00:00Misbehaviour in public office is the charge laid against a serving police officer arrested in connection with missing drugs from the Barataria Police Station.
00:11According to a statement from the TTPS on Saturday, the officer, with around five years' service and attached to the Barataria Police Station, was arrested, formally charged and is expected to appear before the court on Monday, October 6.
00:26The TTPS says the investigation was initiated after a discrepancy was discovered in narcotics exhibits lodged at the Barataria Police Station, following a successful anti-narcotics operation conducted in the McCoyer industrial area in early September.
00:44The original seizure resulted in the arrest of three people and the recovery of 89 packets of suspected cannabis, worth over $1 million.
00:53When inconsistencies in the exhibit count weren't covered, Police Commissioner Alistair Guevara ordered a full investigation.
01:01The Professional Standards Bureau conducted a detailed review, leading to the identification of a suspect and confirmation of a deliberate attempt to tamper with evidence.
01:12Commissioner Guevara says, quote,
01:14The Commissioner reiterated that this incident is a stark reminder,
01:44that the badge is not a shield for dishonour, but rather it is a symbol of trust, earned daily through service and sacrifice.
01:53And to those who believe they can exploit their position for personal gain, he says,
01:58let this serve as notice that we are watching, we are acting, and we are not afraid to clean our own house.
