00:00I'm going to do everything I can.
00:02I'm just, I'll promise you all right now, Dibs, starting with you.
00:06I'm going to do everything in my power to not make this about the conversation that we had 48 hours ago.
00:12There'll be a victory lap.
00:13No, it's not.
00:14You ever watch the Olympics track and field events?
00:17Yeah.
00:18You grab a flag and you drape it around you, and then you do that lap.
00:23That is what a victory lap looks like.
00:26You're welcome.
00:26You're going to grab the 95-70 game banner behind you, drape it around those broad shoulders of yours, and just do a lap.
00:35That's not, I mean, maybe, but that's not where my head's at.
00:39Possibly.
00:40I don't want to also assume that everybody listening knows what we're even talking about.
00:45But two days ago, in a ho-hum press conference with that man, Kyle Shanahan, down in Santa Clara,
00:51there was next to, I don't want to say zero, but there was very little discussion about Brock Purdy,
00:58and Mac Jones' name never even came up.
01:00And I was knocked off kilter by it.
01:04And we talked about it a lot during the show.
01:07I was just like, how, how can that not be the line of questioning?
01:13And then I started getting text messages from people in the building, and Cam Inman was already booked on the show,
01:19and he came on the show, and he and I, you know, we sparred a little bit, which is totally fine.
01:27It's all good.
01:29But I just, I didn't understand why the 49er quarterback wouldn't be a bigger subject matter.
01:37And by the way, that wasn't even just about people asking questions.
01:42It's about an umbrella idea of, like, why isn't there more of a drumbeat about this whole situation?
01:51Because those people in that room are very good at their jobs,
01:55and therefore, if they feel like the fans are out there going,
01:59Purdy! Purdy!
02:02If they feel like, or at least there's some sort of angst or stress about it,
02:05then I think that they're more likely to dig a little bit.
02:09And they didn't, and some of them did not like that I was kind of pointing that out.
02:15And then from that moment forward, that's kind of been all that anybody's talking about.
02:20Time to find the flag.
02:21No, so...
02:22From that point forward...
02:23But that's all I was getting at.
02:25It was like, right?
02:27This is what we care about.
02:29My counterpoint was, today is the day,
02:32because Wednesday you still don't know.
02:34He speaks before practice.
02:36They don't know what he's going to even really do on Wednesday.
02:38Hell, we don't even know if we're going to be here on Friday.
02:40Turns out we were.
02:42Obviously, there's a risk with everything.
02:43He got some reps today with the first team.
02:46We don't know if it was a lot or not,
02:48but he didn't get enough to be the guy,
02:50and so we'll get into that on the other side.
02:51No doubt.
02:52And by the way, my counter to that is,
02:54I don't buy for one second that a football team does not know
02:57what its $53 million quarterback is doing every hour of the day.
03:00So the idea that, like, I get what you're saying.
03:03You haven't practiced yet, but they've been with him every day.
03:07He's been a limited participant for over two weeks.
03:10To me, Wednesday or not, it's worth sort of an update of, like, where are we at?
03:15But, yes, today is more important than Wednesday,
03:19because today is official designation day,
03:22and the designation did come out differently than it has over the last couple of weeks,
03:28which is why I think everybody was like,
03:31oh, time to ask more questions,
03:33and then Kyle sort of sounded like,
03:35yeah, I still don't want to answer questions.
03:37Right.
03:38That's the question.
03:39Well, the question is about Brock Purdy.
03:40I think you just answered your own question.
03:42Some of us are wondering when he's going to play.
03:43You're welcome.
03:44Thank you, Kyle.
03:46And then the underbelly to all of this,
03:50the one thing that I don't buy that's kind of being thrown around
03:55is that Kyle and the 49ers don't care what the surface is on which they play.
04:04Brock's ready.
04:05Brock's ready.
04:06Black and white.
04:07I thought he admitted today it's not black and white.
04:11Well, he didn't say that.
04:12You're inferring that from what he said.
