00:00I don't want to put anybody to sleep.
00:03I could come out with some sort of an FS1,
00:06like let's battle about Brock Purdy for the 78th day in a row.
00:10Come on.
00:11Hey, Niners.
00:13Dude, the last name of the head coach is Shanahan.
00:16And the last name of the running back is McCaffrey.
00:21Run the ball.
00:23What the hell is going on, and why have we not talked about this?
00:28Greg Cosell's on our show yesterday saying they're one of the worst run teams in the league.
00:32They're the only team that hasn't rushed the ball into the end zone so far this year.
00:36Everybody yelled about red zone issues all last year,
00:39and we all came back with the same answer.
00:42Oh, there's no McCaffrey.
00:44So that's what happened there.
00:46Well, now there's McCaffrey.
00:48So can I ask the most important and most probing question facing the 49er offense right now?
00:56What the hell is going on with the run game?
01:01I don't understand it.
01:03And they're 3-1, but I'll project for you right now.
01:07And it's two things.
01:08I said it about the defense yesterday.
01:10I'll say it about the offense today.
01:12Defense, if you don't make a trade and learn how to rush the pass without Nick Bosa,
01:16you're going to lose a lot of football games this year.
01:18And offense, I don't care who your quarterback is.
01:22It could be Adrian Martinez or Adrian Gonzalez, which I keep messing up all week long.
01:28It could be anybody.
01:30If you can't run the football, this is not going to go well.
01:34So that's where I'm at.
01:36That's what I'm focused on tonight.
01:39Figure it out.
01:39That's what a backup quarterback usually needs anyway, a running game.
01:43So that's where my focus is tonight.
01:46And if you look at the Rams' defense, they are really good against the pass.
01:50And they're maybe just average against the run.
01:54So the Rams' defense is very good.
01:57I'm not going to try to minimize it.
01:58I know that their linebackers are their weak spot.
02:00So how do you get to the spot where you can actually run the football?
02:05The problem with the Niner run game, and I'm not going to go full Greg Cosell on you
02:09because I will never be as smart as he is.
02:11But I've watched all four games multiple times, and the problem with the Niners' run game is,
02:17thank you, they don't get their blockers to the second level.
02:21So you block the guys who are in front of you, and if you're a good run team,
02:25you block those guys, and then you're able to get a couple of guys to the linebacker level.
02:30The running back hits the hole.
02:32You have a block to the second level, quote-unquote,
02:34and then you can make actual big-time headway.
02:37And I'm thinking about the Travis Etienne run where he goes 48 yards to the house.
02:43It was a house call, and if you watch that play, Mikel Williams gets pushed out.
02:48The safeties come up.
02:49They get blocked to the sideline, and Etienne has about a 2-yard or 3-yard gap, and he is gone.
02:56And McCaffrey this year, he's only had a couple of runs that are explosive 10 or more yards
03:03because they're not getting to that second level.
03:05So is it the guards?
03:07And that's kind of what John Feliciano's told us.
03:10It's partially personnel, right?
03:11There's no Kittle.
03:12It's all of it, no Kittle.
03:12And Juwan is really good, too.
03:14And he's been in there some, but not always, and not tonight.
03:17So, like, I get all that.
03:20But if you're going to, I don't know, if you're going to be a football team,
03:23you're going to need other people to do the things.
03:26Like, that's just the way it works.
03:28They call it a next-man-up mentality.
03:30Right.
03:30Yes, you can't replace Kittle, but I don't know, Jake and Luke Farrell.
03:35Luke Farrell, this is what you do.
03:37This is what you do, dude.
03:37You block.
03:38So, like, I don't know.
03:39Can you be 75% of Kittle?
03:42Can we be a little bit more sticky with this is what I would say.
03:47Like, be a little bit more stubborn with it.
03:50Can you run the ball maybe in some – you know what their best run was last week
03:55is when they ran the ball when no one thought they were going to run the ball.
03:58So, how about that a little bit?
03:59It was third and seven, and they ran the ball.
04:01I'm like, what are they doing?
04:02Yeah, they got 11.
