Transcript
00:00Today, the police would have carried out a successful and precision rescue of the kidnapped victim, Mr. Daniel Kowal, in the building located in the background at around 11 a.m. this morning.
00:12It's a feeling of absolute relief, one that only victims of such ordeals and their families can truly describe. But no doubt, it was felt across the country on Sunday morning.
00:25Police Commissioner Alistair Guevara says kidnapped Cal pilot Daniel Kowal had no physical injuries, but was immediately taken for medical evaluation after being rescued from a house on Third Street, Maraval.
00:40Unfortunately, one of his hostage takers slash guards would have engaged my officers this morning. And in an exchange of fire, he was wounded and taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
00:54A manhunt is underway for two other suspects, while the police commissioner says three are in custody.
01:02TV6 News understands between the hours of 11 p.m. on Saturday and 3.30 a.m. Sunday, a 50-year-old Malik man and a 24-year-old man from Maraval were stopped along the Queen's Park savannah near Napa after using KWAL's bank card to withdraw money in Port of Spain.
01:21Both suspects were in a white Toyota Acqua. They were arrested and taken to separate police stations for questioning.
01:29I hope that this would serve as a warning to other persons who wish to engage in that sort of illegality. The time has come to change. The tide is now. Please turn away from crime and look towards profitable, legal means of making a living. This end is not for you.
01:51Kewal, who lives Valsane, went missing on Wednesday and a ransom demand made to relatives on Friday. The commissioner declined to say whether a ransom was paid, citing the sensitivity of the investigation.
02:05However, he urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any information that could help locate the remaining suspects.
02:14He credited the coordinated efforts of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Inter-Agency Task Force, Special Intelligence Unit, Port of Spain Task Force, Western Division Task Force and the Air Support Unit for the success of the rescue.
02:29Thank you. Cindy Raghubatika Singh, TV6 News.
