00:00Troy, Santa Cruz Mountains, thank you for your patience.
00:02Troy, what's up?
00:05No, I appreciate that, Mark Dibbs.
00:08And let me just preface what I'm about to say.
00:11Born in 79, so I'm of the same milk as you gentlemen.
00:16My old man took my first game at the stick in 83,
00:19and I watched Tom Landry and the Dallas Cowboys beat the 49ers.
00:24And also, Dan, really a pleasure to be on with you
00:28because I've been listening to you since you were on a different frequency
00:32with the great Gary Radnich and one peak on.
00:37So, first of all, let me just put that out there.
00:41Thank you. Appreciate it.
00:43Yeah.
00:44Secondarily, you know, again, season ticket holder Levi
00:48was at the Lions game last year.
00:52Was at the Bears game watching, you know.
00:56Yeah, thank you, Lucas and Grandy, for the drop.
00:59I was going to ask for that prior.
01:03I've seen a lot of good 49er games and, you know,
01:08grew up with Joe and Steve and the rest of it, right?
01:11And I'm just telling you, yesterday's game was the most impressive 49ers football game
01:21on the road, in the playoffs, that I've ever seen since 83, right?
01:27Because, again, everything you guys are talking about,
01:30everything that Mark's talking about, you know, we're depleted.
01:34We've got, you know, guys coming off the practice squad, everything else.
01:40We have to get to a point where we start to put Kyle Shanahan
01:44up in the Bill Walsh conversation, right?
01:49We have to start to get to a point where we go,
01:52that was the most impressive win, and this season is the most impressive season
01:59that we've ever seen from 49ers.
02:03Because we don't have Joe Montana, Ronnie Lott, Jerry Reich,
02:08and Charles Haley anymore, right?
02:10We have these guys, and we go on the road in Philly and beat them.
02:18The champs.
02:19The reigning Super Bowl champion.
02:20Yep.
02:21So, that's pretty good, dude.
02:25That's pretty good.
02:26It's beyond pretty good.
02:27Troy, thank you so much for your comments, man.
02:29Really, really, really nice.
02:30Thanks, Troy.
02:30I don't think we need to bring up the name Bill Walsh yet
02:35when we're talking about Kyle Shanahan.
02:37There's obvious things there, first of all,
02:38because that's like, not just Kyle's never won a Super Bowl,
02:42Bill won a bunch.
02:43And there's also kind of a majesty around it.
02:46Like, whoever the Warriors' next great player is in the next 30 years,
02:51you're not going to compare him to Steph Curry.
02:53Like, nothing's ever going to capture that majesty,
02:55and I feel the same way about Bill Walsh.
02:57Like, he was the first, he was the best, Bill Walsh is Bill Walsh.
03:02So, to put Kyle on that plane, I wouldn't do that.
03:06And I don't think we can look at it in sort of that view from 10,000 feet yet,
03:12because A, it's not over, and B, he hasn't won a ring yet.
03:16But I think there's a way to say that to capture what Troy is talking about.
03:21He's a freaking elite coach.
03:24Yeah.
03:24He is an elite coach.
03:26And I hope that 49er fans appreciate the hell out of what they got.
03:30But he is a phenomenal coach.
03:32You look at the way John Harbaugh gets fired,
03:34and there's a line, like, seven teams are like, let's interview Harbaugh.
03:37If you got rid of Kyle Shanahan, I'm telling you, man,
03:41I think there's 10 teams that would consider firing their guy that they were going to keep
03:46if Kyle were available.
03:48And it's not only because of the offensive coordinator job that he does,
03:52which is elite, and what he's been able to do with this offense,
03:54but it's also what you've been talking about,
03:56which is the whole package of the locker room, the culture,
04:00and just what he's meant for the organization.
04:03And think about just the Jed York piece of this,
04:05where Jed York, kind-hearted, I'm sure, would have gone down,
04:09even if Shanahan wasn't the coach,
04:11he still would have gone down and embraced his fallen star.
04:15But since he hired Lynch and Shanahan,
04:18Jed York has taken giant steps back away from being a part of the proceedings.