04:03They got 11 yards.
04:04So, I don't know, man.
04:06Mac's going to need some help.
04:07They all do.
04:08This is a really hard assignment.
04:10I know you can't just snap your fingers and make it happen because you want to,
04:14but the 49ers need to run the damn ball.
04:16And watch how much everything gets better if they do.
04:21But you, so far this year, you have 106 carries for 352 yards,
04:26and you mentioned no touchdowns, and you're the only team without a touchdown on the ground.
04:30You're averaging 3.3 carry, and I know that the averages go up when you get an explosive,
04:36but you don't have that.
04:38And, you know, we heard from John Feliciano, former offensive lineman,
04:41maybe future offensive lineman, depending on how things go,
04:44but it's the guards right now that are struggling.
04:47Dominic Pune having a sophomore slump.
04:50Connor Colby, who's a rookie, who's been thrown in.
04:53And he's been inconsistent, and I'm sorry, but Trent Williams is not looking like the Trent of old.
04:59He's not able to make a block and then get out there and ruin people.
05:03And you don't have Kittle.
05:04You don't have Juwan.
05:05And say what you want about Christian McCaffrey.
05:07I don't think that he has slowed down.
05:10I like your Debo comparison in the crossover because all of a sudden Debo found his step, right?
05:15Poof!
05:16Exactly.
05:16Wow, where was that?
05:18Like magic.
05:18So I do think that it's a comprehensive thing, and, you know, you've got Mac Jones tonight,
05:24and I'm being told by people who are going to be on the ground that Mac Jones will be wearing the knee brace.
05:29So Mac Jones is not 100% either.
05:32So you've got a quarterback who the Rams maybe don't necessarily need to respect,
05:37a group of wide receivers that you don't necessarily fear,
05:41and now we're expecting Christian McCaffrey to go out there and gash them on the ground?
05:45It's going to be real hard.
05:46It's a tough assignment tonight.
05:47It's going to be real hard.
05:47Yeah, absolutely.
05:49But then again, that is kind of, that's what running the ball is.
05:52It's when they know that it's coming and they can't stop it anyway.
05:55Like, watch the Philadelphia Eagles play.
05:58They get out there for that tush push, and they might as well have a sign on Jalen Hurts' face
06:03that says, we're about to do the tush push.
06:07Right.
06:07And then they don't stop it because they know how to execute whatever they're doing,
06:11and they do it very, very well.
06:13And so, look, yeah, some guys are going to need to grow up quick,
06:17and some guys are going to need to have a damn night.
06:20Like, sometimes you just have a damn night.
06:23The 49ers are probably going to lose the football game.
06:26But it's not for sure.
06:29It's not out of the realm of possibility.
06:32There are seven, eight, nine-point underdogs in football all the time.
06:36How much were the Packers favored by in Cleveland a couple of weeks ago?
06:40What was the spread of that football game?
06:4214!
06:43Browns won.
06:45Browns won the game.
06:46So, like, yeah, let's go play this thing,
06:49and let's see if they can get back to basics and use their fundamentals and have a night.
06:55And I know the Rams' defensive line is good,
06:58but I don't know about these particular matchups.
07:01These are, you know, these human beings against those human beings,
07:04and let's see who can push who.
07:06And sometimes it goes a way that you don't think it's going to go.
07:11So, I don't know who the people are and exactly what the scenarios are.
07:17None of us can know that.
07:18I just know that the San Francisco 49ers,
07:21coached by Kyle Shanahan with Christian McCaffrey on the team,
07:24you've got to run the ball.
07:26You have to run the ball.
07:28And for four weeks, we're sitting here breaking down all these things,
07:32and nobody's talking about that.
07:34Brock this, Nick that, George, Health, Kyle, play, call, this, that, the other turnovers.
07:41Run the ball, and everything else will trickle down from there.
07:46Yeah, easier said than done.
07:48Of course.
07:48I don't know if they can, but that's what I would love to see them do.
07:52Yeah, of course, and they just haven't.
