00:00I think normally when you have a brand new roster to present,
00:04these two guys get together this week for a reason.
00:08It's like, all right, roster is set.
00:09We're going to start counting down and getting ready for a game next week.
00:12I don't know.
00:13Sometimes it's a little bit of a celebration vibe where it's like,
00:17these are our guys, and congrats to our guys,
00:19and boy, we're excited to go win.
00:21And I mean, the group, rightfully so, came out hot with like,
00:27pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, six, seven in a row,
00:30Jawan Jennings' questions because it was time.
00:32It was time to press a little bit on like, guys, what's going on?
00:37And I mean, to John's best efforts,
00:39he'd like this to still sound like an injury and a holdout.
00:43He didn't run from the holdout thing, but he said, no, no, no, still hurt also.
00:48But it felt flimsy.
00:52It felt flimsy.
00:53And, you know, I just don't buy that if the new money was there,
00:58that Jawan wouldn't be at practice today.
01:00And so it sounded uncomfortable.
01:01Well, and the flimsy part, too, is the news that broke during the morning roast
01:05where Marquez Valdez-Scantling was claimed and signed,
01:09and he's brought in, and immediately he's like, yeah, Russell Gage, he's here.
01:14And the follow-up was, practice squad?
01:16No.
01:17He's on the 53.
01:18He's on the 53.
01:19In other words, he's a receiver, and Marquez Valdez-Scantling,
01:23who is coming in, and if you claim somebody like that,
01:26and I don't even know if he was on waivers,
01:27if he was just a guy who was a street-free agent based on his time served,
01:32he probably wasn't a waiver claim.
01:34But, yeah, he's going to be on the 53, too.
01:36So, yeah, Jawan, Caff, Cash, whatever it is,
01:40we just got two more receivers who were in the building and ready to go.
01:43So, yeah, go ahead and do what you need to do, Jawan.
01:46If a lot of you just joined us, let's get you updated
01:49so you can hear what it sounded like.
01:51Here's John Lynch updating the Jawan Jennings situation.
01:55So, Jawan's still working through his calf issue, making progress.
02:00We're kind of like everyone else, hopeful but not sure, you know, on week one,
02:04and we'll proceed as such.
02:07And so we're working to get the best mix out there.
02:11We added a piece today, and, you know, in MVS, Marquez Valdez-Scanling,
02:17and thrilled to have him part of it, and, you know, we move forward.
02:21Okay.
02:21So, Jawan, that was attempt one.
02:24It's like, yep, the calf, we're working.
02:27Yeah.
02:27So everybody's working.
02:29So we're trying to get the calf.
02:30Okay.
02:31So someone says, boy, this calf, whoo, boy, this is a tough one, isn't it, guys?
02:39Do you guys need to maybe do another MRI or something to check out what's going on?
02:44You don't image a guy like daily, you know.
02:47So that's something that happened a little bit ago, and, you know,
02:51if it doesn't get better soon, I'm sure we'll be doing more of that.
02:55Is it worse than you originally had thought it was going to be?
02:57Yeah, but I also, calves can take a long time.
03:00That's one thing with that injury.
03:02Played with guys who, they can take a while.
03:05Yeah, good job, JLC.
03:06Hey, is this maybe worse MVS, JLC?
03:10We should just start doing this with everybody.
03:13Is this maybe a little worse than you thought it was?
03:16Well, you know.
03:17Calfs can be tricky.
03:19I didn't really think anything about it to begin with.
03:21Yeah, and you don't image a guy every day.
03:23No, not every day.
03:24I mean, he hasn't practiced since the end of July, so I don't know.
03:27Well, it's been a month, so maybe you want to image him again?
03:29I don't know.
03:30Here's another good effort at it, and the media comes at,
03:33all right, John, let's pretend for a minute that at some point he is healthy.
03:40Calf, great.
03:43Then does he play?
03:44Well, there's a lot that goes into that, Eric.
03:46You know, ideally, everybody has a training camp.
03:48Everyone's out there.
03:49You know, that's a perfect world.
03:51But, you know, he's been putting in work to the side,
03:55and we'll have to make that judgment when the time comes.
03:58You know, the other thing is both things can be true.
04:00You know, he wants a new contract, and he's got our calf.
04:02So I think people want to assume one or the other.
04:05Both things can be true.
04:06So the first insinuation.
04:07Yeah, shout out Ralph Barbieri.
04:08Rest in peace.
04:09What's up, Ralph?
04:10Yeah, rest in peace.
04:11Two things can be equally true.
04:12They can be, but not necessarily in this case.