04:14No, but okay, one sentence was he's got a chance to play,
04:18and on another sentence it was he's not fully healthy.
04:22And if we go back to previous statements,
04:24it was we don't want him to play until he's fully healthy.
04:26So if you blend all those into a blender, it's going to stall.
04:30Well, he's not fully healthy.
04:31So then he should automatically not have a chance to play.
04:34Where did he play when he came back from injury last time?
04:36When he went through practice, was that a home game?
04:40Yes, it was against Jacksonville.
04:41So he was able to play there.
04:42He went through three days of full practice.
04:45He took all the snaps as the one, and he played.
04:47That, to me, is my big takeaway today is he's not getting all the snaps as the one,
04:51so he's not going to be the one.
04:53And if he's not the one, he might be able to be the two.
04:55He's questionable.
04:57Questionable concern to be the two.
04:58That's totally fine.
04:59Which tells me that he won't be the two because if he's the two and Adrian Martinez is the three,
05:05then he's no longer going to be a 49er because he can't go to the squad and then come back.
05:10He can't go to the practice squad.
05:10So now you'll need a new three.
05:11And so what are we even doing here, honestly, if we're trying to create one problem and solve another?
05:18No, it doesn't work.
05:19But the Niners have said publicly they don't want to play Purdy again until he's 100%.
05:25And he's not 100%, but he has, quote, a chance to play.
05:30That's all I'm saying.
05:31These lead to questions.
05:33And they tried to ask them today, and Kyle does not want to really answer them.
05:37And I get why Kyle is terse and doesn't want to answer.
05:40And, you know, like one thing Cam pointed out the other day that has stuck with me.
05:45He's like, you realize, like, Jim Harbaugh, if you ask these questions of Jim Harbaugh,
05:51he would Drew Rosenhouse to you.
05:53Not Harbaugh.
05:55Anything but Harbaugh.
05:56No, yeah, Harbaugh.
05:58If you said, hey, Brock, what's going on?
06:01Next question.
06:04Next question.
06:05On to Cincinnati.
06:07I'm not talking about injuries.
06:10Yeah, but we're on to Cincinnati.
06:11So Kyle will do it.
06:12I don't know if I'll really call him all that willing or able or excited about it,
06:18but he'll do it because he's Kyle Shanahan, and that's more of his style.
06:22But I get that he's annoyed with it by now, and he's limited with what he can say.
06:25And he's, yeah, limited with what he actually knows.
06:28He knows that Brock didn't take all the first-team reps, and so he's not going to start.
06:33And he also knows that having him go out there and be the two means other things for the roster
06:39and the future of the quarterback position from a depth standpoint.
06:42And he also probably knows that if he is not totally healthy,
06:46this is not a great place to have him go out there and play.
06:49Not only the field, but they've got a really good pass rush.
06:53They're not good against the run, the New York Giants, but they are good against the pass.
06:57And, yeah, if you're going to have a quarterback get tattooed with an offensive line that hasn't been great,
07:02sorry, Mac, we're going to need you to take one more turn at being the crash test dummy.
07:07Let's take everybody through what Kyle said today and what the back and forth sounded like,
07:11and then we'll take some calls on this, okay?
07:13So here it is, Shanahan on Purdy having a chance to play.
07:17This is the first time that Brock has been questionable here and not out.
07:21What does that mean as far as possible availability for Sunday's game?
07:26That means he's got a chance to be available.
07:28Do you have a chance to start?
07:30No, Mac's going to be starting.
07:31Okay, so Kyle's been doing this a lot lately where he just repeats the question kind of back to the reporter.
07:40Like, he's questionable, so what does that mean with regard to him having a chance to play?
07:45It means he has a chance to play.
07:47Right.
07:48Last week or on Wednesday there was the question of what do you need to see at practice this week
07:54to make sure that Purdy is comfortable and confident.
07:57He goes, we need to see that he's comfortable and confident.
08:01I mean, again, like he's batting back and forth with people.
08:06He doesn't want to answer it.