04:22And I think part of that is because you put Shanahan and Lynch in charge,
04:27and they're running it the way any owner would dream about having a run.
04:31Well, and I think, sort of metaphorically,
04:34like those giant steps back for him have been giant steps forward for him.
04:38Exactly.
04:39I mean, that's why Jed York is now seen.
04:41Have you ever seen somebody say something public about Jed York,
04:45like George Kittle just did?
04:47No.
04:47Yeah, he just was like, because Jed York is the way he is,
04:53that makes this a special place.
04:56That's a first.
04:57Right.
04:57That's a first.
04:58Well, and think about other owners, like the Giants' current owners,
05:01they were not really the principal owners when they won the three World Series,
05:05but those owners are forever revered, and Larry Bear as well.
05:10And I think about Joe Lacob, where if they hadn't won any titles,
05:14I think fans would be kind of worn out with his, I don't want to say his act,
05:18because it's who he is, and he's passionate about doing it Joe's way.
05:22And they've been to seven finals and won four titles.
05:25So go crazy, Lacob, you know.
05:27Be as involved as you need to be,
05:29because you came in and said you were going to hang banners.
05:32We all laughed.
05:33We booed.
05:34We jeered.
05:35And then you went out and did it.
05:36Well, I think what you're bringing up, it's amazing what we'll put up with if you win.
05:41Yep.
05:41And it's amazing what we will overlook if you don't.
05:46And that's where I think Kyle Shanahan comes in.
05:49You look around the league, and, like,
05:52if you can't tell that Kyle Shanahan is absolutely, unequivocally one of the best coaches in the NFL,
05:57it's because you're getting shaded and frustrated by the fact that he hasn't won a ring yet.
06:04And that's fine.
06:05If that's the way you want to look at it, that's fair.
06:08But I'll stand by what I just said.
06:10I literally think if the Niners decided to move on from Kyle,
06:13you'd get damn near half the league to make a phone call immediately and be like,
06:18should we fire the guy we got to go get Kyle?
06:20Like, probably.
06:22Yeah.
06:22If we can, yes.
06:23All these vacancies that already exist.
06:25I mean, he would have his pick of the available jobs.
06:28And, you know, to put him in the Walsh category, I don't know if that will ever happen.
06:34But I do know this.
06:35The 49ers, as a franchise in history, have eight road playoff wins.
06:41And he now has authored three of them.
06:43Three of them.
06:43In just his, what, fifth trip to the postseason now?
06:48This is our fourth, right?
06:51Yeah.
06:5119, 21, 22, 23, and 25.
06:53So, fifth.
06:54Okay, fifth.
06:55But he's got three road wins.
06:57The franchise in its history has eight.
07:00And he's got three of them.
07:02So, I mean, not that you, we want to go through and rank the road playoff wins,
07:07but this one is damn near close to the top.
07:10Dude, they're super hard.
07:11They're super hard.
07:12Look at what teams had to go through to try to win on the road this weekend.
07:17Okay?
07:18Chargers, not even close.
07:19Niners pull it off.
07:21Packers build a gargantuan lead.
07:23Can't hold it.
07:25Rams build a lead.
07:27They're a ten and a half point favorite.
07:29They're going against a team with a losing record.
07:31And a minute on the clock, you're losing.
07:34Like, it is so hard.
07:36Which is why, by the way, I've seen this, and this is normal in sports.
07:40Whenever there's a big buildup and then you beat someone, people will go,
07:43ah, that team wasn't that good anyway.
07:45Don't do that.
07:46I know the Eagles have their problems.
07:48The Eagles have their problems.
07:50But at the same time, I think it's silly to diminish what just happened.
07:57And, I mean, I could even look.
07:58Like, all the problems the Eagles had this year, let's see.
08:02They still beat the Rams.
08:04They still won in Buffalo.
08:06They won in Green Bay.
08:08They beat the Lions.
08:09They won in Kansas City.
08:13They, let's see.
08:15They defeated Dallas.
08:19They won in Tampa Bay.
08:21They won at Minnesota.
08:23This is what they did just this year.
08:26So, no.