04:15My read, I don't know Juwan's body, don't want to say something about someone that I don't know,
04:22but I'm just reading the room.
04:24I'm listening to what I'm listening to in the tone.
04:27And so John first starts to basically say, if he is healthy, well then, now we've got to rely on the ramp up.
04:34I don't know if he's going to be ready for a game.
04:37But then voluntarily goes, by the way, I do want to go ahead and admit to you that, yes,
04:44this is also about his contract.
04:47So two things can be equally true.
04:49Oh, oh, you don't say, John.
04:52Okay, says the media.
04:55Has he requested a trade?
04:57You know, a while ago he did.
04:59But that was a long time ago, and we've moved on from that.
05:03That was during camp, or was it before?
05:05I'm not getting into when it was, but it was a while ago.
05:08Yeah.
05:09I'm not getting into when it was.
05:11Right.
05:11And that was Tim Kawakami with the follow-up.
05:13When?
05:14When, John?
05:15I'm not getting into it.
05:16At some point.
05:16And then he went on to say, we're not doing that, which I don't want to jump to all your
05:21sound that you have.
05:22No, we've got one more.
05:24Fire it.
05:25Hey, John, what did you say about it?
05:27A trade request?
05:29No, he asked for it, and we've moved on.
05:31We're not doing that, so we're moving forward.
05:34Yeah, we're not doing that.
05:36So we're moving forward.
05:37And that to me was, I mean, one of the biggest takeaways where, you know, trades are happening
05:42now, and trades can happen now where cut down day is gone, and you do have teams that
05:47are like, oh boy, we could use a receiver, but we're not doing that now.
05:51So that tells me that they've had the conversation, they shopped him, Jawan and his agent, Drew
05:58Rosenhaus, they poked around, and the Niners didn't get back anything they thought was worthwhile,
06:02so you're not doing that.
06:04So now, you get to this spot where there's a game in 11 days now?
06:10Good Lord, is that what it is?
06:1111 days, yeah.
06:13Sunday, right?
06:14A week from Sunday.
06:15And so, all right, Jawan, either you come play football, and if your calf is really that
06:20bad, let's see it, and maybe we will do more imaging.
06:23Or, if you don't, we got MVS, we got Gage, we got Pearsall, we got Skymore.
06:29Or, we'd rather have you, but if you don't want to play on the deal that we've already
06:33offered you and given you, then what are we even doing here?
06:36You know what we have on the 49ers?
06:38We have Ricky Pearsall, and then we have the entire 11th round of fantasy drafts from
06:44two years ago.
06:45That's who the 49ers have.
06:47I thought you were going to say, like, the Kansas City Chiefs alumni team.
06:50No, it's a little bit.
06:51Skymore and MVS.
06:52And MVS, yes, although these guys are all alumni of a number of places.
06:57And Demarcus Robinson.
06:58And Demarcus Robinson, right, although not available week one.
07:01Like, week one could be Ricky Pearsall, and two years ago, the 11th round.
07:06Skymore was the second-round rookie, and people were like, ooh, he's got Patrick Mahomes
07:10throwing to him.
07:11I got a sneaky pick.
07:13I'm going to go with Skymore.
07:15And Russell Gage was WR3 in Atlanta.
07:18Like, you know.
07:18Like, about three years ago?
07:19Yeah, they hucked that thing around there a little bit.
07:21You know, like, I don't know if Matt Ryan was still there or whatever, but, like, Julio
07:25Jones, hey, don't forget about Russell Gage late in the year.
07:28A little late-round flyer.
07:30Marquez Valdez-Scampley.
07:31Ooh, he's a deep threat in Green Bay.
07:34And then he went to Kansas City.
07:35Good quarterbacks.
07:36I like those guys.
07:38That's who the Niners have now.
07:39And it might only be week one.
07:42It could be week two.
07:44But what would you do now if you're Juwan?
07:48You know, the only question that didn't get asked, and I understand why it didn't get
07:53asked, because I don't know that you would have gotten a great answer out of it, but you
07:57might have tried, because they really did try to hit a bunch of angles.
08:00Hey, is this the calf?
08:02Well, yeah, you know, working through it.
08:03Isn't it something that, well, that could be true also.
08:06And, well, is he going to play next week?
08:08Well, I don't know.
08:09We're working through it.
08:10This is four days after Kyle Shanahan's like, yep, he'll be ready for week one.
08:14So, it's very clear what's going on.
08:17At no point, because he says, we're not doing that.
08:20We're not trading him.
08:21Yep.
08:21But, okay, Niners, are you still in the process of talking to him about a contract?