08:07He kind of can't answer it to a degree, but I still think it's right to try and to try to get as much info.
08:15And his tone in and of itself, I think, is info.
08:18Right, and his tone is one of frustration and annoyance because the questions that they're asking,
08:25they have to ask him, and he knows that.
08:27And the answers that he's giving are the only answers that he can give, and the reporters know that.
08:31So it's really, it's a dance.
08:33It's like the old middle school dance where you're barely touching your partner,
08:37and you're stepping side to side in unison.
08:40Neither one of you probably wants to be there.
08:43This isn't going anywhere.
08:44You're not going to get what you really want, and you're just doing it because you're in a dance,
08:49and you're supposed to dance, and so we're doing this dance.
08:52But you can't handle prom until you've done that, would be my response.
08:56Essentially.
08:57You can't take her to a hotel in the city as an 18-year-old until you've done middle school.
09:05You've got to go through the process.
09:07Yes, and the process is, it's about as stiff and uncomfortable as a middle school dance.
09:14It's awkward and annoying.
09:15Right, because you've got to do it.
09:17You do have to do it.
09:18Well, they both have to do it.
09:20Kyle actually legitimately has to do it.
09:22It's part of his job.
09:24And the reporters, they can do it a different way.
09:26They can be more aggressive, like the really excited eighth grade boy.
09:31It's like, whoa, back up, Logan.
09:33We can just dial that back.
09:34You know, because if we're in a different market, sorry about that.
09:39No, that was great.
09:41If we're in a different market, this Q&A would go differently if we were in Philly.
09:45Yeah.
09:46Kyle, this is Big Dom, Philadelphia Inquirer.
09:49Yeah.
09:49Is he going to start?
09:50I mean, here is.
09:51Is he going to play?
09:52This is a back and forth between Kyle and Eric Branch.
09:55You've discussed it's a delicate situation with the toe.
09:59You don't want to have it aggravated again.
10:01I mean, this obviously has a chance to play.
10:03So how do you, I guess, balance that?
10:06Like, he could play and that means he could aggravate it again.
10:09I mean, is his toe fully healthy?
10:14What's the question?
10:15Is his toe fully healthy?
10:17No, it's not fully healthy.
10:19It's not fully healthy.
10:20So there's a chance, you know, when he gets out to play.
10:23So you just, I mean, there's a risk with it, I guess.
10:26Obviously, there's a risk always.
10:28But there's a risk that he could aggravate it again.
10:31Yes.
10:31I think you just answered your own question.
10:33Obviously, there's a risk with everything.
10:34Yes.
10:35Can you hurt it again?
10:36Yes.
10:37Okay.
10:39Yes.
10:39I mean, he did answer his own question.
10:42Well, it's tough because the reporter wants to try to ask this the right way.
10:46And in that process, when you're searching, and I've done this, we've all done this in
10:50an interview, in that process, you end up asking five questions.
10:54And the subject will just answer the last one.
10:58And if you're weaving your way through that conversation, there's a real good chance you
11:02might answer your own question.
11:04You did.
11:04And then they just duck out.
11:07So, like, yeah.
11:07They just answer your own question.
11:08The process with Kyle might be to just be like, okay, damn it, I'm going to limit myself
11:12to one sentence.
11:13Right.
11:14What does he have to do to be able to play on Sunday?
11:18Like, what does he have to do during the week to be ready to go?
11:22I think a great question today might have been, why is he questionable this week?
11:29And he wasn't last week.
11:33Because he's making progress.
11:35Well, then let's hear Kyle.
11:37I don't know what he would have said.
11:39Maybe.
11:40Probably.
11:40But, again, that's what I would let's hear how he responds.
11:46And let's hear the tone.
11:47Mayoko was right on point with that being the first subject matter.
11:51Because if you're all looking for progress, there it is.
11:54He was out two weeks ago.
11:56He was out last week.
11:58He's questionable this week.
12:01That's different.
12:02And so that's the subject matter.
12:05But what if we asked why?