08:27The Eagles have their problems.
08:28But they don't suck.
08:30Like, they're not just some awful team that the Niners went in there and beat.
08:35How about Paul in Pleasanton?
08:37Hi, Paul.
08:37Thank you for calling.
08:40Hey, guys.
08:41I got a feeling this is our year, man.
08:43The football gods have had plenty of opportunity to, you know, kick us to the curb.
08:47I mean, heck, if the season ended like 10-7, 9-8.
08:51You know, given all the injuries, we went all like, all right, you know.
08:54So, it sucks, but that's what it is.
08:57But here we are.
08:58You know, it kind of reminds me of, I think, 2008 season when, you know, Manning, after
09:03getting, running into Brady a couple of times, finally Brady has a down year, and that's
09:07when he wins his Super Bowl here.
09:09So, really, you know, hoping that, you know, these guys keep going through it.
09:13I mean, it'll be funny if they got to run through now Seahawks and then likely Rams
09:18to come back to Levi's here.
09:20The thing I wanted to discuss with you is, should they just pay Salah to just stay here?
09:27You know, pay him like $1 less than Shanahan, call him assistant head coach, give him, you
09:32know, good input on, like, draft choices on defense.
09:37I mean, heck, you could pay like $10 million less on defense, and he could, you know, find
09:41somebody from scrap and get a championship defense on the field.
09:44Just wanted to get your thoughts on it.
09:46Thanks.
09:46Yeah, thanks, Paul.
09:47Well, my immediate reaction without knowing Robert is that it wouldn't matter, nor would
09:53it help.
09:54Should they do that?
09:55Sure, if you want.
09:56I don't know about matching Kyle's contract or whatever, but I doubt that for Robert, this
10:04comes down to money.
10:06Robert's going to want to run his own program at some point.
10:09At some point.
10:09Like everybody does.
10:10Yeah.
10:11And I don't know if he's going to get an offer this time around.
10:13He might.
10:15Yesterday didn't help if you're worried about Robert and the Niners job.
10:20You know what I mean?
10:21We're right in the middle of the hiring cycle, and he just pulled off an unbelievable feat.
10:25So, and like, you've all seen Robert talk.
10:29He's a pretty in-depth, engaging, intense dude.
10:34Plays well in a room when you interview him.
10:35No doubt.
10:36You know what I mean?
10:36Yeah, and he, you know, the first stint he got with the Jets was kind of flawed in many
10:42ways, and then you lost your quarterback after, what, seven plays?
10:45Aaron Rodgers is just gone, and so he's going to get another crack, and I was going to do
10:49a little bit of a dive on coaches who have failed in multiple places, how many of them
10:55get a third chance, and there's a short list of guys who I can remember who were a head
10:59coach, failed, got another job, failed, got a third job, failed, and that was pretty
11:04much it, but to the caller's point about the money, I'm looking online, and it looks like
11:10he makes between four and a half and six million.
11:13He's reportedly the top paid coordinator in football, so I think you're right about, it's
11:18not like, hey, here's a couple extra million.
11:20It's about wanting another chance to run your own program, but he does have the luxury now
11:25of, you know, sitting back and waiting.
11:27If this is going well, and it is, maybe you wait another cycle for a better job to open
11:32up.
11:32By the way, are there offsets coming off of that Jets job?
11:35Because the report came out right away, as soon as the Jets let him go, that they were
11:41still, you know, that contract was not up, and they were paying him almost $600,000 a
11:47month after he was fired.
11:50But that was, was that for last year?
11:52Was he under contract for this year, too?
11:54Yeah, I'm not sure, because it was a, let's see, it was a five-year contract, and did he do
11:58four years, the Jets owe him money for the remainder of the contract, reportedly around
12:03$10 million for $24 and $25.
12:06So that's, that was this year, too.
12:08Not next year.
12:09Right.
12:10I just don't know if there were offsets going on with whatever he made this year from the
12:13night.
12:13Yeah, I mean, if there were, then that just means that the Jets pay that portion of Robert
12:18Sala's salary, but either way, Bob's doing just fine financially.
12:23Yeah, yeah, he is.