08:31Are you potentially willing to change your current stance, his current deal, prior to
08:39the season starting?
08:40Now, very possibly, John Lynch says, we're not talking about that publicly.
08:45But, it might have been nice to hear someone try, because they drew a line in the stand,
08:50we're not trading him.
08:52I wonder if they would have also drawn a line in the sand, no, we're not, the season's here,
08:58and we're not discussing contracts for anybody.
09:02I wonder if they would have done that.
09:03I wonder if that's where they are.
09:05I'd probably think that that is where they are, because here we are, as I mentioned, 11
09:09days away, and, you know, you've got practice here coming up in about 15 minutes, and that's
09:14practice, and you're no longer in camp mode.
09:17Now you've got your 53, and I know it's fluid, and it's not your final 53.
09:20And when you get to game day, I think you get 45 or 46 up on actual game day.
09:25So, between now and then, your roster will be a little bit different come game day.
09:30But now you're getting into, like, week one mode.
09:33So, you're no longer worrying about the off-season.
09:36You are now in the season.
09:39The cut-down day is done.
09:41The press conference is done.
09:42Tomorrow, Robert Sala will talk after practice.
09:45And then, guess what?
09:46You're starting to ramp up for week one.
09:48So, all of the contract stuff, if you are, like, really close to, you know, Jawan wants
09:54this, and you're close to giving him that, I do think the tone today would have been different.
09:58The tone I got from John Lynch was, we're not trading him.
10:02He wanted that.
10:03We're not trading him.
10:04And, you know, geez, the calf.
10:06We haven't imaged it.
10:07And, honestly, we don't really know.
10:09But, they do know, I think they're in a spot where it is, I think that they've reached
10:14the point where it's, all right, Jawan, you either show up or you don't.
10:19And, you and I are both parents, and you get to that point with your kid, and it's like,
10:22okay, either you do what I've asked you 14 times, or you don't.
10:28And, if you don't, well, I've already told you that A, B, C, and D is going to happen.
10:33So, it's up to you.
10:34Right.
10:34You're prepared for this action or that action.
10:37Correct.
10:38And, they're now prepared, right?
10:39So, what would you do?
10:40What would you do if you were Jawan?
10:42Because the ball's in his court.
10:43Right.
10:44The 49ers don't need to do a damn thing.
10:47The bottom line is, this is a really good player who we love, but the Niners approached
10:52this season in a way that I haven't seen them do it before, which was much more on a spreadsheet.
10:58They are approaching things much more than they have in the past in a financial way.
11:04And, I get it, because they had to pay a quarterback.
11:05And, they are trying to hold cap space for the future.
11:09And, this is why I think that we have arrived at, this doesn't fit anymore, Bill.
11:15Here's why.
11:16I want you to imagine this now.
11:18The 49ers are not just looking at Jawan Jennings like we do as fans.
11:23We as fans are freaking out.
11:25We want to beat the Seahawks.
11:27That's what we want.
11:2949ers are running a long-term business.
11:31I think that Jawan Jennings, the more that I hear, the more that I listen, the more that
11:36I try to gather information, I don't think Jawan Jennings is asking for a couple more million
11:42dollars this year.
11:43I think Jawan Jennings is trying to strike while his iron is hot and get a new long-term extension.
11:48I think, I mean, Matt Barrow said it to us the other day.
11:51He wants a long-term extension.
11:53The problem for him is, the 49ers have zero motivation to do that whatsoever.
12:00I think they love him for this year.
12:03That's what his contract goes through.
12:05Now, after this year, if you're the 49ers right now, are you looking to give a lot of
12:11money, or even mid-level money, to Jawan Jennings when this is what you at least would project?
12:19You never know, because people can get hurt and everything.
12:21But in this moment, here's what you would project.
12:24You're projecting that in 2026, we've got Ricky Pearsall going into year three.
12:30You've got Brandon Iyuk at full health and highly paid at $30 million a year.
12:38You also have Jordan Watkins, a rookie this year, who you are very excited about.
12:44You will hopefully have a healthy Jacob Cowen going into year three.
12:48They like him, too.
12:50And you will still have Demarcus Robinson on the second year of his two-year deal.
12:54That's five already right there.
12:57And you can have a whole offseason to pick and choose and find other ways to bolster that
13:03room in the offseason.
13:04Why on earth would you pay Jawan now and guarantee him mid-level or large money going forward as
13:14he approaches 30, when that's what your room looks like after this year?
13:19So they love him.
13:21He wants to stay.
13:23Not a good fit.
13:25No.
13:25It's just not a good fit after this year.