12:07What happened that allowed that upgrade as far as the designation?
12:14See what he says?
12:15Yeah.
12:15What happened in practice this week that made you change that?
12:18I think it's just because he looked better.
12:20And Matt Mayoko reported that yesterday, I think, where he looked better than he has in a long time at practice.
12:26So he's looking better, and he's not going to start because he didn't get all the first-team reps.
12:31So we're going to list him as questionable.
12:33We're going to fly him to New York, and maybe he'll be the backup.
12:36Maybe he won't be.
12:37Stay tuned.
12:38Maybe they haven't really made that decision yet.
12:40But I bet they have.
12:41Yeah.
12:41That's the other thing.
12:42But they don't need to tell you or the league until tomorrow.
12:44Correct.
12:44They do not.
12:45Actually, they don't until 90 minutes before kickoff.
12:47Well, they need to make roster moves tomorrow if they're going to have Adrian be the three or whatever they need to do with that.
12:54They need to make that designation tomorrow by noon, I believe.
12:57Here is Shanahan talking about the starter reps for Purdy this week.
13:02He didn't get all the starter reps this week.
13:04As soon as he had a chance to get through practice and stuff the first time, we let him get all those starter reps, and it was great.
13:09And then there was a chance he could re-hurt in the game, and he did, and he's been out for the last month.
13:14He's got more reps this week, but we weren't going to commit to all of that like we did last time.
13:17So I think it's easing him back more than the last time.
13:20Okay.
13:21So, yeah, that's kind of an expansive answer.
13:23And then on how Purdy is dealing with the injury.
13:27Brock's a pretty composed guy, so he's not going to get real emotional either way.
13:30In either situation, he's never going to get too up or too down.
13:33But speaking for him, I know he's frustrated.
13:35Anytime you've got stuff that you haven't had before that lingers, I mean, Brock is more fresher than anyone that he can't be out there.
13:42So, you know, he's talked to a lot of people who have this, so I think a lot of people have warned him that this is the case.
13:47You know, so he understands it, so it's not just totally shocking him.
13:50But I think any time you have something that doesn't go away, it's frustrating.
13:54I remember I'd sprained my ankle my whole life, and I remember I got my first high ankle sprain my fifth year of college,
14:00and I thought I would practice the next day because it felt better than the ten regular ankle sprains I've had in my life.
14:07I kind of walked for like a month and missed a whole month of football, and it's just, you don't really get it.
14:11It just lingers and it doesn't go away.
14:13And I haven't had a toe injury, so I can't totally relate to it in that way.
14:16But people who have, it sounds very similar, if not a lot worse, when you're dealing with a turf toe compared to something like that.
14:21So it's something he's dealing with, but I know we're getting closer.
14:24Okay, so that was almost a full one-minute answer.
14:26Yeah.
14:26So it wasn't ticked the entire time.
14:29No, and ultimately, you know, you lay out what you can as far as the details of it, but he doesn't know the level of pain.
14:35All he knows is the level of work that Brock's been able to put in.
14:39Quick update.
14:40Yeah.
14:41Steve Kerr in 12 minutes.
14:42All right.
14:43Not at 3.30, 3 o'clock.
14:45Steve Kerr.
14:46So get yourself, by the way, I know they're on the road.
14:49Phone or video?
14:50Just phone.
14:51Okay.
14:52All right.
14:52So still go to YouTube, though, because you get to look at our pretty faces.
14:55Nice.
14:55But Steve Kerr in 10 minutes right here on Willard and Dems.
15:01Let's go to Jack in Oakland.
15:02Hi, Jack.
15:02Thanks for the call.
15:03What's up?
15:04Hey, guys.
15:05Thanks for taking my call.
15:06I know I'm not Steve Kerr, but I like to weigh in on the Niner thing.
15:11So, look, I like what you said about the question of why are we not talking about the quarterback situation with Purdy and Mack anymore
15:20when it was all anyone would talk about like two weeks ago.
15:23Yeah.
15:23And the reason is that Fred Warner is out.