07:55Even in the opener, when they got to 100 yards for the only time this year,
08:00McCaffrey was 22 carries for 69 yards.
08:03And that's a little bit more than three per carry.
08:06Not great.
08:06And Robinson Jr. had 33, Purdy got 17, and you got over 100 for the only time this year.
08:13And just a public service announcement to anybody who's going to call,
08:16and I want to hear from all of you, 888-957-9570.
08:20Please don't utter the name Isaac Garendo.
08:23He's played zero snaps this year on offense.
08:26Zero.
08:26Yep.
08:27So, they're not going to go to Garendo unless somebody else gets hurt,
08:30or it's a real catastrophe, or it's garbage time.
08:33Why would they?
08:34Because he's got that 4-3 speed.
08:38And, I mean...
08:38What the hell does Christian have?
08:40It's kind of like the people who want Adrian Martinez to play.
08:44It's the same sort of syndrome.
08:46They're not going to play Garendo.
08:48They haven't played Garendo.
08:50Maybe they'll play Brian Robinson Jr. more, and I hope they play him more.
08:54Maybe you go two running backs, and you put McCaffrey out as wide receiver.
08:58Shanahan's going to have to come up with creative ways tonight
09:01to do things other than what he's done.
09:04I like that idea.
09:05You know what the Niners should do?
09:07They should play their worst players.
09:09It's a bold strategy, Cotton.
09:11Let's see if it works out for them.
09:13Yeah, how about no?
09:14How about no?
09:15How about Doug in Kansas?
09:18Hi, Doug.
09:18Thank you for calling the show.
09:20What are you doing?
09:22Oh, I'm driving home from work.
09:23Just got off.
09:25Been listening off and on to this station all day long via YouTube on my phone.
09:30Right on.
09:30Like I do almost every day.
09:32Like I do almost every day because I got to get all the Niners information
09:36I can get out here in the Midwest.
09:39And so I called because I've been thinking about this, I don't know,
09:44for a few days and just how it reminds me.
09:46I thought I was all grown up and had fully adopted the next man up mentality.
09:51But it turns out, I feel just like I did when Montana would get hurt
09:56and they'd have to put Steve Young in for a while.
09:58Like I want the win.
09:59That's number one and that's paramount.
10:01But I didn't want Steve Young to get the credit because I'm a Montana guy.
10:05You see what I'm saying?
10:07Absolutely.
10:08It's a feeling.
10:08I want the win, especially against the Rams.
10:11But at the end of the day, we got to put our big boy pants on and say,
10:14get the win.
10:15And I'm so glad somebody said something about earlier in the day,
10:18I heard him talking about let's use McCaffrey in the Debo mode that we used
10:22to do Debo.
10:23Because he could absolutely fill that world beautifully.
10:26The speed, the ability to break a tackle in an open field.
10:30I mean, get out of here.
10:31And by the way, we got that Robinson guy.
10:33You just mentioned him, I think.
10:35And let's mix him in, man.
10:37Let's just pound that defense.
10:38Let's make the Rams regret hitting us tonight.
10:41Let's make them feel like, oh, yeah, we are playing in our home field
10:44on the south side.
10:45You know what I'm saying?
10:46Well, they kind of are.
10:47Yeah.
10:48Hey, Doug, have a great time and enjoy the game.
10:51I sort of feel like they have been using Christian McCaffrey in the Debo role.
10:56I know they're not doing jet sweeps.
10:57Sure.
10:58But, my gosh, how many catches does he have in four games?
11:02Well, he leads football in touches with 100.
11:04Right.
11:05But how many of them are catches?
11:07Where's he at so far?
11:08He's got, this year, he's got 31 catches and 69 carries.
11:1431?
11:15He's second in football in targets behind Puka Nakua.
11:18That's almost eight catches a game.
11:20Right.
11:21He's easily as much of a receiver as he is a running back right now.
11:24And he might go 1,000, 1,000, and the big question is, can he get to 1,000 rushing yards?
11:30Because right now he's on pace for about 1,300 receiving yards, and I don't even know if
11:36he can get to 1,000 rushing yards.
