Kirkjian on this show,
00:13who stated to us last week, I can't tell you how many times a baseball team will approach the deadline
00:20and within the last few days they'll have a baseball game.
00:24And they'll go, if we win tonight, we're going to buy.
00:30And if we lose, we're going to sell.
00:33As stupid as that sounds, like you're going to have the whole season, 162 games,
00:39you're going to have them hinge on one game, but then again, you get a team like the Giants this year,
00:45and you kind of get it. You kind of get it.
00:47You're like, dude, if y'all had beaten Pittsburgh last week and had a winning record,
00:52if you had won that game that was tied late, Tyler Rodgers couldn't get the ball out of his glove,
00:59and then there was a grounder to second, and they threw it at Tyler Rodgers, and it hit a runner,
01:03remember that stupid rally, and they lost the game 3-1 or whatever it was?
01:08If they had won that game, and they had taken that momentum into the next day,
01:12and that was deadline day, would the Giants have gone about this differently?
01:16Here's why I ask. I sort of feel the fan version of that right now.
01:21It was like two nights ago, you win two out of three in New York, you go to Pittsburgh,
01:27you've got a 4-1 lead, you're like, okay, maybe there's going to be a little boogie here.
01:33And then they blow it, and Randy Rodriguez blows the save, and you fall back under .500,
01:38and you're like, thanks for the reminder, you're not good, and this isn't going anywhere.
01:44And then you win two in a row, and you do have a winning record again as you go into the off day
01:49and a fun plane flight home, and the Nationals are coming to town.
01:52I'm doing this pendulum swing.
01:54But while I admit to you that, yeah, this is still very, very, very likely not heading anywhere cool
02:02as far as the postseason, as a fan, I want you to hang in there until you're really super, super dead.
02:11Until the coffin is nailed shut.
02:13You've got to hang in there.
02:15Now, you've given some of your bullpen away, but I think there are little things that you can do,
02:19and I would start with not starting Kiwi Tang on Friday night when you get home.
02:24That makes a lot of sense for me, and it also goes to where you may not want to just bring guys up
02:30because you want to take a look.
02:32You're not at that point yet, and this is not necessarily Bryce Eldridge,
02:36but if you bring Bryce up at whatever point, you're going to want him to play every day
02:40and really get a hard look at life in the bigs, and you're not in that spot yet.
02:45You mentioned the Mets are in a little bit of a free fall, having lost four in a row,
02:49and now you sit five games back of the wild card.
02:52I mentioned this before on Monday to Evan where if you just go out and you win series
02:57and you've got San Diego, that's a direct head-to-head situation where you take two of three
03:04from San Diego, that's a game, and you've got seven against them,
03:07and if you go five and two, that's three games right there that are real gains.
03:11What if you swept them?
03:13I know, I know, I know, I know, I know.
03:14I know, they won't.
03:15But what if you did?
03:17Yeah.
03:17What if you did?
03:18You're in the third wild card.
03:19Can't you just hang in there until you know that you didn't?
03:25And I know that they would say, well, we are.
03:29We are.
03:30Guys, we're still trying to win these games.
03:33Right.
03:33I just think the organization's in a little bit of a tough spot where there's certain,
03:38when you sell, you immediately, right, you call up Grant McRae and you this, that, the other.
03:44We've got to check these guys out.
03:46We've got to see what we got.
03:48And you do.
03:49You have to continue doing that.
03:51But to what end?
03:54And to what level?
03:55Like, how far do you lean into that?
03:57And I would argue that, dude, you could wait at least one more week before you really kind of white flag it in terms of personnel.
04:09And I'm sorry.
04:10There's nothing against the kid.
04:11I don't know if he's going to be a good player someday.
04:14But right now, Kiwi Tang's not a major league pitcher.
04:17He's given up more runs than innings pitched.
04:20He's not a major league pitcher right now.
04:22So, and as long as you've got a winning record and some sort of a vision and a path, I don't think you put guys out there like that yet.
04:29We're not there yet.
04:30You can pitch him next month.
04:32You have September for that.
04:33If you really want to see it, then you've got September.
04:36I'm totally with you.
04:37And I do think that Grant McRae's a little bit different.
04:39He's been up before.
04:41And I think that he's got a skill set that you can really bank on, even if you're just trying to win.