13:27And especially if he's asking for, I don't know what he's asking for, but there's a point
13:32where if you're the Niners, you're like, no, we're not doing multiple years.
13:36We're not doing 15 to 17 million average annual with a guarantee that is going to boost it up.
13:42And I thought it was interesting what John Lynch said about what was reported.
13:46And I've been saying it about his contract and all these incentives.
13:49And if those incentives actually aren't in place, well, then his contract is just what
13:55it is this year.
13:56And if you're Jawan and you want more than just the, I don't know, five or seven million
14:01that he's going to make this year.
14:03A lot of it's already been paid, though.
14:04About half of it is.
14:05That's what I was saying before.
14:06And that's where, you know, you signed it last year and you got a signing bonus that
14:09was about eight million.
14:11You got your guaranteed money up front and now you have a great year and now you want more
14:15because what you're earning is not going to be guaranteed.
14:18And the Niners are thinking, well, we already paid you a lot, guaranteed.
14:22And yeah, you balled out.
14:24But your point is, I think, spot on about the future where you've got cowing year two,
14:30pierce all year two.
14:31You've got all these young receivers that if they pop, you're going to want them on the
14:36cheap before you have to make those decisions.
14:39And the rat on the table brought to you by IU pest control.
14:43Nice.
14:43It's at co, but you get the bit.
14:45I got it.
14:45The rat is he's making 30 million.
14:47Listen, so he's soaking up all of the money in the room and he can't even play.
14:53So you may have a decision to make on him.
14:55So if you're paying him 30 and Juwan 15, I mean, what are we doing with the room?
15:00And what are you doing with pierce all in two years when if he plays the way they clearly
15:04think he's going to play?
15:05Now you have a first round receiver who might put up numbers and he's going to command a
15:10lot of money in a couple of years.
15:11So it just, it just doesn't fit.
15:14And here's, here's what Juwan and the Niners both know to probably be true.
15:22Juwan, you ain't putting those numbers up again.
15:24That's what I was saying.
15:25Yeah.
15:25That's not going to happen.
15:27I mean, yes, it could twist that way.
15:29Brandon will come back and not look like himself.
15:32And Ricky could have something go wrong with his season.
15:34And all of a sudden you're leaning on Juwan again.
15:37And he goes for 900 to 1100 yards.
15:40Sure.
15:40It could happen, but that's not the plan.
15:42That's not likely.
15:43So Juwan knows that.
15:45That's why he's freaking out.
15:46That's why Drew Rosenhouse is like, dude, we got to act right now.
15:49And the Niners have a, they've got a, an injured receiver room.
15:53What perfect timing.
15:55My man, Juwan, they need you.
15:58And you're coming off a big year.
16:00Now is our chance to pounce.
16:03And he went, yeah, yeah, Drew, you're right.
16:06You're right.
16:06Let's do this.
16:07And they came to the Niners early in the off season.
16:10And the Niners said, no, we're not doing that.
16:12And then Juwan said, then I want to trade.
16:14And the Niners no doubt went, all right, we'll call around the league
16:17and see what someone wants to offer.
16:19Oh, not much.
16:20Yep.
16:21So actually, no, we're not doing that either.
16:23He says, then we're not showing up.
16:25And the Niners go, then we'll sign a bunch of people sitting on the street
16:30and we'll play a game or two until our other guys come back.
16:34And we believe in our system and we believe that we're going to be fine.
16:38Love to have you out there.
16:40But if that's the way you want to play it,
16:43that's the way you want to play it.
16:44Juwan is out of chips at the blackjack table.
16:50So either go to the ATM or go to your room.
16:56Ask what you got.
16:57I hate to say it.
16:58I love the guy.
16:59Yeah.
16:59I am such a big fan of his.
17:01And they are too.
17:03To a point.
17:04My man's out of chips.
17:05Right.
17:05And, I mean, the only chip he has left is to show up and ball out and make it so that
17:11in three weeks he's so good that Russell Gage gets back on the practice squad
17:17and MVS becomes a, you know, an afterthought, a deep threat only.
17:22And then Jordan Watkins, you can't take my job.
17:24And I uke in week seven.
17:25Fine.
17:26You're back.
17:27You're healthy.
17:27Week eight.
17:28Whatever.
17:28But I'm back, and I'm balling, and I'm Juwan, and then you get to the offseason,
17:32and then you maybe get a free agent deal.
17:35But I think that the market right now for Juwan Jennings as a free agent or as a trade
17:40piece, he's not seen as that dude.
17:43And so, you know, even if Drew Rosenhaus wants to shop him in the offseason, the best way
17:49to do it is for him to have another year this year like he did last year.