15:29With all of the injuries that we had, if you have Fred Warner on the team, you have a chance at winning the Super Bowl.
15:37I think that's how I feel.
15:38I think that's how Kyle Shanahan feels and John Lynch feels.
15:42And that's the baseline.
15:45Once Fred Warner was out, or sorry, when Fred Warner was in, then the question is, well, how are we going to score on the other side of the ball?
15:53Who's going to be our quarterback?
15:54Is it going to be Mack?
15:55Is it going to be Purdy?
15:56But when he's out, it's like, eh, we are not going to win this whole thing.
16:02So, it's a little disheartening.
16:04And then on top of that, they've kind of proven to be interchangeable, the two quarterbacks, throughout the year.
16:09So, I think it really comes down to that.
16:12And I think the Niners know that.
16:14I think the media knows that because they have a pulse on this stuff a little bit more with the questions that they're asking.
16:19And I think the fans feel it, even if they can't quite pinpoint it.
16:24It sucks.
16:25I'm wearing my Niners shirt right now.
16:26I'm a huge fan.
16:27But it's like, it's been a blow.
16:29And even with Bosa going out, like, I think Bosa is amazing, of course, right?
16:34But Fred Warner is the heartbeat of the team, whether people know it or not.
16:39And I think that's what it is.
16:40I don't know.
16:40What do you guys think?
16:41Jack, I think you're spot on.
16:42Appreciate the call.
16:44And I love that someone said this because our text exchange on Wednesday, two days ago, was kind of about this.
16:52And, Lucas, I think you admitted that this is kind of how you're feeling, where it's just like, have we lost our juice for this quarterback discussion?
17:02Because even at 5-3, are a lot of you like, it's not happening.
17:07This ain't going anywhere.
17:08Where is this going?
17:10And maybe that's because they looked so bad last week, right?
17:13Because the week before, it was kind of like, where is this going?
17:15And then they won on Sunday Night Football.
17:17And they're like, hey, maybe it's going somewhere.
17:19But now it's like, where is this actually going?
17:23And that bums me out a little bit because I think that's a Super Bowl or bust mentality.
17:29And that's fine if that's how you do it.
17:32I don't like doing it that way because I think there's still good things and fun things that can happen in a season.
17:37I get that it's a little deflating.
17:39But, you know, I try to go week to week and stay in the moment a little bit on it.
17:43But I get it.
17:44I get it.
17:44There is a very deflated feel even to their winning record so far.
17:48Yeah, I don't feel that.
17:49And it's just...
17:50You don't.
17:50No, it's a roller coaster.
17:52I don't feel deflated.
17:54Yes, you feel bummed that you don't have Bosa and Warner.
17:56And boy, we'd be better if we had them.
17:58Sure.
17:58It's football.
17:59So now I turn my attention to who do you have.
18:02And you've already won a game without Nick Bosa.
18:05A couple of them.
18:06You won without Fred Warner.
18:07I know he got hurt early in that game.
18:09But you still...
18:10Actually, it was...
18:11No, the next game.
18:12You didn't have Fred Warner.
18:13And you won.
18:13You beat Atlanta on Sunday night.
18:15So I think that you start feeling bad about this team and yourself.
18:19And then they go out and they win like they did against the Rams.
18:22And then, okay, we're cooking with gas.
18:24We're going to Tampa.
18:25And, you know, this could be a battle for home field in the playoffs.
18:28And you lose.
18:29Okay.
18:29We're not that good.
18:31You come home.
18:32You lose Fred Warner.
18:33Woe is us.
18:34You beat Atlanta.
18:35All right.
18:35We're back, baby.
18:37Bang, bang.
18:37Niner gang.
18:38Oh, and then you go to Houston.
18:39You lose.
18:40Oh, boy.
18:41We're back in the doldrums.
18:42And so it's so week to week.
18:44I know it's a week to week league.
18:45But I think about teams around the NFL that have a right to and probably do feel down in
18:52the dumps.