04:46He's a guy who's got speed.
04:48He's a better defensive outfielder than Ramos and Matos.
04:52And so, he does give you, I think, some value right now, even if you're still trying to compete.
04:57100%.
04:58And you traded Yaz.
04:59Like, you don't have another left-handed hitting outfielder to put out there.
05:03So, that I understand.
05:04Although, are you looking at other names in the minors and whatnot?
05:09And I know Encarnacion just got hurt.
05:11So, that's going to, McCray not going anywhere.
05:13And Matos is probably going to come back up.
05:15And, therefore, you get a platoon for those two in right field and take a look at both of them.
05:20And you get what you get.
05:21And I'm fine with that.
05:22But, Kai Wei Tang, for example, to me, feels like you could find something else to do better on Friday night.
05:30Yeah.
05:30That's my opinion.
05:31I mean, Blade Tidwell is the guy.
05:33And he won't be ready to pitch on Friday because he pitched yesterday.
05:35But he's a guy who I'd love to see at the Major League level.
05:38And the other one, which is really interesting, and you're going to roll your eyes.
05:43And you might actually throw something at me.
05:45And I'm ready to duck.
05:46Let me get something.
05:46I've got a stapler here if you want me to throw this to you so you can throw it back at me.
05:50Well, Guru already had a crumpled up piece of paper over here.
05:52I don't want to hurt you.
05:54But I've got this.
05:55I've got a crumpled up piece of paper.
05:56What do you got?
05:57Marco Luciano.
05:59Ow!
06:00That really hit me.
06:01He's got 20 home runs.
06:03He leads Sacramento.
06:04He's had a good offensive year in Sacramento.
06:07He's got 20 home runs.
06:09What else?
06:10What's the OPS?
06:1020 home runs.
06:11What's the OPS?
06:12What's the batting average?
06:14Well, I mean, batting average is such an old man stat.
06:17And by the way, has he shown the ability that when a ball comes at him in the outfield that he opens his glove?
06:23Or is he still doing that thing where he just, like, kicks the thing across the yard?
06:28Well, why does that matter?
06:29We play Elliott Ramos and left, and he's atrocious.
06:33Or as Lowe Neal would say, he's herocious.
06:35But he's allowed to play left field night in and night out.
06:41And you asked about batting average.
06:42I mean, I'd rather not talk about it.
06:45Let's take a call.
06:47202?
06:48219.
06:49Yeah.
06:50OPS is 787.
06:51Yeah, because he hits bombs.
06:52Right.
06:53Yeah.
06:53He got 20 bombs.
06:55He's driven in 54.
06:56Look, if you need somebody.
06:57He's only struck out 125 times.
06:59I mean, like, you're putting him up at the expense of who?
07:01Like, who, you know what I mean?
07:03Instead of bringing up Matos, give Luciano a chance to be out there.
07:06Oh, that's fine.
07:07Yeah, they're both automatic outs, so whatever.
07:09I mean, he's got at least more thump than Matos.
07:12And Matos has had a chance to come up to the big club, and he's done next to nothing.
07:16So, I don't know.
07:17As we're looking at having a look at guys in that spot.
07:21Sure.
07:21Bring up Luciano and let him have another go.
07:24Stick him in right field.
07:25What could go wrong?
07:26A lot.
07:27San Francisco's a super easy right field to play.
07:30You know what I mean?
07:30Well, it's an easy left field to play, but the left fielder can't play it.
07:33Yeah, but, I mean, Rommel's not going anywhere.
07:35Rommel's going to be their left fielder.
07:37Jung-Huli's going to be their center fielder.
07:38That's great.
07:39And I'm all about that.
07:40But let's not pretend that we have this elite defense in this one spot.
07:44No, no, no.
07:45If you want to pull up Luciano instead of Matos, I'm not going to.
07:48You can throw the thing back at me.
07:50I won't throw that at you.
07:51No, it's over there on the ground.
07:52I can't get there.
07:52I'd rather throw a stapler at you.
07:54If that's what you want to do, that's what you want to do.
07:56Ouch.
07:57Dude, you're reminding me of, man, gosh, life was different back then.
08:02I don't know why this just flashed into my head when you threatened to throw a stapler at me.
08:07What do you think I'm about to say?
08:08When that overseas reporter threw a shoe at George Bush.