17:52Right.
17:52But again, they know that that's not likely.
17:55Numbers-wise, that is not likely.
17:58Let's go to Barry and Burlingame here on Willard and Dibs.
18:01Greg Cosell is coming up in 25 minutes.
18:03Hey, Barry, what's cooking?
18:06Hey, guys.
18:08Two things about Jennings that the last couple of days I have not heard either of you talk
18:14about.
18:15Maybe you have, but I missed it.
18:17And I just don't see it as being included in the narrative.
18:20And it's this.
18:21When the 49ers were humming in 21, 22, and 23, Jennings' value was as much his tenacious
18:33run blocking, his aggression.
18:36I mean, we're all forgetting how much value he brought to them.
18:43And yes, he was the third wide receiver, but he didn't catch a whole lot of balls, but they
18:48had guys ahead of him who were doing that.
18:50But how many times did Shanahan praise what he brought to the core essence of their offense, which
19:02is the running game?
19:04So my question to you guys is, who do they have that's going to step in and deliver that?
19:12I get that there's other people who can come in and catch passes, you know, in a few weeks
19:18anyway, but who is going to give them that extra juice when they need to run the ball in
19:28the fourth quarter of a close game, who's going to do it with the same nastiness and aggression
19:34that he brought?
19:36Barry, thank you very much for the call.
19:40You're going to get a lot of agreement here.
19:41We have talked about it.
19:42Oh, yeah.
19:43He is a phenomenal blocker.
19:45And the answer to your question is, there's probably going to be a downgrade.
19:48There's probably going to be a downgrade as far as that is concerned.
19:52But I guess what I would sort of respond to you and say is, even if you're right, Jawan
19:58is a phenomenal blocker as a wide receiver, and there will probably be a downgrade with
20:03whoever fills in for him.
20:04But does that mean that you would advocate the 49ers signing him to a long-term, lucrative,
20:11extension that goes multiple three, four years from now, knowing what you have or what you
20:18think you have in Pearsall, Iuke, Robinson, Watkins, Cowing, like those are the guys they're
20:25building the wide receiver room around going forward.
20:28So, like noted, yeah, he's a great blocker.
20:32But I don't know if that pushes the ball across the goal line as far as the conversation that
20:38the two sides are having right now.
20:39No, and looking at the PFF numbers, Jawan Jennings last year, as I've mentioned, number
20:45one in run blocking among wide receivers.
20:48You know who's number 13 on the list?
20:51Marquez Valdez-Scantling.
20:53There you go.
20:53That's why they wanted him.
20:54Yeah, he's number 13, which he's not, you know, top three or four.
20:58You've got Puka.
20:59You've got Dontavian Wicks of Green Bay.
21:01Nico Collins actually is a top six run blocker according to this.
21:05Great player.
21:05Mike Evans, Jalen Waddell.
21:07You get down, and it's Marquez Valdez-Scantling.
21:10He's right there.
21:11And Ricky Pearsall and Brandon Iuke are not far behind him.
21:15So I do think that MVS, as we will call him going forward, can be a facsimile of what
21:22Jawan Jennings brings.
21:23And as you've mentioned, it's a short-term deal for Marquez Valdez-Scantling.
21:28It's one year.
21:29It might not even be one year.
21:30It might be four weeks or six weeks, right?
21:33Come in, and let's see what you have.
21:35And if he contributes, then you stay.
21:36And if not, wide receiver survivor, you move on.
21:39Yeah, like Barry, I think the Niners agree with you.
21:42The Niners would like Jawan Jennings to come play.
21:44But Jawan does not want to play for the $3 million remaining on his deal.
21:49I get that.
21:50I support it.
21:52Strike while the iron's hot.
21:53All of those things.
21:55But what would you have him do now?
21:57The Niners have looked at him and said, you're bluffing.
22:01You're bluffing.
22:03So should Jawan start missing checks?
22:05What does that do to his numbers?
22:07What does that do to his free agency next year?
22:10Jawan has arrived in a very, very tough spot.
22:13He's in a box.
22:15Completely.
22:16What's in the box?
22:17Jawan Jennings.
22:18And ego often keeps people inside the box.
22:22That's what I wonder.
22:24Like, are you willing to just go tail between legs now and come to practice?
22:29Probably not.
22:29Well, what's the alternative?
22:31You sit out the year, and then who are you in the offseason?
22:34Not good.
22:34Yeah.
22:35And in fact, if you sit out the whole year,
22:37I don't even think that one year comes off of his deal.
22:39Like, you don't get a service time accrued.
22:41Right.