18:52Like Arizona, you stink again.
18:55Carolina, you haven't been good in a decade.
18:58Miami, you just fired your GM.
19:00New Orleans, good Lord, you have no quarterback.
19:03You've got two or three guys who pretend.
19:04And they should have Taysom Hill just play quarterback.
19:07But my point is this.
19:08Tennessee, you're a joke.
19:10Minnesota, you are praying that this quarterback you drafted is any good.
19:14There are a number of teams around the league that can really be down in the dumps.
19:18You're five and three.
19:19Pull yourselves up by the bootstraps, Niner fan.
19:21Go to New York.
19:23You're favored.
19:23Win a damn game.
19:24No, I like the take, but I think when I asked it to you, you're saying you don't feel deflated.
19:31Not at five and three.
19:32I'm asking you if you feel like, do you feel the deflation among others?
19:38That's what I'm saying.
19:39Somewhat.
19:39I feel that.
19:41I feel that significantly right now.
19:43A lot of those people are the same ones who look at last night's Warrior game and say,
19:47see, we can't even beat the Bucs without Giannis.
19:50What are we even talking about?
19:51I don't live, I like to live moment to moment in sports.
19:55And last night it was like, oh boy, I thought they were going to win this game.
19:58Yeah, I did too.
19:58Right.
19:59Stinker.
19:59Ice cream or cookies?
20:00What should we have for dessert?
20:02What do you think?
20:03Nothing.
20:03Okay.
20:04Fruit.
20:04Whatever.
20:05The wife was around.
20:05Fruit.
20:06Well, tonight's going to be a major sugar day.
20:08You sound like Lance Armstrong.
20:09I was reading an article one time and he's talking about their meal process as a family.
20:14And he's like, we do not believe in depriving ourselves of things.
20:21So we do have dessert and we cut up fruit every night.
20:24Nice.
20:24Every night.
20:25I'm like, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
20:26That doesn't count.
20:27No, no, no.
20:27That's not fruit.
20:28So I live in the moment.
20:30I react to the games in the moment.
20:31But when you take a step back and you look at a Niner team, forget the injuries.
20:36What is it?
20:362,306 games lost and Shanahan took over.
20:39The number is something like that.
20:41But you're 5-3.
20:42So if you go to the Giants tomorrow, Sunday rather, and you lose, okay, the Ram game is
20:47big.
20:48You lose to the Rams.
20:49Now you're 5-5.
20:50Okay.
20:50Now we're starting to talk about must-win territory.
20:52But for now, you've had injuries.
20:55Your quarterback is questionable, questionable concern.
20:58And you're 5-3.
20:59And you're favored.
21:00And they don't have Scadaboo.
21:01Go beat the Giants.
21:02Or their entire defensive backfield.
21:04They all got announced out today.
21:06Right.
21:06And they can't stop the run.
21:07They have a really good pass rush and nothing else.
21:10And that's still a thing.
21:12Because a really good pass rush can trickle it down and turn it into a very good defensive
21:16performance.
21:17But there are some matchups that skew the Niners' way this weekend.
21:21There's no doubt about it.
21:22And they'll have two new pass rushers.
21:24I don't know if anybody cares.
21:26I don't know if anybody, like, I shouldn't say it that way.
21:28I don't know if anybody has confidence that this will change the pass rush.
21:32But, you know, Keyon White and Cleland Farrell, they're going to be out there.
21:36And they weren't last week against Houston.
21:38Steve Kerr didn't confirm that Farrell will be playing.
21:40He said they have to make a decision tomorrow.
21:42And they have not made it yet.
21:43Okay.
21:43Well, Steve Kerr coaches the Warriors.
21:45So I hope you wouldn't.
21:46My mind's on Steve Kerr coming up in five minutes.
21:48Steve Kerr, first question.
21:49Why are you talking about Cleland Farrell?
21:52Why don't you keep his name out your mouth and figure out why Pods is throwing the ball
21:57into the stands after a steal?
22:00That's my first question for Steve.