08:12No, no, that's not what I was going to say.
08:13Okay.
08:14You remember that, though?
08:15And he totally dodged it?
08:17I do.
08:18I do.
08:18And I also, I remember the look on George's face when that happened is one of the funniest things.
08:26Like, I wasn't a real big George W guy.
08:28Fine.
08:29But that moment, I was like, yeah, W.
08:32Like, he ducked it, and then he just smirked at him.
08:35Because he was kind of goofy a little bit.
08:37Yeah, yeah.
08:37He just smirked at him, which was like, what the hell's going on over here?
08:41You tried to hit me with a shoe, and I dodged it.
08:43Now what?
08:44You throw a sock at me?
08:46What's next?
08:47That might have been the beginning of like, oh, the presidency is different now.
08:51And boy, have we leaned into that.
08:52Yeah.
08:53But anyway.
08:53You were going to say.
08:54I was going to remember back when I was a kid, and we went to Shoreline Amphitheater to
09:00see, dude, was it called, and it was sponsored, I think, by KMEL.
09:05Summer Jam.
09:06Summer Jam.
09:07Summer Jam.
09:08I went every year.
09:09Dude.
09:09And Too Short is on stage, and I'm sitting up there on the lawn at Shoreline.
09:14Yeah.
09:14And the dude's next to me, because people, you know, they just get nuts at a concert.
09:20I don't know why.
09:21It's kind of like.
09:22Well, it's an inebriation sensation is what it is.
09:25Or more.
09:26Right?
09:26You got the.
09:27Cha-ching!
09:27You got alcohol.
09:29You got the opposite sex.
09:30You've got drugs.
09:32You've got just, right?
09:34My parents aren't here.
09:35Some dude pulls out a bag.
09:38And not the kind of bag you think I'm about to say.
09:41He pulls out a bag and reaches in.
09:42Okay?
09:44Want to know what he pulls out?
09:46Skateboard wheels.
09:49Skateboard wheels.
09:50Man.
09:51And just starts throwing them down toward the seats at Shoreline.
09:57And I'm immediately thinking to myself, dog.
10:01Like, what are the chances that somebody gets very hurt?
10:05Like, killed.
10:07Skateboard wheels.
10:09And I mean, we're launching these things 50 yards in the air.
10:12Down to the seats area of Shoreline Amphitheater.
10:16And, like, I don't know of anything specific that happened because of that.
10:21But I do know that stuff started getting thrown at such a level at the concert that Too Short hadn't.
10:26He stopped the show.
10:27And he had to scold everybody.
10:29Right.
10:29Yeah, which I'm like, yeah.
10:31Scold some people.
10:31Scold away.
10:32Yeah, this is bad.
10:33But anyway, when you threatened to throw a stapler at me, that visual just popped into my head of the dude next to me throwing skateboard wheels.
10:40And that was many years ago.
10:42So whoever you were, if you're listening to 95.7, the game right now, shame on you.
10:46Right.
10:46Well, and also shame on you, WNBA fan, who brings objects to games and decides that these personal objects are worthy of being thrown onto the floor.
11:00And it's brutal.
11:01And I'm known to be graphic, but I won't get any more graphic than that because everybody knows, I think.
11:06Yeah, and it's like, what are we doing, sports fans, right?
11:10Yep.
11:11Yep.
11:11Anyway.
11:12So anyway, quick aside is over.
11:16Sure.
11:16You know, back to Wiggins.
11:17Hey, Giants, just try to win until we're really, really, really done.
11:23Try to win.
11:25And don't tell us you are if you're starting Kai Wei Tang on Friday night.
11:31And I'm sorry that sounds so damn harsh to Kai Wei Tang, who only has 14 big league innings under his belt.
11:39But it's been a gas can situation every time he's come to the mound.
11:44So the only thing I can tell you right now, if you're in search of, well, what do we got with this guy?
11:51Here's my answer right now.
11:53Nothing.
11:54At the moment, nothing.
11:56Maybe it will come later, but it's not here yet, so don't do that right now.
12:02You have an off day tomorrow, and you have every right to change your starter on Friday night to Carson Wisenhut.
12:11And that is what I would do if I were the Giants.
12:15Yeah.
12:15I mean, let's see him again.
12:16He pitched great last time out.
12:18So let's go ahead and bring him back.
